  • "Hi there, We’ve been to the smaller house before and we love the location and the calm and space, and members of our party had visited the big house before but we were all taken aback by the high cost in relation to how little upkeep and care the house seems to have had."

The window was broken in the hallway, and must have been so for a long time. It was cold and seemed careless to leave it permanent broken. No logs were supplied (we own a cottage ourselves and provide logs and kindling and charge a fraction of the cost of Polcreek.) The tap in the bathroom was broken, it wasn’t very straightforward getting hold of Sykes, the website doesn’t create an obvious contact us phone number for problems, we found the contact in the book but wondered why Sykes don’t make it easier to pick up the phone if there’s an issue. However, once we did they came fast to fix it. The broken tap, with a note above it saying it breaks regularly felt unsafe with a very hot water that couldn’t be controlled and kids using it. We were left an out of date cream tea. The kitchen could do with more equipment, for cooking etc. The cupboards were dirty. And the carpets not only smelt musty but also triggered asthma type symptoms in the living room and room above it. I imagine because of the sea being close by it gets damp but it felt like they are very old, and for close to 4K for a weeks stay I was expecting an environment that felt like more care was taken to maintain a comfortable stay. I found correspondence emails from Sykes were not especially welcoming, but rather had an emphasis on the money that would be taken if breakages happened and the strict rules about leaving on time. These are obviously important points to be made but didn’t feel there was balance with a more pleasant welcoming tone. I won’t publish this below so you / the owners have the opportunity to take it onboard. However, I really felt that the standard of the house which is rough around the edges would be ok, if the cost reflected it, but it doesn’t.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. Polcreek Farmhouse is owned by a small family company with one property. The owners want all guests to feel that the house is a relaxed 'home from home' and are always disappointed if guests come away not feeling satisfied. They work hard to keep the house well maintained. The house is listed and some repairs are not as straight forward due to this. The owners of the property have an ongoing programme of improvements and these include some of the items you have mentioned. They thank you for your feedback and will take this onboard. Sykes would also like to address the issues you have raised - Logs are not usually supplied (other than a starter pack) in self-catering properties, particularly during the summer months. With regard to the bathroom tap, our contact email is listed in the property information book so that you are able to contact us if necessary. We were notified of this issue late evening and the tap was fixed by the afternoon of the next day, so we are pleased that we could get this resolved quickly for you. The handyman also looked at the window, but it could not be fixed during your stay as it needed to removed, the intention was not to leave it permanently broken. Had you raised the issues about the kitchen equipment and cupboards during our communications we would have been happy to help with this. Our emails are intended to be helpful and informative and we endeavour to ensure the tone is pleasant and welcoming - these are usually well-received by our guests. We will consider your comments and thank you for feeding back - Cornish Cottage Holidays Property Owner

In both instances they were on level ground and the person who was in it is of below average adult weight. When we looked at the canvas we could see that the canvas was well weathered. In one case there was a fray that became a tear. I dont think we did anything other than use them reasonably. Anyway we are sorry for the damage.

  • "It's a lovely quiet location & a nice house but could do with some TLC & better maintenance."

We were told that the upstairs flush had a problem plus a tap that wouldn't turn off & couldn't be fixed because the stoptap wouldn't turn off not a good start to our holiday before we even got there. South west water would come whilst we were there & they did disrupting our stay, but they didn't do anything to the stop tap. There's also a notice in the bathroom saying the sink taps were delicate why not replace them with robust ones? The heating wasn't up to the job especially in the bedrooms it needs updating. In one bedroom the bedside lamp had a round pin plug so wouldn't fit the square pin socket not good enough. It's a lovely place but needs updating.

  • "We loved Polcreek Farmhouse!"

So so peaceful, no road noise at any time. Beautiful historic farmhouse which feels so natural and homely inside. there were 7 adults and 2 dogs in our party and it felt very comfortable for us all to be together in either the dining room or the living room. The kitchen was really well kitted out, and the grounds around were lovely. Short walk to cliff tops and beaches. Also loved that the house itself was so full of fascinating nooks and crannies and full of history and books! Little phone signal but the Wi-fi covered it. Thanks for a truly wonderful stay.

Lots of books & board games. Comfortable firm beds. We also like the situation - isolated but in attractive farming countryside. The coastal path is nearby as is Carne Beach (which was full of dogs being exercised when we walked by !). Portloe & Portscatho were attractive villages, although they would be very busy in the school summer holidays. Highly recommended for those who like to walk the coastal paths ending up in a village pub. We recommend Veryan & its pub.

