  • "After reading the previous reviews, we were a little worried about staying here, but we shouldn’t have been!"

What an absolutely beautiful cottage, right in the perfect place of port Isaac. Beds comfy, and property was clean. The only thing is the floor as you walk in to the cottage is a little sandy, but it’s unavoidable as you’re coming straight from the beach. Beds were clean and comfy, as was the rest of the cottage. The only thing If I had to mention, is the shower door doesn’t fully close so the bathroom floor gets wet, but nothing major at all. I’d 100% book to come back here again. We’re missing it already!

Thankyou for your feedback. Following recent reviews, both the owner and us here at John Bray Cornish Holidays have worked to rectify the raised issues the have been previously mentioned and we are glad you enjoyed the property so much! We hope to have you back again soon! - John Bray Cornish Holidays on behalf of the owner. Property Owner

  • "SLUGS on the floor in kitchen, laundry room and bathroom."

Don't go barefoot. Dirty, even after an extra cleaning. Walls, window sills, door frames very grimy. The cleaners are very young...maybe no one taught them to clean.? Lots of cobwebs in corners and on ceiling even after I tried to sweep down. Total deep cleaning and refurbishing needed. At the price, I would not stay again.

Thank you for your feedback. We understand that you had checked in earlier than the required 4pm time so our cleaners did not have the chance to sort these issues out before you arrived. We have passed on the comments to them following the clean they managed to carry out. We hope you still managed to enjoy your visit despite these issues and would love to welcome you back to North Cornwall in the future. - John Bray Cornish Holidays on behalf of the owner. • "On entering the cottage it was clear someone had been to clean due to wet floors, however the cottage was in need of a good clean, kitchen, light switches and the tv remote was especially grotty."

The freezer door was broken and hanging on, a few minutes after entering the property two members of staff knocked the door and entered to see if housekeeping had been. They took photos of the broken freezer door and said they would sort this. Despite us just doing a shop which included some frozen foods, no repairs was undertaken whilst we were at the cottage and we couldn’t store further frozen foods during our stay. The vent across the round was so loud and several nights went on until 11.30pm, this was highlighted in the booking, but this went on for much longer than expected. The bins scenario was poorly communicated, no extra liners provided or outside seagull proof bags provided. We had to take our rubbish home to dispose of. The accommodation to the right of the cottage was housing several younger people during the week, 1st through to 4th night they were so loud after midnight, drunk in the roads, shouting and on the second night climbing up into the bedroom windows from the outside, it totally ruined our stay. They kept the children awake 4 nights running. My husband 3 times went out and asked them to calm down. I feel seriously saddened about our stay here. So much so we cut our weeks holiday short and left on Wednesday.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your stay. We're very sorry that you had to experience these issues during your visit and that we could not fix the freezer door in time! Your comments have been passed on to the team here at John Bray Cornish Holidays to review and inspect. We are afraid that with Cloam being in the heart of the village there may be a high number of passers by in close proximity. We hope we can welcome you back to North Cornwall in the future. - John Bray Cornish Holidays on behalf of the owner. Property Owner

Thank you so much for your feedback. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay and would love to welcome you back anytime in the future! • "This little old cottage was lovely."

It has such character, is in a great location, and the allocated parking space is a God send! The cottage has everything you need for a week away. Thank goodness for the wifi as we had no phone signal in the village. You get used to the noise of the extractor fan from the restaurant across the way, the smell of fish, the seagull alarm clock at 5am, and people walking past staring in at you. There were a couple of issues including housekeeping (luckily I came armed with cleaning supplies), and the rubbish collection. However, the letting agency promptly responded to and dealt with this. The only significant issue that we had was that the carpets upstairs smelled strongly of wet dog which was very unpleasant. We kept the windows open as much as possible, bought some air fresheners to try and help with the smell, and informed the letting agents so that the owners can be advised to do something about it. Overall we enjoyed our stay in Port Isaac at Cloam Cottage and were happy with the service received from Sykes/John Bray.

  • "On arrival we could not park the car as there was a John bray van parked in the way of are parking space,so had to drive to the office to ask someone if the van could be moved, but the office was closed so I then drove back to the old school house where I am meant to park the car ,to get a number off the van to ask someone to move it ,not what you want when you have driven over 200 miles."

