  • "We loved the cottage and it was perfect for our stay over Christmas, warm cosy, very well equipped and so dog friendly."

Our aim was a Christmas which was a break with tradition and we didn't want to do the full Christmas lunch but I imagine large cooking would be hard with the small kitchen and maybe that should be mentioned in the description of the cottage but for us as I've said it was perfection. I would recommend the property to anyone. We made use of the pubs, village shop and the lovely coffee shop, all of which were so close to the property. Despite it being Christmas we and swam a couple of times and walked a great deal. A wonderful relaxing holiday.

Felt very homely. Comfortable seats and sofa with fabulous prospect of the estuary through a huge picture window with its cosy window seat. Kitchen well equipped and easy to use - we were self-catering and it was no problem. Super shower. Master bedroom a delightful room with comfy bed and calming atmosphere. V Close to village facilities and quay - we spent happy hours watching the boats! Easy access to stunning SW Coast path. Thank you for a healing week. We have already booked again for the autumn.

  • "I’m afraid I was very unhappy."

So much so that we only stayed two of the four nights, finding somewhere else to stay. The double bed was very uncomfortable (wooden slatted beds are not appropriate for holiday lets). The kitchen felt grubby, there was a horrid fish smell from the fridge so it couldn’t be used, the ovens were grubby. The bedding smelt “musty” and not freshly laundered. The whole house felt damp and my grandchildren refused to go to bed in the ground floor bedroom as it felt so cold and damp. I’m very unhappy that we paid around £1,000 for this 4 night stay; it was wholly unacceptable. The only positive was the lovely view from the top floor sitting room.

Hi there, The was no fishy smell from the fridge when it was cleaned so I’m sorry about that and have no idea why that was the case but we’ve asked the cleaner to make sure it doesn’t happen again, same with the oven. The bed has never been described as uncomfortable before, I’ve had many good nights sleep in it and 90% of beds are wooden slatted, without issue. All bedding is freshly laundered every week. The ground floor bedroom can get cool due to the 2 ft thick walls but airing should help with that. We are squiring a dehumidifier for that room specifically due to the nature of the building, it can trap the cool air but again, having stayed in that room in all seasons, I’ve never had an issue with it feeling damp as such. There is also a storage heater in there which you can turn in if it’s cold which warms the room up very well. Property Owner

  • "Sadly our stay here was marred by the general lack of cleanliness throughout the house, and also by the level of noise from outside on most evenings until the early to mid hours of the morning (3."

10am was the pinnacle!). After complaining to the manager at The Lugger pub we had the odd night of reprieve from their own staff talking/ swearing/ smoking/ drinking outside the bedroom windows. The Russell Inn was earlier to close. The bedroom windows are not sufficient to keep any noise at bay, even talking outside. The house itself is in a good position for the ferry to Fowey and has stunning views from the top floor. There is however black mould in the shower and the house felt damp upon arrival and on colder days. The bathroom window does not close and we had to wash the towels a week into the holiday as they smelt of damp. The frosted window in the bathroom that looks directly onto the staircase needs covering- it is not private in the bathroom at all. The wooden towel rail in the main bedroom was mouldy and the heated towel rail in the bathroom did not work. I cleaned all the cutlery upon arrival as there were hairs and bits in the cutlery tray. The dish brush and foam dish sponge were used and full of bits and hairs. The TV remote controls were a health hazard. We found a used plastic cup on the children's bedroom floor on arrival and a dirty sock on the double bedroom carpet. Apart from the mould in the bathroom, the grout in between the tiles was orange. I cleaned a section easily with a squirt of Dettox and a sponge. All the skirting boards throughout were dirty and the carpets need a deep clean as they are dirty and stained. We are happy to provide photographs of the main issues. We managed to cook a variety of meals quite easily with the table top oven, microwave and hob. The oven trays need replacing though. The position of the crockery cupboard and lack of worktop was challenging though. In summary, we were really disappointed with how much we paid for the holiday against the level of cleanliness and comfort. The owner needs to make a formal complaint to the pubs (especially The Lugger). Driving around on holiday and home on a few hours sleep is dangerous. We were told (by The Lugger manager) that guests staying nearby had also complained and they get complaints every year about the noise.

