"A home-from-home property with everything you need for an extended stay."
We were grateful for the warm welcome, cake and helpful literature supplied by the owner, including lots of ideas for places to visit. Timsbury offers many walks around the village and its interesting & picturesque surroundings and is perfectly located to explore North Somerset and the cities of Bath, Bristol & Wells.
"A lovely old cottage with large gardens and good parking."
Minor maintenance issues which the owner is aware of and looking to correct. With 2ft thick walls and nothing being square we were nevertheless quite cosy and enjoyed our stay very much. Kitchen well equipped and the welcome tray with homemade cake a nice surprise.
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Crooked Well cottage (the picturesque Well is in the garden)."
It's in the perfect spot to explore North Somerset and nearby counties. Beautiful Bath is easily reached from the park and ride relatively close by and there is much to see in Wells and Bristol - only a short drive away. The surrounding area of Timsbury also has some lovely walks. The cottage has all the facilities needed and is immaculately kept. It's cosy, comfortable and the homemade cake on arrival was delicious. Many thanks
Such a lovely review, thank you so much. I do appreciate you taking the trouble to write this, as I have been having lovely comments in my guest book but hardly any reviews. It was also lovely to meet you upon arrival, and my family also said that they had enjoyed meeting you too during your week. My late husband built the well over the hole in the ground in 1979, but the well itself was closed by a concrete slab, which I discovered from Harry Patch's wonderful book, "The Last Fighting Tommy", was how the wells were prevented from being used once mains water was available. However, 'Crooked Well' actually relates to the home of my great-grandparents in Kington, Herefordshire. My mother said they were the happiest couple you could ever meet and when she retired, her home was to be called Crooked Well, so she was a bit put out when she discovered there really was a well in her garden! "We had a lovely stay here - great contact with the owner, a lovely cake to welcome us and a great location for getting to bath, longleat, wookey hole caves etc."
lovely village pub - stunning scenery and I would recommend this property to anyone including families - we had twin 7year olds and a 3 year old and they loved sharing a room and being in the big beds!
Thank you so much, I'm delighted that the children enjoyed Crooked Well too, it does seem to work for all age groups somehow. Of course there are so many interesting places around the area to visit with children as well as for adults, and I am glad that you enjoyed visiting some of them as a family. Property Owner
"A lovely cottage we particularly liked the crockery which included cups and saucers and not just mugs both the lounge and the bedroom were large with a lovely big double bed, also as the weather was good we were able to sit out in the garden."
Very pleased that you enjoyed your stay, and interesting to hear that you liked the china! I have always had a love of china, thanks to my Mother and my Grandmother, although of course my family think that's old fashioned and only mugs are needed, but I couldn't resist putting a bone china set in the cottage. I'm delighted that you enjoyed using it. Thank you. Property Owner
"A lovely well equipped cottage in a quiet little corner of the village but a short walk from the shops."
. Lovely to have our own parking spot on the drive..as opposed to road parking. Settees comfy..lots of towels colour coded provided ..in fact the cottage has been very thoughtfully fitted out. Nice little garden & we loved the garden seats so Much we bought one once we returned home. Well placed for all towns of Bath, Bristol & Wells..a great holiday!
Thank you for your thoughtful review, much appreciated. I'm glad you had a good holiday and that you enjoyed the garden. I have wanted to update the garden photos because it is prettier now there is more growth, but every week it sems to rain on Fridays! Property Owner
"The cottage is in a fantastic location and is well equipped with everything you'd need."
We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others.
Than you so much for your enthusiastic review, I'm so happy that your stay was all you hoped it would be. The beautiful weather would have helped you to enjoy the beauty of Bath on your first visit, I'm sure. It was a pleasure to meet you, albeit very briefly. Property Owner
"Great period property in a lively and welcoming village."
Well equipped for a family stay. It is close to the sites of Bath and Bristol making a great base to explore.
Pleased that you enjoyed your stay in the village, and hope your little daughter had a good time on her holiday. Thank you for leaving the cottage clean. Property Owner
"Crooked Wells was amazing."
The cottage had everything you could need and more. Perfect base to visit places we had not been to before. The cake was delicious, and we somehow managed to make it last The week. Will have no hesitation recommending Crooked Wells to friends and family.
