You had all the utensils we needed to cook our meals. Your beds were very comfortable and the big bathroom saved us every day, to dry our wetsuits after our swim and then to be ready to go again. The location was fantastic and we could walk everywhere and also enjoyed the coastal paths. This was excellent value for money. The owners were very kind and helpful to speak to. I can highly recommend this property.

  • "The outside seating area is in need of some TLC."

We didn't use it but noticed lots of mold, bird droppings which seam to attract flies. Sorry but it was not very nice. Everything else was great.

Thanks you for drawing the issues with the outside area to our attention. This area is small and enclosed, and moss does tend to collect there, particularly during stormy weather. The cleaners do keep an eye on this, but it is not practical for them to completely clear it every changeover. They have spent extra time doing on this since your visit, and we believe that it is now at the standard which guests rightly expect. We are glad that you felt that everything else was great, and we hope you will return again soon. Property Owner

The view window of Plymouth Sound with it's Naval, Commercial, and Pleasure craft (small sailboat racing on Wednesdays in Cawsand Bay) is exceptional. Don't bother with a car! The location with miles of walks will take your two weeks to complete and the beauty and grandeur of Cornwall is everywhere. Plenty of close by Pubs are available as is a small yet well stocked store. Of course I'm biased a I was born and bred in this neck of the woods and return from Western Canada regularly for rejuvenation.

  • "The only slight negative is the comfort of the settee, which I notice has been mentioned before."

The sofa is not particularly substantial and not suited to sitting in for more than short periods. Not a problem with an active holiday where the cottage is used as a base but worth bearing in mind if long nights in were the aim. Otherwise we had no complaints and will definitely return. The unique selling points for this cottage are the fabulous sea views from the lounge and the traffic free location, which both make for a very peaceful and relaxing break.

Thank you for your comments. We have now replaced the sofa, and are confident that you will find this a significant improvement. We look forward to you staying again soon. Property Owner

  • "We have stayed at Chough Cottage a number of times over the past 10-12 years and have always been happy with the quality and cleanliness of the property."

However, sadly this time we felt the cottage was grubby - dusty, dirty switches, the cutlery drawer was in need of a thorough clean the frying pan was dirty and the oven hadn't been cleaned prior to our arrival. We also found food left in the cupboard and freezer compartment. We feel that it is time for an overall update especially the hob and oven, the towels could do with replacing - they were very worn. The little courtyard area was neglected and not a pleasant place at all - not as per your description. Despite this we still enjoyed our stay but felt we should be honest with our feedback.

We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at Chough Cottage, but we apologise that in some areas standards fell below what you and we would wish for. We are grateful to you for bringing these to our attention, and will of course address these issues. As you will know from previous stays, the inner courtyard is small and enclosed. On our recent visit we repainted the walls of the courtyard and cleaned the decking. We realise that some moss tends to fall into the decking, especially during stormy weather. The cleaners do keep an eye on this, but it is not practical for them to completely clear it every changeover. We are aware that the electric hob is a little old-fashioned. It has been hard to do upgrading in the context of the pandemic, but we are looking to upgrade this as soon as we have a gap in bookings and access by the relevant trades is possible. We have spoken to the cleaners, and are confident that the cleaning issues were a one off, as they are normally very thorough. We have now replaced some duvets and bedlinen, and also checked all the towels. Most towels are thick and fluffy, but we have purchased new ones to replace the few which were less good. We hope this reassures you, and hope that you will book to stay again soon. Property Owner

However, even though the cottage welcomes dogs, if you have a large elderly dog that doesn't like stairs this cottage may not be a suitable choice, as the living room is located up a narrow staircase, and also has a few steps directly as you enter the front door which our elderly Lab had problems coping with. We also found the seating not very comfortable for a cosy night in and the TV system was poor.

And the welcome wine, biscuits and note are a lovely touch. The decor is tasteful and clean. The only minor things to note are a cooler duvet for the summer would be very much appreciated, the sofa has seen better days and the back cushions are now sagging (you can get them re-filled), and please could you install a retension ring on the front outside wall so that we could bring a paddle board with us and tether it to the front of the cottage, as it is impossible to bring one through the house to the back courtyard which is a shame, even when partly deflated. But other than that we love it!

