  • "We have just returned from Cornwall, having booked Parula for 6 nights."

We arrived during a good spell of weather and as soon as we walked in the door, it smelt very mouldy and damp, we opened every door and window to try and get fresh air, even the furniture and bedding smelt of mould/damp and were slightly damp to the touch. We then noticed that there was mould all over the Lino on the kitchen floor, which had obviously been scrubbed away at some point. We stayed there for two nights, but as we were very concerned about the effect of mould/ damp on our health, we decided to find alternative accommodation. We approached the owner and politely informed him of our findings and our decision not to stay there. He said it was the first time he had heard this and couldn’t smell anything himself due to a sinus issue, but did agree with us that the mould was on the kitchen floor. After leaving the property, we decided to look at a few more reviews and going back further there were other people who had mentioned this to him and he had denied it then also. We want people to be aware of this issue before booking or arriving as if someone with asthma or chest problems stays there it could seriously impact their health.

Clean, comfortable and in easy travelling distance to all the local coast. Out of town enough to be peaceful but not so far out as to be inconvenient. Would definitely think about staying there again if we were to go back to the area.

  • "Parula is a delightful property."

In a quiet location adjacent to the owner’s property. Ideally located for the coast and the South West Coast Path. Also within easy reach of St Ives around Lands End to Penzance. Lands End airport is close at hand with regular flights to the Scilly Isles. I found Parula very comfortable and spacious. I would recommend Parula for two looking for a quiet relaxing break in the far South West of Cornwall. I will definitely be looking for another stay there in the future.

  • "I didn’t put 10 because the cottage is situated near the airport which may annoy some people."

The planes are small so not too noisy. Plus, i didn’t quite realise how tucked away it is, so you need the car to get anywhere. The bungalow itself is very comfortable and it was very close to a lot of local delights, like Sennen Cove, Minack Theatre, Land’s End, tin mines, St Ives

  • "We found Parula to be a clean, comfortable and cosy place to stay."

Our hosts were friendly and helpful, and, we appreciated the thoughtful touches such as the fresh potted plant and Easter chocolates. The decor is tasteful and calming. All equipment we needed was readily available for use as and when we required it. The local shops and beaches are easily accessible and there are many walks nearby - all these elements made our stay enjoyable.

  • "Listing wise, a number of issues."

No coffee machine or food processor, there was little in the way of books and games. Picture doesn't show that you have to move a sofa to use the dining table. Also, not listed, but would be expected - no shaver socket. In the bedroom, a lot of the drawers are very stiff, one drawer had a missing handle, and none of the wardrobe doors close. Not enough coat hangers. It should be clear where the key to the fire door is, as it was not obvious (a fire door is no good if it cannot be opened). The kitchen had just enough crockery/cutlery for 2, yet it had a full-size dishwasher - so you had a choice of washing by hand or running a mostly empty machine. Washing up by hand was not made easy by the lack of a plate rack on the draining board. Poor selection of kitchen utensils, and not enough cupboard space. There was nowhere to store our own food, so this had to stay in bags on the work tops, which meant there was little space to prepare food. The state of decoration was poor - hooks with no pictures, unfilled holes in wall, poorly fitted curtain rails in bedroom. At first inspection the property was quite clean, but with a closer look there were areas that hadn't been cleaned for a while, eg next to washing machine, on top of DVD player. The toilet sit was very loose - in our opinion dangerously so (nearly ended up on the floor a few times!) Finally, the property, advertised as a one bedroom (for 2), also had a second bedroom, which had a half made-up bed, with clothes scattered around and the room full of junk! OK we weren't expecting the room, but the state of it was indicative of the care taken over the whole property and just a bit weird.

Thank you for your feedback. We can confirm that the coffee machine and books were removed in view of Covid but were available by request - these have now been returned to the property, however, we have removed the food processor. We had never had a request for a shaver socket so will consider this. The problem with the drawers and the doors is a result of previous guests leaving wet towels over doors even though there is an electric towel rail in the bathroom. Thank you for your suggestion, but we believe there to be enough coat hangers available. Although we give both keys on arrival, we do say the bedroom door is a fire door so that guests don't use it as a general entrance just the kitchen door. We will provide details of where to find this key in the welcome notes provided. Also, there is a key in the patio door. We provide enough crockery and cutlery for 4 people which if all used along with saucepans fills a full-size dishwasher, we will also be providing a dish rack. There are a varied selection of utensils of good standard provided. The space is more than adequate as everything is spread out in the cupboards for visitors to then sort out, to suit their own requirements. Regarding the decoration it was nearing the end of a very busy season and paintwork is looking tired but as mentioned previously, our usual annual maintenance will begin soon. Your points made regarding cleaning have been noted, generally, our guests are happy with the cleanliness of our property. As agreed during your stay, the loose toilet seat was looked at and repaired during the following changeover. The spare room is just for storage and the door isn't locked as the fuse box is located for visitors’ convenience, but we will consider putting a lock on this door. We were happy to accept your pre-arranged food delivery before your arrival and as a courtesy, placed your items in the fridge for you. We hope we have addressed all of your points. Property Owner

Thank you for your feedback. We do not agree that the cottage is damp or smells of damp, especially as we had experienced such high temperatures recently, even for our summer. There are 3 large electric heaters available for our guests to use. Regarding the lack of views mentioned, there is one over open fields from the patio. Property Owner

It is just a short drive into St.Just which is well equipped with interesting shops and pubs. The cottages is situated near Lands End airport so has an added interest of occasional small planes going to and from the Isles of Scilly during the day. The cottage has a small secluded outside area that is a bit of a sun trap but overlooks fields with plenty of wild birds activity. The sunsets were good too. The cottage was very equipped with all essential equipment and was lovely and warm. Decent sized towels are provided. Fresh eggs and a cream tea made a lovely welcome gift. I’d definitely return.

  • "While we concur with others regarding things like cleanliness and comfort ."

There were certain areas we feel need addressing yes there were all the utensils needed on a self catering holiday, there was no cupboards for storing provisions. And the fact that there were no blinds in the kitchen means that you were blinded by the sun by day, and lacked privacy after dark. The net curtains in the living / dining area great during the day but inadequate at night.

About the location

ST JUST

Penzance 7.2 miles; St Ives 12.9 miles.

St Just is the nearest town to Land’s End and is situated approximately eight miles west of Penzance. The town itself is an ancient settlement that has a strong mining history and there are several monuments and prehistoric antiquities to visit including the Bronze Age settlement at Cape Cornwall. St Just is ideally located for visitors to explore the far west of Cornwall as it is situated on the edge of the moors and close to the beautiful north coast. In the centre of the town is Plain-an-Gwarry, a theatre used for miracle plays in medieval times, and in more recent times for the Lafrowda Festival.
