  • "Very disappointed."

When we arrived we parked as directed down the side of the garage to unload our car.The cottage is difficult to find and down a long path which gets slippery in wet weather. We moved our car to go into StAgnes for a meal .On our return we were amazed to find a bollard placed in the centre of the parking space we had used.We realised that this was not the dedicated parking space but even so felt watched and unwelcome for the remainder of our stay.On first view the impression is of a spacious, well equipped property.Look more closely and we became aware of food stains on the sofa and general dirt and dust throughout.Someone needs to seriously address the mould growing in the downstairs shower, both on the grouting and at the bottom of the door. The handle on the toilet was also wobbly and in danger of falling off.Chips on the kitchen doors speak of the very hard life this cottage has.Whilst the en suite upstairs looks modern I found the lack of a door meant that there was no privacy when using the facilities. The television was tempremental, although Sykes did respond quickly to our asking for help over this issue.Kitchen not spacious.A confining narrow galley shape. On a positive note, the bedding and towels were fresh and clean. The complimentry cream tea was also a nice touch.Howy I cannot recommend this property.

  • "The cottage was filthy garden overgrown and garden furniture rusty and neglected, inside things did not improve everything stank of wet dog , underneath sofa full of dog hairs , no floors had been brushed or clean upstairs same dirty floors smelly carpets , got travel cot out for my grandson loads of dust and hair came out with it , a child had obviously used it and had a accident it smelled badly of urine ."

My holiday was ruined by these issues as did not feel comfortable at all . Only positives bed linen and towels where clean as was fridge which looked new . Also please note cottage is not suitable for anyone who is bigger than 5ft 6 , I am only 5ft 3 and was constantly banging my head . I would like to give a special mention to the photographer who made this place look good he is quite the talent . Got an email day before leaving asking to leave cottage as we found it unfortunately I couldn’t find a big wet dog to rub over anything or a bin bag of dog hair needless to say I won’t book with Sykes again after previously having positive experiences.

Thank you for taking the time to send in your feedback. We are sorry to hear you encountered some issues during your stay. Had you made us aware of any issues at the time, we would have done all we could to rectify things during your stay. It does state in the summary section of the website that there are low beams and doorways in the property, with some measurements also provided. Property Owner

  • "We really enjoyed staying in Polkimbra Goonown and thought the cottage was beautiful and grateful for the enclosed garden as we have a small dog that could run around in it safely."

It was lovely and warm in the cottage and great to have under floor heating. The only thing we would mention is the noise from the immersion heater in the main bedroom was quite loud and therefore we moved to the twin room as it kept waking us up. Otherwise beds very comfortable and slept very well. We would visit again.

  • "A really lovely, characterful cottage with a nice secure garden for the dog."

Nice touch to have scones, jam and cream waiting for us on our arrival, as well as fresh flowers. Bed comfortable, and the location is very peaceful. It was a shame there weren’t any logs or kindling for the log burner - perhaps this could be considered in future, especially for autumn/winter lets, even if it’s at extra cost? Other cottages we’ve stayed in have provided at least a few to start off with. However, a much more frustrating issue was the lack of hot water for anything other than an electric shower, which I believe has already been pointed out by a previous guest. There appears to be hot water installed, but it didn’t work for the duration of our stay. Also, from day one there appeared to be a blockage in the kitchen sink as the water drained away very slowly. Information about where to put rubbish or what to do with bedding was lacking; we had to contact Sykes about this. Quite a lot of the pots/cutlery/crockery wasn’t completely clean. That said, we both agreed that this was one of the nicest cottages we’ve stayed in and only the lack of hot water would prevent us from returning soon.

Thank you for your feedback which we always welcome. We are sorry that you did not have the welcome pack of logs and kindling which should have been left for you. The issues with the hot water have now been rectified. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the scones, cream and jam. Property Owner

  • "As seasoned travellers we have booked holiday cottages through numerous agencies and are accustomed to clever photography and skilled descriptions, both of these have been taken to new levels on this property."

Locating the property is not easy, as no number is visible from the street. Having located the entrance one has to find a parking on the narrow, busy street, which can be some distance from the entrance path, the path is an appreciable distance from the road to the cottage,( especially when carrying luggage), then one is greeted by a poorly maintained property. Some of the issues that we immediately encountered included a very grubby interior, dirty carpets, dirty couch and cushions (used tissues found under the couch amongst other mess), old food matter found in drawers and cupboards, splashings of fat on the stove, dirty dish clothes, grimy cutlery and crockery, dirty freezer shelving, an uncleaned fire place, numerous spiders webs. When we attempted to clean up, the hover produced more dust that it removed. Some of the more serious issues that we encountered were the cottage is a veritable rabbit warren of low beams, ceilings, and doorways of differing heights, the main bath room has a sloping ceiling that is very low on one side, the down stairs shower also has low ceilings and beams that made standing difficult in either, the dining area is very low, the kitchen area is so narrow the dishwasher door does not open fully, the bath is extremely small and had no hot water, this was only repaired after two days of visits from an electrician. We spent the entire stay with a blocked kitchen sink, and on pulling back the duvet on the main bed we discovered a pile of linen. The linen that had been fitted had a lot of hair on it. The many staff that we spoke to and communicated with at Sykescottages where always extremely friendly and cordial. We gave various options to resolve this, which included relocating us , we made many calls and sent numerous messages.

  • "Really lovely comfortable cottage."

Underfloor heating was a real bonus and the dogs loved it as much as we did. Very comfortable beds. Well stocked kitchen, cosy sitting room and totally enclosed garden so we could let dogs out without worrying they’d run off. Very peaceful location and close to great dog friendly bars. Short drive to nearest beaches. All in all great place to stay.

  • "Property misleading listed garden cannot be seen from road long lane to access property not disabled friendly and difficult to decamp even for someone who is fully mobile."

No hot water upstairs and no hot water in kitchen which required kettles to wash dishes. Steep stairs not listed in description. Insufficient lighting in dining room.

Thank you for your feedback, as mentioned prior, access to the property is via a pedestrian foot path from the road. We can confirm that there is a water pump being installed to improve the water pressure. The stairs are not particularly steep, but as expected in an old Cornish cottage. We would always recommend you checking with us with any mobility issue concerns, prior to booking. Property Owner
