"Great cottage, old worldy in appearance but very modern and up to date interior."
Interesting log fire in the lounge with accurate instructions and adequate supply of logs, but the kindling needed topping up. Lovely grounds to the rear of the cottage which I suspect would be a particular attraction in summer. The driveway to the property from the road needs attention, the many deep pot holes, gouges and ruts are an unwanted hazard especially in the dark.
Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed both the cottage and the grounds. The driveway is an unmade road as part of a country estate and a note has now been added to the website to make this clear for future guests. We do hope that we might welcome you back for a return visit at future date. Property Owner
"Everything was perfect about our stay."
Although we did get a bit confused about when the heating came on but the log burner was the perfect remedy. Thank you we would definitely come again. Steve and Helen
"A well established cottage."
Everything you need. Very clean and homely. We are considering next year here. Would be a great visit earlier in the year It is as described in the advert. Thank you to all concerned. Regards Paul and Adele Sharp
"This was a fourth or fifth stay at this property so we knew where to go and what to expect."
A few observations: Garden far more user friendly than it used to be though not dog secure. No washing line anymore which would have been useful. Pint of milk in the fridge and a couple of scones - let’s just say that some properties are rather more generous in their ‘welcome pack’. Fibre broadband was excellent. For the money charged a basic SKY tv package would not break the owners bank using aforesaid broadband. We did not see anyone during our stay. We were advised by Sykes that a Fun Run would be taking place on the Sunday along the adjacent lane so we made ourselves scarce !
"TV reception was sometimes non-existent, possibly weather related."
The driveway down to the cottage could potentially be damaging to cars (especially tyres) due to its very uneven surface.
Thank you for your feedback regarding the driveway and we are sorry hear that you had an issue at the time. The driveway is an unmade road as a part of a country estate and so is uneven in parts. Whilst it has not been mentioned before as potentially damaging to cars, we are adding a note to the particulars to make this clear for future guests and are always happy to provide photos in advance to address any concerns. We also appreciate your positive feedback on other aspects of the Lodge and have double checked the TV to ensure the reception is working fine now. We hope to welcome you back again in the future. "We had a lovely stay, so peaceful and the house was so comfortable and welcoming."
Simon was delightful. Our thanks to Ruth, we replaced some glasses the previous people left cracked and she thanked us with chocolates.
"Excellent accommodation, well looked after and well worth another visit."
We also enjoyed the visit to the "private " garden. The very friendly robins are an added attraction!!
"We loved our time at Penwarne, lovely spacious house, close to the stunning Helford river."
The gardens of the main house were spectacular, well worth a visit, Simon, in charge of the garden, showed us round, he was excellent.
"Very private cottage, which was tastefully decorated and furnished."
Quiet and relaxing spot, with a large and well maintained garden, situated on a private estate. Minor quibbles were that the bathroom was a bit chilly and the door was difficult to shut properly. One needs to take care with the driveway up to the cottage, which is sloping and on a curve.
"This was a lovely holiday lodge on it own surrounding by a beautiful garden."
There was some plaster work done inside the lodge which was not finished when we stayed but kindly the owner had given us free tickets for Trebah Gardens. Thank you. Where was the tumbler drier to dry the clothes? Hope to be back someday.
Thank you for your feedback. We are so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. The washing machine at the lodge is a washer drier - apologies if that wasn’t clear beforehand. We appreciate your understanding on the plasterwork, and we are happy to report it’s been painted now. Hope to see you back again someday. Property Owner
"We had a wonderful week here and am sure will be back."
It was extremely clean, well equipped and homely. They could do with an extra couple of wine glasses but otherwise it was perfect! Thank you!
"Another excellent holiday, we love staying here"
"Lovely lodge in private gated grounds."
Very comfortable and cosy. We'll equipped kitchen with everything you would need. Very clean and maintained. Gardens are large and wooded not secure for more adventurous dogs. Driveway I reversed in as it's quite steep with a curve and the gate opens out onto the gravel road. Very nice cottage for a cosy, quiet and peaceful holiday.
"Comfortable warm house, very well equipped, with a large wooded garden."
Close to lovely coastal walks and to Falmouth for provisions. We would have loved the garden tour but the weather was really against us. I can recommend this house for a peaceful holiday.
