  • "Despite having made a phone call to Sykes/the owner before booking to ensure the described rear courtyard was secure for our dogs, and been assured this was the case, on arrival it was clear this was not for two reasons."

One, the gated rear entrance had no lock as it was in fact a thoroughfare for the next door property, and the courtyard belonging to the cottage was dissected by this alleyway. The courtyard for the cottage is off this thoroughfare which had no gates and was open to it. You have to come out of the cottage which backs onto the alley, and cross it to access the garden. Two, there was dog excrements (three piles of!) in the cottage courtyard when we arrived late Friday. A call to the managing agent was made and message left requesting a call back. As this was out of hours I expected a call first thing Monday. However no one called despite having described the problem and asked for a return call. When I called on Tuesday late afternoon the agent said they had not got the message and said they were surprised as they had checked the property themselves. That being the case it can only have come from someone using the alleyway and entering the open courtyard. This renders the courtyard not secure and clearly open to the public. I have seen the owners response to another review saying the courtyard was not secure. They suggest that house rules are dogs are not to be left alone in the property and this includes the courtyard. To be clear we are happy to, and did follow this rule, however we cannot sit and relax where our dogs are off the lead and anyone might open the gate and walk through the alleyway as they are likely to run to see who is coming into their space (a natural instinct) and be at risk of getting out onto the road. If I have to sit in the garden with my dogs on a lead I may as well be out in public. This is what we did in the end. We didn’t use the courtyard and made it clear to the agent that we would not be doing this or cleaning up members of the publics dog foul. Other feedback is generally more positive. Cottage is pretty and compact. Great log burner for the damp conditions in both the cottage and the weather! Kitchen generally well equipped. A bit stingy to only say that one black bin bag of rubbish will be collected, for a weeks stay this felt very impractical. We ended up walking rubbish down to the bins at the long stay car park where was parked, there are large public bins there, included in the £55.10 per week parking fees! Bed was comfy, sheets clean and well made.paint work and carpets looking a bit grubby in places. Floors downstairs needed a good clean when we arrived as they were still gritty presumably from sand tracking in on previous occupants footwear. Nice touch to leave spices for use, however many of these were out of date and as the cottage was quite damp the powders had solidified and they would be best thrown away. Overall I’d give this stay a 3/5.

Thank you for taking the time to give your honest feedback. It is always so disappointing to read a review like this, especially given the number of people that have thoroughly enjoyed their stay at Penhale with or without dogs. Firstly I am so sorry that the number in our welcome folder was incorrect and didn’t automatically re route your call through to the management team as it always has in the past, this has now been rectified in both the welcome folder and the pre-arrival email sent out. With respect to the courtyard not being private, you will see from all our very positive reviews that it is, except for our neighbour who does share the gate with us when they are staying there (which is rare) and who are both dog lovers. That obviously doesn’t excuse the dog mess that must have been left by the previous guests and not cleared up by the management team - I have since addressed this with them together with the lack of cleanliness, unusable condiments and they have apologized, as do we. The courtyard is secure, albeit the gate is latched not locked, my previous comment was that we just ask that dogs aren’t left unsupervised in either the cottage or the courtyard. We do reserve the right to charge for extra rubbish but haven’t had the need to so far, as you have said, there are large bins right next to the car park which is just a 5 min walk, along the seafront, which you will need to use if you are unable to secure a space directly in front of the cottage. We are however so pleased that you too enjoyed the new wood burner, that together with all new storage heaters and windows has ensured that the cottage remains nice and warm and cosy - we love our Winter stays there now even more! • "We had a lovely short break at Penhale cottage."

Very cosy and comfortable, clear instructions and a fabulous wood burner that we now have to buy for our own home! Thank you for a wonderful stay.

We love our wood burners and are really pleased that investing in a new one in our holiday home has given our guests a more cosy enjoyable stay too. Thank you for your wonderful review. Michaela Property Owner

  • "Lovely cosy little cottage in the perfect location."

We had a great stay with our 2 border collies in December. The beach is literally a 5 minute walk away, and a perfect base for exploring the coastal paths. The little log burner was a welcome addition as it was exceptionally cold and we really appreciated that the cottage had been decorated for Christmas which we didn’t expect. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Thank you for giving us such great feedback - Penhale is enjoyed by both those with dogs and without, but our 2 Springer Spaniels love their stays in Marazion and can't wait for their morning runs on the expanse of beach that is just at the end of the road. The wood burner had just been replaced before your stay, so really pleased it has enhanced everyones Winter experience. Hopefully we will get the opportunity to welcome you back again soon. • "Hello, we can’t praise this beautiful cottage highly enough."

