  • "As I said in the visitor's book, we enjoyed our stay in this 300 year old cottage with all mod cons."

It's tricky backing a large car up to the garage and I was pleased to have managed it without scratches! There are many positives, but if I owned it I think the poor lighting in the lounge could be improved without spoiling its character. If we weren't 85 and struggling with stairs, we'd come again!

Thank you David. We will take on board your comments about the lighting. As you say being an old cottage May’s has had to adapt itself to modern living in all its forms. It is good to know that you feel there are many positives. Without our guests owning May’s would not be possible so we are grateful. Kind regards Lesley Property Owner

We had a small issue with the kettle not working properly and this was dealt with in less than a hour .weve had one of the best cornish holiday and will definitely return to may's cottage and recommend to other thank you Lesley for a wonderful holiday.

Ideally positioned some 5 miles from Padstow, within easy reach of beaches, great coastal walks, scenic harbours, Tintagel Castle etc. We dined out at one of many Rick Stein establishments, but must mention’Fresh from the Sea’ at Port Isaac. Outstanding crab and Lobster. The house is spacious, has a great layout and beautiful garden. Thoughtful outside shower for dogs or sandy children! We loved it!

The cottage is in a great location for Padstow and the nearby beaches- excellent for families wanting to be near the sea! Really well equipped property and a very homely feel. The drive is very tight if you have a large car, and we did have to all get out at the roadside before my husband reversed the car into the drive- that being said, we do have a large car (Skoda Kodiaq). Overall a thoroughly enjoyable week and lovely cottage! Thank you. Jennie

  • "Mays cottage was perfect."

We were 2 families who had never holidayed together before but the cottage was big enough for everyone to have their own space as well as room for us to all be together when required. The only thing that was an issue, was there are sleeping arrangements for 8 people there are only 6 chairs around the table (we borrowed a chair from outdoors so all 7 of us could sit together for a meal) and it would be useful to have a few more bits of crockery as we sometimes ran out as they were in the dishwasher from the previous meal. Washing machine and tumbledryer were a godsend, as was the small tv in the kids room as it gave them their own space to chill out away from the adults. The welcome package was a lovely gesture even including treats for our dog, who was a late addition as she wasn't part of our family when we booked, but the owners were excellent when we enquired about bringing her along. Thanks again for a great holiday.

We are so pleased that you all had a good time. We keep some extra chairs on the landing for guests use around the table or anywhere else that you would like to use them. We chose to position them up stairs to give you and your pets a little more room to manoeuvre in the kitchen. We do have some extra plates etc in the kitchen but perhaps we can try and squeeze some more in! For your information there are also some spares in the dresser in the sitting room. We hope to welcome you back again and would like to say a very big thank you for watering our hydrangeas in their hour of need! Property Owner

The extra details were lovely too like the cream scones which were delicious and the tea and shortbread (such a thoughtful gesture). Huge selection of DVDs and games for the evenings and beautiful garden which was fantastic for sitting in listening to the birds and great for the dogs too. Can’t thank you enough for a totally enjoyable holiday!

Gorgeous cosy lounge with very comfortable sofas/armchairs. Loved having the woodburner in the evening after dinner at the Ring O’ Bells which we highly recommend for very reasonably priced and tasty meals. Sun room is fab; great place to eat, socialise and play games after dinner. Great communication from the owner, Lesley and lovely welcome treats of cream tea, Cornish shortbread and tea bags, plus a tasty bag of dog treats that Ruby the JRT loved. A nice touch, thank you. Just a mention as someone said they couldn’t get their car in the drive; we have a later shape Toyota Rav 4 which is quite a large SUV and managed to back it in the driveway. Once you are in, the drive widens so you can get in and out easily.

We simply love everything about May's Cottage, from the doggie treats to all the other complementary things (especially the scones, jam and cream - always in that order for us). The owner, Lesley has created a wonderfully welcoming place to stay and use as a base to explore a Cornwall absolutely packed with things to do and places to visit. When we booked it said there was a village shop but on arrival the shop had closed and website has now changed details of this. Just meant a 5 min drive to Wadebridge or Padstow which wasn’t a problem. Due to Covid you had to book everywhere & couldn’t get in village pub so make sure u book with plenty of time if u want to do this. • "Amazing cottage in perfect location for getting around Cornwall."

I marked down as we found many cobwebs around the property and under the sofa cushions were lots of dirt and crumbs. The mattress on the double is also extremely lumpy and uncomfortable so didn’t sleep incredibly well. Overall though a beautiful cottage and we really enjoyed our stay.

We were so pleased to see the cottage described as “amazing”. However we were most disappointed to read about the cobwebs and crumbs. Unfortunately the cobwebs are a never ending battle with a 300 year old cottage but we would like to say that we are sorry that these issues occurred and we will address them. The mattress that is mentioned is being replaced, Lockdown permitting, before Christmas.  Property Owner

It was very well equipped and nicely decorated. We loved the garden and enjoyed bbq’s. We also loved the log fire, it was very cosy on some of the evenings. It was great having the outside shower for our dogs and the laundry facilities in the garage. It felt like a home from home and would highly recommend staying at Mays Cottage. However, I felt the staff at Sykes office were extremely unhelpful once i’d booked. The whole lay out of the cottage really suited us and having 3 bathrooms is definitely a plus. We loved sitting in the conservatory for our meals, it seemed to be sunny in there all day long! On a couple of the cooler evenings we enjoyed sitting in the very cosy sitting room. Location wise was great too, close to all the good beaches and Padstow and there's even a good bus service into Padstow for bored teenagers. • "We very much enjoyed May's cottage and our holiday there, but having stayed in Helpful Holidays cottages of 4 star rating over the last 25 years or so, we don't think that it's a 5 star property, probably 4, although it's not as immaculate or well equipped (particularly the kitchen) as, for example, Charlton Lodge (S42) where we've stayed 4 times."

I suppose it inevitably suffers somewhat from being looked after by a paid caretaker rather than the owners, the cleaning being superficial rather than thorough. The landing light ( lacking any shades !) was festooned with cobwebs as was the recess of the window on the stairs. We were unable to find any of the additional black bin liners referred to for rubbish disposal, but perhaps most unpleasantly, on our first morning, I found that, on using the double room en suite shower, the tray filled to the brim with water which didn't drain away until I'd removed a large mass of hair from under the drain cover. My wife and son also found hairs in the other shower and the bath downstairs. The bedroom with 4 bunks is very basic, rather tatty, and needs redecorating. Shame.
