  • “Alms Cottage was a lovely cottage.”

Well stocked and with beautiful details. A good location.

Well stocked and with beautiful details. A good location. Nice and comfortable. Would have been nice to have a foot stool with the sofa for extra comfort but that's just my taste rather than an issue. The only pointer would be is to let people know the garden is not secure for dogs - no gate to close off the garden and low fences. I had taken a long line lead so my boy was quite safe to roam around without getting out.

Almshouse Cottages

Two wonderful, semi-detached holiday cottages situated on the western edge of the Royal Forest of Dean, in the village of English Bicknor. These delightful cottages are full of character and charm, ideal for a family holiday or romantic retreat in an unspoilt part of the country. Each property is set over two floors, with two bedrooms and a family bathroom on the first floor, along with a sitting room, kitchen and dining table downstairs. They also both have their lovely gardens where you can enjoy the sunshine, accompanied by the sound of the birdsong, and dine outdoors. There are many lovely walks and cycle routes to be enjoyed right from the doorstep, or for those who enjoy adrenaline-fuelled activities, try canoeing, abseiling, caving, and the high wire rope course in the forest! There is also opportunity to fish the Wye, or play a round of golf on one of many excellent courses, the nearest being Forest Hills only four miles away. A wonderful pair of cottages for a relaxing break, or a fun-filled adventure, in the Wye Valley AONB!

The property

This cosy, pretty semi-detached cottage is a wonderful holiday base for couples and small families.

The cottage has two bedrooms upstairs; a bright, spacious double bedroom with hanging space, a chest of drawers and pretty views, along with a cosy twin room.

There is also a good-sized family bathroom with a feature fireplace.

Downstairs is a wonderful sitting room where everyone can gather after a long day and relax around a woodburning stove, set inside a beautiful stone fireplace.

There is also a rocking chair by the back door where you can sit and read.

The kitchen is compact but bright and well-equipped, accessed from the porch which is handy for removing muddy walking boots.

It also has a dining table and beautiful Welsh dresser.

Outside is a large lawn where the kids can run around and play, while you enjoy a refreshing drink on the swing seat.

A fantastic base for outdoors enthusiasts visiting the Wye Valley!

About the location

Symonds Yat Rock 3 miles; Symonds Yat 7 miles; Ross-on-Wye 8 miles; Monmouth 8 miles.

The lovely village of English Bicknor, situated on the westerly edge of the Royal Forest of Dean and nestling within the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is one of the ancient villages of the forest, situated at the top of a hill overlooking the valley, and once the site of an ancient motte and bailey castle, the remnants of which can still be seen. The villages of English Bicknor and nearby Symonds Yat are steeped in the history of this fascinating area and offer visitors a vast range of activities and landscapes. The Royal Forest of Dean comprises some 27,000 acres of woodland and provides, through a network of pathways and visitor centres, a chance to explore both its beauty and history. One great attraction is Symonds Yat Rock from which the breathtaking vista takes in the meandering River Wye and the distant hills of Herefordshire and Wales. Close by is the famous Goodrich Castle, a perfect example of a 12th century marcher castle, while just 8 miles away are the historic market towns of Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth. These attractive riverside towns make a great day out, offering a mix of elegant Victorian courtyards and timbered Tudor houses as well as excellent shops, pubs and restaurants to suit every taste. Stroll along the riverbank, take a cruise along the river or view the surrounding countryside from a hot air balloon. Enjoy trips to Chepstow, Tintern, Hay-on-Wye, the Black Mountains, Gloucester, Cheltenham and the Cotswolds. The historic town of Hereford, with its magnificent cathedral housing the Mappa Mundi ancient map of the world, is also well worth a visit.