It was as described, clean, well equipped and beautifully furnished. We honestly found nothing to complain about, a home from home. We enjoyed spending time in the cottage as much as exploring the surrounding area. We enjoyed our stay so much that we have already booked for next year.

  • "Beautiful and well presented cottage, bed and bedding extremely comfortable!"

Ideally situated within Marazion and a short stroll to various places to eat and drink. We tried The Godolphin and Cutty Sark @ Marazion Hotel, both excellent. There's a few little gift and craft shops to browse within the village also. We didn't manage to get parked at the Cottage until the last evening but it really didn't matter as the beach car park is less than 5 mins walk away and we bought a weeks pass for £50. Morrisons was close by and at less than a 5 minute drive away in Long Rock, it was ideal for a quick shop or to pick up essentials on your way out for the day. Highly recommended and would definitely return!

It is perfectly equipped for a fabulous stay and in the most convenient position just a stroll down to the beach. My dog Percy was so relaxed and he couldn’t wait to get out to explore the beach every morning! We will definitely be re booking for another stay!

  • "Just home from a fabulous week at this cottage."

The owners have catered for every need and the cottage is perfectly situated in the stunning picturesque village of Marazion. The cottage was warm and cosy and we felt immediately at home along with our 2 cocker spaniels. The garden gate is shared but the neighbours are friendly and we had no issues. We parked by the front door to unload and then bought a weeks ticket from the car park which was a couple of minutes walk away. We have recommended this cottage to family and will be booking again for next year !

Thank you for your lovely review. We usually buy a weeks ticket when we stay at Penhale too, which is £50. It is a bonus if we can park directly outside the cottage but as we have mentioned before, we thoroughly enjoy the 5 min walks along the seafront to and from the car where the views over to St Michael's Mount remind us of our fantastic location. We would love the opportunity to welcome you back to Penhale again next year! Michaela Property Owner

  • "The stay at Penhale Cottage was exactly what we both needed."

My wife and I took our two dogs (German Shepherd and Lurcher). As had been outlined in the advert prior to booking that parking nearby can be a challenge, given there is no allocated parking. We were fortunate for 3 out of our 4 days and parked outside, but that is predominantly due to the time of year of booking. The cottage itself was lovely. I do not have any fundamental negative feedback to provide. The only thing I would say, is that I was constantly putting coal or logs onto the log burner fire, but without feeling the benefit of the heat, which I found bizarre. Recommendations I would suggest for future clients are as follows: 1. Turn on water heating on the morning prior to the guests arrival, as we had to wait hours until we could have a hot shower. 2. The courtyard is fit for fresh air but not for exercise for your dogs. It is very small. Notwithstanding all of the above, we would be delighted to stay at the cottage again in the future. Thank you so much, you've allowed us to create some wonderful memories.

We love to hear it when our guests have made some wonderful memories whilst staying in Penhale. The cottage is heated with modern electric storage heaters which can give instant heat if need be, so we tend to only use the wood burner for a bit of additional heat and ambience, so haven't ever found it lacking, apologies that you did. The hot water should have been turned on before your arrival, albeit we do recomend that you double check it has been done on your arrival. Apologies if this impacted your first impressions but glad to hear you would be delighted to return and we hope you do, very soon. Thank you. Michaela Property Owner

Thank you for your review, we love how close Penhale is to the beach and if parking directly in front of the cottage isn't available, how the 5 minute walks along the seafront to the car park admiring the views to St Michael's Mount reminds us of what a fantastic location we are in. • "Lovely cottage."

Very comfortable in a great situation. Had great time. A few comments. Very poor flow from shower Fridge door kept sticking, difficult to close. Parking outside a nightmare. Local van owner parking in front of cottage. We parked in public car park but cost an extra £50.

Lovely to hear you had a great time, thank you for your feedback. If the spaces in front of the cottage are taken, we buy a weeks ticket (£50) to park in the car park too, but then find we really enjoy the 5 min walk along the sea front. The shower is a spacious walk in cubicle, mains pressure fed and provides a lovely enclosed relaxing hot shower but we agree, it’s not a power shower yet, watch this space! And regards the fridge door, that has been frustratingly tight this year, given it’s a brand new kitchen we hoped it would settle down, but it is being altered this week. Pleased you found the cottage very comfortable and enjoyed its location, hope to welcome you back again soon. Property Owner

  • "This was an excellently appointed cottage with everything we needed and more."

