  • "We enjoyed a lovely sunny week at Fuchsia Cottage."

It was clean, well equipped and very cosy. The beautiful cottage garden was a lovely sun trap and has great distant views over the cliffs out to the sea. Parking is tight but we managed to park fairly close to the cottage every day without any problems. However I wouldn't recommend to anyone with mobility issues as the road is steep and you can never park immediately outside the cottage because it is too narrow there. This is a great traditional old cottage in a peaceful part of Boscastle away from the main hustle and bustle. Great if you love peace and quiet and brilliant for walking or just taking in the stunning views. Loved it. Thank you!

  • "Positive: Clean, well equipped, pretty cottage in ideal location, we had no problems with parking."

Negatives: 1) EXTREMELY uncomfortable mattress on double bed due to the fact it is clearly old, of very poor quality with springs digging into us. The duvet and pillows were also uncomfortable, poor quality, thick and heavy. As a result we did not have a good nights sleep for the whole week. Please note this is not the first review to have mentioned this. Surely providing a comfortable bed is the top priority for holiday accommodation and it would be worth investing in new, good quality mattress and bedding. 2) The shower was very poor and ineffective as water dribbled rather than sprayed out of the shower head. Again a small investment in a 'modern' electric shower would be worthwhile and it may also save the owners money in the long run - we had daily baths instead.

Parking not a problem. Negatives - Sadly the cleanliness, particularly the rug in the lounge, left something to be desired and the bed was very uncomfortable (the double). Positives- perfect location close to a good local pub. Good space for a small cottage and everything you need is there. Garden, lovely for sitting out and great views.

Thank you for your feedback. We realise that the mattress in the main bedroom seems to be an on going subject for complaint which we have previously discussed with Helpful Holidays. It is a firm mattress and may be not to everyone's liking. We stayed for a week at the cottage in October with friends and we felt no discomfort with any of the mattresses in either of the bedrooms. We therefore do not consider that any of the mattresses need to be replaced. In regard to the rug we will ask our caretaker to make sure that it is given a thorough clean. Property Owner

A special highlight is the beautiful little garden overlooking the sea. The house is about a kilometer above Boscastle Harbor and is therefore pleasantly quiet away from the hustle and bustle there. There are some great hiking opportunities directly from the house. The parking situation right next to the house is a bit difficult, but if you know your way around, you can always find a parking space nearby. There is also a great pub and a small shop in the immediate vicinity, so you can also leave the car at home.

Even in June, when the five adjacent cottages were empty, 3 of which also have no parking, there are at best only a few small nearby on-road spots to park. Larger cars would have little chance of parking in high season. The cottage’s location was fine for us but it is not a short walk to the harbour; it is over half a mile steeply downhill, and about a 20 minutes steep uphill return. The harbour is the location of the nearest public car park. The cottage garden has a genuinely wonderful view over Boscastle and out to sea, and was a great place to sit and eat. The cottage is very well equipped and we found it very comfortable. It is dog friendly, and our’s was quite happy in the garden even without a grass area.

  • "On the plus side, the caretaker was very responsive to issues raised, but a leak from the ceiling took priority over any other problems we encountered."

The cottage is really cosy, but much smaller than the photographs portray. The downstairs of the accommodation is one room. The standard of cleaning was poor. Hairs found in the bathroom and previous guests underwear in both wardrobes. The shower curtain was quite mouldy but was replaced when reported. There was a full ashtray left on the window ledge just outside the back door. All in all the standard wasn't brilliant, a bit more attention to detail when cleaning required. Parking was an issue, found a spot some distance away then daren't move my car all week. We had a lovely holiday and the views from the cottage were lovely, but was the cottage worth the price paid? No. Would we return to this cottage? No.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the feedback on your recent stay at Fuchsia Cottage. We were sorry to hear there was a leak during your stay, having spoken to the owner we understand this was rectified on the same day. The property description states the downstairs is an open plan. We are sorry you encountered some cleanliness issues, again we have discussed this with the owner who has brought this to the attention of the housekeeper who will ensure this will not happen again. Had we been notified of these issues during your stay we would have been more than happy to have the housekeeper return to resolve these issues for you. The property itself smelt of damp, central heating has a mind of its own, sometimes coming on in the middle of the night, despite following the instructions in the guide. The mattress in the double bedroom is not fit for purpose and was probably the worst mattress I have ever slept on, quilt was poor quality with no extra blankets to get some heat, cooking facilities were fine as was the seating area although the living space is very small. We had a heavy storm and the porch appeared to be leaking with coats and shoes getting wet through the night. This property could do with a bit of tlc as we paid a high price for a property that wasn’t up to standard, very disappointed with the overal experience