Thank you so much for your kind review and for taking the trouble to write it, also for leaving the cottage well. There are such lovely places to visit in that interesting area of the country, as you obviously discovered. I'm amazed at how many guests comment kindly on my cake! I will send the recipe as requested, by text. Property Owner
"It was a lovely cottage - very comfortable and a real home from home."
We had a great stay and the cottage is in a perfect location for exploring the local area. It was brilliant to be able to walk to the local pub as well!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the local area and appreciate your leaving the cottage well Property Owner
"A superbly equiped, clean, comfortable cottage in a quiet location."
A welcome tray was greatfully received especially the delicious fruitcake. The brief visit from the owner, was lovely and gave us interesting background information about the cottage, the well and its history. It was nice to know the owners family were nearby, should we need them. The local fish and chip shop was superb, with the best cod and chips we've ever had! We had some good days out exploring Bath, Bristol, Wells and surrounding areas. Had the weather been better it would have been nice to make use of the garden of an evening. We thoroughly enjoyed the cosy comfort of the cottage and can happily recommend it to others.
The fish and chip shop proprietors were delighted to hear your praise! A pity about the weather; as you discovered this is a good area for wet weather tourist activities! The cotttage was left so nicely, thank you. Property Owner
"We had a super time at the cottage and if we were visiting the area again would definitely come back."
It was so well appointed and clean, we loved it.
Thank you for a lovely review, I'm delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your stay, and grateful to you for leaving the cottage so well. Property Owner
"Lovely well equipped and clean property in a nice quiet location."
Could not fault it at all, highly recommended.
So pleased Crooked Well came up to your expectations, thank you very much. Your leaving the cottage so carefully looked after was appreciated too. Property Owner
"A lovely cottage, very comfortable with excellent supplies of all you need (such as washing up liquid, kitchen towel etc) including the very welcoming tea and cake!"
Superb supply of books, no need to bring your own, dvds etc. The information provided was very good, especially interesting to read of the history of the cottage and the village. The garden is a suntrap, we even managed to sit out one day! Parking great. The location is convenient for Bath and surrounding towns and Timsbury has a lovely Coop with such friendly and helpful staff, just literally up a path and round the corner from Crooked Well. We can recommend the fish and chips, also very close and the pub. Our thanks to Mrs Mudge for her welcoming phone call about arriving early, it gave us an extra afternoon in Bath. We would thoroughly recommend this cottage.
Such a generous review, thank you so much. I'm delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your break; I will pass on your praise to the hardworking staff in the the Coop and Our Plaice and The Seven Stars. It's lovely to be bringing much appreciated custom to businesses in the village having lived in it for 40 years, because we are lucky to have them when so many communities have lost their local traders. May I thank you for leaving the cottage immaculately, and I certainly look forward to your returning one day. Property Owner

Lovely cottage in quiet location Handy for day visits to Bath,Bristol and Wells Living room was cosy and kitchen very good Bedrooms a good size with comfy beds We enjoyed our stay very much
Thank you for your kind appraisal, so pleased that you found everything comfortable and that you had a lovely holiday. Thank you too, for leaving the cottage well. Property Owner
"Perfect home from home, warm and welcoming, the owner goes over the extra mile ..."
Perfect home from home, warm and welcoming, the owner goes over the extra mile to make sure you feel at ease in her lovely property, the location is close enough to Bath to enjoy the city without the hustle and Timsbury caters for most emergencies, certainly one of the best stays we've had
Thank you very much for your kind review, I'm so glad that you enjoyed Christmas at Crooked Well and were able to make good use of the lovely village. Thank you for booking my cottage. Property Owner
"Lovely warm and clean cottage; easy to find and plenty of space to park."
The village and its pub is very close by and there are surprisingly good food shopping facilities, so no need to drive and find a supermarket somewhere! I spend a lot of time checking places before deciding whether or not to book and Crooked Well met my demanding criteria.
Many thanks for your very positive comments, and for booking Crooked Well, I feel very happy that all your expectations were met and you had a good holiday. Of course you left the cottage beautifully; thank you. I can understand how you appreciated the facilities Timsbury has to offer; we are very lucky. Property Owner
"Absolutely loved our stay."
The cottage was cosy and well equipped. Easy parking and walking distance to pub and convenient store. Great location for sightseeing in the area. Highly recommend this stay.
