  • "In November."

I booked a week in June and a week in September. Beds very uncomfortable Impossible to get a decent night's sleep. Complained to Sykes who spoke to the owner and said they were new memory foam mattress simply not true . I asked if I cancelled my week in September would I get a refund and was told I wouldn't so I had to return in September nothing had changed. Still complaints in the comments book about beds . Also no curtains in main bedroom or even a blackout blind. No handrail on stairs. Wouldn't stay again and wouldn't use Sykes either as girls attitude when I complained in June was poor . Expect better for £840 a week John

Thank you for your comments, I hope that you had an enjoyable stay in Looe, and will look into the issues that you have raised. On further investigation it was found that the light bulb on landing had blown which tripped the relay in the fuse box, new bulb and reset trip and now all working. Our Manager Darren who looks after the cottage is more than happy to deal with any issues that arise during your stay. So any problems please let him know. Property Owner

  • "Pros The cottage is conveniently located with easy access to West and East Looe and Hannafore as well as the local Spar and 72 and 73 bus stops."

The lane is generally quiet, and we were lucky and took advantage of the free parking space opposite the cottage. The rooms are spacious and clean when we arrived. Cons The cottage still has a number of damp patches. The dining area wall is particularly damp, as well as blistering of paint from the ceiling in the main bedroom. Despite previous responses that has been fixed, there is still a great deal of damp in the cottage and so much so we could never get our clothes to dry! Whilst tastefully decorated and furnished we found the wet room difficult to use as there is only a small space near the entrance that is not wet. Also the vinyl type wet room floor kept coming away from the tiles. It would have been helpful to have a freezer (even if a small freezer compartment at the top of the fridge).

Thank you for pointing out what you consider are a few issues, so that they may be dealt with as quick as is practical. I stayed in the cottage a couple of week before you with my grandchildren and I was certainly not aware of any issues that needed addressing, except the main dining room wall that I have explained below is booked in to be dealt with. I would like to point out that this cottage is over 200 years old and has solid stone walls with no cavity wall or damp proof course. In some places the wall is up to nearly 3 feet thick, the main wall in the dining rom that you reference is in fact 3ft thick, it was all scraped back before the season started and repainted, the problem with a cottage of this age is that over a period of time the salt content in the wall works its way to the surface and cause paint flaking, blemishes and crusting. This wall has been booked in to have all plaster removed back to stone and sealed then dry-lined and re-plastered and redecorated at the beginning of October. We have recently installed 2 power full humidity controlled cyclone fans after a survey by envirovent suggested that this would eliminate the humidity as is so suffered by cottages in the West Country due to the solid stone walls. The reference to the wet room flooring I will pass on to Darren our local manager and builder, who I am sure will let me know and if there is a problem and he will sort it out. With reference to a freezer compartment in the fridge, it was felt that as the local Spar shop is only 100 yards away the limited space in the kitchen would be better served with a larger fridge compartment. I find it very difficult to believe that you were unable yo get your clothes dry because the cottage was so damp. We are in fact in the middle of an exceptional period of very hot and dry weather. There is a washing line in the courtyard and an airer is also provided for drying clothes. I hope that despite the issues that you have kindly pointed out you had a lovely time in Looe and the surrounding areas. Property Owner

  • "Bay tree cottage is a lovely cottage but what is putting us off booking for this ..."

Bay tree cottage is a lovely cottage but what is putting us off booking for this year is the damp problem in the cottage upstairs bedroom had visible damp patches that got worse through the week and twin bedded room had damp running down the wall and down stairs wall as you enter the property had flaking walls which got worse as the week went on such a shame for a lovely cottage and paying £800 you wouldn't expect this sorry to complain but feel we should let future guests know, cottage had some lovely features and when this problem is fixed it will be perfect

Bay Tree Cottage has recently been inspected by a specialist company called Environment who concluded that special cyclone extractor fans which monitor the humidity levels were needed to be fitted in the bathroom and the kitchen, this has been dealt with and also the property has recently been redecorated in all the affected areas. Thank you for your feedback. On Saturday during the change over it was brought to our attention that there was an issue with some staining and damp patches in the upstairs bedrooms. Our local Manager has arranged for a roofing contractor to come out and sort the problem out immediately. The property

Resting in the centre of West Looe, the quieter side of the river, and close to a host of local amenities and a glorious sandy beach is Bay Tree Cottage, a traditional and charming fisherman's cottage, ideal for a couple or small family looking for a seaside escape in this bustling fishing port.

