  • "A spacious and delightful traditional cottage retaining a warm family cosiness."

A practical layout for any accompanying dogs with a tiled kitchen floor and beautiful Aga. Incredible views and walks right outside the door with plenty more close by. A great little pub (The Brewers) a short walk away, another (The Nags Head) which we walked to over the ‘tops’ where you’ll find friendly locals, good food and plenty of real ales. I’m sure we will return.

As the property is on high ground, it has scenic views including Melvern Hills. The Beds were extremely comfortable and the property has plenty of room especially considering it is a two bedroom house. Plenty of parking area on the driveway which is part of the property’s private ground. The owner Nick, was so helpful especially when I had a concern with the Aga, and travelled to the property to reset the controls for me, and relieved me of my concern. Many Thanks to Nick and would love to return to the property in the future. Dave H.

The garden is not enclosed, has a 6ft drop down to the lane which can be dangerous. Make sure to bring longer leads for the garden (there was one available). Loved the kitchen and learning how to use the aga. Great access to footpaths up to the hill and very close to the beacon, allowed day walks to the top. The shower could use some TLC. Enjoyed the welcome basket and how close we were to lots of things. The dogs absolutely loved it too!

The view from the house is outstanding, with wonderful walks starting directly from the house. The kitchen with Aga was very warm and cosy and a pleasure to cook in. We are a family of 4 with a Labrador, and this was an ideal base for a walking holiday. We enjoyed one night at the community owned pub, which is a 10 minute walk away through the lovely woods. There was one issue with the dish washer which we mentioned to Nick, and it was repaired immediately. There was a lovely welcome basket, and a full basket of logs which we promptly used in the open fire place, which was a hit with everyone.

It's a very well equipped cottage and cooking on the Aga was a bonus. The reason I marked down the comfort category was that 3 of the 4 people were over 6' tall and the beds were a bit tight. Having a single sofabed and a curtain or door to the kitchen would make the snug into an occasional bedroom, which would have been useful. It is a great cottage with amazing views and wonderful walks straight from the front door. The last sentence can be published.

.. but no warning of large pot holes in entrance gravel lane that continues below cottage to the road and dogs can jump the 6ft plus drop down to it from lower garden? Described as "Enclosed gravel area with furniture, lawns" it is not an enclosed garden! Potential to be great if cleaner, upgraded beds/toiletries/welcome items (spare room was not made up, left over items, not jar of coffee/tea caddy or any condiments), some fencing and updated guest info (local pub closed). Owners were very polite and feedback forms would be useful, as no space in guest book to help improve things!

Perfect location for exploring the hills, as routes up are right outside the cottage. Aga really makes the kitchen cosy and Aga toast is a must. View from kitchen means washing up was always a pleasure! Plenty of space in all rooms. Welcome pack of wine, butter, bread and biscuits was a nice touch. Sitting outside watching day break and the mist rising was like being in the Shire (The Hobbit). Sunsets even better. Nothing negative at all about location and cottage. Just one small point to note is that local pub is currently closed which is a shame given it was a community pub. Apparently new owners will be taking over in about a month. However, plenty of places to eat in Malvern and only a short cab journey if you don’t want to drive.

It is within easy access to Malvern and the surrounding counties of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire which have many lovely places to visit together with a village pub just 5 minutes walk away. We loved the comfort and situation and a very nice welcome basket of biscuits, bread (very tasty), bottle of wine, pots of jam and marmite, butter and a few items of tinned foods. The Agar cooker was brilliant and kept the kitchen and surrounding area cosy, whilst an open log fire was made ready for us on arrival with paper, logs, fire lighters and matches supplied. A basket of games are supplied for both adults and kids with a supply of books to read. Both the lounge and snug had separate televisions, one sky including sports and the other terrestrial only. I should point out that the twin bedroom is considerably smaller than the other and more suited to children, as the wardrobe is very small. We also looked in vain for re-cycling of glass, paper, plastic and the promised bin bag collection on the Thursday did not collect our bag, though we left it on top of the hedge (at the end of the hedge), as per instructions. Future hirers might be advised to use a 'one way' system for arriving and leaving, coming in via the Sugar Loaf Cafe and going out via the southern end, as turning the car around on the drive is difficult. But these are minor points - all round it is a lovely place to stay.

