  • ""Tom" is fantastic and we love it."

Lighting is a bit quirky and others may think the shower/bath is on the verge of needing refreshing/updating but I don't like things to be too perfect! It is like staying in your own "forever cottage". Double bed is very comfortable and all the rooms are lovely. Can't wait to return. Our hosts Steve and Fiona were brilliant - friendly and helpful. Thank you.

The log burner was a pleasant addition. With the Blisland Inn, a superb country pub with great beers (dogs welcome and almost obligatory) to drop into after walks, our stay at Tom couldn't have been better. Simon, Fiona and Steve were available for any problems without being intrusive. Thank you. We couldn't wish to stay anywhere better and look forward to our next visit.

We had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay, in an absolutely beautiful location. Steve and Fiona, the caretakers, were very friendly and helped with any minor issues we had (like needing more bin bags!). We'll be back!

  • "Shower was not controllable, heating and hot water was difficult to get working and immersion has to be on but there were no instructions for the heating clocks so that’s a pain, it smelt of damp like it had been closed up a while and the kitchen equipment could of been a bit better very limited if you cook!"

It was good but basic internally. Though the position and cottage and grounds were fantastic so the above is constructive points rather than a complaint as such. With some modest changes the level could be raised fairly easily and be too class!

Many thanks for your comments. There was a problem with the shower mixer valve which we have replaced. We have also added some more items to kitchen such as baking tins and new knives. Property Owner

Freshly baked scones on arrival, and we had a warm welcome from Clare who looked after the property. She provided extra towels for our puppy as the weather was very wet during our stay. I would recommend a stay at Tom cottage for anyone looking for a quiet relaxing location in beautiful surroundings.

  • "Tom is spacious and welcoming."

It has a lovely garden, wood burner and plenty of space. Internet was intermittent but we were able access it from the main house so not a huge problem for us. This is being addressed and there is also a refurb planned for the kitchen. Clare is very helpful and was quick to respond. We would happily return if visiting the area again.

  • "We spent a week at Tom, this cottage is in a lovely location, very peaceful."

The children had a great time exploring. The accommodation was comfortable and clean, and made for a relaxing holiday. The central location made accessing both coasts easy (narrow roads). The owner of the main house and caretaker were very friendly and helpful. We got to know the people in the adjoining cottages, which added to the experience.

  • "Firstly you failed to let me know that the property booked and for which you took all the money had been double booked and no apology."

I only found out 10 days before going to Cornwall because I checked up. Then I had to book 2 more cottages for the family which was difficult and no where near the sea. The one called Tom is very tired. The owners are rather mean. It needs a lot of updating, bed linen and carpets, soft furnishings are tatty. The wifi is always falling out and the shower temperature could not be adjusted so we could not have more than 20 sec showers until it was eventually sorted half way through the holiday. The meanness is the fact that 2 toilet rolls and a couple of bin bags were provided only. I’ve never stayed anywhere which shouts “mean”. My adult children stayed at “Sleepy Fox “which was very much nicer and clean and welcoming, Tom has no manuals or guides or anything that makes you welcome.. I lived in N Cornwall and know many areas and rentals but this seems as if the people are just going through the motions of making money on a country Estate that they bought which already had a rental business BUT they have done nothing to update or care for this cottage. It could be very nice but £ 850 is too much for this place. To top it all the caretaker sent me a text asking me to strip iff the beds and put them in black bags as this was due to covid (which it is NOT). She never produced the black bags but I did strip off the beds and put the towels and everything together just o be a good person. I still think it is a cheek. I did ask to have the shower and wifi looked at but we gave up on the wifi in the end. As someone who does AirBnB all the updates could be set against tax so I think the people must not care or be disorganised. They need to bin their duvet covers, duvets and linen- it is Alll abominable. Please let me know if you can help me gain confidence in booking again with you. Regards Clare Luscombe

We are very sorry to hear that you were unhappy with your week in Tom Cottage. Your comments surprised us, since so many of our returning guests are delighted with the improvements we've made to the cottage in the past three years. Responding to some of your points: the WiFi has recently been upgraded, but it bore exceptionally heavy use last week and became unreliable. Now that we know this, we will upgrade the system further. The problem with the shower was unfortunate, but was fixed within 24 hours. Asking guests to strip the bedlinen is certainly not our normal practice, but is required by government regulations resulting from Covid - as is the removal of pamphlets and manuals. The bedlinen is managed by a reputable firm and has been praised by other guests, but we are sorry it was not to your taste. Our friendly caretakers do their utmost to help at all times, and would have been happy to provide anything else you needed. We regret that you didn't enjoy the lovely surroundings, but we appreciate feedback and are taking your comments into consideration. Property Owner

It has a small shop and pub within a 2 minute drive by car. The cottage itself is warm, clean and well equipped. There is a working wood burning stove, which made the cottage feel even more cosy of an evening. When we got there, we were welcomed with scones, jam and clotted cream, a lovely touch. • "We really enjoyed our week at Tom, the cottage is cosy, very comfortable and warm, with an endless supply of logs for the wood burner."