  • "I was very disappointed with The Lookout."

On getting into The Lookout, there was a stale, musty smell which was unpleasant. (Possibly caused by, what looks like, an area of rot under the hall heater?) The stair carpets are dull, look old and need cleaning or replacement. The carpet in the main living area is dull and quite heavily stained. The photographs on the site give the impression the property is bright and light, it is not. The bathroom is tiny and quite dark and very basic. The door is secured by a slide bolt on the inside, in the event of an emergency it could not be easily opened from the outside. The kitchen is a tiny, galley style, layout. The photos on the Sykes site does not show the cooker or microwave. As described in the amenities section of the property description, there is a small free-standing oven which sits on the work top. To give some idea of size, it is so small it cannot fit a family sized pizza. Above that is a tiny wall mounted microwave. This doesn't have info as to its wattage, so timings are a bit of a guess. On the plus side, the location is fantastic and the feature window in the living room gives beautiful views of the river. There are lots of decent quality utensils and cutlery available. The bedrooms are quite pleasant, if basic. There was a nice welcome pack on arrival. My main issues with this property are; The general appearance of the interior is shabby. Not shabby chic. Just shabby. The bathroom and living/cooking area are not of a standard I have come to expect from a Sykes property. I thought long and hard about giving such a negative review. Something I have not had to do previously with a Sykes property I am aware that this property supplies somebody with their income and I don't want unfairly affect that. However, I feel that to not be honest in my review, would be unfair to prospective holiday makers. I have photographs of some of the issues listed above if they should be needed.

Hi, This review is totally unfair, I’m afraid. None of the issues you’ve raised have been raised by anyone else, leading me to think you had wildly unrealistic expectations from a 300 year old holiday cottage, rather than a 5 star hotel. The carpet was cleaned in march, lots of decorating was done about 2 months ago. The size of the kitchen, being a galley, is clearly detailed and is indeed in the pictures. The description also states it doesn’t have a full size oven. The bathroom has a small window, again, it’s a very old cottage and therefore we can really alter the size of the windows to suit. Never had a complaint before! Perhaps you’re more used to staying in more new, modern accommodation so don’t really appreciate the general idea of staying in a very old character property. I think your expectations are odd, given what you booked. And thank you kindly for considering other holiday makers but I’m sure they’re able to see the pictures, read the description and really love what they book, like everyone else that stays there. I’m sure your opinion is very important to everyone, nonetheless so we do appreciate the feedback. Property Owner

  • "As per last New Year, another wonderful stay at The Lookout."

Our only gripe is the oven - I accept that the kitchen is galley style and compact, but the worktop oven really isn’t too good - food took over twice as long to cook as a normal oven. On the flip side, it did a great job of heating the room! I know space is at a premium though. Otherwise, a welcoming, charming property with wonderful vistas. And as last year, beautifully presented. Thank you!

  • "The Lookout is in a great location for walking & the views are amazing from the lounge over to Fowey."

However the property needs considerable upgrading there was mould on the ceiling & shower in the bathroom & the window also didn’t close. The kitchen was greasy & we had to clean it before we could use anything. The tumble drier wasn’t working & we had a few wet days where that would have been useful. I’m sorry to leave a negative review as I said the location is great.

Thanks for your feedback. The tumble dryer was removed from the property info a while ago as it’s decommissioned. The bathroom is being redecorated in January when the property is empty as it’s probably looking slightly tired and will be upgraded. The property was fully cleaned before your stay so not really sure re the greasy kitchen, our cleaners do a thorough job before every stay and we never received cleanliness complaints. • "Loved this little cottage!"

!!! It’s so quintessentially British seaside! It’s very well equipped and has everything you could need for a week away! The only down side is that there is no garden or nearby grass area for the dogs so every time you need to take them out you have to walk up to the top of the hill which is hard work after a long day exploring the local villages. But if you have no dogs, or fitter legs (!!!), then this place is perfect!!! Thank you for letting us stay in your cosy cottage!