It was lovely to meet you, I'm so glad that you enjoyed your stay and hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday in England. Thank you for your kind review and for leaving the cottage so well. Property Owner
"The house was very overlooked by other houses as it was in the middle of a modern housing estate, despite appearing old on the website."
To be fair it was very comfortable, in a great spot for touring and we had a great week, however, there were building works going on next door which meant that we were woken up by a cement mixer every day. It was reasonably priced and we had everything we needed, but it wasn't exactly what we expected when we booked it.
I am so sorry: the builders said they would try to be considerate and delay their morning start time with machinery, not working on the Saturday to give you a restful weekend. It was unfortunate that all the tradesmen appear to have worked this week due to being held back because of delays in delivery of materials. As described on the website, the cottage is in the very centre of the village but normally visitors are surprised at how quiet it is! I understand that an apology was made to you. I think one expects buildings to surround a centre village property, rather than a countryside setting, but the close proximity to the shops, pharmacy, pub Take-Away, playground etc. make it very convenient. The cottage is old, built in 1843, renovated first by my parents for their retirement in 1973. Despite being in the centre of the village it was surrounded by fields, but development in such a location was inevitable and Homefield is a cul de sac of sought after expensive detached houses. I can only apologise that it was not the “peaceful haven” described by some guests. Property Owner
"Once again we had a wonderful stay at Crooked well"
Thank you for your lovely comment, and for returning for another stay. It felt like welcoming old friends to see you again! I knew you would leave the cottage beautifully looked after, thank you. Property Owner
"The cottage was the best equipped one we’ve had in the last few years."
It was warm and cosy and spotless. It’s in an ideal position for Bath & Wells as well as many other places of interest. Neighbours were helpful when I had questions about recycling. I would definitely visit again. The owner was welcoming and the tea & homemade cake thoughtful gesture.
I very much enjoyed meeting you both, so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday and I was delighted to read your kind review. Thank you for leaving the cottage so well. Property Owner
"A lovely welcoming cottage with everything you could possibly want - plus more - nothing has been forgotten from cling film to screw drivers and we were welcomed with a delicious home made fruit cake."
The village is ideally placed for exploring the area and there are some lovely walks around Timsbury. I would highly recommend both the cottage and the area.
Many thanks for your helpful review. Perhaps other guests will try the Shepton Mallett Prison Tour which you evidently enjoyed so much! There certainly is no shortage of interesting places to visit in the area. Property Owner
Excellently equipped kitchen. The homemade fruit cake was delicious plus the very comfortable bed and hot showers. Our favourite place to eat was the Old Station Inn at Hallatrow. Fabulous location for visiting Bath, Wells and Glastonbury.
You obviously enjoyed exploring both this wonderful area and the excellent eating establishments we are lucky enough to have nearby, but the historic Old Station Inn will, I am sure, be delighted to be so highly recommended as I think I should pass on your comment! Thank you for your warm appraisal of the cottage and for leaving it so carefully looked after. Property Owner
"Comfortable living area but found beds very firm and unsuited to our tastes."
So sorry that the beds weren't comfortable for you, the first guests ever to not be suited to them: they are 'medium' in firmness as that seemed the best option to try to ensure they are comfortable for the guests, given that everyone has different preferences. I don't think I should change them as many guests have actually praised the beds for giving them good nights' sleep: the family who stayed last week in fact commented on "the very comfortable beds and hot showers" ....lovely stay ...cosy house'. I just hope this did not spoil your stay. Thank you for leaving the cottage well. Kind regards, Ann (Thankyou for writing in my guest book: "A comfortable stay in a lovely house. Lots to see and do in the area. Thanks for the welcome and the cake!") Property Owner
"Lovely cottage with everything we needed."
Your feedback is appreciated, and you left the cottage in excellent order, thank you. Property Owner
"We had a very comfortable working holiday in Crooked Well which is brilliantly located in a lovely village."
The hospitality was wonderful especially the delicious fruit cake. The garden is lovely to relax in and the village shop, pub and excellent fish and chips shop are all less than 5 minutes walk away.
Many thanks for your lovely review, and for your appreciation of our village; I am so glad you enjoyed your break even though you had to spend some of the time working. I enjoyed meeting you, our chat brought back happy memories of Bath Spa University, or Newton Park College as it was in my time there. Thank you for leaving the cottage so very well. Property Owner
"The cottage was well located, homely, comfortable and extremely well equipped."
