  • "The cottage is well equipped, impeccably clean, cosy after an hour's heating, and spacious."

It has great character, which is what I want from a holiday cottage, but it does come with quirks. There is a modern kitchen and a light, airy dining room in the rear extension. The bathroom provision, downstairs, is generous. The living room comprises the whole ground floor of the original cottage, but the ceiling is low - about 1.7 metres I'd guess; lower than the top of my head, at any rate. The front door and the door to the rear are lower still. I learned to duck. The steep and narrow stairs also demand care. The long reverse to the parking space is a little challenging, but do-able. Much mud on the lane from the car to the front door, and oatmeal carpets inside. Slippers a must. A good size twin bedroom and double bedroom, the latter reached through a single bedroom, which, for me, acted as a dressing room. The bed was comfortable and the location silent. Good sleeps. Good location for attractions in West Cornwall. A pleasant garden in front of the house, and country view to the rear. All in all, highly recommended. Hint for owner - Dyson vacuum cleaner unusable, by me at least. Argos do a simple Bush cleaner for around £50.

  • "We loved this accommodation, it provided the perfect resting place for a fantastic week away."

walking distance to a local shop, a couple of local pubs and the beach (just under 2miles). There have been several comments on here about parking being an issue down the narrow pathway at the side of the property, but we managed to get a Discovery Sport in there fine and, although we could have been asked to move, we never were. Yes, there is a slight musty smell when you first enter (the cottage is over 200 years old!), but the instructions left by the owners clearly asks you to vent the house and it was fine after. Low ceilings, again, it is over 200 years old and my 6ft tall husband coped fine! We are a family of 5 and it was more than comfortable for us…we loved the large dining table, which allowed us to have family meals when we were actually in! The front garden (no back garden) is lovely and fully enclosed…we were able to relax there in the evening sunshine. The only drawback was the lack of Wi-Fi…this may be down to issues with connectivity for such an old property and, normally, would be a welcomed break for us, but our eldest daughter had exams upon our return and everything from school is now online, but we muddled through…this is the only reason we have marked it down slightly. Would definitely come back and highly recommend!

  • "We appreciate the problems of old houses as we lived in a 1760 cottage in Wester Ross however the cottage was extremely musty and clearly had not been aired that day."

Arriving near dark the heating was not on and the cottage cold. The level of cleanliness was poor with cobwebs on blinds, light fittings and in corners, a side table had a thick layer of dust as did the DVD machine - I can offer photographic proof of this. The published description could be a little more accurate, low ceilings is an understatement as no one over 5ft 5 should apply and the parking is very challenging unless you are a confident reverser - which thankfully I am. Pity, as the location is great for exploring the Penzance area, it was well equipped with plentiful crockery and cutlery, pots and pans and it si a picture-book property.

  • "We were very disappointed with the overall cleanliness of the property and spent Saturday evening cleaning cupboards and drawers in the kitchen after finding spiders webs on utensils and in cupboards, then moving on upstairs to have to vacuum webs and spiders from behind beds and under mattresses in child's double room."

All furniture surfaces were dusty. First time I've never unpacked suitcases on a holiday. This property needs a professional deep clean and refresh/updating. Bedding was fine but towels need replacing. Location was fabulous and this property could be beautiful.

  • "We were disappointed with this holiday property."

The Thatched Cottage has so much potential but currently it is looking tired & neglected. Everything is dated, soft furnishings marked, badly repaired (eg curtains). The kitchen worktops were clean but everything else was sticky, greasy, lumps of dusty cobwebs under radiators etc. There is no rear courtyard - it is a pathway to the back gate & storage area for gas cylinders & bins. There is a front garden but it is surrounded by overgrown trees & shrubs. As a consequence the inside of the Cottage is dark, the lighting is ineffective. There are only two chairs with a small table in front garden, not big enough for 5 people. There are green plastic chairs but they are filthy. This Cottage is not suitable for children. The single & twin bedrooms lead straight onto a steep staircase. The bathroom/toilet/shower room are directly off the Utility room, which is off the lounge. Just a shower curtain between the "wet room" shower & utility area. It could look so much better with a little planning. Towels were provided - they were shocking, only suitable for pets!! Only one T-towel. Take a look inside the washing machine door seal - black sludge reminiscent of the Calgon advert on TV. Too many notices everywhere - don't do this, don't do that - just not necessary. There is no BBQ (because of the thatch roof), no WiFi and patchy mobile signal. Parking is a challenge if you have a wide car but is possible with care. That paved walk to the shop? you forgot to mention the hill in between! The Cottage & its location is not suitable for people with limited mobility. We would not recommend this property in the condition it is currently presented.

  • "The car access is quite tricky to this property."