Thank you for the lovely feedback - we are glad you enjoyed the peacefulness and the setting. I hope we can offer you a garden tour if you choose to return one day. Property Owner
"Lovely place to stay!"
Thoroughly enjoyed our time at Penwarne Lodge - everything was there we needed and the cottage was very comfortable and nicely furnished. No issues at all. Conveniently located for Falmouth, Helford Passage, St Mawes, Truro, Mevagissey and a little further for Marazion and Mousehole. Several National Trust properties on the doorstep as well as Trebah Garden, which is well worth a visit. Would definitely stay again.
"We have just returned from a fabulous week at Penwarne Lodge."
The lodge had everything we needed. scones, jam and clotted cream, milk, teabags and coffee were a very much appreciated welcome. The large master bedroom's superking size bed was so comfy, and the twin room was a good size too. We did find, as previously said in reviews, the TV kept dropping channels (mainly the itv ones) but we brought our Amazon Firestick so that wasn't a problem and the Wi-Fi was fine for streaming Netflix etc. The garden is large and the grass had all been cut. The sun moves to the front in the afternoon so we moved the table and chairs to the front to make the most of the last sun of the day. Just to note......although The village of Mawnan Smith is just a mile away, it really isn't a good idea to try and walk it....there isn't any form of path and it's quite a busy road....we tried and turned back....much better to take The car.....and while there I'd recommend the pub there, The Red Lion, lovely welcome and food. My only regret for the week is that we ran out of time to go round the gardens. The lodge is a home from home and I would love to return. Thank you Simon for coming to see us before we left.
"Handsome house and a delightful property in wonderful grounds with all facilities available to make for an enjoyable stay."
A great location for exploring West Cornwall. Communication with Simon prior to and during the visit was very helpful. Trying to walk into Mawnan Smith not as easy as implied due to fast traffic on the road, and no obvious foot path alternative. A slight issue with the TV in that several channels are missing, mainly ITV, but of minor importance in such a lovely house!
"I’d like to say we had a lovely restful stay and would happily have stayed longer."
The pluses far outweighed the negatives. A downstairs bathroom proved to be less troublesome than anticipated but we missed an extra toilet. The following I hope should be viewed therefore as constructive criticism . The window in dining room was 60% covered by a hydrangea, a lovely plant in the wrong place. This really needs moving or severely trimming. If you’d stayed as we did you would have found it immensely frustrating. Many door handles were extremely stiff and difficult to operate, particularly the bathroom one which obviously one needs to close. I thought I might spend my holiday marooned in there until dispensed with locking! More cups needed please and cutlery just about managed. I hope this helps you to correct the odd glitches we experienced..
Thank you for taking time to give feedback, so glad you enjoyed your stay. We have looked into the points you’ve raised and made changes - the hydrangea is now well pruned ! Property Owner
"The house was nice, although cold and the pillows supplied in the bedrooms were very hard for our taste."
The grounds are lovely if you are after woodland and long grass, however this is not at all what we were expecting. The garden is described on your website thus - "Outside there is an acre of garden to enjoy with garden furniture for relaxation on sunny evenings." We then looked at the photos supplied. There is an image of a patch of lawn and the rear elevation of the house. This clearly does not show an "acre" of garden, however there is another image of a very large, bordered garden laid to lawn which is quite easily an acre in size. I don't think it unfair therefore to make the connection that this is likely to be the garden to the property, as there is no reference to say otherwise and no further description of the garden. Our children love to play outdoor games and were looking forward to a big open space. We were incredibly let down to find a lawn that was no bigger than the garden we have at home, and that 90% of the garden could not be used as it is heavily wooded, left to grow into a meadow with only a narrow mowed pathway around the edge, and many areas overgrown with brambles and stinging nettles. It is also incorrect to state that the sunny evenings could be spent outside. The garden was in shade well before evening. If you are advertising an acre of garden, should you not specify that most of this acre is inaccessible? We were so disappointed we ended up spending most of our days out, when our original aim was to relax at the property. Please consider your property advertising more carefully.
Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry to hear you felt you were not able to make full use of the garden. Although there is a large lawn to the back of the Lodge and further lawn to the side and front of property, we do leave an area further away from the property as a meadow garden with a path. We are trying to encourage wildflowers in this area and many visitors enjoy the woodland feel. We have a full-time caretaker/ gardener on site and would have been happy to arrange for some of this lawn to be mown if we had known, so I’m sorry we weren’t able to act on this for you. "This is a lovely property in a beautiful setting."
Clean and comfortable and nicely decorated. Also well placed to visit lots of local attractions. Note to the owner, the kitchen hot tap dripped constantly so we taped it up at one point as it’s a terrible waste. I have to point out too that the TV reception is terrible, we couldn’t get BBC channels at all the whole week we were there and gave up watching others because the signal kept dropping out and freezing. Overall though we enjoyed our stay very much and appreciated the private quiet situation. The cream tea left out for us was a lovely touch too.
Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for drawing our attention to the tap and the aerial. Both have now been attended to and are in full working order. Property Owner
"Excellent property - clean, decor was excellent, kitchen had all the facilities."
Property itself was cosy, especially with log burner going in the evenings. Would point out that the (lovely) garden is definitely not dog secure, our spaniel got out in at least three different places ! 10 mins from Gylly beach and also Falmouth. Would definitely choose location and property again, we really enjoyed our stay
"This is our second visit to Penwarne Lodge and it was a beautiful as the first time."
The house was spotlessly clean and had everything you need. The WiFi has been upgraded and we had no issues with loss of signal/reception. We can not wait to visit again.
"Beautiful peaceful cottage, beautiful garden with Camellias in flower."
Very dog friendly he had a lovely holiday with lots of sticks in the garden.Lots of local walks, would love to come again.
"What a hidden gem this beautiful lodge/cottage is."
A lovely well equipped kitchen and a very comfortable and very large bed made this place stand out for us. The lush surroundings and stunning views were amazing and so peaceful. The housekeeper, Simon, was attentive and very responsive as well as the lovely owner too. We were greeted with cream teas and a pint of milk in the fridge on arrival - These are good people
"Excellent location to explore the Lizard and a perfect hideaway."
Bed was gloriously comfortable. One thing let the whole experience down and that was the fact that the fridge is broken causing items to freeze and defrost leaving a pool of water in the bottom every morning. Far from ideal at christmas.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback and we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed Penwarne Lodge and the location. The owner has confirmed that the fridge is working perfectly now. A previous customer must have adjusted the temperature dial and this has now been returned to the correct setting. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Property Owner
"We've been coming down to the Penwarne Lodge for a few years now, it is generally speaking our preferred cottage."
We love the secluded location, gardens, space the house has (for 2 people + a dog), comfort, fire place and general presentation of the house. Within the house itself: The bed is massive, we always get a good night sleep in there. Kitchen is of a good standard, extremely spacious and well kitted out. We have cooked a full roast here before easily. Both bedrooms are of a good standard, though the second bedroom is for kids really. Generally the house is in good condition, it could probably do with a lick of paint but don't let that put you off. The only downside is the bathroom, which is downstairs in the coldest part of the house. The shower and bath are good though. The location is one of the real highlights. We usually come September-November. We love the fact its secluded though not too far away from shops. As well as all the beaches, Argal Resovoir is just up the road, we walked around there a few times with the dog its a good walk. Mawnan Smith is a really small village and is just 5 mins away in the car, there is also some national trust gardens just up the road too. The cottage is down a track and whilst it should be fine for most cars, anything lowered would probably struggle to get down there. The people who look after the cottage are always really friendly, if you need anything they are on it straight away via text message. We always enjoy coming to Penwarne, and we will continue to comeback.
"Great cottage, great location, very clear instructions and had everything we needed to enjoy our stay."
Will certainly be going back.
"We had a fantastic stay at Penwarne Lodge, clean, beautifully decorated, comfy beds and lovely private gardens."
We have booked to go again.
"Internet and TV signals kept dropping out but the caretaker had someone in to look at that after we left, didn't affect the quality of our stay at all."
Other wise all good but floor looked clean but was actually very dirty and we mopped it 3 times to get it clean. Overall by far the best inland location we have stayed at, can thoroughly recommend it.