After we got into the cottage my wife sat down on the settee only to jump up as the one end of the settee was wet from I guess one of the cleaners trying to do something with it as I could smell cleaning detergent on it , maybe a note could of been left to warn us !. On 4 occasion's when we come back from a evening out we was greeted with slugs on the floor. I have stayed in this cottage many times but this was my worst experience I have ever had .

Thank you for your feedback. We are so sorry that one of our maintenance men were parked in your allocated spot on arrival whilst on another job and that you could not get in touch with us to move it. Also we apologise that there was no note left on the sofa to warn you. We only wish you informed us of the slugs during your stay as we could have sent a local pest control company to the property to investigate. We hope you still enjoyed your stay despite these issues and we would love to welcome you back in the future! - John Bray Cornish Holidays. Property Owner

  • "Although Cloam Cottage is perfectly placed in Port Isaac there are a few problems - some can be dealt with, some cannot."

There were only two of us and it felt cramped in the living room - I don't see how 4 people would fare there. The seagull-proof large black bin bag took several emails, and one personal visit before it arrived on day 6. not nice having a bin bag full of rubbish sitting in the kitchen. The owners clearly don't care about its visitors as there are no instructions for anything and no 'help' booklet - usually provided in rental properties. A larger TV would be much appreciated as the one currently in situ is not much bigger than a laptop. The kitchen really needs a little TLC - broken cupboards, broken salad drawer in small fridge - easy to cut your hand on. We could also not find anywhere - other than the tiny fridge - to put our own food. On arrival - late Saturday afternoon - we found half a toilet roll in the downstairs shower room - surely a pack of 4 is not beyond the wit of man! All these problems are easy to remedy. those that are. not are: the stairs are very steep and quite dangerous - there should be a warning for old and very young prospective guests; the noise from the pubs' fan is loud, so having the windows or door open is almost impossible. The lack of an outside space means that if the weather is bad, you will be stuck in a very small internal living room - the photos on the website make it look far bigger than it is. Also the view from the living room, and indeed the two bedrooms, is the brick wall of the pub, only feet away - no sea view here! The only thing to be done about these problems is to highlight them on the website. Positive points, location near to the harbour, the designated parking space at the Old School House, two bedrooms are good, although the one with the double bed has no space to get around the bed, so not really suitable for older people. Having said this, Port Isaac is lovely and near to many great places to visit. I will go back to the village, just not in this cottage.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your stay. We're very sorry that you had to experience these issues during your visit. We had delivered a seagull proof bin bag to the property the day after you arrived as requested but frustratingly the council mistakenly took this away which was unknown to us until you rightly raised this again with us. We are placing the welcome packs back into our properties in the coming weeks following the easing of COVID-19 rules and restrictions. We will investigate the reported broken features reported so thank you for raising them. Regarding the noise from the pub/restaurant next door, we will be talking with them as this is a recurring issue and this has been agreed in the past to be resolved. Once again, we thank you for your feedback. - John Bray Cornish Holidays Property Owner

  • "Cloam Cottage has been badly neglected by the owners."

To charge £894 for a week shows utter contempt for their guests ( it was £620 in 2021) The positives: quality bedding and towels, hot water, good wifi, good shower, great location in the village and the car park space is invaluable. The negatives: the noise and smells of fish from the extractor fan of the Mote restaurant is unbearable. The owner should contact the council about it! The front of the property and windows are filthy. needs to be cleaned weekly. the description, photos and the star rating are completely out of date. The cottage hasn't been updated for years. The furnishings and cushions are old and dirty. chips on crockery and bread jar. Broken hinges on cupboard doors, fridge shelves broken, toilet roll holder broken. No shower non slip mat - I bought one and left it there! No cleaning materials! not one toilet roll was left. The toilet brushes had no holders! there was no information book in the cottage - what to do with rubbish? recycling? the TV needs replacing and for the rental cost one would expect Netfix or similar. I would not recommend Cloam Cottage and will not be re visiting whilst it is in this condition.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused by these issues. Your comments have been received and are being investigated and rectified. The price increase has taken into consideration the increase in energy and fuel prices and reflects this but we understand how a price increase is frustrating. We are in the process of placing the welcome information packs back into out properties following the easing of COVID-19 rules and regulations. We hope you still managed to enjoy your visit despite these issues and we would love to welcome you back to North Cornwall in the future. - John Bray Cornish Holidays. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is centrally located in Port Isaac, beds were clean & comfy, linen good quality, bathrooms clean & the nearby parking space was invaluable."

