“On arrival we discovered that the photographs of the cottage on the booking website were not a true reflection of the poorly maintained cottage.”

While we found the cottage to be extremely clean and tidy, the internal décor and external fabric of the property are in need of maintenance. The showers worked very well and the beds were comfortable (if you sleep with your head at the feet end due to the sloping floors). The kitchen was well equipped, roomy and airy while the snug room was cosy. We chose not to use the lounge due to the constant smell of soot; unusable dvd player (kept sticking and guests had previously mentioned this); and the amazon fire tv provided extremely limited channel choice. No radio was provided with an expectation that you could use your smart phone (if you have one) to access a radio app. However, the app only worked properly in the lounge due to it needing to be close to the wifi hub. The pond was leaking and rather than the owner determine the source of the leak, they expected the gardener (who was very considerate and helpful) to keep refilling it. The cottage is in a great location and we were able to easily travel to the attractions and places we wanted to visit. However, a warning needs to be given to guests about the speeding traffic that use the road outside. Care needs to be taken when exiting and accessing the driveway due to speed of vehicles and poor visibility.

The property

Set within easy reach of the Eden Project and South Cornwall's famous harbour towns and villages, is this quirky, but stylish former mine captains house.

Spacious both inside and out, the house has a wonderful kitchen/dining space separated from the pretty garden and deck by folding glass doors.

On the ground floor, there is a sitting room with a smart TV, a comfortable snug for grown ups to retreat to, followed by the bright and social kitchen with dining space.

A useful utility and downstairs wet room and loo are tucked away to the rear.

Upstairs, there are three decadent bedrooms with two having fabulous en-suite bathrooms and the third being a sizeable twin.

All in all, a superb family homestay with plenty of character and a fabulous feeling of light and space.

About the location

ST BLAZEY

Eden Project 1 mile; Charlestown 3 miles; St Austell 3 miles.

St Blazey is a small town situated three miles east of St Austell and was formerly an important engineering centre for the local mining and railway industries. The town is nowadays best known for being the closest to the Eden Project. Nearby Charlestown is a delightful and much sought after coastal village of stone cottages and regency houses. It is famous for its collection of tall ships riding at anchor in the harbour, the shipwreck museum, excellent pubs and restaurants and easy access to the coastal path. The old market town of St. Austell lies just a few miles from the south coast, and is famous for its China Clay mining history. Today, home to numerous beaches, (including dog-friendly Par Sands) and sub tropical gardens, it is a popular place for tourists, with plenty to see and do. A short drive will take you to fashionable Fowey or the fishing port of Mevagissey, and with lots to do, this is a great year round location.
