  • "The location of the property was very good but unfortunately the cottage neither looked like the photos on the Sykes site, as well as not living up to the standards claimed."

We arrived to a property that due to a serious fire on the main house, had a lot of scaffolding up next door, which did affect the cottage. On a practical side we were affected by the noise of the white scaffolding sheeting each night when the wind was blowing! During the day there were regular comings and goings by tradespeople, as well as drilling etc which all made it difficult to relax when trying to in the sunshine! The outside furniture was of a very poor state with no cushions offered (again very different to the photos on the site). Cleanliness and standard of the property was poor. We were kept awake at night by the many mice/rats running around in the loft. Outside the bathroom the sewerage was coming up when the toilet was flushed, leaving a very unpleasant smell. We went out and ate out a lot more due to the many issues in the cottage. We hardly saw the owners and were very aware that they have a lot on sorting their home out after this major fire. However in hindsight it might have been better to not let the cottage during this period. Although through choice we arrived a day late, we also left a day early as new beds are required in this property as well as sorting the mice/sewerage and cleanliness out. We have photos of all of the above (except the mice) which do not want to attach to this but I am happy to forward at any time. We look forward to receiving a speedy and satisfactory response. Angela and Steve

Dear Angela & Steve, It is such a shame that you did not bring any of this to our attention during your stay and give us the opportunity to address your issues. When I greeted you on arrival I said to just knock on our door if you have any questions etc. Sykes Cottages also have a dedicated helpline for any guests who need help during their stay and we are sorry that that neither they or we were given the opportunity to help you at the time. You only mentioned the mice and overflow in a text to me after you had left, and in which you also stated “location was great (smiley face emoji) and we enjoyed Hope Mansell”. The overflow was resolved as soon as we returned home that day and traps set for any mice – now also resolved – the cottage is in a rural area surrounded by farms and fields. Although we work during the day both of us were home each evening from 5:30pm when you would have had the opportunity to talk to us and therefore resolve your issues. You will have been made aware of the scaffolding on the main barn and workmen visiting when making your booking as this has been on the Sykes website for our property since January. You will see from feedback this year that our previous guests were all aware of the scaffolding/building work and it did not detract from their stay. If we had been made aware of the sheeting disturbing your sleep we could have removed it. There are cushions for all the outside furniture in the cottage – if you couldn’t find them you could have asked. I do agree that the outside wooden table and chairs need replacing and we are in the process of sourcing a new set for next season. We will have to disagree regarding the cleanliness of the property and the beds. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely stay at Sutton Barn."

The owners were friendly and approachable but not intrusive. The barn was clean and very comfortable with the best equipped kitchen we’d ever had.Scaffolding on the main barn meant we didn’t have full access to the patio area but this wasn’t an issue as we had the run of the beautiful garden which the dogs enjoyed. The area was lovely with lots of good dog walks in the Forest of Dean and along the river Wye. We were able to get a supermarket delivery to the barn which was very convenient for us. If you like a rural retreat I can recommend Sutton Barn.
