  • "The maintenance of this property is a disgrace."

We did not complain to the owners because of the sheer number of issues we had. Where to start: mold is present on all the walls. Kitchen: dirty uncleaned oven, cutlery old and damaged, drawers with crumbs in and dirty drawer tops, microwave rusty and damaged, fridge door needs forcing to close. Waste bin in cupboard with pans, frying pan with grease in it,no storage for food items. Bathroom only accessible by stooping. Bathroom shower cubicle dirty and moldy. Place mats on table dirty and moldy. Window frames extremely dirty with cracked glass in some and not been cleaned for some time. A kind of home made secondary glazing that does not permit opening. Cobwebs everywhere. No washing machine, no hoover, the long brush provided was full of debris and cobwebs, no mop or bucket. Basically it is a one room property with a minstrel gallery with a kitchen and bathroom tagged on the rear wall. In fairness the property has an excellent wood burner with a plentiful supply of wood and a comfortable bed, the only seating apart from dining chairs is a very tired sofa.

  • "This is a lovely cottage in an excellent location."

Very clean and well equipped. The garden area is nice and the bed very comfortable. However, this cottage is not built for a comfortable stay. The spiral staircase is very small and especially difficult if carrying something (loose rails suggest others have found it a tight squeeze too), the sofa is very uncomfortable and one has to stoop significantly through to the bathroom. I understand it is 17th century, I live in a 17th century property myself, but the listing is not clear about these things.

1.Broken arm chair. 2. The sofa is past its sell by date, uncomfortable and needs replacing. 3.Stair access to bedroom is awkward and too narrow.

.Eightlands Cottage is absolutely beautiful. Fiona greeted us on arrival, she was lovely and so welcoming. The cottage is charming, everything you need for a romantic break for two people. The weather was fantastic while we were there so we made use of the cottages lovely garden. If you wanted to use the wood burning stove (which we did some evenings) Fiona informed us that there was a wood shed in the garden and we could just help ourselves to logs. We thought this was so generous and we have never had this in any cottage we have rented before. It’s a very short walk along a path to the local pub ‘The bunch of Carrots which is really lovely, It has a beautiful beer garden and does a great carvery every day. Hereford is a few miles walk away and we had some great days out in Ledbury, Ludlow & Leominster which are all a short drive away. I cannot rate this cottage highly enough. I would highly recommend and we will definitely be returning in the future. Thank you Fiona & Mark

So quaint and charming, it is ideal for a couple to stay in for a couple of days or longer. The owners live just next door but you wouldn't really know as they kept themselves very much to themselves. Parking right next to the property is perfect and the bed was so comfortable. We loved having the fireplace and now this is something we would always look for in a stay away property. There was however a few little points that we noticed... 1. there was a couple of cracked windows that let water in when i rained (which it did a lot) as it did by the fireplace - not a problem just to be aware of 2. some of the unit doors and fridge in the kitchen caught on the adjoining cupboard so didn't close properly 3. the shower is very tight for space which is understandable in a small property but just a point to note again 4. we struggled with the oven in the kitchen and eventually managed to work it out - a manual or a brief starter guide to the oven would be helpful Please do not think these bit detracted from our stay... we loved it and certainly would return to this delightful little property.

  • "A perfect Christmas experience."

Eightlands is a delightful little cottage, so cosy, tastefully renovated and furnished, and well equipped. Xmas tree and decorations superb. Welcome little touches on arrival included a bowl of chocs, milk in fridge, biscuits, tea, coffee and toiletries. Woodburner roaring away. The hosts, Fiona and Mark, who live next door are very kind and helpful yet discrete and the best we have experienced. The bed is the most comfortable we have ever slept in away from home. There is a plug-in nightlight to help guide you down the spiral staircase at night if you need to use the facilities. We took a torch just in case, but didn't need it. Some tips which readers might find helpful: 1. The main source of heat is the woodburner. All the wood you could possibly need is provided in a dedicated shed in the private garden. Correctly controlled, the woodburner can remain ticking over for long periods eg, overnight, ready for you to bring it back to life in the morning. We only needed to re-light it once during our whole 7 night break. Full instructions are provided in the woodburner manual. Best overnight setting we found was to open the lower slide vent to approx 1 cm. 2. If taking your break during wet weather and you want to take a walk along the riverside or footpaths through the fields, wellies are a must. 3. Listing indicates shop within 1 mile. Nearest shop is about 2 miles. 4. The 'Devolo' WiFi is superb and we had no problems with EE network coverage. I think that's it - oh, don't forget to duck when entering the bathroom! Finally, very many thanks to Fiona and Mark for the use of their beautiful little cottage.

I think the only drawback to be aware of , and we are now 70yrs, is that the spiral staircase is very steep and has to be negotiated in order to reach the bathroom at night. Also the constant stooping to access the bathroom, and we are not tall, can be quite wearing, resulting in bumped heads if you lose concentration. The bed is super comfy though and the silence meant we slept like logs! We really enjoyed our stay.

About the location

HEREFORD

Leominster 14 miles.

The cathedral city of Hereford dates back to Saxon times, and with its medieval bridge over the winding River Wye it is the very image of picturesque England. With a mix of buildings from almost every British era, eclectic Hereford is a popular base for those seeking to explore the locale – being ideally placed for accessing the Black and White villages of the region, not to mention the delights of neighbouring Shropshire, Worcestershire and The Cotswolds. Famous as a cider producing town, Hereford is also the home of the Mappa Mundi, the largest and most elaborate pre-15th century map in existence, which resides in the cathedral alongside the famous Chained Library – a collection of over 1500 rare books from as early as the 8th century. Nearby is the half timbered town of Leominster, filled with medieval buildings, often overhanging the street, and also accessible is the natural splendour of Symonds Yat, a rocky outcrop on a 5 mile bend of the River Wye, with spectacular views and the opportunity to spot protected peregrine falcons flying from their nests.
