  • "As soon as we arrived, Mugwell Barn felt like a home from home with everything we could possibly need for our holiday and with lots of storage to put all our things away."

The welcome pack was very much appreciated and very generous. There are lots of leaflets with places to visit. We were very glad of the fan at night, as we had the most amazing weather during our stay and the barn got quite warm while we were out and about exploring. Lyn and David are the perfect hosts … helpful, friendly, but allowing you your privacy. Mugwell is a great base to explore the area, both Cornwall and Devon. We visited Tavistock, Edgcumbe, Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor as well as the coast (Polperro, Fowey, Bude) and did a few forest walks too. Some of the roads are very narrow, which added to the fun of exploring. We walked to the local pub a couple of times, the food is good, hearty food. The only thing we’d change would be a secure boundary to allow our dogs to roam about safely while we were in the barn, but there is a field close by for the dogs to be let off lead, so it wasn’t really an issue for us and we kept the dogs on long lines when we had the doors open so that they couldn’t roam too far (and so that we could relax without wondering what mischief they were up to!). We would stay at Mugwell Barn again and would definitely recommend it to anyone. Thank you for making us so welcome.

  • "Lovely cottage, however because of them having to use a septic tank the smell in the bathroom is horribly rancid no window can be opened."

Also, there is underfloor heating which was lovely but it tended to get very hot and humid with no window that can be opened just a bifold door to the garden. Nice view tho

I am sorry to hear that you felt there was an unpleasant smell in the bathroom at Mugwell Barn. We have not had this comment before and in a situation such as this, we do encourage guests to let us know at the time, rather than us finding out in the feedback. This would have allowed us to rectify any problem, if we were able, whilst you were here. As far as available ventilation goes, there is also the sliding door in the bedroom which can be opened, as well as the large window by the steps in the lounge area, but we do appreciate that there is only the ventilation fan above the shower, due to construction constraints during the conversion. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to give you 'the tour' on arrival as we were out, but I usually go through these things then. I did ask if you had found out everything you needed, and was assiured that you had, but I would have happily explained further if requested. As far as the Septic Tank goes, again, a common necessity in rural locations, I can assure you that it is in excellent working order. I wonder, in hindsight, if actually the smell was from 'muck-spreading' in adjacent fields, which was particularly pungent due to the warm weather. It is a factor of rural life, and the aroma usually dissipates quite quickly after spreading. My first experience of it was a surprise, as to how it pervaded the whole house through open windows! However, we are quite used to it now, and it doesnt happen very often! Whatever the cause, and we had no issues with any unpleasant smells in the following week, I can only apologise if this situation affected your enjoyment of staying at Mugwell Barn. I know you also had concerns about your baby being unwell and I hope that they recovered quickly from their illness on your return home. I also hope that any future stay in Cornwall will leave you with more pleasant aromatic memories! Kindest regards, Lyn & David Property Owner

You don’t feel over looked or hear anyone. Everything was very very clean. Interesting collections of old stoneware/pottery/glass displayed on high ledge - looked good. Sofa comfortable open kitchen/living space well planned. Large grass area not dog secure but only barn uses so was fine. As I was conscious about walking mud into barn I felt bit more gravel outside in car parking area would be good. One of the best I’ve stayed in. Thank you Lindsay

The quality of crockery was really high which was a plus. Bathroom really great. Views beautiful. We personally found the mattress hard and not overly comfortable but that’s our personal preference, although when the owners come to replace the bed I’d recommend getting at least a medium mattress as a hard mattress isn’t for everyone. Also a larger comfier corner sofa could be accommodated if the interior was reorganised eg we thought the corner chair was a bit of a waste of space. Overall we had a good stay. Thank you!

  • "Hi spoke to owners before as asked and were told a welcome hamper would be in the cottage as ‘there is nothing worse than a long drive and then not being able to have a cuppa’."

