  • "We love the cottage and stayed many times , however the new TV, (bought in jan) which is useful on winter evenings, has the most awful sound speakers i have ever heard on a TV set."

I am sound engineer and frankly this TV/CD player is NOT fit for purpose. We were unable to listen to it, as it is tinny. I know what I am doing with technology and this could not be improved either in personal settings reducing the treble or in the standard setting or any other for that matter. It just has cheap speakers within it. There are far better small tv's out there that don't sound as awful as this. This is why i marked the facilities low. The rest of the cottage is fine. On a positive note Eve was fantastic as always and made us feel very welcome . Nothing is too much for her to make your stay enjoyable.

  • "An absolutely beautiful cottage in the middle of the countryside."

The birds singing each morning are wonderful and there is a pheasant that squarks every now and then. At night we saw two hedgehogs that visit the garden. It was sunny enough for us to eat breakfast and dinner in the garden which was lovely. The cottage inside is cosy with nice furnishings. Only negative things is the shower doesn't work on high, it's either scolding hot or freezing so you have to have a bath every day really unless you can deal with the shower drizzle on medium or low setting. Also kitchen cupboards/tiles/bathroom tiles could do with a wipe down but overall the cleanliness is good. We've been twice now, we love it and will be back again. The fireplace is amazing.

  • "This is a place to sit to hear the soft droning of bees, the songs of blackbird and chiffchaff, the croak of a raven and the bop of a pheasant."

A place to survey the bluebells and primroses that carpet the lawn . The only other sound, the breeze playing through the trees. It’s as if time has gone back 100 years and as I sit outside the cottage door I imagine the view is unchanged. Peace is this place, sitting under the pear tree that reaches up to the thatched roof. A stoat runs across the lawn. A gravel path, a blue wooden gate and stone flags by the house. In the distance , across the peaceful valley, the trees are coming in to leaf; the fields are bright with new growth. All this and, inside, vases have been filled with bluebells and a cake awaits us in a tin.

We arrived late on the Friday so having lovely baked goods, milk, orange juice and a made up fire waiting for us was wonderful. The cottage smelled lovely and all was very clean with lots of extra touches like hand wipes, sanitizer and easy to wash throws on the furniture making it feel covid safe. A lovely cottage steeped in history in beautiful surroundings. A little piece of heaven in this mad world. Thanks to Eva the caretaker for her help and warm welcome.

  • "The cottage did not present well on first appearance, the front door paintwork was dull and peeling in places and on entering the lounge the impression was of a dark, gloomy room with the dark furniture exacerbating the situation."

The kitchen was lacking in storage space for the food items that we brought with us ( bearing in mind the COVID19 rules maye have prevented us eating out) . The heating was by Night Storage radiators and all of these were shabby , with rust spots and worn heating controls and in need of replacement . There was only a small cupboard located between the two bedrooms with hanging space for clothes and felt damp . As already reported we had a problem with mice in the space between the thatched roof and plasterboard ceiling and for the first three nights they were so active and loud and this prevented a good, full night's sleep .....this was dealt with but it needed two phone calls to yourselves to obtain a solution as at first we were told that it coudn't be dealt with until we left on "changeover" day ! We were disappointed that despite opting for a 4 * ( or tick ) rating we encountered these problems and the property did not meet your usual high standards. On a positive note the standard of cleanliness was very good and the caretaker is to be commended for her work in this property ....and her help with the mice problem.

Will I be able to book by phone as I really find it difficult on line and have to rely on neighbours to help using the computer. One down side this year was the telephone there didn't work. Eva the very helpful lady who looks after the cottage so well was aware and had previously requested something should be done but despite her remind request still no phone when we left. On previous visits the phone was fine. With no reliable mobile reception there we had to drive up to Lewdown to make our calls. It's a delightful cottage in just the right place for us.

The cottage is cosy and comfortable, extremely well stocked with everything you could possibly need and you feel relaxed and at home very quickly. We enjoyed sitting in the garden watching the wild life, something different everyday!!! Two things i would point out...being an old cottage the ceilings and doorways are quite low and hubby ended up with a few bumps on his head (he's 6ft 2ins) ....and the path to the cottage is fairly long and an uphill slope which could be a problem to those with limited mobility. Apart from this the cottage is absolutely perfect, has bags of character,in beautiful surroundings and i would definitely stay here again.
