.The garden was safe for our dog to run around. The road is busy but this is not too noticeable inside .It does have a pavement so you can walk the dog locally . It is a lovely area and the cottage is well placed to explore the area.

  • "A very comfortable, clean and well equipped cottage."

We only stayed a week but for us the location of Dovetail was perfect as it was only about a mile from the River Severn - ideal to see the Severn Bore. Had we stayed longer, the absence of a washing machine may have been an issue, but there really isn't room for one in the compact kitchen. There was some traffic noise, but honestly, after the first night we really didn't notice - and we live in an extremely quiet area. We had a very enjoyable stay and would stay again if we were back in the area.

If you don`t like traffic noise, this is definately NOT the place for you. Traffic is constant. This didn`t bother us though. We had a lovely chilled and relaxed Christmas here. The place was decorated for Christmas, so we didn`t have to bother! The tub of Roses chocolates and bottle of wine were really appreciated. There are plenty of accessable walks too, which our Collie cross Labrador really appreciated. The converted barn was lovely and warm especially with the log burner too!. All facilities were great and although the weather wasn`t very kind it didn`t matter. We has a lovely time and even made it to the Severn Bore pub which was superb and were were made really welcome by the local residents! On the odd good day we did have , walks along the Severn valley way were really appreciated. Lovely and peaceful. The local butchers and farm shop were within easy reach with a car so all in all we had a fabulous time. Thank you Anne and Terry.

Large grassy outside area. Downside was noisy road. OK in double bedroom but not so good in single. Ideal for exploring Forest of Dean anzd Gloucester, Tewkesbury etc just down the road for cultural and retail therapy ! TV reception was poor quite often no signal at all. Some leaflets on the.local attractions would have helped and an easily read map. All in all though good value and welcoming bottle of wine and biscuits was a nice touch. Would book again.

This didn't bother us but might be a problem to others. Also the shower was often cold even though no one else was running water. It os extremely close to the road and though the noise wasn't horrific we did know it was there. There is a secure gate so our dogs couldn't escape and we were aware it might be noisy. The barn had everything we needed and we enjoyed our stay. My only suggestion would be to look at the shower and maybe screen the gates and fences so it felt more private........

  • "We have loved our stay at Dovetail."

It is really peaceful and relaxing. The cottage is provided with everything you could need and quite spacious. It was lovely to wake up to the cows every morning and watch the sunrise. Nice touches of tea, coffee, sugar, wine and a few other bits readily available, thank you! We all had showers every evening after exploring and it did the trick, but it’s not very powerful. Things are a bit mismatched and dated, this did not matter to us, but it would to some. The gate, with the sleepers, is fantastic to keep the dog safe, she loved having space to explore and we could relax knowing she was safe. The road is a 50mph road and extremely busy through the day, however it did not once disturb our sleep or become noticeable when relaxing, it’s constant background noise. The views and immediate surroundings are beautiful. Unfortunately my car broke down while there, but we were saved by the bus stop 1min walk away on either side of the road, this was an excellent service on time both ways, £2 each for any distance journey. Gloucester town is a lovely place to explore with a magnificent cathedral, lots of history and shops. A family of 3 generations and a dog have had a very nice break, we were sad to leave. Thank you

The barn was a lot bigger than expected and very comfortable with good facilities. We found the beds comfortable and pans easy to cook with. The dogs found the cows most entertaining! Weren't very keen on the Severn Bore pub but if you drive 5 mins down the road we loved The Lyon Inn. There were lovely walks near by and friendly cows (3) in field that came up to the fence. The patio area was lovely to sit on the sun shone to the side and came round to back. The Severn Bore pub is the local and very friendly and have WiFi.if you need it. We were all thankful for the technology break hence no signal/WiFi. The Fryday chip shop up next village was beautiful food. Forest Dean, Ross Gardens and more, hence we used Dovetail as stopping point for rest etc. However the double bed needs replacing due to squeeking and creaking and the mattress is past its best. • "As described, the pictures are a good representation."

Very good value for money. Garden is secure for our dogs and has amazing views. Was very clean! Bedrooms smelt fresh. Road did not cause us an issue, described as noisy/busy and it was, had bedroom windows open all night, my husband slept through to 8 am, and so did my son. I'm an early riser, so went for a run most mornings. Footpath along main road on opposite side of road, so once crossed, perfectly safe. Took the lane opposite and numerous options for short 3 mile run or up to about 8 miles. Great for walking the dogs too. Footpath access down left hand side of property, but did have to lift dogs over stiles. However if we walked along main road for 5 mins, there was easy access without stiles. Only about 15 minutes from supermarkets in Gloucester, close to lots of places of interest.

