  • "The cottage is beautiful."

It is very clean and cosy. The owner phoned us during our stay to check if we were ok and if we needed anything. This is a home from home and we will be back for sure!

  • "Broken wall and patchy front door was not a good first impression."

Spotted some cobwebs in the porch and junk mail left on side. We opted to sleep downstairs - closer to toilet. Light sensor very sensitive so had to close bedroom door. Over Christmas too few fire lighters and local store was shut. Pressed logs didn’t burn well but we managed to light it the first night to heat up stove. Appliances etc are good quality and all worked. A lovely welcome pack . Well appointed and even though by roundabout we didn’t notice. Not a place if you are not good with steps. Garden access is steep but rails helped. Great for the Finnygook inn! Easy reach to the beach or coast walk.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback. We are sorry about the broken wall, this has now been fixed and the driveway has been made slightly bigger, allowing easier access. We apologise for the logs, we tried something new and this didn't work, so we won't be using the pressed logs again. During the winter season, we provide a complimentary starter pack of firelighters and logs, which is enough to get guests started. Extra logs can be purchased from the local store or nearby garages or supermarkets. The steps up into the garden are mentioned on the website. We would ask guests to call the letting agency prior to confirming a booking, if you should have any questions or concerns. The Finnygook Inn is a lovely place if you want a nice meal. We do hope that you had an enjoyable Christmas and we are glad that you enjoyed the beach and some coastal walks. Property Owner

  • "We all had a great time in your wonderfully appointed cottage."

Whitsand beach must be the most deserted in Cornwall and the cliff top cafe has excellent food. We have to return to this wonderful base for exploration. I hadn't realised how entertaining it can be to wash up overlooking a roundabout!

  • "Thank you for a lovely stay."

The cottage was comfortable and very well equipped. Great dinner at Finnygook Inn and lovely local beaches. We also enjoyed the sun in the garden and the views.

  • "Lovely stay here at Hillside Cottage with our three little dogs."

Cottage is very comfortable and relaxing. The garden is lovely with beautiful views. The stairgate is a very good idea, however would recommend one that reaches the floor, as our 3 little ones just slithered under it! Would definitely come again, as very central. Beaches just a 15 minute walk and the Finnygook pub has excellent service and delicious food. Thank you.

  • "Interesting Cottage Comfortable and well equiped Very steep back garden with damaged fence ."

Only one parking space which takes a bit of getting into. I'd stay there again.

We’re pleased to hear you found your stay at Hillside comfortable. The garden work has now been completed which includes new fence panelling and side gate so the garden is now dog secure. We hope to welcome you back again soon. Property Owner

  • "We had a wonderful time at Hillside."

The property was very welcoming, warm and had a cosy feel to it. The location of the property was fantastic with some lovely walks just around the corner. Also a fab pub just down the road was nice to come back to after a long walk. The garden was very nice too and good facilities for a fire pit and BBQ, with some great views of the estuary. 10/10 would definitely recommend a stay here.

We’re so glad you enjoyed your stay at Hillside and got to explore the local area and amenities. The location is spoilt for choice with great walks but we have to agree, the local pub is well worth a visit! Property Owner

  • "Stayed in this cottage the first week of the Easter hols and know the area well but have never stayed in Crafthole."

What a lovely little cottage (quirky as all cottages are!) we loved it. The garden is set on 2 tiers but totally accessible. The fire made our stay cosy and inviting. Everything we needed as a family of 4 (2 teenagers and a dog) I hasten to add my son was very happy as the ceilings were high enough for him and he is 6ft 4 so finding cottages that are high enough can be difficult. Again, we loved it and will most definitely be back!!!!

Thank you for your kind words and glad you enjoyed your holiday. We’re pleased to hear Hillside was agreeable for all your party. We hope to welcome you back again soon! Property Owner

  • "The property is spacious and comfortable and fitted out to a modern standard."

However, the "central heating" is in fact independent managed radiators which do not give the ease of control that Central Heating offers, which is not convenient for winter lets. The shower curtain was filthy, as highlighted by the previous client and clearly no inspection of this has been made.

Thank you for your feedback. As mentioned, the property has independently managed radiators which are set to a temperature between 18-20 degrees with full instructions on hand. In winter the log burner is often in use and so we have found it beneficial to be able to control each of the rooms temperature individually. We are surprised to hear your feedback regarding the shower curtain. Following previous feedback, before your arrival a brand new one was installed. This has been noted as an inspection point and is now regularly monitored. We are fortunate to have brilliant maintenance help at hand and urge our guests to reach out and let us know if there is anything you need help with. Had you of notified the team of anything during your stay they would have been happy to help. Property Owner

Received text to say no complimentary wood /fire pack.Arrived 3 pm to cold /damp cottage heaters on low setting(outside temp 5 c.)managed to raise temp on heaters after 1 hr. Smelled Damp.Kitchen grimy overall, washed all utensils/crockery/oven before use.Pet hair in freezer/on furniture/in bathroom.Shower curtain filthy with black grime/no power in/water pressure in shower.Vac full of pet hair smelly and filter blocked(useless).Wall behind sofa damp and paint coming off, used coats on sofas to avoid contact(pet hairs).Upstairs bedroom too cold to use(Rad near bath not working)smelled damp. Also no clothes hanging available. No curtains or blinds in kitchen or small lounge window(privacy).Guttering blocked and heavy rain resulted in sleepless night due to water over flowing and bouncing off of plastic drain cover.Latest Gadgets in kitchen,+ 3 x T.Vs not neccessary!! Needs a good clean and decent warmth(heating) We are bemused by 'favourable reviews' and comments in Guest Book.We would not return or recommend as you can probably guess! We felt that in order to stay we could rectify most faults without the intrusion of a maintenance visit as supposed to be a break from hassle of current circumstance.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback. We were very surprised to hear your comments, as previous feedback of the cottage has been positive. Had you made either our maintenance man or Cornish Cottage Holidays/Sykes aware of the issues you encountered during your stay, we would have done all we could to rectify them at the time. It was unfortunate that the local shop where we purchase logs, had a late delivery, so they weren’t at the cottage for when you arrived but were dropped off to you later that same day. The guttering has only recently been cleaned but we will arrange for it to be cleaned again, as during stormy, windy weather, twigs and leaves can soon build up. The heating is set to a temperature of between 18 – 20 degrees and there are instructions for the heating left in the cottage, so that guests can adjust the temperature. The walls in the cottage are cob walls and from time to time, a small patch of damp comes through the wall in the living room, this is regularly monitored and dealt with promptly. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our week immensely, the cottage was warm and cosy with the wood burning fire."