Thank you for your feedback. Fuchsia Cottage is advertised with 'on street parking' which does not guarantee an allocated space or the distance from that space to the property itself. Our Reservations team are always happy to help with any additional queries prior to booking. We have spoken with the owner and he has confirmed that the heating can be switched off quite easily if required. The mattress is fairly new and there are extra blankets available at the property. All guests are provided with the caretaker's number who would have been happy to assist with the leak (and any other queries you might have had) during your stay. Property Owner

80 metres down the steep road is the Napoleon Inn which I would highly recommend for food and hospitality. We were able to park on a triangular island opposite the cottage although it is probably an issue in high season but we had no problems. Boscastle is a charming harbour village with stunning views and scenery and is very popular with walkers and tourists. The Cobweb Inn is a must if you like a good atmosphere and their food is amazing. The cottage is very cosy but spacious and it really was a home from home and we will definitely be going back. From being regular visitors to Spain for the last 20 years this part of Cornwall has been a joy to discover and it has certainly widened our options for the future. The views from the garden were stunning, the cottage itself was lovely and well equipped. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Parking could've been extremely problematic as the 'on street parking' barely existed, you certainly couldn't park outside the cottage. I was travelling with my elderly mother so had to block the road to unload our cases and then go off and find parking. I was extremely lucky to find parking every day about 150 meters away. We stayed during off peak times so during peak times you would struggle to find any parking at all. The location isn't suitable for anyone with limited mobility. The double bed wasn't very comfortable. Apart from the negatives, our stay at fuscia cottage was wonderful. Boscastle itself is nice and there are short drives to the most spectacular cliff top views. There is a pub serving good food with live entertainment within 100 metres of the cottage.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback and we are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay at Fuchsia Cottage. If you have mobility issues (which we don't) it is better to drive. The parking is down to pot luck. The duvets have seen better days. The log burner didn't work. • "Although we enjoyed our stay in Fuchsia Cottage we feel that there are couple of items in the description that need editing."

Firstly to say that you should be able to park ‘around the grass triangle or along the cottage’s garden wall’ is inaccurate. Fuchsia Cottage sits on the narrow and steep Old High Street and to park anywhere near the cottage is impossible. We managed it once in 10 days, fortunately the afternoon before we left, which was useful when it came to loading up the car. We were actually asked by one of the locals to put something in the visitor’s book about the parking! As we were not newcomers to Boscastle, we were able to find parking on Doctor’s Hill (Tintagel Road) at the back of the Boscastle House B&B. Anyone visiting Boscastle for the first time would surely have found parking their car very stressful. The description also states that it is a ‘short walk to the harbour and shops’. The walk is not long but not short either. Those that know Boscastle, will be aware that the walk down to town ( whichever route you take) is very steep and quite a ‘climb’ back up! For anyone with mobility issues, this would prove difficult, possibly impossible and needs pointing out. I found the double bed incredibly uncomfortable and as a result my already dodgy back ‘went’. I spent a week trying to cope with low chairs , steps and lose paving. Fortunately after seeing an osteopath, I was able to enjoy more walking etc at the end of the 10 days. It was unfortunate and not something I’d anticipated when booking the cottage. We both had issues with the shower over the bath. No matter how hard we tried, more water came out of the tap than the shower! We found the key collection times confusing as the blurb states entry from 15:00 but that the key safe was available from 17:00. I am not sure whether this is due to Covid 19 but we were left unsure and arrived at 16:45 having driven round for three circuits trying to find somewhere close enough to unload the car. Fuchsia Cottage is charming and enjoys views to the coast from the garden, main bedroom and bathroom. Generally it is well equipped and we found everything that we needed. Possibly some of the food items I.e packets of biscuits, opened mustard and frozen items left by previous residents should have been removed? I think in the light of the current pandemic, it would also have been useful to have hand sanitiser provided. We had taken our own and also cleaning materials fortunately. In spite of our comments we did enjoy our stay in Fuchsia Cottage but were grateful that we had some local knowledge!

