“On entering the cottage, the rooms were very cold.”

The radiators were set to 15C. The Bathroom and master bedroom Vlux windows were not closed and would not close. This was giving quite a draught through the bedroom. We did inform and these were improved (but the bedroom window) was still poorly fitted so gaps were still visible and water dripping into bedroom. ...

The toilet roll holder in the bathroom is almost falling off. The Kitchen sink tap was not fully screwed down so was wobbly. Only 2 mugs? NO tee towel to dry the washing up. Whilst the above items are not terrible; when paying a large amount for two nights stay (and we have stayed in Burford many times in other cottages and hotels at the same period in time first weekend in December) I expected better. Lacks charm, and furniture is bumped and worn. Positives are location, opposite the Angel PH, close to High st. Swanlings is a far far better cottage for almost the same price. I would be cautious in recommending this cottage

The property

With a history dating back to Tudor times, Burford's Old Bakery really is an old house.

Thankfully, however, a rather swish make over in recent times has turned this classic Cotswolds' stone building into a rather gorgeous retreat in the heart of Burford.

Records suggest that the famous Banbury Cake recipe made its first appearance from this very building, and given that the current owners are locally renowned bakers, they felt it only right to supply a couple of cakes for guests to enjoy on arrival!

Situated (literally) 12 seconds walk from the High Street, the property is a comfortable holiday home, located on the first floor (normal, easy to climb stairs) of a venerable old building.

Inside The Old Bakery is elegant, even understated, and charming making it a romantic place to retreat to the large master bedroom looks towards Burford church in the distance, whilst a swanky bathroom is restful as it is smart.

If you're bringing friends or children the second bedroom is a welcome addition.Whether you're planning to park and do nothing except eat out in Burford, or you're going to get out and tour the wonders of the Cotswolds, this little bolt hole is a great choice.

Delightful.

Please note that the bakery is no longer located on site, so you will not be disturbed early morning!!

About the location

Burford

Burford is possibly one of, if not THE most famous of the Cotswolds' locations. With its medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages, Burford is justifiably one of the most picturesque towns in England. Often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Cotswolds', the town was originally a fortified Anglo-Saxon ford which later grew to be an important regional crossroads and wealthy wool town. Located mid way between Oxford and Cheltenham (25 mins each away) it is a little haven of history and beauty that many come to fall in love with when they visit. The 16th century Tolsey building, once the meeting place for medieval merchants, now houses The Tolsey Museum, a delightful local museum illustrating the town's social and industrial past. The church is stunning, a real gem architecturally with many interesting memorials charting some of Burford's great families. There is also the signature, on the baptisimal font, of Antony Sedley, one of the Levellers besieged in the church in 1649 - three of the ringleaders were executed by Oliver Cromwell's men in the churchyard. History awaits! With little changing over the centuries, Burford is now very popular with visitors, both for its beauty and history but also for its shopping and antiques, and for the wide variety of places to eat, with restaurants, pubs and teashops. It is an ideal base for visiting The Cotswolds area as it is within easy driving distance of popular attractions such as Blenheim Palace, Sudley Castle, Warwick Castle and several National Trust Houses and Gardens. Bourton on the Water, Bibury, Cirencester and Stow on the Wold are all with 25 minutes from the property.