We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at Penwarne Lodge and the countryside location. The owners have raised your concerns with the cleaner and they will ensure the floor is given close attention in future. As with all properties we cannot guarantee wifi speeds but steps have since been taken to ensure there is a stable TV signal at the property, so thank you for bringing this to our attention. "Third visit to Penwarne Lodge and nothing has changed since our last visit two years ago apart from a new cupboard under the stairs."
Peaceful location off the beaten track. Dog friendly. No frills accomodation which is fine for us. Dining area remains 'gloomy' with insufficient lighting. We pointed this out two years ago. Certainly happy to return though seven hours down and eight hours back does begin to take its toll - an age thing ! An electrical extension lead would be handy as would an outside tap for dog washing. Simon as friendly and helpful as usual.
"Penwarne Lodge is idyllic, surrounded by peaceful scenic gardens and farm land down a long unmade drive, (it does have a few potholes) well away from any road noise."
If you want the holiday to be memorable with bird song, away from the hectic daily work life, then it is the perfect escape. What is also refreshing is the Estate Management Team/Owner allows you to get on with enjoying your stay without being intrusive. If you require anything you have a contact number, but in our case hardly used.
"Beautiful pristine house in glorious gardens."
A delight to be in.
"We had the most amazing 4 nights in Cornwall and Penwarne Lodge was all we had hoped for and more."
We loved the countryside location and it wasn't far from the coast. The super king bed was one of the best beds I have slept in. The stairs are quite steep, not a problem for us but might not suit everyone particularly as the bathroom is also downstairs. Shower was lovely and hot, kitchen facilities also excellent. All in all a lovely property which we couldn't fault. Thank you.
"Loved every moment of our stay."
Fabulous cottage in a secluded, pretty location with a fabulous sense of space outside. Felt like home away from home.
"Lovely stay with fresh milk, cake and logs provided."
Clean and comfortable accommodation. The lodge has a nice garden but it isn't secure and the kitchen doesn't have any base ingredients for cooking (oil, salt, pepper) so make sure you bring them. We made full use of the fire as it was chilly. Trebah gardens is definitely worth a visit, as is the seal sanctuary.
"We really enjoyed Penwarne Lodge again, we stayed the same time last year and it was perfect and so we wanted to re-create that."
Well we did so two fold, the house was so warm, a few changes made to make things more easier for us and we had all the equipment to hand that we needed. Having the Woodburner was perfect as we were able to have the fire going on a couple of evenings but in reality that wasn't needed for the heat as the house was plenty warm enough. Perfect walks from the house that we took advantage of and the dog really enjoyed those, as well as sniffing her way around every inch of the garden and squirrel spotting! We cooked a couple of evenings and all the equipment was available for us. Only one comment that some of the knives could have been sharper but then I'm spoiled at home with really sharp knives. Lovely nights undisturbed sleep, lovely to be able to hear the owls hooting in the distance. We're looking forward to returning to Penwarne, perhaps even in the summer so that we can enjoy everything in the nice weather!
"Unfortunately we had an extremely wet week so we really appreciated having such a lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings to come back to each day ."
"The cottage was situated in a beautiful setting, but the cleanliness was a little off."
When we arrived I had to give the bathroom a scrub as the toilet hadn't been cleaned and I could tell you what the last guest had for their dinner the night before. Also the bathroom was situated downstairs, so If you have to visit the loo in the night.......was a mission. And the place was a little damp, although we were there on the hottest bank holiday weekend of the year. Also there wasn't enough water in the tank for three of us to shower, so the last person had a cold one!!!! Caused a bit of friction. But in saying that we didn't spend a lot of time in the cottage and made the most of our surroundings, which were beautiful. The village of Mawnan Smith was beautiful. The village pub Black Lion did us a lovely lunch and was dog friendly, and we found a couple of stunning little beaches on our walk.
Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback following your recent stay at Penwarne Lodge. We have always achieved high marks for cleaning and therefore are very sorry that some elements fell below our normal standards on this occasion. Our housekeepers are available 7 days a week and had we known sooner we would most certainly have dealt with this problem for you. Despite the points raised we are pleased you enjoyed the setting of the lodge, it really is a beautiful part of the world. Property Owner
"Penwarne Lodge was a lovely place to stay and experience the wonderful Cornwall environment."
