  • "We liked the house very much."

The rooms are tastfully and with love decorated. One suggestion: In the smaller bedroom ( first floor) I needed some wallhooks with hangers and a small chair in order to take the clothes off in the evening. Nevertheless nothing to complain about ! Everything is made for a nice stay. Thank you! Reina from Germany

Thank you Reina for your lovely comments and we are very pleased you had a nice visit to The Mizzen in Port Isaac. We always appreciate suggestions and we will implement the addition of some wall hooks and a chair for the room as soon as possible. Kind regards The Owner Property Owner

  • "In so many ways Mizzen is a lovely old stone fisherman’s cottage in PI."

Ideally situated. However some frustrations for us. Inadequate cutlery, crockery and glasses. 16 soup spoons! 10 egg cups but only 4 teaspoons and four dessert spoons no small glasses and only four unmatching pint size glasses. No kitchen scissors, saucepan lids don’t fit the saucepans. One that does is broken and has sharp edges and really should be removed. No culender for draining vegetables or pasta. In self catering you need the basics to cater for 6 without having to wash up half way through a meal.

Thank you for providing feedback from your stay at The Mizzen. We agree it is a great cottage in an ideal location. We have noted the shortage of cutlery and kitchen items and will look into replenishing them. Thank you for booking with us and we hope to welcome you back anytime in the future - John Bray Cornish Holidays on behalf of the owner. Property Owner

  • "Misrepresentation and Poor Property We reached out, via email, on the night of arrival to Sykes Cottages through whom we booked to ask for support."

Until today, Sunday 19 May 2024 we have had no one reach out to us. We booked this Mizzen property as it was highlighted that it was beautifully refurbished. When we booked the response to the bad reviews was that this was “old news” and now it was sympathetically upgraded. This is a true misrepresentation. it is in areas repainted and yes new furniture has been put in the house. Just spending money on new Cream of Cornwall light shades, crockery, chopping board, sofas and kitchen for them to look good in the pictures for the booking is not going to fool anyone. The overwhelming smell of damp in the property hits you the moment you walk through the door. Not welcoming at all. The garden when we arrived was in an absolutely disgusting and filthy state. The whole garden was full of bird poo, the chairs were found all around the garden and the weeds were well established all settled in the patio slates. Nothing like the description: “The door at the rear of the kitchen leads out to an enclosed patio garden with shrubs and colourful plants – a delightful spot to sit and enjoy a Cornish cream tea or a home cooked meal”. The real situation too filthy to enjoy anything. We spent the first hour of our stay cleaning part of this area and pulling out the established weeds Other points that need attention; 1. The property is super damp, the owners must know this as they provided several damp - soak up kits. We had people suffering from asthma in our group, not acceptable at all 2. On the first day, we could not get the showers to work without scolding ourselves 3. No bath mats are supplied, we had to go and buy our own 4. The front of the property looks uncared for and is full of bird poo 5. The back of the property also uncared for and full of bird poo 6. The previous occupants have highlighted the issue with the handles being all loose, this has not been rectified. The doors do not shut and the handles will fall off if you had to pull a door open 7. General state of the property is poor 8. This is a no smoking property, the garden was full of cigarette butts outside 9. The laundry rack outside is not fit for use, it is in such a bad state of repair 10. The chairs outside look like they have recently been purchased but because no one cared for this they are filthy and full of rust, which you would get on your clothes if you were to use them. 11. Freezer compartment in fridge broken and all iced up - looks like a long term problem 12. The property floor inside was also dirty on arrival 13. Picture of the front of the property is misleading it is actually a semi - detached property 14. The windows in the bathroom could not be secured on the ground floor 15. No basics provided such as loo roll, salt pepper; a starter kit would have been helpful Positives 1. Beds are good and bedding clean ( this was the only reason we stayed) 2. Kitchen. Looks recently upgraded and is indeed well equipped 3. Washing/ drying machine good to use 4. Location excellent in the middle of Port Isaac The marketing information lists; At the end of an exciting day return to The Mizzen to relax, before doing it all over again! We certainly will not stay here again. We shared this property with our Australian friends and feel embarrassed by all points listed and hardly the best Cornwall has to offer. Photos can be provided to support this review upon request.

