Quiet spot and the lodge had some nice original features.

  • "The cottage was filthy, with the grill pan unwashed with the reminants of the last holiday makers cooking, dust so thick you could write your name in."

The hot tub took hours to heat up as there was a problem with it, and wasn't hot enough for me to use until 8pm that night. The bedding for the pull out sofa was not added ready for use. The 5 days were spent looking at upturned discarded furniture ( Sofa and 2 chairs- by the bins- near the hot tub. I was told the chemicals would be left for me to add to the hot tub every day, which arrived Tuesday afternoon. The handyman was around alot in the first 2 days making it hard to feel at ease with my grandchildren and leaving us with little privacy. I sent in a complaint & clear photo's to Sykes with all these issues but have had a very unsatisfactory response. The owners response to my complaints was to lie, the cleaners had already left the site when we had arrived 1 hour earlier than planned, the other holiday makers next door had already moved in and were unpacking. We dropped our cold items in the fridge and went for an hours walk so that we weren't in the cottage until the 4pm arrival time. A very disappointed customer! There should be a link to add photos to this review!

  • "The property was clean and welcoming, but what would have been appreciated was a booklet containing information about the property, as we were expected to write everything down, when we phoned the day before to get the key access code."

Also information on the area walks , pubs and restaurants etc would have been appreciated. Also we paid for the cottage with hot tub, so we expected the facilities to be ready when we arrived not switched off and we had to wait for the tub to warm up.

Well equipped and super hot tub. In my opinion the lounge suite could to with an update as was dated, fabric ripped under the throws and footrest didn't work. Could do with some hooks for hanging coats up. Was disappointed to be told there was not a decent pub nearby to eat at, as the listing said it was 12 mins walk. Overall we had a lovely time.

  • "The heating in the bedrooms was not working when we arrived but we made the owner aware and the maintenance people were quick to respond and sort the issue out."

The lodge is a lovely place and its in a very peaceful area. The only thing that would have made it better would be if there were an enclosed space for each lodge. It would have been nice to allow my dog to wonder around without a lead but that was not possible here as it opened straight out to the forest.

  • "Beautiful cottage in a beautiful location."

Couldn't have been happier with the property and the facilities - especially the hot tub! Our only criticism is that there is no manual or welcome book with explanations of how to operate the hot tub, where extra towels are, recommendations for things to do in the area etc which would have helped. But overall we loved the place and are already planning our trip back next year!

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

There were few minor bits that we noted that could do with perhaps some consideration, such as the provision of cooking implements and pans. There was also an area in the bathroom where work had been carried out and not made entirely good. However we thought it was a charming little cottage that was very well presented and in a fantastic location and we would recommend it.

  • "The pictures shown in the advertisement were misleading."

I’m glad it was changed now. The hot tub is now located in the middle of the drive. There was no privacy..and you do want privacy if you don’t like people seeing you half naked! At one point the guests from next door came into our cottage, looking for staff. It was just nothing like we hoped it would be, unfortunately. The staff was friendly and Erica (the owner) was fast to respond to calls/msgs. The cottage was super clean and the hot tub was cleaned and checked every day.

  • "So after reading the description upon booking, the reviews on Sykes said that the hot tub wasn’t included, and in fact there was a £30 charge for 2 hours use of it."

After speaking directly with Erica (the owner) she confirmed that Sykes needed to update the listing, and the hot tub was included with the property. Loved Danby Lodge, and if like us your not into mountain biking etc, we found Monmouth was about a 15 minute drive away, with some nice restaurants, supermarkets and shops. Coleford had a big co-op and Lidl too if you need a supermarket close by. Will definitely be staying again in the near future.

Many thanks for your feedback. We used to have a gazebo with a sauna and a hot tub and this was shared between the three lodges and there was an additional charge of £30 to book a session in. However, each property now has their own exclusive hot tub . Property Owner

Only 2 things would be recommended, BBQ tools as we had to cook on the bbq with a spatula instead of tongs. Also there is a pizza oven but no pizza trays/paddles. Other than that the lodge was great! Very clean, comfy beds and its location is wonderful, can't hear anything but nature!!

