  • "Unfortunately previous occupiers had spilled something on the lounge carpet and not cleaned it afterwards, thus resulting in a stain which is just inside the door, not giving a good first impression."

The kitchen floor had not been cleaned for a while either. The two previous small faults have not been addressed and are still present. The front gate has screws missing and is falling off and the latch is missing, but still shuts ok. Not sure how long since anyone was there but there was a strong damp smell in the lounge that dispersed after a few days with the window open. On saying this, we had a fabulous time in Fowey as the cottage is in a perfect location with easy access to the whole village. Highly recommend Appletons and Sam's for amazing food and service.

Thanks for your feedback - we are addressing cleaning issues that have been raised and the front gate. We are so pleased you enjoyed Fowey and staying at Rose Cottage and thanks for the recommendations! Property Owner

  • "Very tired, very damp and needs massive improvement and terrible customer service."

What greeted us after a long 6 hour journey was so disappointing. Starting with the garden, it hadn’t been tended to for weeks, the patio was black and needed jet washing, overgrown bushes all round and leaves all over the ground. The garden bench was broken and unusable and the rush doormat threadbare and the front of the house was covered in bird muck. The key safe was old and doesn’t open every time, on one occasion it took 15 minutes to open - highlighted on a previous review which still hasn’t been fixed. The biggest issue greeting us was the rubbish. Bin day in Fowey is Thursday which is good timing given changeover is Friday, but only if the previous guests can be bothered to put it out which ours didn’t. So we were greeted with 5 huge bags of rubbish and recycling on our doorstep which was rotting throughout our stay - management company declined to remove it. Once inside we were welcomed by the overwhelming smell of damp. The small hallway had damp up the walls and paint peeling away and the living room had damp covered over three out of four walls, the chimney breast was literally dripping in water (we have videos). There was also no internal doormat and given we were bringing rain and dirt in from the outside into the hallway, the hallway got really wet and dirty immediately. Back to the living room where we immediately found huge stains on the carpet - about 12” x 12” in size and the sofas looked as though they’d been taken from a crack den having lost all their shape and covered in marks, stains and felt tip pen, the cushions were equally as filthy. The kitchen was disgusting with balls of dog hair on the floor, cob webs and dust covering everywhere. The fridge freezer is housed in a cubby hole and the stench from there is almost toxic from the damp. The microwave is about 20 years old and had rust on the inside and the kettle lid was broken and won’t come off, the handle is left to balance on the top to leave three sharp screws protruding. The cupboard under the stairs is rammed with ‘stuff’, ironically there are also four pots of mould resistant paint and stain cover up, make of that what you will. The welcome pack was hilarious, just some sachets of tea and coffee but the icing on the cake was a cleaning pack, the irony of this was not lost on us. The bedrooms are a bit better albeit in the twin room each of the beds have a mattresses that are 12” shorter than the bed frame so anyone who is remotely tall will have their feet dangling over the edge. The bed linen and towels were new and clean and of good quality but the throws on the end of each bed needed washing. The bathroom needs a complete makeover, the laminate flooring has suffered water damage and has warped and the laminate is coming off the wooden boards. The same applies to the wooden bath panel which also has water damage and blown the top of it apart. The radiator is covered in rust and so too is the towel holder. The plug to the sink is broken and there is no extractor fan in the bathroom (also broken) and so there is instruction to leave the window open instead. There are no tooth brush holders or glasses and no toilet roll holder either. Further issues are that builders are working next door at the attached cottage and woke us us banging every morning, albeit this isn’t the owners fault, but a note of caution at least. So, as soon as we got there we called the management company who could do nothing that day due to the time of the night (6pm), so we decided to clean the house ourselves and we went out and bought throws for the sofas and an internal doormat and air fresheners. The management company said they were already aware of the carpets and sofas so clearly this had been reported before but nothing done and they also stated a doormat couldn’t be used as it wouldn't allow the door to be opened, funny that, we went out and bought one that worked just fine. The next day the management company stated they could get a cleaner over and provide a doormat, we informed them there was no point due to us cleaning it ourselves and buying one. They said they couldn’t get the carpets or sofas cleaned due to no breaks in the holiday bookings but we were happy for them to come whilst we were there but this wasn’t facilitated. They also said they couldn’t do anything about the damp but advised to put the heating on, this didn’t work and we were left with the damp all week which got worse and worse each day despite there being no rain fall during our stay, it was shocking. Our experience was compounded by the customer service we encountered, in a nutshell nobody cared. The owners will no doubt respond below and say they offered to resolve all the issues and that we refused (this was the drum they were banging) they didn't at all, in fact they didn't contact us once during our stay or anytime after, not even a text or any form of apology, this is now 5 weeks on. The management company were also hopeless, again there was no contact from our second day onwards. The only thing the owners told Sykes during our stay was to ask us to leave early and they would reimburse us, that was on the afternoon of our last day! After the holiday Sykes phoned the owners, left voicemails and sent emails but they didn’t respond to any until two weeks later when they refused to offer any form of apology or reimbursement. Sykes were terrible for help and support, I spoke to them every day of our stay and for two weeks after. In total I spoke to 10 different advisors and each one, bar India, fobbed me off. I asked to speak to a manager on numerous occasions and not one phoned. During three weeks of complaints Sykes didn’t call me once, I had to phone them 18 times over 3 weeks to get any sort of answer from them. Be warned, they are only booking agents and cannot or will not provide any form of protection to the customer, it’s between you and the owners. It’s such a pity, Fowey is a gorgeous Cornish town, if only Rose Cottage was the same.