The cottage is lovely but sadly neglected, had it been the odd issue we would have ignored this. However the staff, especially Jenny at John Bray were extremely professional, helpful & responsive Other reviews from March mention dirty windows & doors, they were dreadful covered in grime & although a window cleaner was arranged, the delay meant we had to clean them ourselves. It would be hoped that the window cleaner is now a regular arrangement We also found many items including a pair of shoes under the sofa & dirty tissues under the bed With the exception of the washer dryer, the rest of the appliances, utensils & crockery were either rusty, mouldy or broken. The owner & agency did however arrange for the cooker to be replaced, some wine glasses & offered a re-clean. But as these things understandably took time to arrange & the 4/5 day delay meant we cleaned everything ourselves The advertised broadband did not work for the full week & we had to raise a repair with the supplier. Whilst we appreciate this is a rural area, other properties had functioning wifi Hopefully these issues will be addressed for future clients, appliances replaced, the property inspected & cleaned to an acceptable standard & the cottage could be amazing

  • "The cottage was lovely and putting a wc in upstairs was greatly appreciated."

We were aware of the noise from the fan in the Mote restaurant across the road - which was initially quite intrusive but we got used to it. The windows and the outside of the cottage do not appear to be cleaned regularly that was a minor issue but it would be nice. We Love Port Isaac and will definitely be back. The dedicated car parking space was fabulous and much appreciated. We did have minor water ingress when it rained via the skylight in the utility room.

  • "There was no bin bag provided, arrived after the rubbish was collected on the Saturday morning."

The outside of the property was filthy and clearly had not had windows or door cleaned for some considerable time. Entry into the property was unpleasant resulting in dirty hands and marks on clothes. The inside of the property was excellent, although there was a lack of wine glasses. The filming of Doc Martin was taking place outside the property and some indication that this was going to happen would have been helpful, to be woken at 6.30 and 6.45 am on two mornings and the noise and disruption with film crew stood in the doorway, in front of windows blocking out the light and cups of coffee on the widow sills I found to be unacceptable . When challenged about it the response was you should have been informed by the letting agency, although I feel the responsibility was with the film crew who could have put a note through the door and been a bit more respectful about access to the property. I would happily book the cottage again despite the difficulties.

  • "Lovely cosy cottage, we have stopped here before so we were aware of the extractor fan noise and smell from the Mote restaurant, the cottage has everything you will need for a great stay close to the beach and other amenities very clean with a great atmosphere, parking space is great at the top of the hill as you don’t have to navigate through the narrow streets as it does get busy during the day."

Would definitely recommend this cottage to stop in but not if you want the sound of the sea between 9am and 11pm that’s the only negative.

  • "Lovely cottage in a wonderful location."

Parking is fiddly if you have a large car, and there is a restaurant extractor fan opposite the front door that sounds like a jet engine from about 9am to 11pm - so would be impossible to open windows in summer. Water pressure is amazing, but don’t turn the shower on without holding the shower-head away from you! Only improvement would be some net curtains downstairs to stop people gawping at you.

The property

Cloam Cottage is a traditional, fisherman’s dwelling located in the centre of Port Isaac, on Cornwall’s north coast.

This self-catering property sleeps up to four guests and is perfect for a family holiday or romantic break for two, well-positioned near the beach and range of local amenities.

There are plenty of characterful features to admire when you arrive; slate flooring runs throughout the ground floor, exposed beams are on show in every room and the sitting room has a large fireplace and woodburning stove to cosy up in front of.

The ground floor also contains a well-kitted out kitchen, a separate utility room which includes a washer/dryer and additional storage space, and a family bathroom with a walk-in shower.

Upstairs you will find two stylishly decorated bedrooms, one double room and one twin, as well as an additional WC.

Much of Port Isaac is unchanged from hundreds of years ago, and you can see this in the picturesque harbour, traditional buildings, and rugged coastline.

Port Isaac is known for its winding streets and alleyways, with one of the narrowest known thoroughfares in Britain, aptly named Squeezy Belly Alley!

When the sun is shining you can head to the small, sandy beach at Port Isaac or venture down the coast to the larger beaches at Daymer Bay or Rock, and practice building sandcastles, surfing or just relaxing with a good book.

Boat trips out to sea, whether fishing or wildlife watching are a perfect way to admire the coastal scenery, while those who prefer dry land can ramble along the South West Coast Path for scenic adventures.

For your next Cornish break, stay at Cloam Cottage.