The people running it are lovely and having our own hottub was amazing, The situation is extraordinary - basically IN the Forest of Dean. Its important to understand that there is a square shared with the people in the conjoined cottage with one shared outside table - which feels like you can't really relax re eating outside. But all in all a phenomenal break. Thank you

  • "There is a misleading image in the listing which suggests that there is a private terrace for this lodge."

In actual fact this image is for another lodge, the outside area is neither private (it is overlooked by a neighbouring lodge) nor secure (it leads onto the parking area with no fence). This was frustrating as in the heat we wished to keep the door open, but this lead to issues regarding our dog, espeicially as the cottage requires dogs to be kept on the lead at all times. That said we enjoyed our stay and would consider returning (although we would book a different lodge).

The sign at the bottom of driveway needs to be bigger so people know where to go on first arriving and when you come up the hill it’s not signed at all, and the kitchen lights are hidden behind the microwave but no way of knowing unless you phone the owner or search. And the last thing is when it was booked there was no indication that the hot tub was at a charge of £30 for a 2 hour session,it wasn’t until I looked Xmas day when I opened the present of the wife that I seen it right at the bottom in small print when phoned Sykes to mention I was told I would have to pay the full price to cancel also the day after arriving out of the 3 lodges we were the only occupants so at least we could have had the hot tub free out of all the lodges log cabin we have stayed in this is the first time we had to book and pay for the use of the hot tub.You go away to relax not have extra expenses on top that would have been an extra £120 for 4 days use for the 2 hours

  • "Everything about the lodge was great, the only disappointment was that the lodge was advertised as coming with a hot tub and sauna, this claim was made big and bold on the listing."

The fact that the sauna and hot tub had to be pre-booked and paid for in addition (which is very unusual when booking weekend lodges) was only mentioned in the fine print at the very bottom of the listing. I would strongly recommend that the owners make this requirement clear at the top of the lodge description to prevent future disappointment. But again, apart from this the lodge was great!

They double booked for hot tub so confirmed to us that it wasn’t organised at all. When we were finally able to get our booking for the hot tub we were only provided with two robes when there was four of us on the booking and advertisement also said slippers & plastic glasses, they had neither so paid full price yet didn’t get what was advertised. The lodge actually states dog friendly yet I was told my dog couldn’t go the toilet on the grass around the and we had to go to two of the local fields, which is absolutely ridiculous if you ask me. For the price this wasn’t worth it at all, I’m extremely disappointed and doubt it very much if I’ll be booking through Sykes again. Will definitely not be booking Danby lodge again.

  • "The pictures on the listing for Danby Lodge are very misleading."

One of the pictures displays a fenced seating area which was not part of Danby Lodge and was in fact part of another lodge. With this, our dogs were NOT safe when being let outside as the only door to Danby Lodge was the door that goes straight onto the car park which is shared with others which had cars coming and going. Danby Lodge is also right on the doorstep of another lodge and therefore not private at all with people coming and going. This left us feeling very uncomfortable to sit outside to enjoy the weather and the shared BBQ.

  • "I would definitely recommend it is an idyllic setting, the hot tub was simply gorgeous, a warm (great heating) cottage but we found a few hiccups."

The bathroom towel warmer did not work. The oven instructions were very complicated and we couldn't get it to work. The general organisation is a bit hap hazard - I spent an hour and a half trying to get onto the internet in the cottage it did not work, I was given three codes to three different area's and finally managed to log in but because I was having to use the furthest away router it was not a satisfactory link. I was asked to text requests for the hot tub and other elements but the response was slow, answered half the question, or none at all. This cottage has the potential to be a 10 out of 10 with a little more attention to the detail. I would have liked some proper instructions on finding the lodge like how far it is from the nearest hotel and so on. Shelley the young lady who helped us with the hot tub was brilliant. Thank you Shelley.

Bedrooms are very comfortable and spacious. Downstairs the kitchen is small but has all that is needed. We took our 2 dogs and they loved the walking and playing in the forest. Parking space available. One minor change to the details in the folder is that the fuse box location is wrong as the fuses tripped and took a while to find the unit as stated in the wrong bedroom.