We are sorry you found issues with Rose Cottage during your stay. We rely on feedback from guests and our caretakers to rectify problems - our management company were in touch during your stay and offered to conduct extra cleaning and provide extra items to accommodate. The bench has since been removed and the gardeners have visited and the kettle was replaced for the following guests once they reported it. We have supplied replacement sofa covers and are addressing other maintenance/cleaning issues. As Rose Cottage is a mid 19th century Cornish cottage it can suffer from damp. I believe storm Betty landed on your first day, bringing extreme wet weather which will have been a factor. As owners we are in ongoing contact with both Sykes and the caretakers and responded to Sykes at the beginning of your stay when issues were first raised offering refunds and discounts for future stays, I'm not sure why there was a delay in communication. Despite the challenges we hope you enjoyed your stay in Fowey. The guests who stayed afterwards gave the property a 5 star review remarking that it was "spotless" and a "really comfy and beautifully furnished home" that they would definitely return to. • "Loved our week in Fowey."

The location of Rose Cottage is perfect and it was a lovely place to come back to. We can imagine it would be very cosy in winter. Minor cavils would be that the second toilet flushes very poorly, one bedside lamp tends to flicker and we took a while to work out the oven and the shower. Thanks for the cream teas, great. We're already planning to return!

Great that you enjoyed your stay and the cream tea! We look forward to your return visit. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage - we had a brilliant time in Fowey."

Thought the cottage was beautifully appointed. Front garden lovely and private. Great location. Some points that matter to me: Might be a good idea to have summer weight duvets. Please provide enough dishwasher tablets for the stay or make it clear in the listing to bring your own. Same applies for toilet rolls and kitchen rolls.

We are so pleased you had a great time staying at Rose Cottage and appreciated the front garden and location - we too think this is a huge plus ! Our caretakers leave a cleaning starter pack for our guests to make sure you have what you need when you arrive. Property Owner

  • "The boiler instructions need clarifying they are not at all clear."

Whilst the double bed is very comfortable, the single beds are anything but. Perhaps alright for children but certainly not for adults. Mattress toppers could be a solution, however, this area needs urgent attention.

  • "Lovely cottage, well situated, clean and comfortable."

Great little patio which was lovely when the sun eventually came out. Only criticism is the lack of any facilities to recycle- no bags provided for kerbside recycling (many other nearby cottages provided these), meaning we had to drive to St Austell and queue up for 20 minutes to recycle - not encouraging green practices. As another reviewer stated, a mat inside the front door would be a helpful addition.