You have to reverse down a very narrow drive. Its not really practical to drive in forwards as it wouldn't be safe to reverse out into the road.Getting into the right position to reverse in means that you are temporarily blocking the road. Although it's a B road the traffic can come along quite quickly at times. The drive is shared access to a field so you have to park right at the bottom of the drive to maintain that access. When we arrived the next door neighbours surreptitiously checked that we were not blocking the gate, albeit it that it didn't appear the gate had been used for some time. The drive is also right of way to a footpath that runs from the rear of the property although we didn't see anyone use it.

It is also in a public right of way, and the info received after booking states that you may be required to move your vehicle if required. Therefore advertising the cottage as having parking I find a bit misleading.

  • "The Thatched cottage is beautiful and is in beautiful surroundings."

When we arrived, we was left a lovely note with a cake. My only problem was the kitchen and utilities weren't clean. Especially with the current covid situation this isn't good enough. I completely understand that it is a very old cottage and with the surroundings cobwebs could happen very quickly, but to open the cupboard and there was cobwebs all over the pans, plus dried up cooked food in the pans isn't really acceptable. Also it maybe because its again a old cottage but the bedding and seating area didn't feel clean. We arrived home and everything had to be washed as it stunk of damp. A little bit of money and re arranging needs to be spent on this cottage, it was like I was sat in my grans 30 years ago. Having all the facilities was great but maybe going through things and getting rid of old stuff that no one needs. Also maybe the rearranging of the upstairs. Having children , the room with the 2 beds should be where the double bed is. I didnt feel comfortable leaving my 8 year old in the bedroom that when the door opened it was right near the stairs, i ended up sleeping with her. That room would be so much better with the double bed. This is a beautiful cottage and just maybe spending a bit of time updating and cleaning would make it wonderful.

  • "The cake on arrival was a promising start, but."

... We did not feel the owners were focused on giving their customers the best experience - from the constant dampness of the building, even with ALL the windows open when we were at home, and it being a mostly lovely sunny week, to the trip hazard rug in the living room, down to not providing any spare toilet rolls, and the ones that were there when we arrived were only half rolls! And the pillows were horrid. There was very little information on the area and things to do. There was little commitment to recycling with outdated information and no bags to separate items for collection We understand in such an old building there are important things to consider, but the focus was definitely on making sure we understood the many rules and not enjoying beautiful Cornwall What a pity and wasted opportunity.

  • "The Thatched Cottage was very quaint and reasonably comfortable."

It was nice to have a pint of milk in the fridge on arrival. We enjoyed the experience of the ambience of the place and its close proximity to the local shop and pubs. I'm sure it will be important to some tall people who may not appreciate the low ceilings! The key safe should really be repositioned elsewhere in order to get to it easier. Otherwise, it was much as expected.

  • "We had a successful holiday, and enjoyed the cottage very much."

We have left positive comments in the visitors book. Coincidentally, we also own an old cottage on Gower, South Wales, which is used for holiday lettings, so we appreciate the idiosyncrasies of these buildings. If we had a criticism it would be that the restricted height in the living room is not really made clear. The description says "Due to age of the property, please be aware of low ceilings and doorways in the original parts of the cottage." I am six feet two inches tall, and had to bend every time I went into the living room, to avoid banging my head on the beams. Several door openings are also very low, as is the staircase which has very restricted headroom indeed. We understand that these characteristics cannot be altered, but felt that they not adequately described by the above description. It is also difficult to get the key out of the key box, which has been located in the outside front store, which is about 4 feet high. You have to get right into the store, before you can get to the key box. There is no light to read the key code. So this has to be done crouching on hands and knees. I am 72 years old and perhaps not as flexible as I used to be, so getting the keys out, and putting them back, proved quite a challenge! This problem can be solved easily! We also thought that the garden could do with clearance and maintenance. The description says "outside you have a pretty cottage garden, where you can sit back with a coffee and plan your day of adventures." It was hard to enjoy as a space because it is very overgrown, and the overhanging vegetation also made the interior of the building darker than it needs to be. We appreciate that it is a very old cottage with small windows, and that is part of its charm, but being very overgrown made it seem just a bit neglected. In windy weather it was quite ghostly and eerie! It is hard to see the building from the road because of the overgrown vegetation, difficult to walk down the front garden path because of overhanging branches, etc. The requirement to reverse the car down the narrow overgrown unlit side alley to the parking place would be too much for some. It is true that there is; "Off-road parking for one car" as stated, but it is not clear that to access this you must reverse 30 metres or so up a narrow single track, with stone "hedges" on both sides. There is no turning space and no room for error. After dark this was particularly difficult to do, but it was not easy in daylight, requiring the manoeuvre to start by turning backwards against oncoming traffic, into a narrow opening off a main road! Creation of a parking space in the front of the cottage, off the road, would be a great benefit, and not difficult or expensive to achieve.