Thank you so much for your kind comments, for leaving the cottage well, and I'm delighted that you said in the guest book that you will be back. Property Owner
"Can do no better than to echo comments of previous visitors as recorded in the visitor's book."
Cottage extremely comfortable and well set up including information about its history, local walks (much enjoyed) and places to visit etc. Would recommend without reservation.
Thank you very much for your lovely review. So glad you had such a lovely holiday; I enjoyed talking to you, and was interested to hear your thoughts on the village and local area. Many people are surprised to find out about the Somerset Coalfields history, and the canal built to serve them so close by. Your wife clearly enjoyed the history and I expect like me, she was intrigued by imagining life in Timsbury when it was such a vibrant hub of industry, which somehow isn't difficult to do, despite the village being a modern community in which to live. May I also thank you for leaving the cottage beautifully. Property Owner
"A very comfortable cottage in a good area for visiting Bath, Glastonbury and Wells."
There are excellent walks nearby too.
Many thanks, it was good that you found there are so many places of interest and beauty of a wide variety to enjoy within easy distance. Thank you for leaving the cottage so well. Property Owner
"A delightful ,well equiped cottage in a very peaceful location within easy reach of the lovely cities of Bath and Wells."
It had everything we needed and proved to be a very comfortable place to stay. Lovely gardens to relax in after busy sightseeing days. The village had a local pub and a couple of shops which were useful. Met the friendly owner who had left a wonderful cake and tea tray. Good local information left in folder and leaflets.
Thankyou for booking my cottage and for your lovely review, but also for leaving it so beautifully clean and tidy; are you sure you stayed?! Pleased that you enjoyed your holiday and sightseeing trips and that you made use of the village too. It was good to meet you after your tedious journey. Property Owner
"The house is fine, however."
.. We had to make some space in Cupboards for our food, we also moved some China cups out of reach of our children. When we left we received a message from the owner saying things were missing, we rang her straight up and explained they had been moved and are in a different cupboard, she had a very accusatory tone to my wife insinuating we had stolen the items. This upset my wife. A few days later we had a text saying the items had been found in another cupboard. A real shame to our stay - on this basis I cannot recommend the cottage - you may be accused of stealing cake tins. (My advice to the owner would be if such items are so close to your heart please replace things with items less valuable, and please accept that things may get moved, but insinuating theft is poor)
“Thank you for your help, located china and tins in far upper cupboard over microwave. That cupboard had looked unchanged when I opened the first door and saw usual storage containers, so should have checked the second door, the only one I didn’t look in! I had apologised to the new guests for lack of storage tins and said they were bound to find them somewhere I’d missed. Take care, kind regards, Ann”. That’s the text I sent when the items were located. Theft? It did not occur to me that they would think that. We’d had pleasant 'phone conversations previously. Why ever would they want storage tins and china cups? When they said they hadn’t taken them away, I laughed and said I did not think for one minute that they would have done, just so many things had been moved, I was embarrassed to send a text for help because I try to clean thoroughly from top to bottom, However if they truly believe I was accusing them of theft of cake tins and china then accept my sincere apology. The cups are on the top larder shelf because they are spares. They explained that their daughter reorganised the cupboards, that’s fine, everything is there for guests to use, and make themselves at home, nothing is precious. I am sorry if this put a dampener on their holiday experience after they wrote a lovely guest book review saying how much the family had enjoyed their holiday. Property Owner
"A most marvellous experience; the quintessential English cottage set in an equally quintessential English village."
Everything perfect and prepared with - obviously - loving care. To be highly recommended.
Thank you for your kind remarks, it was interesting to meet you and to welcome my first visitors from Germany; your reaction to your holiday home was lovely, I was glad it lived up to your expectations of a country cottage. Accuracy of the listing: we ask visitors to follow the written directions upon arrival as the Sat Nav tends to bring drivers to the footpath access instead of the road! Many thanks. Property Owner

Our stay at crooked well could not have been better we met the owner and she was very pleasant the cottage had everything you could wish for even a lovely fruit cake I would recommend the cottage and like to thank Ann for telling us a little bit about the history of the cottage and area
Thank you so much for your lovely review, it was lovely to meet you and I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay. I really appreciate the review because all my guests have written lovely comments in the Guest Book but nothing on the website, as I also appreciated your leaving the cottage in such good order. Property Owner
"Excellent property, met all our needs for the week."