We had a 6 hour drive purposely not stopping as provisions would be there but there was nothing there.I text owner and rang he said he would ring later but didn’t bother! We then had to go out again to find a shop as it was hot Tesco fridges we’re all down so then had to try to find somewhere else! We arrived back and we’re greeted by dogs barking in our face before the owner came up to us. She asked if we wanted showing around but I said no as we had already been here an hour but had to go to the shops as nothing was left for us. She said oh is it not in there I said no and I’ve contacted your husband but no real reply. She then said oh we had a very busy day and forgot you were coming!! No apology she just went and found us a packet of buns! I would of expected a ‘ I’m so sorry’ and the next day for our hamper to be given to us with a sorry. Nothing we did not see or speak to the owners once! As we were leaving the owner came out of his cottage and said ‘oh we haven’t been introduced ‘ I was gobsmacked at the lack of welcome or apology and have never had that type of experience ever. It spoilt the beginning of our holiday as in the book people commented on how lovely a welcome they got along with the provisions which were wonderful. Well we got neither nor an apology of any kind. Shocking way to greet people or not greet them. This was our first holiday since covid. What a shame.I will do my own review on Tripadvisor anyway.

I can only apologise again as to the lack of welcome you felt you received. By way of an explanation (not as an excuse), because your arrival was Saturday which is not our usual change-over day, it conflicted with a Parish event in which we were heavily involved - hence our not being there on your arrival. The welcome pack provisions we normally provide are bread, milk, butter, and locally made Cornish Saffron Buns, along with some biscuits and wine if our guests drink wine (which I believe you did not). There is tea, coffee and sugar in the property already, along with several little extras often not provided in holiday cottages. We like to purchase the provisions on the day of your arrival to ensure maximum freshness, but the Buns you received we cannot get on a Saturday and so they were already purchased on the Friday. Unfortunately in the flurry of the day's activity which started at 6am, we had forgotten to acquire said other items. My recollection is that I did apologise to you for not being there, for my husband not calling you back, and offered to provide the items we had not left you, but was told that as you had been to the shop there was no need/point, hence the reason we did not provide them subsequently. Once our guests arrive we make a point of not disturbing them if possible, as we believe that most of our guests come to get away for a quiet break, and we respect that. I have found that guests will come to us if they have any questions, problems or complaints, so I am sorry if you took this lack of contact in a different context. We try to at least say farewell when our guests depart, hence my husband coming out, but we also find that some guests prefer to get on their way which we also respect. I do apologise for your experience with our dogs; I believe that I had just returned and let them out into the field, as normally when guests arrive they are behind the gate/fence if not inside the house. None of this negates the fact that you felt short-changed by your experience here, which is certainly not a typical experience for our guests as indicated by other reviews. I can only offer our sincere apologies again and hope that your experience of Cornwall is more satisfactory for you, should you visit in the future. Property Owner

They are happy to answer any queries on the facilities or places to go. For people planning to stay there I would say that if you think the owners description of how to find the cottage is over-detailed then it is not. Be prepared to navigate several miles of single track roads and to lose contact with your Sat-Nav a few times :-). The instructions are vital. For techies like me, bring enough USB plugs as there are only two USB points in the cottage. Maybe that is fine for most people but half my suitcase is always filled with USB powered devices and chargers :-) There is free WiFi but mobile signals might be an issue for you so make sure you have WiFi calling enabled.

About the location

LUCKETT

Callington is a Cornish market town, rich in mining heritage and overlooked by Kit Hill, the highest point in the area, donated to the people of Cornwall by Prince Charles to celebrate the birth of Prince William. From the top of Kit Hill there are fabulous views across south-east Cornwall as far as Plymouth Sound. Callington is set in the heart of the Tamar Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and offers a good selection of shops, inns and cafes, as well as being the home of Ginsters Cornish pasties. A few miles away, the quaint village of Calstock clings to the steep banks of the river Tamar and is dominated by the splendid Calstock Railway Viaduct, a giant 11-arched stone construction supporting one of Britain’s most picturesque branch lines running through the Tamar Valley. Other interesting places along the river are Cotehele, a beautiful historic house and gardens owned by the National Trust with a small quay and inn, and Morwellham Quay, a theme park that staged a living history production for the BBC and where visitors can explore the rich mining heritage and watch blacksmiths, potters and craftsmen at work. The pannier market town of Tavistock is only nine miles from Callington and is well worth a visit on your way to a day’s walk on Dartmoor. A splendid base to explore south Cornwall and West Devon.

Note: Spring water. Four steps down to main entrance (alternative side entrance without steps). Sofa bed for alternative sleeping.
