  • "The cottage was in a fantastic, quiet location with gorgeous countryside views."

The kitchen was well equipped and the upstairs rooms were clean and comfortable. Unfortunately, however, the rest of the cottage was dirty and in need of updating. Cobwebs hung from every ceiling and light fitment, behind radiators and in corners, there was dirt and bits left in the sink, and, most worryingly, the toilet had human excrement down the side. The driveway was also covered in dog muck, which was trodden into the stones and across the step to the gate. There was also a sticky stain on the floor in the conservatory and the rugs by the entrance to the property were grubby. The whole place really needed a thorough blitz to be brought up to an acceptable standard. We contacted Sykes about the issue who asked the owner to send the cleaner back out to put things right. After initially telling us that she was unavailable, they eventually did send the cleaner back to the cottage but she only stayed 10 minutes and barely touched the list of issues we had presented. She must have brushed away two cobwebs, told me she couldn’t see any dirt in the sink and, although she said she would go to the shop and get some white spirit to clean the sticky stain up, just decided to pull one of the rugs over it to make it ‘disappear’ instead! She then asked me if I had any doggy bags to clear the muck from the drive and I thought she was at least going to fix this problem, but then she picked up her keys and started to leave the property! It was then I realised that she was expecting me to do it. She did pick up a couple of bits eventually but told me to boil a kettle and get rid of the rest myself. During discussions, it became very clear that both the cleaner and the owner of the cottage thought that these cleanliness issues were not their responsibility. We were told that there was no point in cleaning the cobwebs away as the spiders would just make more, and that other people who walk their dogs in the area are allowing them to foul the private driveway. Maybe that’s true, but that doesn’t mean it can just be left there for the guests themselves to have to pick up! When you book holiday accommodation you don't expect to have to clean the accommodation when you arrive to make it safe and suitable for your family to stay in! Sykes, were very good at communicating between us and the owners of the cottage but were ultimately powerless to help beyond passing messages on. They agreed that the cottage was not at an acceptable standard and told us that we really should have been able to receive some compensation, especially for the first night during which time we had to clean the cottage ourselves to make it fit for purpose. However, when the owners refused this, they told us that there was nothing further they could do. A really disappointing stay and not up to the standard of other holiday accommodation in the area.

Unfortunately we have to say that many of the comments made by Amanda do not accurately reflect the situation as conveyed by our conversation with Amanda herself, by our agent or by our trusted housekeeper of many years, and the photographic evidence provided does not in any way support the depth of the allegations. Our housekeeper has won many plaudits for the care and attention that she lavishes on this lovely old cottage. When our housekeeper attended to deal with the matters raised Amanda expressed herself happy with the minor rectifications that our housekeeper carried out. We are sorry that this character cottage did not suit Amanda. Property Owner

Central location for visiting all popular tourist attractions and to explore lesser known areas. A little gem for peace and quiet, local amenities including pub a short drive away. I’m sure some great walks in the local area not explored this visit. Owner contactable and very friendly if required. Well worth a stay if you want countryside. A quiet lane runs up the side of the cottage which is great for walking dogs. I would stay here again.

  • "We stayed for 14 nights."

This cottage has a lovely location and is very quiet. Fairly well equipped. Beds were comfortable and the Conservatory and excellent place to sit. However we felt the cleanliness let it down. when we arrived there was a musty smell in the house as if it had been shut up for a while, and there was a lots of dusty areas and cobwebs around. The countertops in both the kitchen and utility area were very sticky to the touch. I therefore spent the first evening dusting and wiping down the surfaces. Once this was done however we were able to enjoy our time here and the musty smell did clear with the windows open. The other issue is that the phone signal here for O2 is non existent but we were able phone call and text using the Wi-Fi. Calling. We did enjoy our stay and the lovely area and coves we visited made for a lovely holiday. Recommend the Halfway House on the main road to Helston, lovely food, also Pandora Inn great location. would not recommend the New Inn , tried twice to book but staff were rude so did not try 3rd time

Sorry to hear we didn’t meet your expectations on cleanliness. If you had let us know at the time, our housekeeper could have returned to remedy any deficiencies. It seems that the unusually wet weather brought forward the start of the spider season and although many were re-homed out of doors a few will return sometimes. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Cornwall and enjoyed some of its many delights. Property Owner

One of the best stocked kitchens I have ever seen, you could quite easily cater for more visitors and a lovely welcome gift. If you did fancy a drink it's around 20mins stroll to the New inn. The facilities were also fantastic as the washing machine came in very useful with the little one, we highly recommend this lovely cottage

Eldamar Cottage was simply a home-from-home. It was so well equipped and comfortable. We did not realise that it was so remote from the village but, that said, it was perfect for a peaceful getaway. It was just so quiet and exactly what we needed after all the lockdowns and restrictions we have all had recently. We went out and about in the locality: Falmouth, Redruth, Penryn and even found a wonderful place called Durgan where there is a beautiful collection of bays and beaches. We normally stay on the other coastline (St Ives, Perranporth, St Agnes, etc) and have not stayed on "this side" before. Our grandson is attending Falmouth University so that was why we originally booked Eldamar Cottage, to be near him to visit, but we discovered all sorts of lovely places to go in addition. We can highly recommend Eldamar Cottage to everyone. Please do book it to stay, it has everything you could ever need. There is even a huge Asda about 4 minutes drive away to stock up on your food and drink!!

One of the walls has mould on it and the picture above the bed also. I spent the week on the sofa as I couldn't bare being in a damp room with my asthma. The kitchen had crumbs on the surface by the bread bin and toaster on our arrival. You can't close the conservatory windows so another damp unusable room as water collects on the window sills when it rains, I booked the cottage for this room as my son has autism and won't sit in the same room as others so he spent the week in his room.

We are sorry to hear that you have experienced some issues with our holiday home. If only you had made us aware during your stay we may have been able to address your concerns. Our housekeeper normally receives very good comments about her work, but it would seem that an oversight has occurred which we will address. In respect of the reported musty smell we recently replaced the old draughty wooden sash windows with new high performance windows. The old windows allowed the cottage to breathe rather too much! Perhaps the new ones have tipped the balance the other way, and we will address this. The timber framed single glazed garden annexe is a traditional structure which moves with the weather and was never intended to be insulated or sealed to the same standards as a house. Our recommendation (as stated in the cottage manual) is to always leave the fanlight windows open slightly to ventilate. As with everything in life there are always trade-offs. Eldamar Cottage is our dream holiday home. It is a beautiful traditional, characterful solid granite Cornish building, and there will always be some negative aspects to this in comparison to a modern property, which need to be borne in mind. • "We really enjoyed our holiday at Eldamar Cottage."

The cottage was well equipped and very clean and everything was as described. The only issue I felt was that the owner is very keen on recycling, which is fine. However when we arrived it was made clear that there would be only one rubbish collection (on the Monday after we arrived) and after that we were responsible for taking any further rubbish, from the last 5 days of our holiday, to the local recycling point and if we did not do that we should remove it from the premises when we left. (No rubbish was to be left on the premises when we departed). We have never come across this policy before in any of the many properties we have stayed in. We are also keen on recycling but feel it is asking a bit much to be expected to dispose of our own rubbish. We, of course are happy to bag and bin our rubbish but do not feel happy about being expected to take our own rubbish to the dump. This was definitely not shown to be part of "the deal" when we booked the cottage and if we had been aware we would probably not booked it. I have since spoken to the owner about this and I believe she will be contacting you to put something on your website.

Thank you for your kind comments regarding Eldamar Cottage. We have now been able to engage a local contractor to provide a rubbish and recycling collection service. Property Owner
