  • "An excellent choice."

This delightful house has the most amazing views over the Severn and in July the dawn sky was beautiful. The house itself is comfortable, spotlessly clean and extremely well supplied with everything two people could need, all in good working order. The steep terrain could be a problem for people with mobility problems, but this reviewer, with 2 recent knee replacements, coped fine. Thoroughly recommended.

  • "Well maintained and comfortable but it is an old cottage so dark downstairs."

However, the light on the landing office area with the magnificent view of the Severn was a bonus. Only addition I would like would be a small seat at the front of the house to benefit from the views outside!

What a fantastic view from the bedroom window. Only small gripe is that there were quite a few cobwebs ( and dead spiders ) hanging about. Appreciate that the little spider rascals will always get into older buildings but some of these had been there a while. Did not spoil our stay though.

Comfortable cottage and in a lovely setting. Well equipped and comprehensive instructions on use of equipment / facilities. Did experience difficulty with the ceramic hob ( need to push controls hard ), but never used this type of hob before. Parking opposite the house could be awkward given limited space , steep slope ,and mud when wet. On balance a a very pleasant cottage in a picturesque area. Thank you.

  • "Really loved the views the walking plus garden, the cottage wasn't what we expected in comfort sadly the sofas were small and uncomfortable not in keeping with cosiness next to a log burner so we decided to sit on the floor with pillows and blankets felt more romantic."

..the main bed in the bedroom was like sleeping on board we both have never slept on anything so awful it felt like a cheap mattress, so luckily in the second room we spotted the sofa bed and the next night slept there for the rest of are holiday it was slightly more better if anything, I can't understand why the second room is not used as the main bedroom going out onto the garden plus the toilet and shower being located there and plus no road noise but I guess the owner is relying on the views rather then the layout and comfort of the cottage, it was also the small things like we kept tripping on the floor matts down stairs as they kept moving about or no trays to put your food on to sit near the fire (a big selling point log burner) rather then a big dining table, are stay was good I don't want to sound bad as it is a beautiful location plus the garden was just great to relax in, the cottage was lovely it just needs the homely touch in comfort really and the two main things for that are sofas and beds, but will definitely head back to that location again and hopefully if any changes to the cottage would definitely return.

Many thanks for for your helpful feedback, Terry. I am glad you enjoyed the amazing views and the garden. I am sorry to hear that you found the bed and sofa uncomfortable. I quite agree that the sofa upstairs is more comfortable than the one in the sitting room. My late husband and I bought the one downstairs to support our backs and make us sit up properly when watching TV! I am also sorry to hear your concerns about the mattress. It was in fact very expensive, but it is firm. I chose it in the hope that it would provide effective support for the back and might last longer that the previous one. However, I agree that it is probably firmer than I anticipated. I am saving up to replace it with a medium one. In the meantime, I will upgrade the mattress topper when I am next at Gordon's View at the end of the month. I am also looking for a new runner to protect the carpet in the sitting room. The current ones do sometimes have a mind of their own! I do hope that one day you will find your way back to Gordon's View, to enjoy the views and the garden again - in more comfort! Property Owner

  • "Amazing location and views over the Severn and Forest of Dean literally outside the back door."

This has been a very well equipped and comfortable place but is a little tired and in need of some refreshment. The bed was very uncomfortable and the creeping carpets a real trip risk. It would also be advisable to point out the steepness of the outdoor steps and internal staircase as not possibly being suitable for everyone. Manoeuvring the refuse bins for collection was challenging particularly as the access door couldn’t be opened.

The private back garden is a very unexpected asset with wonderful views of the horseshoe bend of the river Severn down below in Newnham, especially from the strategically placed bench at the top. It's only a 10 minute walk into Littledean where there is a great Fish & Chip Shop, a small grocery store and a hotel providing 'pub food'. Cinderford is 2 miles away with lots more 'Takeaways' and 'Lidl'. Kudos to Wendy the housekeeper as this quirky cottage must be a nightmare to clean with all its nooks and crannies! The provision of milk in the fridge and fresh flowers on the table were also much appreciated!

How do you ever turn on/off bath taps behind shower screen in bathroom, wrong tap does not fit sink, work the television find a channel you want to watch, access bathroom from bedroom down step. Books under stairs dare not even go near, as cobwebs and dust prominent, what on earth all books and such on landing at top of stairs don't even go there, told in red guide book all had been cleaned and treated. untrue. How many this cottage is supposed to cater for (i thought two) as 22 mugs in cupboard along with cups and saucers, cutlery in every drawer possibly for people using 22 mugs and more. I can appreciate it being old cottage but it just does work DIY DISASTER. Are not all electrical appliances supposed to be pact tested?

Sorry to hear Gordon’s View didn’t live up to your expectations, Terry. You are absolutely right that the books under the stairs had got a bit dusty, since I wrote the entry in the red file! I assure you that all the books and games have now been thoroughly dusted and sprayed. It is also true that the doormat and the other mats sometimes have a mind of their own, but they are there to keep the carpet clean, as this is the main entry to the cottage. I am somewhat puzzled by your other comments. For example, the shower screen in the bathroom is hinged at the wall and simply has to be pulled back to gain access to the taps on the bath. PAT testing is not actually a legal requirement for appliances in furnished holiday lets, but I assure you they are all regularly checked. The key safe in the glazed porch is placed discreetly just below the shelf, for security reasons. Being built in the eighteenth century and extended in the nineteenth century, Gordon’s View is certainly unique with an interesting layout on a number of levels. Its character and comfort has been much appreciated by a large number of guests over the last ten years. Julia Margretts (Owner) Property Owner

Well equipped and spotlessly clean. It doesn't have private parking, next door was working on their property and were very accommodating, so it wasn't a problem for us. Gloucester, Ross on Wye and Monmouth are all about a 30 mins drive away. Plenty of walks in the Forest of Dean. The old traditional cinema in Cinderford is well worth a visit, £6.00 a ticket to see the latest Bond film. • "The cottage was charming and very well equipped."

The view of the River Severn and the Cotswolds beyond from the front windows has to be among the most spectacular in England. The owner, with whom we had to communicate several times because of a problem with a broken kettle, was pleasant and helpful too. This is the second time we have rented a holiday cottage this year. On both occasions, we have been left wondering why cottage rental companies are not more transparent about one aspect of the properties they advertise which can affect people, like ourselves, who are light sleepers or sensitive to noise. Both were located on fairly busy minor roads. Both had bedrooms on the front of the property, facing the road. It doesn't tend to be a problem at night, but cars begin to pass the door of Gordon's View at about 5 in the morning and traffic rises to a peak of about one car every minute or so during peak hours. It is only by about 9 pm that the peace and quiet of the country start to return. Could I suggest that you consider some sort of rating system for properties which would give potential customers an indication of how quiet, remote or traffic-free a cottage is? It would relieve a considerable amount of anxiety and would help to ensure that future clients can be sure of being able to unwind and leave the world behind for a week if they wish to.
