A haven of peaceful rest. Glorious countryside. Plenty of interesting places to visit - many within a 10 mile radius of the property. We wish we had taken our bikes! The welcome from the owners was so friendly. The smell of fresh baked bread on the side with flowers from the garden on the table and then a bottle of fizz in the fridge. What more could anyone ask! The accommodation was finished to a very high, modern, standard, but still retained the character of the original cow shed, with original brickwork and beams. The place felt very homely with some well thought out touches to make it feel more like a home you are borrowing than a holiday rental. The owners live in a connecting barn but judged the level of contact perfectly. There if you had a question, or just a chat about the area, but didn't intrude. You are 15 mins from Hereford and there are a number of other small towns and villages all within a short drive. Ludlow and it's market is well worth a visit. We found some lovely walks around the cottage and nearby and many more a short drive away.

  • "A truly wonderful countryside holiday home."

Sarah and Paul, the owners, could not do enough for us. Fred's Shed is a real credit to them. They have renovated the barn beautifully with it's rustic, country quirks and homely feel. We felt at home from the minute we stepped inside (So did our dog, Ralphy!) There was plenty of room for 4 adults and the dog. There is a gorgeous outdoor space for an afternoon drink, and our very own huge paddock for the dog to roam too. Every detail had been carefully considered from the dog treats, home-made bread, Nespresso machine pods to the fresh flowers. Fred's Shed is in a beautiful, countryside location and is situated perfectly to explore Herefordshire. (Eastnor castle, Symonds Yat - Ross On Wye, Breacon Beacon, Malvern Hills to name a few.) There are some fantastic countryside pubs (dog-friendly) and restaurants in the local area too. I would definitely recommend Fred's Shed and would return! Thank you for a fantastic stay.

  • "Fred's Shed has a beautifully designed, Scandinavian-style interior."

It has exposed beams, exposed stone and brick, and pieces of repurposed wood with walls that are grey and white. We really liked it. The friendly, helpful owners are just next door if you need anything. The mattresses were very comfortable - they felt firm and supportive. The kitchen had good saucepans, tin foil, cling film and washing up liquid. The fridge is a larder fridge with a small freezer compartment, so don't buy too much food in one go. There was good attention to detail, such as nightlights that come on automatically in the kitchen and lounge to illumiate the way in the middle of the night. It's quite an intimate property. For example, the doors to one of the bedrooms and the bathroom slide (leaving slight gaps), so the doors are a little less soundproof than conventional doors. One bedroom got a little loud when the heating came on at 6.30am. It sounded like the boiler and pipes were right next door. So that may be a small issue if you are a light sleeper. The shower had great water pressure and plenty of hot water. Overall, we had a lovely time and would certainly consider returning.

The property

Nestled in the tranquil Herefordshire countryside, just outside of the city of Hereford, lies Freds Shed, a gorgeous single-storey barn conversion perfect for a couple or two to escape to this picturesque part of the country.

Named after the once feral cat who had taken refuge in the barn, Freds Shed is an idyllic base surrounded by green landscapes while being close to nearby attractions, you can see why over time Fred had become loving and tame, content to live a few paces away on the owners' grounds.

Now refurbished into a wonderfully characterful dwelling, this barn conversion is sure to be a home away from home for your next holiday offering off-road parking and delightful views over the encompassing greenery.

Stepping into the property, the open-plan living space invites you in after a long day of discovering the local area; kick off your shoes and settle in for the evening on the plush corner sofa while you catch up on your favourite programmes on the TV.

The space is bursting with character, boasting original wooden beams throughout as well as a stylish décor which really elevates the feeling of a luxurious farmhouse escape.

Moving through the property, the kitchen is home to all the appliances you need to assist you with your self-catering requirements such as an electric oven and hob, a microwave, and a handy washer/dryer to refresh your clothes.

Whip up tasty feasts for the group to enjoy at the dining table while you catch up on the day's events, before retiring to the bedrooms for some well-earned rest.

The first bedroom is home to a plush double bed, wooden feature walls and charming wooden shutters, creating a space for you to cosy up and rest your head ahead of another action-packed day of exploring.

The second bedroom is located at the other end of the property, ideal for couples to escape to their sleeping quarters for some peace and quiet, here you will find another plush double bed as well as exposed brick and whitewashed walls, and a lovingly crafted name plate, rejuvenated from original materials found in the barn prior to its conversion.

Guests will benefit from a bathroom, fit with a bath, shower over, basin and WC where you can freshen up ahead of your day, or soak in a bubble bath on return from a long walk in the countryside.

Outside, there is a small seating area on the patio, accessed through a traditional barn door, so you can take your dining al fresco in the evenings.

If you don't fancy cooking, head into the city of Hereford for a bite to eat; you will be spoilt for choice with the many eateries in the city centre, why not try La Madelaine for lunch and a coffee and cake stop, or perhaps give The Beefy Boys a try for rustic and hearty meals in the evenings.

The area is home to a wealth of attractions for you to discover throughout your trip, including the Waterworks Museum and the Hereford Museum and Art Gallery; each host fascinating exhibitions focussing on the development of Hereford through the years on cultural and industrial levels.

Nature lovers will enjoy a day at the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo, home to tropical butterflies and exotic plants while being just walking distance from the magnificent Forest of Dean.

There are a number of National Trust sites you can visit on your travels, notably Berrington Hall, a neoclassical mansion with stunning grounds and gardens surrounding it, and Croft Castle and Parkland, a picturesque castle encompassed by 1500 acres of woodland for you to discover.

Brush up on your history while in this rich city; Mappa Mundi & Chained Library Exhibitions are housed in the Hereford Cathedral which makes for a captivating day out for history buffs and tourists alike.

Freds Shed is the ideal retreat for a relaxing holiday with your loved ones any time of year.

About the location

HEREFORD

Leominster 14 miles.

The cathedral city of Hereford dates back to Saxon times, and with its medieval bridge over the winding River Wye it is the very image of picturesque England. With a mix of buildings from almost every British era, eclectic Hereford is a popular base for those seeking to explore the locale – being ideally placed for accessing the Black and White villages of the region, not to mention the delights of neighbouring Shropshire, Worcestershire and The Cotswolds. Famous as a cider producing town, Hereford is also the home of the Mappa Mundi, the largest and most elaborate pre-15th century map in existence, which resides in the cathedral alongside the famous Chained Library – a collection of over 1500 rare books from as early as the 8th century. Nearby is the half timbered town of Leominster, filled with medieval buildings, often overhanging the street, and also accessible is the natural splendour of Symonds Yat, a rocky outcrop on a 5 mile bend of the River Wye, with spectacular views and the opportunity to spot protected peregrine falcons flying from their nests.
