  • "We was very disappointed with this property."

As soon as we opened the gate to the garden we felt disheartened especially after a very long drive but then when we opened the patio doors the smell of damp hit us ! The cottage needed a lot doing to it and alot of the faults had been noted in the guest book 3 years ago...a dripping tap, the smell of damp, poor plumbing in the en suite bathroom but yet it hadn't been resolved. On our visit the microwave was dirty as was the bin, the kettle was brown inside and the outdoor space was neglected. The shower upstairs was not great, having to stop the water mid shower to allow the water to drain as the plug hole clogged up. The bathroom downstairs we didn't use as for some unknown reason it had alot of flies. In general it needed a good clean, windows dirty , cobwebs an skirting crumbling in kitchen . Such a shame as area was lovely, beaches beautiful and people very friendly. Unfortunately we didn't even get the welcoming cream tea !

Stayed in a similar property a few doors down a couple of times before so know the area well and knew what to expect from an old Cornish cottage with their low doorways and sloping ceilings. Mind your head. Very clean on arrival and everything you needed. Bit of an issue with the plumbing in this property, Showers being the main problem. The were very intermittent with having water get to them. If you use the on-suite one then the main one wouldn’t work or vice versa. Got told this was due to known airlock issues and to put the shower head in the tray to clear. This sometimes worked but turning a basin tap on also helped. Hot water runs out quickly too. Not great for a family of four all wanting showers. Very loud water pump too. Sort the plumbing and it would get five stars;)

  • "We really enjoyed our stay here, the cottage itself was really nice."

Just a couple niggles, the Onsuite shower could only be used for around 2 minutes then the water went cold and the Sanilav loo had moments when it was a bit smelly. The location is fantastic and a nice period cottage while showing its age it had been looked after well. I think the garden gate needs looking at as the wrong side opens with regard to the step.

  • "We loved our stay in Pebble Cottage."

The location is excellent - just a couple of minutes walk from Portreath beach. The cottage itself is also lovely and very clean. We loved the conservatory and the connection to the garden. The front bedroom was our other favourite room. The kitchen was very well equipped - the only thing we would have liked to have which wasn't there was a fish slice. The only other thing we can think of to improve is the gate into the garden - it is quite tricky to open and close, especially if you are not very tall as it is situated right at the front of a step up and also the bolt doesn't align quite properly with the thing it slides into.

Only comment perhaps a warning on the site that the stairs are quite steep, my 80 year old mother struggled a bit. It would be nice if there were some sun loungers and a BBQ as we had a sunny week and spent a lot of the time in the garden. Would definately recommend and consider returning

  • "The cottage was well presented on arrival with a pleasant smell upon entering."

Great base for exploring the area and particularly attractive is the fact that the beach is such a short walk away. For guests who like a nearby pub, this too is only a few doors down the lane. It is a nice touch that the owners provide a Cornish cream tea on arrival and this has clearly been popular with other guests. The bed is indeed very comfortable, as has been mentioned in other reviews. There is a very slight smell in the en suite but not offensively so, and a plug-in air freshener had been provided in the bedroom. The shower in there can be temperamental: on the first evening I couldn't get it to work at all so had to relocate to the shower downstairs. However, after that it seemed to work OK although sometimes it didn't come on straight away. When it works it is powerful. The shower downstairs is also powerful but quite noisy. While there are coasters on the bedside tables it would be useful if there were a few coasters to use on the occasional tables downstairs. There does really need to be an oven glove in the kitchen. I only used the oven once but when I did, I had to improvise with one of toweling floor mats. Not at all the fault of the owners but one of the saucepans and some plastic tongs had not been left in a nice condition by a previous guest. There were some fairly substantial renovations going on next door but these didn't intrude too much most of the time. The access lane to the cottage is very narrow. Fortunately throughout our stay there was no inconsiderate parking but if a vehicle had been parked in the road - say, to drop off a substantial delivery - residents would have no option but to wait until the vehicle had been moved. But overall, a well-presented, clean and comfortable cottage and we were happy here.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback your comments have been taking on board. We will insure there is oven gloves at the property and sorry this was missed. We are pleased to hear were happy and you enjoyed you time at Pebble Cottage. Property Owner

  • "Super good property and loved our stay."