    Reviewed by RachelAug 2021

  • "The description said that there were walks from the cottage but the garden is fully fenced, which is in one way a good thing of course but the gate into the field was padlocked."

The only walk was accessed by the stile and footpath next door, followed by another stile. This meant going out onto the road and these were accessible only to people and we had to try and lift our two Bassett Hounds over both of these to walk, which was very difficult. The traffic noise was constant and went on all night, we were unlucky as there were temporary lights outside the gate, but the road is very busy and the property would be much nicer if effort were made to minimise it, with a fence and hedge perhaps. The property itself was fine but the fridge too small.

The view from the back is very picturesque and it is good having the rear patio with doors opening onto it - it gets the afternoon sun as well. We could let our dog out that way for a wander. There were dog bowls in the cottage. There was a bottle of wine in the fridge when we arrived, a nice touch. The kitchen area is very serviceable as is the shower/toilet, there's always plenty of hot water. The location is really between Minsterworth and Westbury-on-Severn. It takes about thirty five minutes to walk to Westbury. There is a first class pub with quality menu (The Lyon Inn) in Westbury- go there. The nearest pub, some fifteen minutes easy walk, is The Severn Bore which is like a local in character and basic pub grub can be had there. Both places are dog friendly and with good beer gardens. We'd recommend that anyone staying at The Dovetail brings some food supplies as there are no shops around at convenient distance although there is a premier with a limited choice attached to a nearby Esso petrol station as well as a pricey specialist food outlet just opposite the petrol station. There are no shops in Westbury. If anyone thinking of staying here has a need for internet access - there isn't wi-fi, okay for the likes of me but not for some. We had a cracking stay at Dovetail, the four nights went too quickly. It was good value and is a good base for walkers and anyone wishing to visit the Forest of Dean. I'd recommend it.

The cottage itself was really nice - it was very much appreciated to arrive somewhere where even the basics such as tea bags, washing up liquid and some condiments were available along with a bottle of wine and chocolate biscuits! Nice outdoor space with beautiful views (fabulous for star gazing on a clear night). Heads up if you have young children as the gates are open straight on to a busy A road (I'm sure you could close the gates!). Glorious weather definitely helped a stay away in the middle of a pandemic when we weren't sure what would or wouldn't be open. The Forest of Dean was only about 20 minutes drive away, Gloucester the same. We also visited Westbury Court Gardens (National Trust) less than 10 minutes drive away which was nice and had a short river walk from there (Westbury-On-Severn itself has nothing apart from a pub and church!). We went up well equipped with meals ready to heat so can't comment on local pubs, restaurants or take aways. There were big supermarkets all short drives away. WiFi would have been useful. Would normally scoff at such a suggestion when on a holiday, but being self employed did need to do a level of work whilst away so my data took a hammering! As already mentioned, do be mindful if you have young children who could easily escape out of the gates if left open. The driveway can be easily missed too and you are turning in to it off a fast main road so do be careful of tailgating drivers behind. We used the bus shelter opposite as a point of reference! Thank you for a grand stay in a lovely, homely cottage. Perfect for the three of us.

  • "Well situated for the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean."

Ideal for dog; safe and secure garden, and we appreciated having access to the orchard next door as well. Welcomed with home baking, which was lovely. The only snag is the traffic noise, but it didn't bother us because it was autumn and we had the windows shut. But the advert was honest about this, so we were not surprised.

  • "The directions were wrong."

Minsterworth is to the east and Westbury to the west and Sykes had them the other way round. The property was four doors to the east of the school not to the west. Made it difficult for us to find it. We had a wonderful holiday and loved the property and the location. The countryside was lovely and the proximity to the River Severn. Bus stops were only a few yards away so it was easy to visit Gloucester and Forest of Dean villages. The welcome pack was a nice touch and the owners were very helpful.

  • "Lovely views from inside the cottage of the fields beyond with the pet cows and their calves the other side of the fence, could not let my dog out off his lead as there was a large hole underneath the gate which was the entrance to the cottage which led onto one of the busiest roads, no immediate walks from cottage because of this road."

The cottage was comfortable but could not find the radio/cd player. Took our own dvd player for the evenings, only one game in cottage and most of the suggested places of interest did not allow dogs, so had to rely on forest walks. Most pubs did not allow dogs inside and in September it can rain. As we found out after a long walk, lucky there was a large tree with a bench to sit under until it stopped.