Set in a quiet cul de sac with a lovely garden and it's own parking space. We'll equipped kitchen. Would definitely book again if visiting the area.
Delighted to hear this, thank you for the review and the way in which you left the cottage. Property Owner
"Very well equipped cottage."
Warm and comfortable. The owner was very friendly and obliging. Tea and cake on arrival was really appreciated and welcoming.
"Very well equipped comfortable property with flexible sleeping facilities and some very welcoming touches by the host."
Really well located for easy access to two of our favourite cities, Bath and Wells.
"The cottage was like a home from home, would definitely stay there again"
"A lovely cottage."
The little details of care provided by the owner made it even more special.
"Everything you could want is supplied at the cottage."
Very friendly owner. Couldn't fault it in anyway. Had lovely welcome with milk in the fridge and a lovely homemade cake as a welcome gift.
"Great holiday in the countryside of Somerset."
Nice little village, quiet but people around. Owner extremely knowledgeable of the area, having lived there. So well equiped and kept up to comfort, some lovely little villages to visit, and walks with wildlife.
"We enjoyed a superb break at Crooked Well, situated in a peaceful and private area of Timsbury - also a good base to explore Somerset."
The owner has lovingly refurbished her cottage to a high standard to make your stay very comfortable. Beautiful quality bed linen and towels are provided and the kitchen is stocked with all the equipment you will need. The comfortable cottage was lovely and clean and also has a beautiful garden to sit in if the weather permits. Timsbury is a delightful little village with very friendly and welcoming locals. It has a well stocked Co-op, fantastic pub, fish & chip shop and coffee shop. We made some lovely memories during our time at Crooked Well and wouldn’t hesitate to return.
"Fabulous place with outstanding hospitality."
Provided everything you will need for a week away from home, and more besides. Another wheely bin required as emptied 2 weekly; becomes full with 2 bags in it.
"Welcoming well equipped family home."
"Spotless, very well equipped, quality of the bedding and towels were excellent."
. A very tasty fruitcake and a tray all ready set for a well needed cup of tea was a pleasant touch. Felt like home and would definitely recommend Crooked Well and we would not hesitate in staying there again.
"A very welcoming place to stay."
We stayed as a family with my 6 month old daughter and had a wonderful time. A travel cot and highchair were provided for us and there is a lovely garden to enjoy. The village is very peaceful with a great local pub and the location is excellent for visiting the attractions in the surrounding area. It felt like home from home and wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying here.
"Very comfortable and well presented cottage."
Would stay there again with pleasure.
"Crooked Well is a lovely cosy cottage, very comfortable with everything that we needed."
It was meticulously clean, with lots of fluffy towels provided. The owner had even baked us a cake, which was really appreciated after a long drive to the cottage! There is one pub and one shop in the village and the cottage is only a 2 minute walk from both, which was very useful. The local pub, The Seven Stars was a real find, with a great menu, big garden and friendly staff. Timsbury is perfectly located to explore the West Country and we visited Stonehenge, The Roman Baths and Westonbirt Arboretum, whilst there. Overall a great break, in great accommodation!
"(I've responded before, but accidentally sent it too soon!"
) Crooked Well Cottage, besides being so comfortable for a holiday, was for us the ideal centre for visiting our children and grandchildren who live in the area. Even when covid restrictions are lifted we would like to stay there because the cottage is such a quiet retreat! We would recommend it to anyone wishing to explore Bath or Bristol, and there is easy access to other beautiful places in Somerset. There are some good local shops and pleasant walks in Timsbury itself. My experience of Helpful Holidays has always been very good. Thank-you.
"It doesn't take long to feel at home at this comfortable cottage."
It is warm, clean and bright, and very well and generously equipped, especially the kitchen where the owner had anticipated all of our culinary needs. The beds ensure a good night's sleep and the house is situated in a quiet and peaceful location. It was very pleasant sitting in the sunshine in the pretty garden. Even in these difficult times, the owner was able to give a warm welcome in the form of a home-made cake and communications were excellent. Should you need it, help is immediate and on hand. We can highly recommend this property.
