  • "The cleanliness could have been better."

The oven was not used as it was terrible and so were the trays. The actual cabin was lovely .

  • "The cabin was better than expected."

Spotlessly clean and had everything that was required (even though there was a bit of a miss match of drinking glasses) but that was not going to spoil our holiday. The cabins were well screened from the others and they were therefore very quiet and private. Would recommend to any wanting a base to tour the wonderful villages and towns around Rutland Water as there is so much to see and do. Plenty of excellent restuarants, pubs and coffee bars serving some very very good food. Warning!! Once you have been you will definately want to return .

  • "The lodge was superb in all ways: comfort, decor, facilities, location."

The staff at The Barnsdale Lodge Hotel were also very good and helpful. The only query is that the TV in the Twin Bedded Room did not have a remote control and so could not be used. It was a different make to the other two TVs (Living Room and Main Bedroom) and so their remote controls were not compatible. I believe this is a matter to raise with the Owner.

  • "We noticed from the photographs, that the sofa was quite tight to seat three people, so that left a two plus one seating for four people in the evenings."

We asked on the off chance that we might get another single seat put in the cottage and to our surprise there was another sofa chair made available when we arrived - excellent service, five star. Also had a small problem on arrival, but the cottage manager resolved the problem within an hour - couldn't ask for more!!

  • "We had a really super week at Burley, a warm and comfortable retreat chalet."

Almost everything a person could want was there. We would certainly return. Unfortunately there were just 2 negative here, these being the kettle arrangement and relaxed seating arrangements. The hot water boiler for tea etc was not to our taste so we bought a kettle from the superstore, and there were a sofa and an arm chair for relaxed seating. 3 up on the sofa was a little squashed (none of us are large people). We asked for another arm chair, but recieved a throw away remark. I must emphasize that we had a really super week and look forward to returning. Thank you.

  • "Superb accommodation in beautiful setting - very much a ‘Scandi’ style retreat, with excellent security."

Ideal as a retreat from the everyday. Only complaint was that the beds are rock hard - which could easily be rectified. The level of quality of everything else was superb - these days, the comfort of beds should not be an issue, but it was here. Also, very good for dog owners - Barnsdale Lodge welcomes dogs.

  • "Loved our stay at Burley."

The accommodation was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The only thing was that the garden area wasn't enclosed so that the dog could wander on her own. A side from that we will definitely be booking again next year.

  • "The lodge organised through Sykes was just as described and had everything we expected, but the second bedroom notified as a twin, we found on on arrival was made up as a double."

This was resolved by the local Hotel staff quickly and simply, but they commented that they normally were advised, but in this case no instruction was given. This did not spoil our stay in any way, just feedback in case the booking process could be improved in that respect. Otherwise, the overall booking process was simple and straightforward, communications and information was clear and we had a great stay in a really good location. Thank you.

About the location

EXTON, RUTLAND

Stamford 7.8 miles; Melton Mowbray 14.4 miles

Exton offers a typical English village setting, with its traditional, stone buildings crowded around the green, in the East Midlands county of Rutland. The Fox and Hounds public house overlooks the tree-planted green, a former 17th century coaching inn, oozing with character, offering cosy winter evenings around the fireplace and lazy summer days out in the beer garden. To the south of the village are Barnsdale Gardens, created by Geoff Hamilton for the BBC's Gardeners' World, and the Barnsdale Hall Hotel and Country Club. Oakham is the nearest town, boasting a combination of stone and thatched buildings, a range of shops, as well as pubs, bars and eateries to choose from. There is also a local history museum, a 12th century castle and a 14th century church. The Rutland Water Nature Reserve offers watersports, a small water adventure park, birdwatching, a sailing club and fishing opportunities, with the Rutland Water Golf Course overlooking the lake. The train station provides access to the cities of Nottingham and Leicester with shops to browse and architecture to admire. The market town of Stamford is a mere stone's throw away, with its attractive Georgian-style buildings used in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice film, independent shops, cosy pubs and a range of restaurants. Melton Mowbray is further afield, with more amenities to explore. Home to the famous pork pie, this town also offers The Regal Cinema, Melton Theatre and the Melton Carnegie Museum. The village of Exton offers a warm and friendly atmosphere for the perfect holiday exploring the East Midlands.