We are glad you enjoyed your holiday at Chough Cottage. Sorry to hear that you had problems with light in the front bedroom, we are aware it can be very bright on sunny mornings. The window is actually fitted with 2 blinds: the front one with the seagull pattern and a rear cream blackout roller blind set into the window recess. • "The property is well situated, not far from Plymouth with public transport links, yet in a serene location."

There is a local shop, friendly pubs, and a restaurant. The cottage is set on three levels. It includes a spacious bathroom, two bedrooms, and a large living space which includes a kitchen/dining area. The owners have gone out of their way to give the cottage a 'homely' feel. It is comfortable, warm and 'snug'. The 'cares of the world' will feel as distant as the moon, which incidentally you can observe at night with the binoculars provided, over the wonderful views across Plymouth Sound. I would highly recommend.

The rest of the cottage was OK though. We'll equipped and quirky which we like and the sea views were fab. Just not very comfortable.

We have spoken to the owners and they have advised us of the following: Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry to hear you did not find one of the mattresses at the property comfortable. It is a slatted bed with a good quality sprung pocket mattress and memory foam topper to ensure total comfort. The caretaker and all the previous guests have said it is very comfortable. Obviously mattress preferences are very individual. We are glad that you enjoyed the sea views and the other aspects of the property. Property Owner

  • "Having been to this location many times (50 times in as many years) I have since 2010 stayed in different houses in Cawsand."

Chough Cottage is by far the best for small families/groups. It was clean, beautifully presented and well equipped. The thoughtful notices explaining things were very helpful. The only thing that gave me a hint of concern (and this is being picky) I would prefer the shower door to be a hinged opening door rather than sliding. The space in and out of the shower was quite small and, it occured to me as a grandparent, if you are a parent trying to help your young child shower - it is very difficult to manoeuvre in such a tight space. The shower hose itself was also very short in length and perhaps would benefit from a longer hose. The shower head needed cleaning out or limescale remover as it was a bit dribbly in places. It might be interesting to know that you can now buy shower heads that are suitable for low water pressure which the shower clearly had. That said - just a delight and out of all the houses that I have stayed in in Kingsand/Cawsand - arguably one of the best and I will most definitely wish to return there. It is rare to find a holiday home that fits that makes you feel so at home and not as a "guest" and Chough Cottage succeeded in being a real home from home. Congratulations to the home owners for thinking the whole guest experience through so carefully.

  • "Chough Cottage is a lovely, well-equipped property in a great location."

The view from the lounge window is stunning - we were lucky enough to be there in a heatwave but I could enjoy gazing out on that view in any weather. The only (slight) minus point is the one very small loo for all who stay there, but it’s difficult to see how that could be changed with the age and layout of the cottage - the character of the rest of the house more than compensates. The description of how to access the cottage, parking for unpacking and key details were all helpful. We would recommend a weekly ticket for the village car park as good value and easy. We would love to return.

Gorgeous views out to sea, we were very comfortable. We love Kingsand and wanted to be close to the sea front and this was a great location, we never left the village. My only negative comment was there were too many signs pinned everywhere, I know they are meant to be helpful but there were just too many so I really felt like I was in someone else’s home with so many dos and don’ts, put these in the information book, I have never seen so many in a holiday cottage.

The property

In Kingsand, an 'upside down' little house on three levels with good sea views, snuggled in a row of 18th century houses, two minutes stroll from the beach and Coast Path.

Access is from a narrow lane which has no passing traffic.

At ground level there are two bedrooms: a twin, and a double with French windows to a tiny courtyard, imaginatively done just for two; ground floor toilet.

Then head down stairs to a lower level to a smart, roomy bathroom.

Up on the first floor there is a light, open-plan living/dining room and kitchen area with those lovely time-wasting sea views - binoculars provided to observe the shipping which passes.

Thoroughly well done, comfortable and convenient.

Take a day walking in nearby Mount Edgcumbe's 800 acres or take the seasonal pedestrian ferry to Plymouth.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.