We felt very welcomed to this cottage with a fresh cake to enjoy with a cup of tea when we arrived and wood for the fireplace, which was a great benefit as we had a few cold nights, The additional tour of the estate's garden by Simon the head gardener made this stay even more special.
"The lodge is set in it own large peaceful garden."
We enjoyed the arranged visit to the big garden with the gardener Simon. A lovely garden with some wonderful magnolias. The facilities in the cottage were great, everything you could want. The reason for this visit was to see the spring gardens nearby, Trebar, Trellisick, and Glendurgan and they were all spectacular.
"Well equipped, clean and comfortable accommodation but what made it special was the helpfulness, friendliness and availability of the team looking after the accommodation."
The location was wonderfully peaceful, yet with easy access to all amenities when needed.
"The cottage was wonderful, we had contacted the property manager before our arrival and confirmed our arrival and details of gaining entry."
We were able to stay for the whole week, we had a relative arrive for one night during our stay. Unfortunately with the use of the coat hook it came off the wall, my husband was able to re-fix the hook back to the wall but being a carpenter he noted that it was only fixed to a partition wall/dry wall and probably should need better fixing to ensure that this didn't happen again. The house was very warm and inviting, comfortable and clean, we did note that there was an issue with ladybirds at the top of the stairs and we appreciate there would be some sort of 'wildlife' when staying in the country. It in no way affected our comfort or stay. We had our dog with us and we were very comfortable with the facilities available for us and also for our dog, she is well trained and slept on her own bed and we had our own blankets we used on the larger sofa so the dog may sit on the sofa and didn't mark it in any way. Thank you again for letting us stay at your property, we really enjoyed this property and staying in this location and the local walks and pub was lovely.
"Lovely stay would definitely recommend this cottage"
"It was a lovely place ideal to take the dog , very well equipped."
Nice and quiet and in spring when the flowers are in bloom it must be exceptional
"Second visit to this property."
Quiet and peaceful. All very much as expected. One or two little niggles. Energy saving lightbulbs are very gloomy especially in the lounge and dining area. Provision of a hair dryer would have been useful. No instructions for washing machine. Quite happy to return in the future
"The fact that basics such as milk, loo roll, washing up liquid and washing machine tablets were supplied was very much appreciated as was the cake!"
Very different from cottages on the north coast. Logs were also appreciated as the fire was needed each evening to stave off the damp which was the only criticism of the cottage. However, it was an old house so should have been expected. Excellent facilities, welcoming caretaker and spotlessly clean. Fantastic. Sykes staff were extremely helpful when I asked questions. Nothing was too much trouble and I would definitely use you again. Thanks for a lovely holiday.
"We really enjoyed our stay at Penwarne Lodge."
The cottage was well equipped and in a peaceful setting, surrounded by gardens and trees. The interior decor was well though out and our dog loved the outdoor space! The only downsides were that the track was very bumpy and the cottage seemed a bit damp inside. Although we did visit during a rainy week in August so maybe that was the issue.
"What a beautiful place!"
We had a wonderful stay at Penwarne Lodge. The house was lovely and surprisingly modern with nice kitchen and bathroom. The garden and surrounding grounds are really beautiful and quiet. All you can hear is the sound of the birds and the breeze blowing through the trees. We had a few cows who managed to get in the garden from the neighbouring field which was quite amusing, but the head gardener has since had words with the farmer. The road leading to the lodge is quite rough so you need to take it nice and easy if you want to keep the wheels on your car. The lodge could do with a bit of a refresh by repainting the external walls and replacing the rotting windows frames, but other than that the place was spot on. The location was ideal as a base for exploring the south west end of Cornwall. Most of the major must see sites are no more than an hour or so drive away. We visited Lands End and Eden Project which are not that far away from the estate if your prepared to travel. We fully recommend Penwarne Lodge, its a hidden gem!
"Cottage was everything we could have hoped for."
Private, but also friendly caretaker was available if we needed anything. Extremely comfortable with all facilities excellent. Beautiful location in a beautiful area.
"The description of the property and facilities was accurate."
