  • "We enjoyed our week at Ostlers."

The substantial welcome pack was good to receive on our arrival with treats for both humans and canines. Ostlers is a cosy, clean, well equipped cottage with a good outside space. The cottage was a perfectly good size for the two of us and our dog. The owner lives nearby. She was very friendly and gave us ideas on pubs and restaurants. The weather was mostly very good during our stay and so we spent a lot of time walking trails in the Forest of Dean to get some shade for our dog. We drove to Ross on Wye where we walked by the river, Symonds Yat and Monmouth. All are worth a visit. We had one meal out at the Farmer's Boy Inn at Longhope. The staff were very friendly, definitely dog friendly and the food was good, especially if you like a pies!

  • "The welcome goodies were excellent - scones, jam, cream, butter, milk, tea & coffee."

No need to rush to local shop to stock up. Lovely converted stables in good location although would be a little cramped for 4 adults. Would book again without hesitation for the 2 of us

The owner, Pat, was very friendly and helpful, leaving us a welcome pack of home made scones jam and cream as well as milk, marmalade and bread. Even our dog was left some treats. The cottage was well appointed, comfortable and decorated to very high standard. The cottage was also very well positioned, in a quiet street, but close to many attractions just a short drive away, a lovely location We will definitely like to return again in the near future.

  • "A lovely welcoming cottage, very peaceful location with a well stocked Co-Op store around the corner."

Pat, the owner, is helpful and friendly as are the local inhabitants. The enclosed courtyard is patio and gravel - great for sun worship and al fresco dining. Our dog and several others headed for the nearby grass and bracken hillside. Just past the church, designated for dogs' enjoyment, and providing extensive views. Thoroughly recommended.

Ostlers was so comfortable, warm and snug. Well equipped with the added bonus of a lovely private garden, a bit of a sun trap so even in October we could sit outside. The owner was very helpful and left the most delicious cream tea and home made marmalade as well as other essentials on arrival. A great base for exploring the Cotswolds

Pat had kindly left us fresh bread, milk and butter also homemade scones with clotted cream and jam, all very delicious. Ostlers is a very nice conversion of an old stable and we were very impressed with the comfortable modern accommodation tucked away down a narrow lane with the local convenience food store just a few minutes walk away. We visited Gloucester, Ledbury, Hereford, Ross on Wye and Chepstow with ease by car and also walks in the Forest of Dean.

  • "Two bathrooms was what we needed but didn't know one was downstairs and as we were two elderly couples that wasn't ideal."

However both bathrooms were beautifully appointed. We realize this was a cottage and cottages are usually on the small side but it was a bit of a nuisance to have to drag out a table and chairs for mealtimes. Our host Pat Nixon was wonderful and very friendly. We arrived to scones and jam and cream left for us plus several useful staples. She couldn't have done more. Parking tricky for two cars a bit tricky and a very tight turn into the lane. Ideal for a walking holiday and some wonderful pubs around for good food

Ross-on-Wye 6 miles; Gloucester 13 miles.

The thriving village of Mitcheldean, with its old timbered houses and narrow streets is situated close to the magnificent Royal Forest of Dean, England's largest oak forest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The forest offers numerous trails that can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by horseback. Caving, abseiling and a high wire rope course are on offer for the more adventurous, whilst fishing, golf, kayaking and canoeing are other popular activities in this unspoilt area. Just a short drive away, in the historic waterfront city of Gloucester, you will find Roman foundations, Victorian Docklands and a spectacular Norman Cathedral (whose cloisters were used as a location in the Harry Potter films). Also within easy reach are the historic market town of Ross-on-Wye, in the heart of rural Herefordshire, boasting timbered Tudor houses and excellent shops, pubs and restaurants, and The Severn Estuary, famous for its tidal bore, which is a delight for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts and bore surfers alike.
