  • "What a great little find."

Perfect cottage for a quiet and relaxing getaway and the dogs loved it. Everything we could possibly need, very well equipped! Actually preferred not having wi-fi as gave us a real break from work emails :) loved the local area and visited Bude, and Lydford Gorge. Perfect weather too which was lovely. Would highly recommend for a couples get away. The cottage is done out to a very high standard and is very cosy and comfortable. The log burner was divine and made the cold clear nights warm and homely-logs and kindling supplied which was a nice touch. Found some lovely walks nearby and as a runner some lovely, if hilly routes that really take in the views. 5* all round. The only thing we commented on was that to just finish it off perfectly it would be nice to have some photos or pictures downstairs, may e of the local area/scenery to just finish it off, but cannot fault the cottage in any way and this did not detract from our enjoyment of our stay.

Thank you so much for the thorough and detailed review. So pleased you enjoyed your stay, and some great recommendations here for other guests. Great feedback on the photos/pictures downstairs, I will discuss this with the housekeeper. We do hope to see again soon Property Owner

An issue with the TV having no signal the first night but this was rectified very quickly which I was grateful for. A great location to explore Devon and Cornwall and nice and quiet for my 2 dogs. I would only suggest a floor lamp by the sofa so the main lights can be turned off to make even more relaxing. I will be returning for sure next year, it was one of the best places I’ve stayed in.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback, it really is appreciated. Apologies again about the TV, and I'm glad we could resolve quickly. That is a great suggestion regarding the floor lamp, I will discuss this with the housekeeper, and see if we can get this added to the house. Its great to hear you will be returning. look forward to hearing from you soon. Property Owner

All essentials are to hand and the woodburning stove was very welcome on chilly October evenings. The location is good for visits to many lovely seaside towns, attractively villages, old country houses and also monasteries. One of our favourite days out was to Tintagel. Anne & James

Thank you very much for your feedback and always nice to see returning guests. The woodburning stove is always a favourite, and Tintagel mentioned a lot as recommended place to visit. Hope to see you book again soon. Property Owner

We were a bit dissapointed that there was no wifi at all, and we couldnt pick up any BBC channels on the TV. But it did make for a peacful visit!!

Thank you for your feedback, I'm glad you had a peaceful stay. I tried very hard to get WIFI installed in the cottage for a long period of time via numerous different providers, however unfortunately because of the remoteness of the location, there is no infrastructure to enable this. The TV normally works fine, so I will make sure to get this checked for the next guests, thanks for letting me know. Property Owner

  • "We actually loved this little cottage."

It has been fitted out to a very high standard. The downstairs gave us absolutely everything that we would need or want. The only issue for us was the bathroom which because of the sloping ceiling made life a little awkward. This is shown in the photographs so no deception. My only other comment is that whilst there are loads of power sockets there is not one near to a mirror for hair drying, or a mirror near a power socket. But seriously I would thoroughly recomend, it is delightful.

Thank you for your feedback, it is very much appreciated. Sorry about the sloping ceiling in the bathroom :) ......it keeps your neck muscles in good shape! Good point regarding the power socket, I will get a solution sorted for that. So pleased you enjoyed your stay, and look forward to seeing you again soon. Property Owner

  • "Last minute break, we realised as per accurate description bathroom had no full shower."

Rest of the property made up for this, very clean, lots of thought gone into providing, condiments, tea, coffee, dishwasher tabs, foil, and 2 disposable barbecues and welcome treats for dogs. From the photos you can see there is a gate to garden and dogs were secure and loved the space. I would definitely say property is dog friendly, I have never stayed anywhere that allows dogs upstairs or on furniture we take their beds and they were well settled. The refurbishment of the stable is tastefully done, and was a perfect base for exploring Devon and Cornwall. We all slept very well. Bed upstairs amazing, I normally miss my bed, but this one was exactly the same, a good decent mattress. I was a little worried that someone had mentioned about fleas previously, but did read other reviews before booking. I am very fussy, the stable was very, very clean. I would 100% recommended it, for us on network 3 didn't have a good signal, which is a bonus, we chose to stay in the middle of nowhere to switch off. Therefore, a lovely quirky building, perfect for dogs and a small family, in the middle of nowhere, to recharge your batteries. Thank you, the Davie family & Paddington & Yogi Bear.

