Understand that the new owners only took over during difficult times last November but the cottage was really not up to standard, they have lots more work to do. The refrigerator needs to be replaced or at the very least defrosted. We bought a litre of ice cream to enjoy through the week but alas had to scrape a mountain of ice away from the freezer compartment before we could fit it in. The cooker we never used because it was all rusted at the front and would not dare cook on it. The crockery had mostly large chips out of it. The plastic handled cutlery was rusty at the joints, the blades on the knives fell off when used. The tea and coffee mugs were not cleaned properly all marked with tea rings. I bleached two of them that we were using and bleached and washed again when we put them away. The rest of the cottage was ok, clean apart from the kitchen area floor. I spilt a little water and mopped it up very soon after we arrived and the kitchen paper was black. Our main concern was the owners dog. It was stated on the cottage information book that we should watch out for there dogs as one of them was funny with other dogs. If you are running a dog friendly accommodation and you have a dog that attacks other dogs the dog in question should be muzzled, or you do not allow dogs. Having said this the owners and staff were very friendly towards our dog and to all the other dogs that were staying on the premises. A very dog friendly pub. Unfortunately in our case our dog became very ill so we had to go home and cut our stay short, but on the evening of the day before departure my husband took our dog outside to take him for his last toilet before we retired for the night and the owner just let his dogs out without checking if there were any other dogs about and as a consequence his dog went for our dog who was already unwell, fortunately did not pierce the skin. It could have been much worse. We did get an apology the next morning when we settled our food and drinks bill, but clearly this state of affairs needs to be looked into. All in all there is much work to be done before the cottage is up too scratch for rental but I am sure the work will be done in due course and we do wish the owners well in their new business venture.

About the location

KILKHAMPTON

Bude 4 miles.

Kilkhampton is an historic Cornish village, 4 miles from the popular Victorian seaside resort of Bude, one of Cornwall’s premier holiday locations. With its old church, village shops and atmospheric village pubs, Kilkhampton is a lovely place to relax after a hard day exploring the stunning beaches and spectacular coastal scenery for which the area is famous. Bude’s beaches attract surfers from all over the country and when conditions are right you’d be hard pushed to find better surf. When the tide is out, miles of golden sand and hundreds of rock pools keep visitors occupied for hours. The South West Coast Path, and many other rights-of-way winding over the clifftops and through lush green fields looking out over the sea, make this area a haven for walkers and lovers of the open countryside. For those who prefer staying closer to home, a good shopping centre and a selection of pubs, two clubs and restaurants are on offer. Bude canal, a registered nature reserve, passes through the town, and rowing a boat along its calm waters or walking the towpath among the beautiful (and friendly) water fowl that live among the reeds is a great way to spend an hour or two. Within the area there are also 2 golf courses, an indoor swimming pool, bowling alley at the leisure centre. A perfect location for all that North Cornwall has to offer.
