  • "As regular users of Sykes for our holiday breaks, this is the first time we have been disappointed."

There were numerous issues, toaster not working, kettle dirty and full of limescale, microwave dirty, front door mat filfthy, no hot water downstairs, we boiled kettle to do washing up. The biggest issue was that the property was just shabby and in dire need of a really good clean and some tlc. We did not bring this to the owners attention as there was nothing they could do to fix things without us having to move out. At no time did we feel comfortable during the stay.

It is clearly a personal choice not to raise an issue with us as the owners living next door or during the interactions we had during your stay, and instead choose to save it all up for a crushingly awful review. Firstly, let me say that our cleaning company was recommended by Sykes and there is nothing to suggest that they treat us differently to all the other Sykes cottages they clean. I will however share your review with them and draw their attention to the microwave which had clearly been missed. I have now cleaned it. The City of Bath is famous for its mineral rich waters but it means that limescale is a constant companion for those of us who live here. The kettle is usually replaced every 2 yrs. If you had mentioned this during your stay I would have provided a new kettle immediately. On reading your review I immediately checked that the hot water is working fine which it is. Again, if you had mentioned that you were having issues I would happily have explained its workings to you. February has been exceptionally wet, and the welcome mat has clearly been working harder than vacuuming could rectify. Again, had you chosen to mention this I would have done what I have now done, which is wash it, dry it on the Aga and get it back in the cottage within 3 hours. Finally, had you chosen to mention that you were having problems with the toaster I would have immediately purchased a new one or, as in this case, switched it on at the wall. We request that guests always let us know if there's anything we can do to help, for good reason. There is always a way to make things better, so that everyone can enjoy their stay at Barrow Mead. Kind regards The Owner Property Owner

  • "We had a really good week at Barrow Mead."

The cottage has everything needful (and we did all our own cooking and spent quite a lot of time just chilling with our grown up children, so we really lived there, not treating it just as a bed for the night!) The absolute beauty of the place is its situation right on the edge of the city, but with the fields all around......To turn in the gateway and down the lane is to enter a different, peaceful world; a very welcome one as we are not city people! If we had a niggle, it would be the dormer window in our bedroom....the ceiling angle caught my husband on the head more times than he would care to remember.....fortunately no real damage done! Oh, and another middle-sized saucepan would be a great help....sometimed we cooked for two in huge pans. Thank you Louise and Matt for providing such a peaceful space.

Thank you for your comprehensive feedback. We are delighted that you and your family had a wonderful stay. We have passed your suggestions onto the owner. We hope we can welcome you back again. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

  • "The cottage is very well maintained, comfortable, attractive in a lovely, quiet yet convenient spot near the park and ride into Bath."

However instructions on how to alter the heating ( it was too cold the first evening and blasted out heat in the bedrooms over night.) I couldn't fathom how to alter it and had to trouble the owner. Also keeping the log burner alight was problematical and you need to experiment with the settings. Again no instructions given. These are crucial in December. A tea cosy would be nice as would a glove for the log burner. This may seem nit-picking but would have made our visit perfect rather than just very good. I would stay here again and recommend to anyone wanting a stay near Bath.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We have passed your suggestions onto the owner. We are pleased that you had a comfortable stay and enjoyed being within easy reach of the lovely city of Bath. We hope we can welcome you back again. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

Great location for site seeing. The cottages kitchen was well equipped, and the beds were comfortable. The owners are great, very helpful, and no question too big. The only little thing that may annoy other guests is the double bedroom door doesn't close, and the shower isn't very powerful as it's electric.

Thank you for your feedback with regards to your stay at The Cottage at Barrow Mead. It's great to hear you enjoyed your stay and thank you for the feedback. We will pass on your comments to the Owner for review and he hope to welcome you again very soon. Kind regards Manor Cottages. Property Owner

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with such lovely feedback on your stay. The cottage sits at the end of a private lane in a private and tranquil setting. The cottage is an ideal location for peace and quiet after the frenzy of the city and the owners of the cottage have made every effort to make your stay as pleasant as possible including a very useful welcome box with the best natural apple juice I have tasted, all in all we spent a very enjoyable and peaceful holiday week.

Close to shops and city centre of Bath, yet relaxingly quiet and in a gorgeously green setting. Friendly hosts who provide an ‘impressive’ welcome basket - the locally produced apple juice is wonderful! Ideally located for visiting a large variety of cities and other places of interest, as well as for going on walks in beautiful landscapes. In short: absolutely recommended! Thanks for a more than lovely holiday!

Friendly welcome by the owners who were also easy to reach for questions during our stay. The basic outside seating area with a fabulous view is a good extra.

There's a grassed area overlooking fields, with a table and chairs for the use of the cottage occupants. We couldn't believe just how quiet it is, considering it's quite close to local amenities. At night all we could hear were owls. The owners were very friendly and accomodating too. All in all, very highly recommended. We'd stay again if we're in the area.

We also visited Bristol twice which is about 10 miles away. Once in the cottage you wouldn't think you were so close to town as it was very quiet and surrounded by fields. The cottage itself was very well equipped with everything we could possibly need. The owner was very welcoming and friendly, we were greeted with local apple juice and eggs from his chicken on our arrival which was lovely. However this may not be the property for you if you are very afraid of spiders as lots seemed to find their way in, especially upstairs!

Despite the summary on the Sykes site, it is still astonishing that the place can be so close to a busy road in a city and yet feel so remote. From the sunny window upstairs the views across the countryside give no indication of the metropolis nearby. Can't hear it either. Park & Ride is just a few minutes drive away and free to use for us ancients with concessionary pass. There are pleasant walks from the cottage and the owners are very friendly and helpful. Perfect.

The Cottage At Barrow Mead!

When we visited this delightful cottage, we couldn't believe it is where it is and that you are actually IN Bath, well actually you're not, it's just that you are near the centre but you look out across open countryside!!

As you pass through Bath, you suddenly find this little lane running alongside a school approximately 1/2 mile later and you're in the middle of nowhere, overlooking the rolling countryside of the southern Cotswolds.

Hikers, birdwatchers and those in search of peace are just as likely to enjoy this super cottage as are those looking for culture, shops and a gastronomic experience, given its proximity to the heart of Bath, which is just 15 minutes away in the bus or car.

Inside, the open plan ground floor gives a real sense of space which, with the woodburning stove, is just as welcoming and snug in winter as it is cool and inviting in summer.

The private garden area overlooking the orchard and rolling countryside offers a super hideaway, while listening to birdsong.

A little piece of heaven in Bath.