The beds extremely comfortable with high quality bedding etc. There was also a dishwasher and washer/dryer which were most useful. We had realised, albeit after we’d booked, that the only loo is downstairs! This would probably deter us from booking again but if this isn’t a problem to you then you will definitely enjoy this charming cottage.

  • "When we arrived we found the cottage to be everything we expected."

It was lovely and clean. There was everything you needed to make your holiday home from home. When we got there, there was scones, jam, clotted cream to have a snack and milk, coffee and tea bags to have a well urned cuppa just what we needed after a long journey from the North East. They only criticism if it is criticism it would have been nice to have a little table just outside the patio windows then you could have had breakfast outside as it is lovely and private there. Overall I would definitely recommend the cottage it is a beautiful cottage in a beautiful village. There is a pub 2 mins walk on one side and a shop 2 mins walk on the other side.

  • "The pictures of the cottage are mostly accurate we assumed that with a picture of a bath and shower room there would be two toilets."

But our fault for not reading the information properly. We had a call prior to our arrival from Paul who manages the property very helpful and nothing seemed like to much trouble. Very nice to have that person you can contact if there were to be any issues We didn’t see any information about a bbq which was a nice surprise. It was nice to have a garden space and great views over the to the river. Although steps were quite steep but our kids were fine with them. Location was super for us walking distance to the beach and a really nice pub and a shop on your doorstep if we had forgotten something. A really well equipped kitchen and dining space. Although not a lot of space for storing non fridge food.. Three TV’s our children really loved that. Great to have Netflix’s Prime and You Tube available. Parking space right outside the door was essential as road are a little tight for cars passing. But that’s part of the charm of Cornwall. We really had a lovely week and would stay here again.

  • "On first impressions the house is beautiful."

Modern fittings, and very clean. Fresh towels given and welcome cakes are a lovely touch. However, due to health concerns, had we have known the bathroom was downstairs we would never have booked. This is not mentioned in the listing. This caused so many issues and we were very disappointed. The bathroom is also a wet room, so any fully dressed person going to the loo after someone has showered is going to get very wet! The main bedroom upstairs doesn't have the clothes storage as mentioned, but a pipe with some coat hangers on. Any other clothing you have just has to stay in your case or on the floor. Instead of having a decent wardrobe/ chest of drawers, or a second loo, is a bath. Maybe a nice touch in winter but it does make the room slightly damp smelling. The garden is lovely, but even though a dog friendly house, is not enclosed. So if you open the door your dog needs to be on a lead in the garden or they can escape over the 2 ft fence onto the main road directly outside. The beach is not paces away as advertised. It is a long walk with no pavement, or a 5 minute drive to the car park, and then a steep decline down to the sand. Again mobility issues stopped that visit which is disappointing because of the description promising something different. We rent cottages and lodges regularly, and are slways greeted with information from the host on the area. On this occasion there was a folder full of instructions and insurances, bit nothing on thr local area, nearest supermarket, takeaways, etc. Local pub opening times would be handy, WiFi passwords, emergency contacts etc. So it took a day just to find all that out. As I said, the house was modern, and clean. But these things all added up to make this a less than enjoyable stay I'm afraid to say.

Thank you for your feedback, I’m sorry your stay wasn’t as enjoyable as we would hope. You were one of our first guests and so we have taken on board all of your comments. We have updated the property description to highlight that the bathroom is on the ground floor and in regard to a wardrobe / chest of drawers in the master bedroom, we will make some adjustments. We have plans to enclose the garden at some point soon and we are also in the process of updating our welcome folder with local information, along with the Wifi password details. We shall be sure to include other nearby beach suggestions, with easier access to the seafront, as we agree that despite it’s beauty, access to Finnygook beach can be steep for some. Property Owner

CRAFTHOLE

Downderry 3.7 miles; Millbrook 4.6 miles; Looe 10.2 miles; Plymouth 17.9 miles

Nestled in southeast Cornwall's Rame Peninsula is the stunning village of Crafthole. This hidden gem can be found in the parish of Sheviock and boasts a country pub, shop, chapel, Post Office, and a village hall. Dating back to the 19th century, this sneaky village was well-known for smuggling rum, using the Portwrinkle harbour to offload the beverage and travelling up the long and steep hill back to Crafthole Methodist Chapel, where the rum would be stored underneath the building. Portwrinkle is a gorgeous coastal village, home to a Grade II listed building, Eglarooze Cliff, sandy beaches, and a large golf course. Also nearby havens worth visiting include the beautiful coastal villages of Millbrook, Downderry, the fun, seaside town of Looe and the thriving city of Plymouth. Antony is a nearby village, boasting popular gardens, museums, boat trips, and walking and cycling opportunities along the cliff tops. Crafthole is a tranquil spot for a quiet break away when exploring the Cornish coast.