Thank you for your feedback, we're glad you enjoyed your stay at Fuchsia Cottage. On our website, we say that the parking at the cottage is on-street parking with loading/unloading only immediately outside. Parking near the property is subject to availability, with certain times of year being busier than others. In our description we state the following - 'This dear little 18th century, semi-detached cottage sits at the top of the famous Cornish village of Boscastle, where two rivers meet the sea in a natural harbour between steep moorland hillsides. The mattress is an orthopaedic mattress which was only purchased six months ago. The owners have arranged a plumber to replace the shower unit. We apologise for the confusion over the Check-in time, which due to the additional Covid-19 cleaning requirements had to be changed from 3pm to 5pm. The owner has spoken with the housekeeper with regards to removing any food items left by previous guests and has confirmed that fogging is carried out at the property during each changeover. I fear to think what it is like in high season. Because of the extreme narrowness of the roadway, it is impossible to park outside, even to unload/load luggage, in the upper part of High Street or Paradise Road, and the nearest (occasionally) available spaces even for a small car (Nissan Note) are 150 yards away at the far end of Mount Pleasant where it is there necessary to park with one side of the vehicle crushed against the hedgerow/wall. Fuchsia Cottage, sadly had many issues, and the price was not reflected in the quality of the property.I will list all the things that failed to meet our expectations. 1. Windows inside and out dirty. 2.Damp to the front wall of the property, visible on the inside walls leaving the cottage smelling damp and musty. 3. Freezer compartment so frosted up that the little door wouldn't shut.( we spoke to Steve the caretaker, informing him we would leave the fridge open to defrost on the morning of our departure.) 4. Sofa is uneven and uncomfortable to sit on with springs sticking into you. 5. information box with local attraction leaflets,as mentioned in the cottage folder was missing. 6. Not enough pegs and the springs were all rusty. 7. No indoor airing rack to hang up wet clothes/towels. 8. wooden ground floor was hoovered but filthy. We dropped some food on the floor, and when I wiped it up with a wet kitchen towel was shocked at how black it was. 9.Bathroom windowsill tiles have gaps in the grouting, water ingress is unavoidable as the shower curtain does not fit that far. 8. The front gutter is blocked and the down pipe disconnected. Water just poured off the roof in front of the double bedroom window to the ground when it rained. This did not detract from our stay, but obviously needs addressing. The property in general is very pretty but is tired looking. It craves a little TLC. We would like to add that Steve the caretaker was very nice and replaced the leaking shower hose as soon as we reported it to him.

  • "Had an issue with smell of urine in double bedroom - this was resolved the next day once reported, caretaker/cleaner helpful, cleaned mattress and able to remove carpet stains ( case COR-70609-CF tried to e mail a feedback form but unable to do so " Sorry page not found")."

The cottage fitted the description and was in a very good location. Apart from the unpleasant smell, the sofas were very uncomfortable and the rug downstairs small and grubby with newspaper underneath. There were visible stains on the upstairs fitted carpet in several places including the bedrooms. Heating and apliances good. Garden could have been lovely but was spoilt by lack of maintenance, straggly shrubs, foxy smells and generally needing an overhaul.

  • "The patio provided a great, relatively private space where we were able to enjoy breakfast, given the weather."

The property was clean and well-equipped. Although an end of terrace property the thick walls meant that we heard nothing from our immediate neighbours. The locals all seemed very friendly. It was a good base for coastal walks. Whilst it was not possible to park outside the property, we were able to find parking in the surrounding streets.

  • "The sofas could do with being replaced, otherwise the cottage is pretty much perfect!"

The cottage was well equipped and clean and comfortable. The location was perfect. We met the caretaker steve a very nice chap and helpful with food recomendations and things. We have used you before and will continue to do so. A great holiday

  • "The cottage provided us with easy access to centre of Boscastle and also the coastal path but at the same time was quietly tucked away so we were able to 'retreat' when we wanted to."

During sunny periods the garden was a real bonus.