Steeped in history, the cottage is believed to have been built in the late 1800s and owned by a warrant officer in the Royal Navy, and used as a post by the Home Guard during the Second World War.

Step inside the property to discover an inviting sitting room, with stunning slate flooring, a charming feature fireplace and a large sofa to rest on as you enjoy your favourite films on the Smart TV, while the arm chair is placed beside the window, offering an ideal spot to curl up with a good book as the heat of the sun washes over you.

The contemporary and bright kitchen is well-equipped to enable you to cook delicious home-cooked meals, with a feature white stone wall brightening the space, ample wooden worktop space to prep ingredients and even a handy dishwasher to take care of any washing up.

Enjoy meals in the dining room, which comfortably seats four, as you catch up on the day's events and make plans for the remainder of your stay.

The ground-floor wet-room is tiled in sleek white and makes the space feel bright and spacious, with a walk-in shower allowing you to prepare for each day, there's even a heated towel rail for added comfort.

Catch up on rest upstairs in one of two neutrally-styled, spacious bedrooms; a double bedroom with a wall-mounted TV and built in wardrobe and a good-sized twin with a TV and plenty of storage space, ideal for younger guests.

Parking is available roadside on a first come, first served basis and you are just minutes' walk away from the centre of Looe and a host of amenities, restaurants, pubs and bars.

Visit the Heritage Centre, housed in the former Sardine Factory, and offers a climbing wall and a café to grab a snack and a cup of coffee.

Walkers will delight in exploring the nearby Kilminorth Woods, offering hiking trails along the river and the Giant's Hedge circular walk.

Children will enjoy fishing at Mill Pool, which runs alongside the river and has plenty of small fish and crabs to try and find.

Enjoy the picturesque outlook across the harbour, before crossing the famous seven arched bridge, or taking a river taxi across the Looe River towards the bustling East Looe, with its narrow cobbled streets and mysterious winding alleyways, as well as a stunning sandy beach adjoining the pier, popular with families due to its safe shallow water for swimming.

Head to Banjo Pier, Looe's lookout point, to observe fishing boats returning to the bay, as well as being able to see out to Looe Island, which can be walked to at low tide and is a haven for a variety of wildlife.

Pick up some fresh fish for dinner at the thriving fish market, stop off for a refreshing beverage at the 16th century Jolly Sailor Inn, one of Britain's oldest pubs, and pay a visit to the Old Guildhall Museum & Gaol, a small local history museum dating back hundreds of years.

For an adventurous day out, head to Adrenaline Quarry for a day of rock climbing, zip lines and even deep water swimming.

Venture along the Polperro Heritage Coastline, which encompasses the remarkable South West Coast Path, ideal for exploring on foot or bicycle, and explore the quaint fishing village of Polperro, with its idyllic beach, heritage museum and model village attraction, while further along the coast you will find the sheltered cove and nature reserve of the National Trust's Lantic Bay.

Further afield is the market town of Liskeard, as well as the magnificent countryside of Bodmin Moor and the Tamar Valley, the inspiration of many famous literary pieces.

Bay Tree Cottage is a wonderful base for a family-friendly coastal retreat to this exciting area of Cornwall.

About the location

LOOE

Polperro 5 miles.

Looe is Cornwall’s second largest fishing port and hence there is always a lively maritime bustle around the quay area of East Looe, which is connected to the quieter West Looe by a seven arched 19th century bridge over the River Looe. You can also catch the river taxi between East and West Looe. East Looe has narrow cobbled streets, twisting alleyways and plenty of tourist shops, whilst West Looe has a lovely outlook across the harbour. Looe’s viewpoint, Banjo Pier, can be reached from the quay and is a great spot to watch the returning fishing trawlers and look across the bay to Looe Island, which can be walked to occasionally at very low tides. The sandy Looe beach adjoins the pier and is very popular with families because of its safe shallow swimming and vast expanse of sand. There is also a great rock pool area at Hannafore that children will love. West Looe has a Heritage Centre that recently opened in the Old Sardine Factory with a climbing wall and a cafe and the delightful Kilminorth Woods have way marked walks through the majestic oak wood, rich in plant, insect and bird life. Apart from beach activities in this part of south east Cornwall, there are many mining remains on Bodmin Moor and in the Tamar Valley and much of the mining landscape has World Heritage status. This area of Cornwall has inspired writers, such as Daphne du Maurier and much of Bodmin Moor has inspired legends linked with King Arthur. There is much to explore in this beautiful part of Cornwall.