It was a pleasant surprise to find that there was a Smart TV so we could log on to our streaming accounts for late night viewing. Everything in the owner's guide was clear and helpful. The useful tip to purchase a weekly parking ticket at the car park down the road is a good one as the parking outside is limited. Very good position for getting places and the local eateries offer good food and service. Would definitely stay here again if we're in this part of the world.

Thank you for your lovely review, so pleased you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Michaela Property Owner

  • "Excellent location, a few minutes walk from beach/ pubs/ restaurants/shops etc."

Marazion is very quaint, clean and friendly. The cottage is spacious and a home from home for a couple with 2 dogs. Very clean and bright inside. Lovely furnishings, including a v comfy bed with crisp cotton bedding. Michaella, our host, provided thoughtful extras on arrival such as tea /coffee/milk and even a cold bottle of champagne! Worth noting that although the back garden/patio area is secure and dog friendly there is shared access with the attached cottage to the side gate so dogs can access either garden area if unsupervised. This was not a problem for us as the owners next door are also dog lovers and lovely people. We would thoroughly recommend this cottage and hope to return.

  • "Unfortunately the cottage was not as expected from the description."

Which was sad as the cottage was lovely for the right people and small dog not large dog(S). The plus side was we got to see our daughter, Son-in-law and granddaughter who live in Helston. The cottage itself was a fisherman's cottage as described, but there is no mention of ceilings in the downstairs of the house being so low which caused an issue for my husband who being 6'2". The property is pet friendly and two well behaved dogs are accepted, We have 2 doberman's so as these are not small dogs and due to booking in the summer months dogs are not allowed on many of the beaches between 10am and 6pm, especially Marazion. It was difficult to find walks for them that where not in the sun, or which attracted horse flies. The court yard was quite small and was not private and was not fully enclosed. The garden was gated but the courtyard was actually seperate from full garden and the outer gate serviced both Penhale and adjoining cottage and courtyard, this cottage used this as the main way in. The dogs would obviously bark, despite being supervised at all times. This wouldn’t be ideal for anyone in the other property having dogs or being afraid of dogs. The kitchen despite having enough utensils pot, pans and herbs it was very limited with space. It only had an undercounter fridge and has 1 shelf freezer, the cupboard door of this integral fridge is extremely stiff and hard to close, hence in heat we have been having, food quickly goes off or freezer shelf melts as door is not correctly closed. Then all other food must be stored on 3 available shelves on a trolley and in a vegetable and egg baskets, encouraging flies and looking very unsightly. I normally take cleaning products with me but on this occasion, I had forgotten, I have found in previous properties items have been left or limited clean items are there for you to do a general tidy, in this instance there was no cleaning solutions to even clean tops when cooking. Then nothing even to clean bath, toilet or shower if you needed to and unfortunately the shower water pressure was extremely low.

I was very disappointed to read your review, especially given your full mark score for comfort and the other lovely reviews we have received to date. My husband is also 6’ 2” and has no problems with the ceiling heights, just has to duck through the door ways which at his height he is very used to. We have 2 Springer Spaniels who love staying at Penhale in Summer months, especially their long runs on the extensive sandy beach less than a couple of mins walk away at the end of the road before 10am and after 6pm when the temperatures are cooler for them. As one of our other guests have commented, our neighbors are dog lovers and are rarely there. We do ask that dogs aren’t left unsupervised on the property anyhow and this would include the enclosed courtyard. There are indeed dog restrictions on a lot of beaches across Cornwall at this time of year but if you don’t mind a short drive there is a beach at longrock with parking which is a 5min drive from Marazion or 30 min walk. The lovely Prussia Cove is a 12 min drive and Porthkidney Sands a 20 min drive, both of which have no restrictions at time of writing. The country cottage kitchen is all newly fitted and was designed for its compactness, admittedly not for storage of a whole weeks shopping at once albeit a great kitchen to cook in. When we stay we occasionally eat out at lunch time and spend the odd evening at a local restaurant and with a great choice of supermarkets just 5 mins down the road, buy everything fresh every few days, for when we cook at home. The walk in shower could admittedly have better pressure but it does pretty much have an endless supply of lovely hot water and there is the added advantage of a bath in the bathroom too. I hope that you found time whilst staying in Penhale to explore and enjoy the amazing area surrounding Marazion, given it’s close proximity to lots of famous Cornish towns and coves. Property Owner