  • "Lovely and well kept cottage very comfortable The double bed was fantastic The mattresses in the twin room were less comfortable however The kitchen was very cozy the only thing to say is that the cooker looked a little tired and the baking trays too, maybe update the trays!"

Also dishwasher looked very old it worked well though we just took pot luck on the settings The ring binder was a little messy maybe worth updating too Shame there was no welcome goody basket ! And no black bin bags aside from the one on the bin Also no inside front door mat maybe worth adding. Overall a lovely stay thanks!

  • "You will be aware we had the cause to call to report problems with our cottage."

mainly the boiler that was broken, the toilet seat that was loose, the handle in the bedroom that came off clean in your hand and the damp. The plumber was excellent, and showed us how to re-pressurise the boiler (which we had to do twice a day). not once during our week stay wake up to hot water or heating, instead we had to get up to re-pressurise the boiler. these things happen, a full boiler replacement is likely required, however it is evident we are not the first people to experience this problem and therefore I am disappointed that it has been left when it could have been addressed without guests in the property. The idea of walls being knocked out during our stay was not an attractive one. I’m thankful the loo seat was replaced though. Sykes should be inspecting such properties. Its in a state of disrepair with paint coming off the walls and black mould from the damp. Whilst we had. great time in Fowey, and made good of the cottage, we are grateful to be home where we are slowly getting the mould smell out of our clothes. Sykes responded well to these problems when called

  • "The cottage was nice, however when we turned up the cottage had not been cleaned."

The bed linen was dirty as were the towels and the bin had not been emptied so the cottage had a funny smell. I did call and ask for this to be rectified, and it was thankfully.

We are so sorry that Rose Cottage was not cleaned when you arrived, we always strive to make sure our guests have an enjoyable stay from start to finish and can only apologise for this oversight which was due to an unfortunate miscommunication on bookings. Thankfully our caretaker was quick to rectify the problem and ensure the Cottage was comfortable and clean for your stay. We are glad you liked our cottage and hope to welcome you back in the future and will endeavour to make sure this doesn't happen again. Property Owner

  • "The location was amazing."

The cottage was clean, comfortable and very cosy. The only criticisms we have are: 1. The WiFi connection was really bad, would recommend getting a better router or more high speed connection. “WiFi available” is not an accurate description. 2. There is NO PARKING, and the closest car park is up a big hill or on the other side of town. This should be more obvious before booking. 3. Although the rules are ‘No pets on furniture’, we found some fine dog hair on the sofa blankets, and my mother is allergic to fine dog hair, which was a bit of a problem. 4. The cottage needs to be aired when not in use as it smelt very musty when we arrived. The above is just for feedback - We had a very lovely holiday overall. Thank you!

  • "Lovely cottage in a convenient position for Fowey."

Stairs to garden and steep stairs internally means you need to be fit and mobile (also steep walk to car park). Single beds better for kids than adults. It is a lovely cottage and we are seriously thinking of booking again. Thank you

With an elevated position and views over the town from the bedroom windows, this humble dwelling is bursting with character and modern finishing touches to make you feel right at home.

Use the bright and sunny sitting room to spend your down time, get a board game out of the 'rainy day cupboard' and crowd around the coffee table, while the open fire takes the chill off a winter's evening after a bracing walk along the coast.

You have a lovely dining area in the kitchen, ideal for a delicious, home-cooked feasts prepared by the chef of the group.

Climb the stairs to the bedrooms after an adventure on the South West Coast Path and retire to either the king-size double or a twin, both served by the well-appointed bathroom.

The enclosed garden to the front of the property is a real sun trap, with outdoor furniture for relaxed alfresco dining on a long summer's evening, washed down with a refreshing bottle of wine.

If you can tear yourself away from this hidden gem in the heart of the Fowey, stroll down the hill to the beach at Ready Money Cove and take in the beautiful views out across the sea, or wander along the magical harbourside, where you can see people crabbing, then take a ferry across to Polruan on the other side of the river.

Other attractions in the area include The Lost Gardens of Heligan, The Eden Project and the charming town of Mevagissey, with its narrow streets and a cluster of shops, pubs and galleries cradling the waterfront.