However there were a few factors that caused concern. The front door was extremely hard to exit. The handles were mismatched made exiting from the front door almost impossible. I shudder to think what would have happened if a fire broke out. The heating in the downstairs toilet needs to he repaired as well as the flush mechanism . The cottage was decorated with personal effects of a previous resident including photographs, while I do understand this was someone's home before I didn't really need a photo of the deceased staring at me while on holiday. Generally a bit of an upgrade is needed , new carpets new sofa would make a great difference.

  • "A beautiful location and absolutely stunning views and sunsets, wow!"

Sitting in the garden sipping wine on an unusually warm and sunny autumnal afternoon was wonderful! I have given mixed ratings because whilst the view and position were terrific and bedding was lovely and clean, the kitchen felt grubby (i.e. a classic 'man-draw' with nail clippers all in with the knifes and forks, old food in the cupboards and freezer... sticky surfaces, if you touched anything you felt like you needed to wash your hands (good practice anyway I guess!... it just all needed a proper clean), the downstairs bathroom and toilet were dirty (we ended up having to clean them before we used them), and the tiny shower room has mould in the shower; a dark downstairs toilet even with the light on so you can't see all you need to easily, a deafening pump kicks in to run the shower and if you happen to be in the loo next door (where the pump is located) is it so loud, the bed mattresses are uncomfortable and need changing, the furniture is old and dated and as I say a bit 'grubby'..... anyway that kind of thing. It is a stunning location and the walks from the front door are wonderful, it just lets itself down with the condition of a lot inside the cottage.

We foolishly left our tablet behind when packing and they wrapped it up carefully and sent it to us at no charge. A hidden gem which we plan to return to. The welcome pack was excellent especially the Malbec red wine. Superb location for walks onto the hills. Excellent living rooms including Sky Sports on the main tv which would have been great in normal times. We weren't that keen on the Aga (and some idiots guide instructions would have been good) but that's personal choice. Just a note for anyone looking at this property with a reactive dog - being on a busy walking route up to the Hills, other off lead dogs were near the cottage on a regular basis which meant that we couldn't walk our collie in the immediate area, but if you have a non reactive dog, it would be superb. The cottage is described as having a fully enclosed garden but there is a very low wall on one side (the lowest level) and a gap on the side (lower left corner) which any dog could jump over. The owners should address this or change the description to exclude the words "fully enclosed". Having said that, the garden and furniture provided are lovely. We left early due to escalating corona virus restrictions and a feeling that we needed to be at home at this difficult time but that is no reflection on the cottage.

  • "We believe that Lilac cottage to the best cottage that we have ever stayed at, now this is not an easy statement to make or to justify without us first having reviewed all of the places that we have visited over many years."

The interior and exterior of the cottage are fresh and very clean and a lot of energy has gone into it, my first reaction when going into the hall was its like a hotel, and each room offers all that you will need for a great stay. Now the views are beyond description or photograph and must be seen to be believed they are stunning, we estimated that the views across the valley are in the distance of about 25 miles and the sunsets are fantastic. Its been so good to sit outside every day last week, made more comfortable by the outdoor chairs and the benches and tables. I sat outside on 3 evenings watching the stars and a very feint Milky Way form, although not a Dark skies area its very good. As far as access to the Malvern hills is concerned you walk out of the front door or garden gate and you are on them, its as simple as that. We walked into Great Malvern and it took us less than half an hour going but quite a bit longer coming back. The Beacon and Sugar loaf are the nearest hills and the paths are well defined and good. And of course there is the Aga which is a beast of a thing and we wondered if it would be too hot in the kitchen, but it wasn't an issue but we where glad of the microwave. The Aga makes good toast which was the limit of my experience. Oh and there is a Dish washer which isn't mentioned in the description. Lilac cottage is a much loved home and we would love to go back again.

  • "What a fabulous find."

Booked last minute and had a lovely break. The cottage is great. Very homely and luxurious. Loved the aga and cooking the old fashioned way. Walks from the cottage are straight from the gate with miles of the Malvern hills. The view from the cottage is outstanding- spent hours just sitting and staring out and taking it all in. Didn’t want to leave and will definitely be back.

  • "We were very happy with our stay at Lilac Cottage."

In particular, the position as shown in the photograph was accurate which meant that from the outset we felt it met expectations. The owners had thought through their guests' needs as far as one possibly can, and a minor problem was sorted out within half an hour of a phone call. We found the cottage to be a perfect location for quiet relaxation with a stunning view of the Welsh mountains and a network of walks in the Malvern Hills on the doorstep.
