  • "A really lovely cottage in a great location."

Issues about stairs are documented in listing and we found no issue. Cottage is well equipped, parking works well and my family and I had a great time and will be looking to return. Also a very helpful guide to the area!

Thank you for this lovely review. We're delighted you loved the cottage and location. We would love to welcome you again. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

  • "Japonica Cottage is a small terraced house right on the relatively busy High Street in Bourton on the Water."

The location of the cottage is great for going into the little town or to its one super market. Unfortunately, the road is quite noisy between 7am and 10pm minimum, and as the small living room and the bedrooms are only about 2 yards away from passing traffic, you feel constantly that some of this traffic is going right through the house as the old single-glazing original windows do not insulate you from the noise. We were very surprised that none of the reviews had mentioned this clearly, so were hoping for a quiet road. The bed was comfortable and the television worked fine. The kitchen is simple and small but well enough equipped for two people. The bathroom shower could benefit from a shower curtain over the bath, but warm water and heating was all fine. The stairs are a tribute to the inventive- and resourcefulness of the people who built the small house. A bonus is the parking right behind the house, just make sure your car does not exceed the size of a Volkswagen Golf in width. We found the narrow driveway perfectly fine to negotiate and had more problems with the lack of lighting in the car-port area (the small yard is lit). The shared washing-machine and dryer worked fine for us and in warmer weather sitting in the yard could well have been a bonus. The add-on veranda is essential if you want to be somewhere quiet during the day so kudos to the owners for having invested in this. We would definitely recommend investing in two new 2-seaters, the current ones are the worst ones we have come across so far in 20 years of renting cottages. Ideal would be something with fold down arm-rests as this would allow you to relax a bit in the small living room.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this comprehensive feedback. We hope you enjoyed your stay in Japonica Cottage and that the description of the location wasn’t in any way misleading. The cottage does face onto the high street and the traffic can be variable but is normally minimal from early evening onwards. The location is often recommended by guests who love the convenience of being able to walk to all the shops, restaurants and pubs nearby. We appreciate your comments regarding the shower but we are restricted by the height of the ceiling within the bathroom which would make it impractical. We do emphasise in our description that the stairs are steep for anyone with limited mobility and try to highlight any issues which may be of concern. In terms of the sofas, as the living room is fairly small we are restricted in choice to finding sofas that physically fit into the room. We’re pleased that you enjoyed relaxing in the conservatory and appreciated the bonus of a parking space in such a busy market town and hope we can welcome you again one day. • "We had a great week in Japonica cottage."

We were in the Cotswolds for a wedding on the Thursday but stayed the whole week in Japonica. Location in Bourton is ideal (only minutes from the town shops and restaurants etc). Only small criticism was lack of wall mounted shower although the owner explains in the guest book that this is impractible due to ceiling height. All in all, a great holiday cottage. Nick Bridge

Very comfortable cottage. A real bonus to have a parking space, and a garden for the pooch. The small conservatory was useful for storage of coats and boots, and a nice place to relax with a drink. Stairs would be tricky for those less mobile, but we were okay with them.

The alley way where you have to drive your car is very narrow and we dented and scratch our brand new car which wasn't great so just take extra care. Also it would be better if there was a proper shower.

  • "Japonica Cottage was lovely."

Superb location in the High Street, many pubs and restaurants within a short walk. Londis supermarket just 10 mins walk down the road. The cottage has very steep stairs to the double bedroom and then continues to the 2 x single beds on the 3rd floor. The guests on the 3rd floor only has access to the toilet by walking through the main bedroom. The bathroom only has a bath and no wall fitted shower, there is a shower but only hand held for washing your hair whilst sat in the bath. It would be a great addition to have a shower screen or shower curtain fitted and a wall fitted shower. We took our dog with us, it was lovely that she could be let out in the communal garden, it was safe but you need to check that the large gate is closed.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. We're delighted you enjoyed your stay at Japonica Cottage and also loved the location too. Parking behind the property is very tight to enter and exit. The only real gripe we had was that the TV reception was poor. TV invariably had picture freeze due to a poor signal. Disappointingly, this had been mentioned by other guests prior to our stay but it appears the problem hasn't been resolved, despite the owners suggesting they would look into the issue.

The crockery and cutlery needed washing before use. The window sills were dusty and we felt the property could have done with a good clean.Tv reception needs attention, as it was keep pixelating. The cottage did however have all amenities, however, the security box for the keys was open when we arrived, and we were unable to lock it when we left.

Thank you for providing us with feedback on your stay. We can only apologise for the cleanliness issues that you have experienced, as well as issues with the keysafe. These have been taken onboard. The TV reception problems were due to the rapidly changing extreme weather conditions, which are beyond anyone's control.. Located in the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the historic village of Bourton-on-the-Water dates back to Neolithic times with over 100 buildings being Grade II listed or higher. The picturesque high street nestles alongside the River Windrush over which several low stone bridges span, which is why Bourton-on-the-Water is known as the Venice in the Cotswolds. Tradition states that an annual football match is played in the summer, in the River Windrush with the banks lined with spectators, with the aim to score as many goals as possible and get as wet as possible! The village has an eclectic range of visitor attractions, including The Model Village, Cotswold Motor Museum, Birdland Park and Gardens as well as a Dragonfly Maze, monthly farmers’ market as well as many tea rooms, an artisan bakery, antiques and craft markets, traditional sweet shop, cycle hire and its very own perfumery. Nearby, Stow-on-the-Wold, originally an Iron Age Fort, epitomises traditional England. This ancient market town has played host to many fairs since the 12th century and today holds a biannual Gypsy Horse Fair, craft fairs and monthly farmers' market. The vast market square boasts an ancient cross at one end and the village stocks at the other, surrounded by an elegant array of Cotswold stone townhouses, antiques shops, tea rooms, traditional pubs, award-winning restaurants and its very own cricket museum. Also take a visit to the medieval town of Burford for a great day out where you can enjoy a trip to the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens. The Saxon market town of Moreton-in-Marsh and the quintessential English village of Broadway are both within easy reach and make a great day out. The spa town of Cheltenham is, architecturally, the most complete Regency town in England with an incredible range of shops, cinemas, theatres, restaurants and pubs, it is famous for its horse racing festival in March, culminating in the Gold Cup steeplechase. Oxford, the oldest university city in England and sometimes called The City of Dreaming Spires has an abundance of prestigious attractions, including the 38 colleges of the university (half of which date back before 1600), the oldest university teaching room, the Bodleian Library, Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums, and Botanic Gardens. Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Worcester and the waterfront city of Gloucester are also all within easy reach.