The owners made us feel welcome and showed us the Celtic crosses in their garden and gave us some info about the history of the place, fascinating! The location was perfect, lovely surrounding countryside walks, a short walk away from the village where there is a pub (never made it there) and a very useful community shop stocked with essentials and a post office. My only comment would be that the kitchen is looking a bit tired and could do with some updating, nothing serious, we had everything we needed in terms of equipment and appliances, and the cooker was great, oven worked really well!

Many thanks for your feedback, we are very happy to hear you enjoyed your stay at Tom. We're pleased to say that in the past year, the whole of Tom cottage has been redecorated (including new oven, carpet, fridge and TV etc) and the bathroom has also been renovated. We hope to see you again in the future. Property Owner

  • "General layout was good with plenty of space and in a lovely setting."

However the cottage was damp when we arrived and it took several days for the smell to subside. Part of the kitchen wall was mouldy as were some of the walls in the bathroom. We were particularly disappointed with the poor standard of maintenance in the bathroom, namely: the floor in the vicinity of the wc had structurally failed where the floor depressed alarmingly when stood on, unsightly discolouration of the mastic bath seal, mould on walls, broken blind affording little privacy for a ground floor facility and general deterioration of the window frame. There was no positive air extraction in the bathroom other than opening the window. Elsewhere in the main bedroom there was significant open cracking in the plasterwork, the windows had not been adequately cleaned and appeared to have smears of paint on them. In the kitchen the tiled worktops had stained and missing grout, the oven was not clean. The above reflects the general tired appearance of the property and we noted from the visitors book that we were not alone in thinking this. Similar concerns were raised some two years ago, but no action appears to have been taken. We are surprised that this has not been picked up on through your company's vetting process. Overall we did not feel that this was good value for money and would be reluctant to book with you again.

Many thanks for voicing your grievances regarding this property, unfortunately, due to the size of Sykes’ portfolio of properties, we can't visit every property on a weekly basis. That said, your words have given us cause for concern with our standards at this property and we are now investigating the matters raised. If you wish to discuss or elaborate more on the issues raised, please feel free to contact the Sykes office on the details below, quoting your booking reference number and any other information that may assist us in providing the best possible outcome and customer service. Our lines are open 7 days a week from 9am until 7pm. We're pleased to say that in the 2019, the whole of Tom cottage has been redecorated (including new oven, carpet, fridge and TV etc) and the bathroom has also been renovated. We also discovered and fixed a leaking underground pipe which was the source of the damp problem which damaged the floor in the bathroom. This has also been repaired and the flooring replaced. • "We chose to stay in Tom's cottage near Bodmin."

The cottage was actually far more spacious than the pictures on the website. It was super clean, really well equipped kitchen and lovely and cosy. The quietness was blissful. The caretaker Krysia and her husband were always on hand for any questions we may have and we were greeted with a plate of homemade scones, jam and clotted cream. It was a fabulous stay and we would go back in a heart beat. My two teenage boys and my mum loved it also as everyone had their own space. It was a home from home and we are actually thinking of booking one Christmas.

Picturesque cottage in the grounds of an ancient Cornish manor house, set in a peaceful valley with spectacular mature trees, just outside Blisland village with its famous real-ale pub and Grade-1 listed church.

Tom is an end cottage of the three converted from barns at Lavethan and has plenty of character.

The open plan living space is light and airy, a good place to snuggle up beside the wood burning stove or enjoy family meals cooked in the efficient kitchen.

Head upstairs to bed in the two bedrooms which share a family bathroom and from this level you can head out to one of the lawns.

With the lovely coastline close at hand, this is an excellent place.

About the location

BLISLAND

Bodmin 5.7 miles; Wadebridge 8.4 miles; Polzeath 13.2 miles; Tintagel 13.8 miles; Padstow 16 miles; Fowey 17.2 miles.

Situated under the western edge of granite-bound Bodmin Moor, the village of Blisland retains its age old character and is the only village in Cornwall to have a village green with trees. Around the green, cluster old houses and cottages, as well as the famous, award-winning Blisland Inn. The village is located less than three miles from the A30, and so provides an ideal central location for touring Cornwall. Nearby, Poley’s Bridge marks the beginning of the Camel Trail, a 17-mile long route, which follows a long disused old steam engine railway line to Padstow. The route is completely traffic-free and perfect for walkers and cyclists. You can even explore the trail on horseback and a purpose-built hide has been constructed between Wadebridge and Padstow, so even birdwatchers are catered for! Pull on your walking boots and explore Bodmin Moor, or venture to the coast with your buckets and spades and enjoy a day on one of the many beautiful beaches that stretch along Cornwall’s northern coastline. A fabulous part of the country for all!