I apologise for the issues during your stay. We did contact you on the 15th March on the mobile number you provided to offer a refresh during your stay, but we didn't get a reply. I checked with the housekeeper whether you had made contact about any of the issues, and she confirmed she didn't receive any communication from you. If you had contacted would have been able to resolve issues for you. The housekeeper checked the house post your visit and there is no sign of fleas. We have never had a flea issue, and always received exemplary cleanliness feedback from guests. Being that the house is in an agricultural surrounding, we do get flies and other natural insects that try to stay in the house with you, but if windows are not left open with lights on, food areas kept free of crumbs etc, then this avoids the extra residents coming to visit you. If you do come and stay again, please immediately contact the housekeeper with any queries/issues and we will get resolved immediately. Regards Downicary Chapel Stable Property Owner

Much larger than it appears on the photographs. Excellent facilities, there wasn’t anything I wanted that I couldn’t find. The bedroom was cosy and very comfortable. The garden would be lovely in the summer, it’s a shame it was too wet for me to sit out for long as the views are beautiful both front and rear. There were lots of pretty walks directly from the cottage, many around the lanes so you can still go out, if like me, you choose a week of torrential rain - I didn’t move my car until the Wednesday! If I was being really picky I would suggest the sofa is reorientated in the room as at no point on it can you sit and face the log burner. Would definitely stay again.

Thank you for your great feedback. I am sorry I couldn't arrange better weather for you :) Hope to see you again soon. Property Owner

  • "We booked through Sykes but found the property on ‘Dog friendly cottages’."

Although the property is beautiful, with outstanding views, decorated beautifully and has absolutely everything you need, we didn’t think it was very dog friendly. Firstly dogs aren’t allowed upstairs, our dog at home is, so we had to put chairs in front of the stairs to stop him getting up there, a stair gate would have been easier. Dogs are not allowed on the furniture, our dog at home is so it made it a bit of a nightmare trying to keep him off. The garden can only be reached via the front door to the side where there is a gate, so if you have a dog that will chase anything, ie, rabbits, foxes etc you have to pop a lead on them to get to the garden. A stunning place but in our opinion not dog friendly.

Excellent finish inside. Had everything we needed in kitchen. Loved the wood-burner. Location was very peaceful. Parking ample. Garden great with lovely views. CONS: It is in the listing's description, but we missed the fact that there was no wifi. Not the end of the world for looking up stuff online as 4G was fine, just would have been nice to use our Firestick to watch some films in the evening. Instead we had to watch TV, which I hate! Lots of flies from next door farm coming into house. Bathroom is tiny with slanted roof, very difficult and uncomfortable if you're over 4ft tall! Worst of all, mattresses were awful and desperately need replacing, especially the downstairs bedroom single ones. Lumpy springs and when knelt on, the mattress compressed so much that my knee touched the base of the bed (I'm only 80kg!). I had to sleep with a duvet on top of the mattress to get any sleep. Thankfully it was warm enough to do so, but would be horrible in winter. All in all, it is a lovely cottage. I would stay again if they replaced the mattresses.

Great location for privacy but still close enough to visit local areas and beaches. Couple of suggestions for the items needed: • A washing line and an airer (although stated there actually wasn’t one available) • Outdoor furniture as the pod (although lovely) is inadequate for a family bbq • A DVD player The only issue we really had was upon arrival we noticed the previous tenants rubbish/waste was overflowing and had not been collected. We had to look at this each time we went to the garden area and had no room for our own waste/recycling. This also attracted bugs/insects and animals close to the property. In the end I had to bag all of this waste and place outside the property for collection on the Wednesday but this never happened. Other than that we had a fantastic week and would very much book again through Sykes Cottages. Thank you

You need to walk them in on a lead ( mine is a pup so older dogs may be fine) Also be aware there are sheep in the field next door which is so lovely but there is only a wire fence between us which Hazel (my pup) could get under so had to be on a lead in the garden.
