  • "It was a beautiful cottage."

Tastefully decorated, very comfortable, clean and fully equipped. A beautiful quiet area with lovely surroundings although it is only a few minutes from the M4. Very well situated. We had a lovely weekend stay and will go again, hopefully for longer.

Although on a working farm, this didn’t affect our enjoyment of the surroundings, no nasty smells or early morning noises! Only a couple of gripes, some of the lights and the rechargeable torch weren’t working, and the ovens were long overdue a good clean. The rest of the accommodation and surrounding yard were very clean and tidy. We enjoyed our stay at Oxen Cottage even if the weather was not very kind to us!

Hi Susan. Many thanks for the review. Glad you enjoyed the property and hope the weather at least gave you brief chances to explore beyond the farm gate? I shall make note in regards to the cooker as periodically they require more than a weekly wipe round. Hope to see you again. Martin Property Owner

  • "Overall this is a lovely cottage."

Comfortable, spacious, clean and quite well equipped. Inside is gorgeous although a couple of minor observations - the TV must be 20 years old. It's not a smart TV so couldn't log into any of my digital services which means a very limited offering of channels. The picture isn't great either. The information posted on the wall in the hall is completely out of date as it says that there is no internet in Oxen cottage. We found a router in the kitchen but because of the information sheet and the fact there was no ethernet cable or password on the back we didn't believe we had internet. We couldn't contact the owner so contacted Sykes. The owner came back to us next day to say there is indeed internet but the password was on the bottom of the router. Once connected the internet is very good and reasonably fast but would have been good to have up to date info in the first place. In fairness the owner wasn't very well at the time we visited. The other thing is the garden furniture - it is literally falling apart and very old/uncomfortable. Which is a pity given that the other properties all have really lovely smart modern garden furniture. These are only minor things though and overall we had a great time. The cottage is generally lovely and the farm is beautiful. The bed linen and towels are spotless and of good quality and everything in the cottage with the exception of the wine fridge works. Not sure why other people have complained about flies - the weather was very hot when we were there and we had no particular problem with flies or indeed any farm smells. They did provide a fly spray and some very good fly screens on the french doors which may have helped? We would especially recommend The New Inn in Upper Seagry. We had Sunday lunch there which was divine (you need to book but they are very good with e-mail) and we ate there again on the Friday night which was fabulous. It's very much a "real" pub used mainly by locals and it really is lovely.

Hello Diane, Many thanks for your constructive feedback. I am pleased to read that you found the cottage lovely, the farm beautiful and the local pub got a tick in the right box also. There are some elements to your review that do disappoint but also need some clarification for readers. I accept your point that the TV is not entirely up to date, it is however flat screen with full freeview channels available. I often have to ask myself when the right time is to change items that aren’t broken and still serve the purpose they're intended for. However, I shall consider updating the TV although technology is hard to keep up with these days. The garden furniture is 3 years old, is all weather rattan material and I can see no reason why you feel it is falling apart and old? Oxen cottage is our entry level cottage and yes, other larger more premium properties on the farm do have furniture suitable for the pricing of the property. However, we never detract from quality regardless of price. Lastly, the internet; The general information on the wall as you enter is very broad to cover all aspects of the property and farm in general. Oxen Cottage is the last to be connected to the internet relatively recently. The cottage is advertised as having internet, the cottage has internet and the flashing router that sits prominently on the kitchen counter is clear to see even if that small aspect on the information sheet is dated. You stayed whilst i was suffering with covid hence keeping a low profile. You called and left a voice message; I returned that call within 5 minutes with no answer and your phone does not offer a voice mail service so I followed up with a text message all within 5 minutes of your call. The following day sykes called to ask about the internet and they too tried to return your call but could not get through. I then tried calling the secondary number on your booking, again with no answer and no voice mail service and I followed up with a further text message which you received, and the situation was resolved. I feel that as hosts and given the circumstances we did all we could in a swift and professional manner. That said, you clearly had a lovely time here with beautiful weather baring the couple of niggles mentioned. You are certainly welcome as always to return and we'd be happy to see you. • "A lovely barn, especially to look at and with good quality fixtures and fittings but sadly so many little issues."

