  • "Love this place."

It’s perfect for us as upstairs feels spacious and cosy, the decor makes us happy and the bedrooms downstairs are a nice size and nicely decorated. Good size fridge and freezer, good microwave, kettle, oven and hob. My Son likes to eat on the balcony when the weather permits. Big comfy sofas. The only issue is the shower is a bit tricky to get how we like it, but we’ve been back multiple times and will book in again. It’s the only issue and we love staying there.

The information book is tatty and out of date - some local attractions are well out of date! Although the booking information did warn - it would be useful to update the properties with WIFI - it did make several things difficult. These days, holiday makers do expect access to WIFI I found some of the paths were very uneven - particularly the one turning left towards the car park area with the rubbish area. The light along the path next to the St Ann's terrace wasn't working, which made walking along difficult and finding the key-hole difficult too, luckily, I arrived just early enough to see the key pad to get the key - I hadn't expected to need a torch. The key pad was very difficult to open.

Really spacious accommodation which is decorated in a retro 70s style and parking was easy too. There are a few minor issues that could be taken care of easily: the kitchen door hinges need securing especially under the sink as the door can prevent the fridge door from shutting properly. Also the shaving light needs a new bulb. But I would happily stay again we had a lovely week. Thanks.

The apartment is a lovely open plan accommodation which was clean and well presented. Beds had mattress toppers on them which were very comfortable. Accommodation was spacious and light. Large modern kitchen with adequate utensils etc. A few points for consideration ( which did not affect our stay) :- Balcony & outside furniture could do with a clean. No WiFi. Would benefit from washing machine at the accommodation. Fixtures and fittings need maintenance (toilet roll holder, shaving light not working, sink plugs with no grid). This was an ideal base for exploring Cornwall, and is on a lovely site with good facilities, and nice to have use of the lovely swimming pool on site. We’ll definitely book again. Thank you.

  • "Overall the property was lovely, beds extremely comfortable."

TV wasn't working properly when we arrived, but we soon had that sorted. All kitchen equipment was new and of good quality. Kitchen cabinets need some TLC as does the downstairs flooring. Hot water upstairs takes forever to get hot and trickles really slowly. We didn't use any of the site facilities, just used the property as a base to go off and explore. Would definitely book again.

Very clean and well furnished, including the kitchen and beautifully decorated. Some instructions or map of the site to find the property would have been useful but we managed. Also asked maintenance to come out and look at the boiler (which had air trapped in it which is a potential fire hazard) but we never heard anything back. Happy with the onsite facilities and the reception and bar staff were always friendly, helpful and polite.

  • "This holiday accommodation and site really suited us, we like a quiet place with space to let the children play and the dogs to have an early morning or late night walk (that i could even do with PJs and a coat on without anyone being about)."

We found the property to be quiet, light, bright, spacious and clean. We liked taking a walk up to the onsite pub to have a drinking/meal and listen to the live band played while the children played giant Chess. One of my favourite things was to hear so much bird song first thing in the morning around the site. We would return and definitely recommend.

I emailed to advise of my disappointment, no reply. On arrival we couldnt park even though the instructions told us to park next to the apartment. Cottage was basic, no oven gloves no hair dryer, no scissors, dining chairs need fixing, many loose legs and one of the seats are falling through, oven was filthy. Tv couldnt get a signal so we couldnt watch it. Despite a ridiculous 8 hours between check out and check in our dishwasher hadnt been emptied so my first job of the holiday was to empty it! The book tells you to hoover before you leave! What are the cleaners doing in all that time. For a family with children we basically lost 2 days of a holiday and for the amount of money charged i felt it unjustifiable. We wont be coming back. We didnt use the facilities on site so cant comment on those. I wouldve complained whilst there but didnt know who to complain to, very impersonal service throughout and given i had no response to a previous email i didnt bother to waste my holiday time and mobile data on complaining.

  • "We expected the property to need a bit of updating based on reviews but were surprised to find that there appears to be a structural issue with the kitchen floor."

It was unsettlingly uneven, creaky and we were nervous walking in the area. We think that a stair gate should be provided as the staircase is in the open plan lounge. As a travel cot and high chair were provided clearly it was anticipated that there would be a toddler in the property. We adjusted the door on the fridge so that it actually could be closed. I won’t detail the many things that needed sorting, a list was left for the managing team on site. The mattresses were uncomfortable and having read earlier reviews took mattress toppers with us. The recently repaired balcony has created a trip hazard. The only plus point is that the site itself is very pleasant. Finally the photos need to be updated to give an honest idea of what is being booked.

  • "It's a lovely spot, indoor pool is nice and the outdoor pool was open before we left (they had issues with it)."