  • "The housekeeping was overall very sloppy."

For example : No rubbish bags left of any colour. Entrance porch very dirty and littered with mouse droppings. Outside shower dirty and floor of shower room unswept. One drawer in main bedroom still full of clothes. Upstairs shower outlet well clogged and smelt terrible. Ceiling light not working in bathroom. Basin hot tap unmanageable. Dishwasher not empty on arrival. Overall disappointing housekeeping and certainly not up to normal and expected standards.

Thank you for your comments, we’re very sorry to hear things weren’t perfect for you. We wish you had let us know at the time as we would have been happy to help resolve for you. We’d like to reassure you (and other guests) that following receipt of your feedback we have discussed the issues with the cleaners and they have accordingly focused their attentions in order to ensure that all of these areas are tackled. We’re really sorry it wasn’t right for you on this occasion, as you’ll see from all the other feedback it’s usually perfect. We’re confident this was a one off and we hope you’ll be happy to return in future. Property Owner

The farmhouse was cosy and warm with an open fire and heating for those beautiful sea misty days... the farmhouse kitchen was well equipped and we cooked amazing food... my family and I enjoyed the tranquil and beautiful setting of the farmhouse which has an interesting history and character, plenty of space for outdoor badminton and bowls... my 2 year old granddaughter spent most of her time playing in the adjacent half acre of land with apples trees and sea views; farm life and birds... It was a wonderful place for our family to get away from the city, following an extensive lockdown period... most welcomed and appreciated... plenty of coastal walks, lovely nearby beaches, and we plan to book a trip to the farmhouse on a regular basis, dates permitting... I would like to say a big thank you!

  • "We spent a lovely stay with our in laws and adult children visiting the local area, which is stunning."

The house is down a grassy track and is in a most peaceful area. The garden loops around it so there’s always a place to sit and catch the sun. The orchard area is particularly lovely as the sea is just in front. We noticed a footpath on one of the maps but couldn’t find it very easily. The walk to the beach takes about 15 mins and was well worth it to take a swim. Lovely traditional house with lots of games and toys. It was a pleasure seeing the owners family artefacts, pictures, photos dotted about the house. The housekeeper did a great job in getting the house ready and we really appreciated the fruit loaf left for us. Thank you for a lovely stay. We really enjoyed it. We didn’t bring our dog in the end but she would have loved it. Thank you the Taylors, and Groves family.

We stayed during a wild and windy November weekend, which was beautiful and atmospheric. I imagine this property during Spring and Summer must be wonderful. We arrived to find the house warm and welcoming with fresh flowers and hearty tea loaf for our consumption. Everywhere was clean and tidy, and the kitchen is well stocked with crockery, cutlery, pots and pans. The shower in the bathroom was efficient and the footed bath a little touch of luxury. The men in our group also enjoyed the outside shower room. Several cupboards contained board games to play, and one cupboard contained enough toys to keep our two year old entertained all weekend. The bedrooms were spacious, comfortable and contained a vast selection of books. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property and will return.

And the book collection in the house was pretty amazing - perfect books for all ages. All in all a lovely house in an ideal position. The walk down to the beach with amazing views was a real treat. The property

Polcreek Farmhouse is a splendid typically Cornish 17th century family house, in a tranquil setting at the end of a lane, 1¼ miles from Veryan.

It is very private, only the occasional farmer herding sheep passes by.

This is a wonderful place for a carefree large family gathering, or group of friends.

The big living room has an open fire with the original slate and the equally big dining room has a sensible slate floor, through to the farmhouse-style kitchen with breakfast table and stools; there is also a ground floor WC and, ten paces from the kitchen door, a room with shower toilet and basin ideal for sandy bodies.

Head upstairs to the four bedrooms, a king-size double and three twin rooms, lovely views from up here, but mind that low lintel on the landing!

Also, a family bathroom.

A peaceful family-friendly place in a great position for enjoying the lovely coastline.

There is a small front garden and ½ acre of mown grassy space with rustic table and chairs.

Carne and Pendower beaches are a mile away (the two merge at low-tide to give a mile of sand).

National Trust land surrounds the house to a mile radius.

If you can drag yourself away nearby St.Mawes and Mevagissey are worth a visit, along with the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £250.