Never saw the owner to provide any feedback directly sadly otherwise we would have done that instead of leaving it on here, strange that other reviews mentioned about a warm welcome. We were very sad to discover the premises appeared to not have been cleaned upon arrival and there was even someone else's breakfast toast left under the grill, dirty cutlery in the drawer that we had to clean before using, a pair of tights/leggings that had been wet and left under the sink and absolutely stunk so much so that we ended up washing the cupboard and bin out to get rid of the smell. Lots of dirt under the twin beds that we found when we tried to put them together for a kingsize as described. All these cleaning issues were as if the premises had not been cleaned before we got there after the last visitors so if a specialist cleaning contractor is being used then they shouldn't be getting paid! Lots of high level big cobwebs and dust hanging down all over especially over the twin beds. The next problem was flies flies flies. Yes we were on a farm but its February and every time we left the property we sprayed the fly spray and came back to lots of dead flies but also lots more live flies but no idea where they were coming from but every room had lots of them. A simple welcome pack would be great telling people how to use the heating, cooker range, fire and other equipment normally found in other holiday cottages. It would also be great to have a side table for the chair and also an extra chair in the living room as 4 adults is a bit of a squash on the current sofa and single chair unless they are all beanpoles and sit upright so much so one of our party ended up sitting on the floor. Lighting - half of the row of high level lights don't work, reviews say reported before so perhaps the owners don't want them working. In that case just remove them. Finally the outbuilding roof right opposite is coming off and banged all day and all night in the wind and sadly kept us awake. We left a voicemail message for the owner as we couldn't get hold of them but nothing was addressed nor no phone calls back. Its a real shame all these points as the place has the potential to be great but a lack of contact from the owners and a lack of cleaning and attention to detail - all these things could be rectified easily. Also a lot of them were reported either on the reviews or in the visitor book in the cottage so the owners do know about all of these things.

Hello. I'm sorry to hear about your arrival, I will speak to the cleaning team and make sure this does not happen again. We will also increase the supplies in the property to deal with flies, as you said, it is a farm. We have not had a welcome pack due to covid but will look to reintroduce this in the near future. That said, there are basic information in regards to the farm, heating and hot water etc laminated on the wall as you enter. Sadly you visited us during a once in a generation storm with wind speeds exceeding 80mph. Fortunately the cottages got through without damage however that can’t be said for one of our chickens sheds where the roof blew off. I’m sure you’d understand this took our attention as appose to fixing part of a roof that was blowing in the wind in an adjacent outbuilding. We are always keen to act on the properties with feedback when we receive them. Although the cottage has been ticking along nicely with the furniture in situ for a number of years now we have acted on both yours and the previous review about an extra arm chain the lounge. This is taking pride of place beside the fireplace. We have also removed the string lights in the kitchen that we were waiting on being repaired. Should you be holidaying in the area again please do get in touch. Property Owner

  • "We loved the space and style of the property and the surrounding conversions."

Warm and well presented. But only really a 2+2 children when considering the extremely narrow single beds, and the provision of only 4 seats including a three seater (if upright and slim) sofa; we brought in one of the outside chairs! The living space could also do with table/shelf lamps either side of the chimney (and faux stove) to allow the ‘all main lights’ switch to be set to off when reading or watching TV. A pity the lights over the sink worktop don’t work. Rugs would be welcome in the double bedroom (cold floors) though may provide a slip hazard if not well fixed, I fear, in these days of H&S. We liked the en-suite, though the shower tray fills close to full each time and of course the screen doesn’t fully contain the spray. The door catch is also difficult and will no doubt fail soon from the effort required to get it to engage with the ’receiver’…. So, lovely to look at and ‘be in’, but a number of practical niggles, not commensurate with the price. We’d like to be able to return for a full week and/or warmer weather but can’t afford the prices then applying, so may well not.

Hello Christopher. Many thanks for your feedback. We are delighted that you loved the style and setting of the cottage on the farm and particularly pleased that you gave us top marks on cleanliness on the breakdown. Thank you also for your constructive feedback on ‘practical niggles’ that we will consider and implement for future guests. Hope to meet again. Kind regards Martin Property Owner

The decoration throughout is super, the beds are really comfy and the kitchen is well equipped. As a family who tend to visit a holiday cottage or two a year, we were delighted with the size of the fridge and freezer (much bigger than often found) - big enough for us to store all our food for the week easily (the plug in cool box wasn't needed!) The stock of cleaning supplies was really reassuring in these current times too. Although COVID-19 has led to reduced contact with others in person, we did see Martin a couple of times and he responded really promptly to texts.
