  • "Great cottage, old worldy in appearance but very modern and up to date interior."

Interesting log fire in the lounge with accurate instructions and adequate supply of logs, but the kindling needed topping up. Lovely grounds to the rear of the cottage which I suspect would be a particular attraction in summer. The driveway to the property from the road needs attention, the many deep pot holes, gouges and ruts are an unwanted hazard especially in the dark.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed both the cottage and the grounds. The driveway is an unmade road as part of a country estate and a note has now been added to the website to make this clear for future guests. We do hope that we might welcome you back for a return visit at future date. Property Owner

  • "This was a fourth or fifth stay at this property so we knew where to go and what to expect."

A few observations: Garden far more user friendly than it used to be though not dog secure. No washing line anymore which would have been useful. Pint of milk in the fridge and a couple of scones - let’s just say that some properties are rather more generous in their ‘welcome pack’. Fibre broadband was excellent. For the money charged a basic SKY tv package would not break the owners bank using aforesaid broadband. We did not see anyone during our stay. We were advised by Sykes that a Fun Run would be taking place on the Sunday along the adjacent lane so we made ourselves scarce !

  • "TV reception was sometimes non-existent, possibly weather related."

The driveway down to the cottage could potentially be damaging to cars (especially tyres) due to its very uneven surface.

Thank you for your feedback regarding the driveway and we are sorry hear that you had an issue at the time. The driveway is an unmade road as a part of a country estate and so is uneven in parts. Whilst it has not been mentioned before as potentially damaging to cars, we are adding a note to the particulars to make this clear for future guests and are always happy to provide photos in advance to address any concerns. We also appreciate your positive feedback on other aspects of the Lodge and have double checked the TV to ensure the reception is working fine now. We hope to welcome you back again in the future. Quiet and relaxing spot, with a large and well maintained garden, situated on a private estate. Minor quibbles were that the bathroom was a bit chilly and the door was difficult to shut properly. One needs to take care with the driveway up to the cottage, which is sloping and on a curve.

There was some plaster work done inside the lodge which was not finished when we stayed but kindly the owner had given us free tickets for Trebah Gardens. Thank you. Where was the tumbler drier to dry the clothes? Hope to be back someday.

Thank you for your feedback. We are so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. The washing machine at the lodge is a washer drier - apologies if that wasn’t clear beforehand. We appreciate your understanding on the plasterwork, and we are happy to report it’s been painted now. Hope to see you back again someday. Property Owner

Thoroughly enjoyed our time at Penwarne Lodge - everything was there we needed and the cottage was very comfortable and nicely furnished. No issues at all. Conveniently located for Falmouth, Helford Passage, St Mawes, Truro, Mevagissey and a little further for Marazion and Mousehole. • "We have just returned from a fabulous week at Penwarne Lodge."

The lodge had everything we needed. scones, jam and clotted cream, milk, teabags and coffee were a very much appreciated welcome. The large master bedroom's superking size bed was so comfy, and the twin room was a good size too. We did find, as previously said in reviews, the TV kept dropping channels (mainly the itv ones) but we brought our Amazon Firestick so that wasn't a problem and the Wi-Fi was fine for streaming Netflix etc. The garden is large and the grass had all been cut. The sun moves to the front in the afternoon so we moved the table and chairs to the front to make the most of the last sun of the day. Just to note......although The village of Mawnan Smith is just a mile away, it really isn't a good idea to try and walk it....there isn't any form of path and it's quite a busy road....we tried and turned back....much better to take The car.....and while there I'd recommend the pub there, The Red Lion, lovely welcome and food. My only regret for the week is that we ran out of time to go round the gardens. The lodge is a home from home and I would love to return. Thank you Simon for coming to see us before we left.

A great location for exploring West Cornwall. Communication with Simon prior to and during the visit was very helpful. Trying to walk into Mawnan Smith not as easy as implied due to fast traffic on the road, and no obvious foot path alternative. A slight issue with the TV in that several channels are missing, mainly ITV, but of minor importance in such a lovely house!

  • "I’d like to say we had a lovely restful stay and would happily have stayed longer."

The pluses far outweighed the negatives. A downstairs bathroom proved to be less troublesome than anticipated but we missed an extra toilet. The following I hope should be viewed therefore as constructive criticism . The window in dining room was 60% covered by a hydrangea, a lovely plant in the wrong place. This really needs moving or severely trimming. If you’d stayed as we did you would have found it immensely frustrating. Many door handles were extremely stiff and difficult to operate, particularly the bathroom one which obviously one needs to close. I thought I might spend my holiday marooned in there until dispensed with locking! More cups needed please and cutlery just about managed. I hope this helps you to correct the odd glitches we experienced..

Thank you for taking time to give feedback, so glad you enjoyed your stay. We have looked into the points you’ve raised and made changes - the hydrangea is now well pruned ! Property Owner

  • "The house was nice, although cold and the pillows supplied in the bedrooms were very hard for our taste."

The grounds are lovely if you are after woodland and long grass, however this is not at all what we were expecting. The garden is described on your website thus - "Outside there is an acre of garden to enjoy with garden furniture for relaxation on sunny evenings." We then looked at the photos supplied. There is an image of a patch of lawn and the rear elevation of the house. This clearly does not show an "acre" of garden, however there is another image of a very large, bordered garden laid to lawn which is quite easily an acre in size. I don't think it unfair therefore to make the connection that this is likely to be the garden to the property, as there is no reference to say otherwise and no further description of the garden. Our children love to play outdoor games and were looking forward to a big open space. We were incredibly let down to find a lawn that was no bigger than the garden we have at home, and that 90% of the garden could not be used as it is heavily wooded, left to grow into a meadow with only a narrow mowed pathway around the edge, and many areas overgrown with brambles and stinging nettles. It is also incorrect to state that the sunny evenings could be spent outside. The garden was in shade well before evening. If you are advertising an acre of garden, should you not specify that most of this acre is inaccessible? We were so disappointed we ended up spending most of our days out, when our original aim was to relax at the property. Please consider your property advertising more carefully.

Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry to hear you felt you were not able to make full use of the garden. Although there is a large lawn to the back of the Lodge and further lawn to the side and front of property, we do leave an area further away from the property as a meadow garden with a path. We are trying to encourage wildflowers in this area and many visitors enjoy the woodland feel. We have a full-time caretaker/ gardener on site and would have been happy to arrange for some of this lawn to be mown if we had known, so I’m sorry we weren’t able to act on this for you. Clean and comfortable and nicely decorated. Also well placed to visit lots of local attractions. Note to the owner, the kitchen hot tap dripped constantly so we taped it up at one point as it’s a terrible waste. I have to point out too that the TV reception is terrible, we couldn’t get BBC channels at all the whole week we were there and gave up watching others because the signal kept dropping out and freezing. Overall though we enjoyed our stay very much and appreciated the private quiet situation. The cream tea left out for us was a lovely touch too.

  • "We've been coming down to the Penwarne Lodge for a few years now, it is generally speaking our preferred cottage."

We love the secluded location, gardens, space the house has (for 2 people + a dog), comfort, fire place and general presentation of the house. Within the house itself: The bed is massive, we always get a good night sleep in there. Kitchen is of a good standard, extremely spacious and well kitted out. We have cooked a full roast here before easily. Both bedrooms are of a good standard, though the second bedroom is for kids really. Generally the house is in good condition, it could probably do with a lick of paint but don't let that put you off. The only downside is the bathroom, which is downstairs in the coldest part of the house. The shower and bath are good though. The location is one of the real highlights. We usually come September-November. We love the fact its secluded though not too far away from shops. As well as all the beaches, Argal Resovoir is just up the road, we walked around there a few times with the dog its a good walk. Mawnan Smith is a really small village and is just 5 mins away in the car, there is also some national trust gardens just up the road too. The cottage is down a track and whilst it should be fine for most cars, anything lowered would probably struggle to get down there. The people who look after the cottage are always really friendly, if you need anything they are on it straight away via text message. We always enjoy coming to Penwarne, and we will continue to comeback.

Well we did so two fold, the house was so warm, a few changes made to make things more easier for us and we had all the equipment to hand that we needed. Having the Woodburner was perfect as we were able to have the fire going on a couple of evenings but in reality that wasn't needed for the heat as the house was plenty warm enough. Perfect walks from the house that we took advantage of and the dog really enjoyed those, as well as sniffing her way around every inch of the garden and squirrel spotting! We cooked a couple of evenings and all the equipment was available for us. Only one comment that some of the knives could have been sharper but then I'm spoiled at home with really sharp knives. Lovely nights undisturbed sleep, lovely to be able to hear the owls hooting in the distance. We're looking forward to returning to Penwarne, perhaps even in the summer so that we can enjoy everything in the nice weather!

When we arrived I had to give the bathroom a scrub as the toilet hadn't been cleaned and I could tell you what the last guest had for their dinner the night before. Also the bathroom was situated downstairs, so If you have to visit the loo in the night.......was a mission. And the place was a little damp, although we were there on the hottest bank holiday weekend of the year. Also there wasn't enough water in the tank for three of us to shower, so the last person had a cold one!!!! Caused a bit of friction. But in saying that we didn't spend a lot of time in the cottage and made the most of our surroundings, which were beautiful. The village of Mawnan Smith was beautiful. The village pub Black Lion did us a lovely lunch and was dog friendly, and we found a couple of stunning little beaches on our walk.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback following your recent stay at Penwarne Lodge. We have always achieved high marks for cleaning and therefore are very sorry that some elements fell below our normal standards on this occasion. We were able to stay for the whole week, we had a relative arrive for one night during our stay. Unfortunately with the use of the coat hook it came off the wall, my husband was able to re-fix the hook back to the wall but being a carpenter he noted that it was only fixed to a partition wall/dry wall and probably should need better fixing to ensure that this didn't happen again. The house was very warm and inviting, comfortable and clean, we did note that there was an issue with ladybirds at the top of the stairs and we appreciate there would be some sort of 'wildlife' when staying in the country. It in no way affected our comfort or stay. We had our dog with us and we were very comfortable with the facilities available for us and also for our dog, she is well trained and slept on her own bed and we had our own blankets we used on the larger sofa so the dog may sit on the sofa and didn't mark it in any way. We had a wonderful stay at Penwarne Lodge. The house was lovely and surprisingly modern with nice kitchen and bathroom. The garden and surrounding grounds are really beautiful and quiet. All you can hear is the sound of the birds and the breeze blowing through the trees. We had a few cows who managed to get in the garden from the neighbouring field which was quite amusing, but the head gardener has since had words with the farmer. The road leading to the lodge is quite rough so you need to take it nice and easy if you want to keep the wheels on your car. The lodge could do with a bit of a refresh by repainting the external walls and replacing the rotting windows frames, but other than that the place was spot on. The location was ideal as a base for exploring the south west end of Cornwall. Most of the major must see sites are no more than an hour or so drive away.
