  • "We were pleased that our change of dates (from August 2021 to Octover half term 2021) could be accomodated and are grateful for that."

It did mean that we paid top, top Covid prices for our stay. I checked and even next August the price is still £500 lower. We wouldn't have minded too much if the house had been top spec but I am afraid it wasn't. The house is in a good location for exploring the local area and the surrounding areas have much to offer. Parts of the house are nice and well presented. However, the house does need attention, both inside and out. There is a damp issue in the bathroom which meant that mushrooms are growing on the floor. This troubled me a lot as mould spores can be dangerous. There was also an issue with lots of tiny black flies in the bathroom (drain flies) which then spread downstairs. This bothered me too as it felt unhygenic. We knew the road outside was unadopted and expected pot holes. We didn't expect a deep pond (no exaggeration) outside due to the heavy rain and lots of pooling water in holes in the road. The road was very difficult to navigate as a result. As others have mentioned, the mattress in the main bedroom was very saggy. There were no mattress protectors on the beds, just thin sheets. I wouldn't have expected this in a holiday rental. . We did enjoy our week away and the house has potential, but it does need some attention to bring it up to the 5* price we paid.

Thank you for your feedback. The reason for the lower price that week is due to school term dates. I can assure you the damp issue has now been fixed, and there are no signs of any black flies anywhere. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done about the road to the property. The mattresses have now been replaced and the cleaners always put mattress protectors on the pillows and mattresses. Property Owner

  • "I feel the property is overpriced for the area and the standard that is presented."

Being a local from Torpoint I know the area well and feel the prices are more justified of somewhere directly on the coast. Especially considering I was staying outside of the school holidays. Also, It’s not how it appears in the pictures, it’s very dated, old and tired looking with the exception of the kids bedroom and the second bedroom which lived up to expectation. I will say it was clean with the exception of 6 spiders living in the window frames around the kitchen. I feel like those could’ve been removed before we arrived. I asked well in advance for a baby cot which I was told would be at the property. It was not. I had to wait until the next day for it so that made for a sleepless night the first night of our stay. There are good facilities. The BBQ was a pleasant surprise. Dishwasher, washing machine, hoover, iron etc. The furniture is not comfortable. The bed in the main bedroom dips in the middle and creaks so badly you wake up every time you move. The sofas in the front room also not comfortable and have a smell of damp dog to them. The wooden chairs around the kitchen table dangerous, about to break! In fact one did whilst sitting on it. These were also old and tired. Having only Netflix and you tube on the television is disappointing too. The road outside is terrible. I know this from having lived in torpoint but I think it should be informed better on the listing. You can barely drive up it without risking some serious damage to your car. Overall we had a pleasant stay. But it’s overpriced for me and I would probably only consider staying again if it was reduced or renovated to a modern standard.

Thank you for your feedback. The pictures on the website are a true representation of the property. The property is not advertised as having a cot, only a highchair. The mattress will be replaced in the next couple of weeks. The damp dog smell will be discussed with the housekeeper. The wooden chairs will be checked and replaced if found to be broken or damaged. The Smart TV has Netflix and Amazon but doesn’t have terrestrial reception, we made a slight amendment to the wording to advise future guests of this. It does state on both the website and in the information we send to guests prior to their booking, that the property is located on an unadopted road and that it may not be suitable for vehicles with a low chassis. • "The house at Sydney Road was comfortable and clean but there were a few minor things that we were not happy with."

We were not made aware of the fact that the owners had no TV licence and therefore we could not watch BBC1, BBC2 ITV etc. I know we were on holiday and not there to sit and watch tv all day but it is always nice to get up in the morning and catch up on the news and after we have been out at night to come back to watch Tv.It would have been good to have that option. There was also no radio in the house to use as an option. There was also no clock in the house.

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad to hear you found Harbour View to be comfortable and clean. We do state in the description of the property: smart TV with Netflix & Amazon but no terrestrial reception. Property Owner

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad to hear you enjoyed the house. We are sorry that you were disappointed that there was no BBC channels in the property. We do state in the description: smart TV with Netflix & Amazon but no terrestrial reception. Property Owner

  • "I don’t like to be negative about the property but despite contacting Sykes twice about my concerns, they have not given me any response and seeing as it has now been 12 weeks since our return, I'm guessing they're not going to."