Reception staff lovely friendly and helpful. Went into the onsite pub one evening just to have a change of scenery and that was nice. Only had a drink, no food. WiFi is good in there. The listing description says nearest beach is 10 minutes away. It's not. It's a good half hour. It was also advertised with WiFi which was why I booked it as I knew I would need to work, but it didn't have any wifi. And as 4g wasn't strong, that was the biggest issue. I had to go and buy a mifi router in the end, which was an additional expense I didn't expect. The actual accommodation was nice and spacious and love the downstairs was the bedrooms and upstairs the living area. Had most basic things you would need. It does need a bit of tlc though in places. Some clever balcony photography going on as it wasn't as big as it looks and no lovely little round wooden table as the image suggests! It did have some garden furniture though :-)

Thank you for completing your feedback.  We are glad that you enjoyed both the accommodation and the site and its facilities. Wifi was removed from the property in March of this year and notifications were sent out to inform all future guests who had bookings in place. Outdoor furniture which is exposed to the elements, over time does need replacing, so we are sorry that the little wooden table was not available for use.  Property Owner

There are just a few points I would like to make. 1. On entry there was a strong damp smell in the downstairs areas. 2. Mattresses are extremely hard to the extent that we had to sleep on the duvets. 3. The whole villa was not particularly clean on arrival. 4. Key entry on the door was extremely difficult to open. The site is beautiful and peaceful, the staff were polite and went out of their way to ensure that the facilities were made available in a covid safe way. We loved the location- out of the way of the crowds but only a short drive to many loads of great attractions. The lodge was comfortable, relaxing and had everything we needed. The living room/kitchen area was much bigger than expected, as was the balcony. The beds were comfortable, we all slept well each night. We found everything we needed in the kitchen and we loved that the kitchen overlooked the park so we could see our children as they played there. The only downside was that there was a damp smell in the downstairs area as you come in, however this didn't spoil our holiday and wouldn't stop us from returning- we had a great time!

  • "The accommodation was dated & needs serious TLC."

The outside space which was the main reason we booked this property was unable to be used, the outside furniture provided was old, unstable and in a terrible condition, we were unable to use it, considering it was 30deg heat we were stuck indoors. The "so called view over Tamar Valley" was overlooking a tarmac car park and the other accommodation opposite. The mattress in the main room was shocking, so old/cheap and uncomfortable after the 1st night my partner woke up in agony with his back & the following 2 nights slept in the 2nd bedroom on a single bed - unfortunately the single mattresses were not much better. not what we expect on holiday to be in a position that we need to sleep separately! The 2 x2 seater sofas were plastic so with the sun beaming through the window were so uncomfortable, and without being able to use the oustside space we had no alternative but to use. The sofas were uncomfortable & impractical. The park itself was nice but again needed TLC, the paintwork to the play area was shabby, the paintwork in general was shabby, the general park was shabby. We paid what we consider a lot of money for this holiday & it resulted in us leaving on Thursday morning despite being booked until Saturday, this is how disappointed we were in this holiday. I feel disgusted and let down. Unfortunately this is not what we have come to expect from Sykes Cottages, we have booked 3 holidays through yourself and have had a wonderful experience so far - this however has let you down badly. We are in the process of booking another holiday but will be cautious to use you again and will be looking elsewhere.

The only thing which caused us a small problem was the lack of WiFi access. There is no WiFi at the property which was more of a problem than we had anticipated. This was compounded by the advertised site WiFi not functioning either. About the location

CALLINGTON

Tavistock 9 miles; Launceston 11.5 miles; Plymouth 14.6 miles.

Callington is a Cornish market town, rich in mining heritage and overlooked by Kit Hill, the highest point in the area, donated to the people of Cornwall by Prince Charles to celebrate the birth of Prince William. From the top of Kit Hill there are fabulous views across south-east Cornwall as far as Plymouth Sound. Callington is set in the heart of the Tamar Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and offers a good selection of shops, inns and cafes, as well as being the home of Ginsters Cornish pasties. A few miles away, the quaint village of Calstock clings to the steep banks of the river Tamar and is dominated by the splendid Calstock Railway Viaduct, a giant 11-arched stone construction supporting one of Britain’s most picturesque branch lines running through the Tamar Valley. Other interesting places along the river are Cotehele, a beautiful historic house and gardens owned by the National Trust with a small quay and inn, and Morwhellam Quay, a theme park that staged a living history production for the BBC and where visitors can explore the rich mining heritage and watch blacksmiths, potters and craftsmen at work. The pannier market town of Tavistock is only nine miles from Callington and is well worth a visit on your way to a day’s walk on Dartmoor. A splendid base to explore south Cornwall and West Devon.