Thank you for providing us with feedback from your stay at The Mizzen. We are sorry to hear about the issues experienced during your stay. We have noted these concerns and are working on a swift resolution to ensure improvements are in place for the future. • "Overall stay was very good, we thoroughly enjoyed our time at the cottage."

Obvious damp problem in the main lounge wall with plaster peeling away all across the wall. Need general maintenance on a few small jobs, such as nearly all of the internal door handles are hanging off. Outside appearance of the cottage could be smartened up quite easily.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused by these issues. Your comments have been passed on to the team here at John Bray Cornish Holidays and to the owner. • "Mizzen is a a lovely cottage inside."

Well decorated and furnished though master bed bit firm for us. We did have a lot of rain on day one and it flooded the front yard of the cottage, due to blocked drain and water also came into the cottage. Frustrating and smelly, maintenance needed on guttering. We called and John Bray representative got back to me quickly and plumber came out cleared drain within 24hrs. Thank you. They also got the over grown back garden sorted.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your stay. We're very sorry that you had to experience these issues during your visit but thank you for your patience and understanding whilst we sorted them for you. • "We had a great week in the village."

The property needs a little maintenance. The guttering is broken at front, bathrooms need a refurb. When we booked we thought there was a car parking space, Sykes never got back to clarify this. We loved staying in the village, even if the logistics of getting in and out with older family was a bit challenging.

Thank you for providing us with your feedback following your stay at The Mizzen, it is great to hear you had a great week. I have passed your feedback onto the maintenance team they will ensure the guttering is fixed. I will update the website in regards to the parking space so it is clear, I am really sorry that you question wasn’t answered – John Bray Cornish Holiday’s on behalf of the owners. Property Owner

  • "There were no basic necessities such as extra toilet paper, no paper towels, tea, sugar and no nespresso pods for the coffee maker-which you can’t just go out and buy at a shop so there’s really no point in having it there."

The dishwasher didn’t work and despite reaching out to Sykes Cottages via email several times no one ever got back to me. The upstairs shower could really use either a good scrub or new grout. The location was great, right in the center of town which was very convenient.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused by these issues. Our properties are self catering by nature so these extra provisions are not provided. Beds very comfortable, sofas not. Water pressure too low in both showers-I have longish hair which wash 2- 3 times a week & it was difficult to wash shampoo out. Saucepan handles loose which made saucepans unsafe, we tightened the screw using a knife. No washing up bowl or drainer. Only 5 normal sized mugs yet property sleeps 6. No sieve or collander. No table mats & plastic tablecloth on dining table. Expected higher standard for price

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide us with your feedback following your recent stay at The Mizzen. We have raised the issues with the water pressure and sauce pan handles with the maintenance team. We are speaking with the owner in regards to the washing up bowl, drainer, mugs, sieve, colander, table mats and table cloth. • "The property is beginning to show signs of what is probably fairly heavy use."

The two single bedrooms have no hanging space at all which is fairly inconvenient for the occupants of those rooms. The location right in the centre of Port Isaac is great but it’s not for the elderly or infirm as vehicular access is pretty difficult. The reference by one reviewer to having a parking space is presumably a joke, the street is barely 1.5m wide and car access impossible.

  • "Although the cottage was beautiful, the garden was very overgrown and dangerous to access as the steps were overgrown with a bush."

There were no hangers and when we asked for some we only got a few. There were no hand towels. The light was broken/maybe a bulb had gone in the downstairs toilet. There was a broken mug in the cupboard hidden at the back. There weren’t enough hooks for towels/coats. The single bedrooms had no hooks or hanger options. The single bedrooms blinds let all the light in. It just wasn’t as comfortable as we were expecting. Although the washing machine was awesome to have and that was a bonus. The dishwasher worked really well. However, Port Isaac is wonderful and it was a wonderfully unique place to stay.