Harbour View certainly had it's good points; it was very clean and the kitchen was well equipped and the house was in a good location for exploring, particularly being so close to the ferry terminal. However, it certainly was not ‘excellent throughout’ as per Sykes' rating and we were all very disappointed and really felt that their details oversold the property. Our main issues were: The unadopted road - we arrived in heavy rain, to be greeted by the unadopted road. Sykes' information states that this road may not be suitable for cars with low chassis. This does not cover how bad the road is. The puddle was as wide as the road and at least 3 car lengths long and it was not possible to see how deep it was nor what was at the bottom of it. There are also further very deep potholes towards the other end of the road. This made it impossible for me to park on Sydney Road at all (and I do not have a car with a low chassis). It was hard work carrying all our belongings the length of the road. The front exterior - Then when we arrived at the property, we were greeted with huge weeds in the front garden and debris on the top step. Not very welcoming. The interior - The kitchen and twin back bedroom are very overlooked and would benefit from blinds. The bathroom also needs a blind as there is no window covering and it is overlooked by both the back bedroom and next door. The shower curtain also needs replacing as it is covered in mould. The twin bedroom does not have enough storage. There is one chest of drawers – 3 drawers are not enough to accommodate two people’s clothes – and indeed myself and my friend lived out of our cases all week. It would also benefit from a mirror. Beds and bedding - The beds and mattresses in the twin room are not ‘excellent’, the mattresses are very soft and creak with every move. Also, the bedding in the twin and the master bedroom did not smell fresh. This may be the actual pillows, but there was definitely a damp odour. The back yard - Like all the rear of the property it is very overlooked. It was full of weeds like the front garden. The table itself was filthy; my friend had to go and wash after just leaning on it. It is not possible to wipe it down as it is wooden and rough. We were only able to use it after covering it with blankets first. And finally, Sykes' description that ‘further green space can be found just opposite the house in Thanckes Park’ is very misleading. Firstly, ‘further green space’ suggests that there is green space at the property – this is not the case. And families should be aware that Thanckes park is not opposite the house – opposite the house is all bungalows with no sign of the park at all - the park is via a path at the end of the Road. Apologies for the rant but we were all sadly disappointed with the house and even more with Sykes' lack of response to our concerns.

Thank you very much for feeding back and bringing these issues to our attention. A lot of the issues you highlight, we have already fixed and also raised them with the cleaners who should have picked up on these without the need to have them pointed out! The listing does state it is a terraced house, as a result of which the garden is overlooked. You are absolutely right about the access road and we will make sure to update the information to more accurately highlight the state of it as guests are well aware of what to expect. Property Owner

  • "This was a great period property which was well equipped and clean."

It was well situated and the ferry across to Plymouth was great, we enjoyed nipping across in the evening to get to King William Yard for delicious meals . The unmade Road outside was a bit of a bugbear but nothing major.

  • "This house is fantastic: super clean, tastefully decorated, plenty of space, comfortable furniture, loads of equipment and fast Wi-fi."

It’s very close to Plymouth for evenings out in Royal William Yard or the Barbican, yet the right side of the Tamar to get to the beaches of this undiscovered south east part of Cornwall. If you like walking then you have coastal paths and moors just a stones throw away.

  • "The place is excellent."

Well presented and loads of space. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped. The dinning room is lovely and living room has loads of space and wonderful views. The bedrooms are also spacious and well presented. Loads of books and games to play. We loved the place and would come back. It is worth mentioning areas which could be improved. The mattress in the main bedroom needs replacing, no bedside lamps in the second bedroom and the TV is internet only. All minor things.

About the location

TORPOINT

Wilcove 1.3 miles; Antony 3.2 miles; Whitsand Bay 5.7 miles.

Torpoint is a town and civil parish on the Rame Peninsula in southeast Cornwall. It is an eighteenth-century planned town, with the grid-based design having been commissioned by Reginald Pole Carew in 1774. His family continue to have a strong influence in the area, having become the Carew Poles in the twentieth century, and still reside at their family seat, Antony House. Torpoint only became a town in the early nineteenth century. Before this, the nearby village of Antony was the main centre in the area. The area is home to an array of gardens, museums, pubs and restaurants - with surf schools boat trips, cliff top walking and cycling for the more active types. Let's not forget some of the finest historic houses on display and open to the public to explore. Torpoint is a wonderful town with plenty of activities and sightseeing opportunities - you will not want to miss this.