The decor and lighting were perfect- allowing the character of the cottage to sing through, but enhanced with gorgeous art work, perfectly chosen books and everything you could need in the kitchen. We live in an ex holiday cottage in the Lake District, and it looked nothing like this! • "The cottage was lovely tastefully decorated and had a brilliant view."

There were a few issues with cleanliness however. The window seat smelt of dog as soon as we sat on it. I stripped it off and tried to clean it as there were dog stains on it and fur on the window. I then had to hoover which meant picking up rug which had dog wee stains on it. The throw we shook and then saw state of sofa underneath it with dog hair all over it. The bottom of the double bed had 2 broken slats so the mattress sunk through . There were light bulbs missing from.main light and door frames were filthy. I had to clean bannisters window sills door knows doors and frames as all were badly marked with sticky residue and finger prints bad in covid times so all were disinfected. The tops of units were filthy and tiles in shower and on window sill were mouldy. My cloth was black from the tiny window sill. I stripped the sills in bedroom as they were thick with dust. I also washed all suttlery and knives etc on magnetic rack as all were smeared and filthy.. this cleanliness wasn't anything like other cottages we have rented. Surely during covid cleanliness is a must. Disappointed.

Hello, thanks for your feedback but we really don’t recognise most of the issues you’ve mentioned. The cottage is always immaculately cleaned after every stay. Obviously there may be some residual dog hair but it is a cottage that accepts dogs, so some must be expected. Cleanliness is always rated extremely highly, including the stay before yours. The cutlery goes through the dishwasher and it’s only a year old and we’ve never had a problem reported with its performance. The bed simply didn’t have broken slats. I was there the day after this stay and all slats were totally fine on every bed. Not sure why this issue was about. We weren’t able to offer you any kind of refund as requested I’m afraid as we can’t tally your account with the reality of the situation at the cottage. We hope you enjoyed your stay regardless. This was the first time we have stayed in this accommodation. The views from the picture windows were fabulous, the double bed was very comfortable and everywhere was beautifully clean. The downsides were the noise from the pub, however this did stop at midnight and much quieter in the middle of the week. The downstairs toilet facility wasn’t very nice for the adults using the downstairs bedroom. It was more expensive than our usual accommodation, so for these reasons we probably won’t return to the Lookout.

  • "We had a lovely week in The Lookout in between Christmas & NY."

The cottage is immaculately clean with lovely comfy beds, lovely bed line and all the bits and bobs you could possibly need. A real home from home. It’s an exceptionally old and historic cottage so comes with all the “character” of its age. It’s situated in a prime position overlooking the harbour and sandwiched between two pubs so is ideal for people watching and being perfectly on time for the Fowey ferry. Parking is an art but once you get the hang of it and get organised to park at the top of the hill (8min walk) it pays to get a ticket for your whole stay rather than by the day. We would definitely visit again. The only thing we would change would be the shower as it wasn’t particularly powerful.. but really it didn’t matter in the great grand scale of things. The cottage is one you will never forget, it’s totally charming and the owners and housekeeper lovely to deal with and so welcoming.

This also made the rooms cold when the wind was blowing we had to use some blankets on the window because of the draft, this would not be an problem in the summer but a cold day in November..... bathroom was cold as radiator did not work. About the location

POLRUAN

Polperro 6.5 miles; Looe 10 miles; Lostwithiel 10 miles.

Polruan is a small fishing village situated on a steep hill on the Fowey estuary, made famous by the author Daphne du Maurier. It remains unspoilt and retains the atmosphere of an old boat building community and has a small beach. The Polruan chain tower known as Polruan Blockhouse is one of only five known to exist in England, and is a small structure built beside a river or harbour to house the mechanism for raising and lowering a defensive chain to prevent the passage of ships in times of danger. It and the chain tower on the opposite bank of the River Fowey are the earliest chain towers to have been constructed. The village has a Post Office, local store, gift shop and pubs. A five minute ferry ride will take you to Fowey, with a range of sophisticated shops and restaurants. In August, the Fowey Regatta is a fun-filled week of activities and events, including RNLI displays, a carnival, spectacular firework displays and a display of classic yachts.
