  • "The cottage was a little gem set in a beautiful rural location with easy access to all the places of interest in Wiltshire."

The cottage met all our needs and Tom, our host, was always on hand to answer questions about the area and generally chat without being intrusive. It was a very nice touch to leave eggs, milk and butter in the fridge. Shortly after our arrival Tom brought us a freshly baked loaf of organic bread. We will gladly stay there again.

  • "A very cosy barn conversion perfect for two people."

For autumn evenings comfy chairs, a log fire and smart television. For breakfast there was a Roberts radio ready for the morning news with our porridge. The only thing missing was a milk jug for our tea so we found one in the local charity shop and left it there for future visitors.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay. It's a great hidden little gem and a wonderful starting point to explore the area. We hope to welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner

About the location

CLYFFE PYPARD

Avebury 5 miles, Royal Wootton Bassett 6 miles, Marlborough 10 miles.

Clyffe Pypard most likely derives its name from the ancient English word 'cleeve' meaning cliff and Pypard from a 13th century resident Richard Pipard.
There has been a church at Clyffe Pypard since the 13th century. The present nave and west tower of the Church of England parish church are 15th-century
Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, the German-born British scholar of history of art and, especially, of history of architecture, described St Peter's as "in a lovely position below a wooded stretch of the cliff". Pevsner and his wife are buried in the churchyard.
RAF Clyffe Pypard was a Royal Air Force training station about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Royal Wootton Bassett, on high ground south of Clyffe Pypard village. The airfield opened in 1941 with grass runways about 1300 yards long and temporary accommodation under RAF Flying Training Command. It closed in 1947 but was used after this date by RAF Lyneham for accommodation and by the British Army for battle practice until 1961. The airfield is currently farmland with only a small number of buildings left standing.
The most striking topographical feature of Clyffe Pypard Parish is the north-west facing chalk escarpment, which stretches right across the parish, dividing the clay vale to the North from the Lower Chalk below the Marlborough Downs to the South. The community is situated approximately 5 miles North-west of Avebury (World Heritage Site), approximately 10 miles West of Geogian market town Marlborough and about 6 miles East of Royal Wootton Bassett.