A few extra bits in the kitchen would have made it perfect - that's being mega fussy I know but the pans need replacing as most of the handles are really loose and there was nothing really there to bake with like a casserole dish. Also the upstairs shower only worked intermittently but it was wonderful having another downstairs and both were lovely and clean.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback. We are so glad that you had a lovely holiday. The handles on all of the pans have been tightened. We have to be careful to not over fill the cupboards with cooking and baking utensils and feel ourselves that adequate amounts of these items are provided. The issue with the shower has been dealt with. Thank you for bringing these points to our attention and we do hope that we might be able to welcome you back again in the not too distant future. • "We have never had any problems with Sykes cottages in the past but although pebble cottage was in a great position for the beach, facilities and visiting the area we found a few things lacking as the heating was inadequate for the time of year and we had to supply a lot of logs to keep warm in the evening."

It was generally clean but there was no washing machine as advertised and in the past we have always been offered clean bed linen, towels etc for the second week. We had regular visits from a pair of rats in the garden along with the constant sewage smell from the harbour was rather off putting. This is not a complaint but hopefully constructive criticism.

We are sorry to hear that you did not find the washing machine which is located in the shed in the back yard. A starter pack of logs and kindling is supplied and there are night storage heaters throughout the property. It is normal to offer a change of linen for a 2 week stay, we are sorry that this did not happen on this occasion. We hope you enjoyed your stay Property Owner

It didn’t spoil our trip at at. Shop and bakery was great with gluten free scones and pasties. We would have liked a casserole dish and maybe a stair gate for conservatory to keep dog in while he dried out. Lovely bedding and comfy bed. A great place for a break

Few little niggles. Lots of bin liners and dustbin full at front of garden. Unfortunately we had to leave even more rubbish. Heating was little hard to work out. Door latch to double bedroom would not function stair side. We put something there to stop it closing but the last day didn’t bother. Wind blew it shut and could not get in until 23.45 as we had been out. Also curtain rail in twin kept coming down and had been reported before in comments book. Hot water could do with a caution by kitchen tap and dog door on twin room needs something on attached rail. Could be very bad for a child to catch on to.

Overcome with stale doggy smells as we entered the cottage. Rolled & moved hearth rug to utility room for the duration of our stay & we sprayed all carpets with disinfectant. Deep clean needed. On entering gate, full rubbish bags & full bin were left from previous guests & remained in garden for duration of our 1 week stay. Appalling stench from ensuite bathroom flowing into bedroom along with noisy saniflow system that we rarely used. Damp in upstairs bedroom wall/ceiling corners on outside walls & window recess. Not good for anyone with respiratory problems. Shelf in downstairs bathroom cupboard broken. Needs fixing. Dirty cooker hob. Needs some hob brite/scraping. Oven needs good clean - smells stale. Lovely area near pubs, cafe, shop & a stones throw from beautiful beach & fab walks. Decent bus service to rail links for exploring Cornwall on foot without car. Friendly, welcoming locals. Couldn't fault the area at all.

5 minutes from the beach and harbour. Plus decent pubs and restaurants. Portreath is a beautiful village and very friendly. Beach is gorgeous but not overcrowded. There has been a few negative reviews about the en-suite bathroom but we did not find it an issue. The parking was fine & no problem to turn around, we have a Mercedes estate. The headroom in the living room is low but it is an old fisherman’s cottage - my husband just learnt to duck whenever he left the room! The garden is secure, our mad mut couldn’t escape. It’s a lovely sun trap to sit & relax with a good book or a glass of something chilled & alcoholic! We enjoyed our holiday so much that we are even thinking of rebooking next year.

Beach within walking distance and other places just a short drive. The beds were extremely comfortable and we slept really well. Just some general feedback - would be great if there was a draining board as it was difficult to balance the washing up. It the living room television was on a wall bracket that you could manover so everyone had a good view in the evening. No wooden spoon for cooking which was a pain. The shower downstairs stopped working due to an air bubble but the plumber that came showed us how to fix this. Just take the shower head off as hold it on the floor to get the water flowing. The downstairs bathroom had no heating but we reported this and they fixed this as we were leaving ready for the next guest. The hot water was a bit temperamental if you had 4 people wanting to shower at the same time. We didn't find parking an issue and it was easy to do a 3 point turn to get out of the lane. Apart from the small niggles listed above our stay was wonderful and the scone, jam and cream was a lovely touch. We'd highly recommend this property and would book again.

Such a lovely touch -Thank You. The cottage was Perfect for our dogs too. There is only one tiny issue (and its not a big enough issue to let it ruin a holiday) is parking. We have quite a long saloon car & had an adventure parking. After the first day we worked out it was easier to reverse all the way down the lane. I can imagine if you drove anything bigger like a 4x4 it may be quite difficult to park (& not overlap neighbouring parking spaces..) Our suggestion to resolve the parking issue would be:. Seing as the Summer House does not appear to be used- take that out & move the fence /gate back just a few meters to make more parking space. But other than that everything was great.
