  • "A lovely, historic and welcoming place to stay."

The house set in large and beautiful and well-tended gardens where you are encourage to explore and enjoy. The owners made us feel very welcome and we enjoyed the little extras like the lemon drizzle cake on arrival. The rooms were very spacious and furnished with love. The view from the top of the garden was amazing and the grass tennis court much enjoyed by our teenagers espcially the odd random bounce causing much merriment. We would definitely recommend and stay again.

Delighted you all enjoyed your stay and what the grounds have to offer. Yes, balls on the tennis lawn do bounce very low or at an angle sometimes but grass is so much kinder on the knees - not that teenagers would be concerned with that! Thank you for staying with us. Do come again. Pauline and James Property Owner

The grounds are there for your use including a croquet lawn .True not at match standard but great fun Lunch in the grounds just choose where. The owners are very caring making sure our suitcases were taken up and down the stairs. Very clean, Very comfortable ,and Very Quirky. We loved it Mary

We loved the sound of your croquet mallets hitting the ball and great you enjoyed your games as well as our grounds. The weather could have been slightly kinder to you but as you said, this is England!! Property Owner

  • "Spacious, comfortable, very well equipped period property."

Beautiful setting and wonderful gardens. Excellent communication with owners prior to our stay and a lovely welcome pack of home-made goodies to enjoy on our arrival. Fresh flowers were a really super extra addition and made the accommodation seem personalised. Unfortunately, if you had wished to play tennis you would not be able to do so as the 'tennis court' was not there - it was a lawned, flat, but unmarked area and most certainly not 'play-ready' The Wi-fi is very intermittent and whilst we didn't wish to spend the holiday browsing the internet it is, unfortunately, vital today for making bookings (restaurants and cycling day bookings were lengthy procedures) We do, of course, appreciate the age of the property but we found the plumbing noises from other areas of the house very loud at 6 am during our stay. All in all we enjoyed our stay here and it was a very good location for exploring the Forest of Dean area of Gloucestershire.

Delighted you found the property comfortable and that you enjoyed the garden. Thank you for the feedback on the pre-visit communication. We set up the tennis court or croquet lawn depending on what our guests wish to play. As you declined my offer twice about setting up the court, I assumed you had not wanted to play. The court can be made play ready in under the hour with full white lines. I am sorry you had a problem with the internet. Our gigaclear connection is very strong normally. But glad you enjoyed the stay nonetheless. Property Owner

Some of the best nights sleep I've had for months as beds were so comfy.Welcome pack of scones and jam/marmalade didn't last long presented by Pauline the perfect host, she was so helpful. The 'pièce de résistance' was the garden as a most peaceful and beautiful addition to the apartment which we used every day after long walks in the Forest of Dean. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing break. Mike & Sue

The gardens are clearly a labour of love and are fabulous. The apartment is very comfortable and has all that we needed for a week away. The owners, Pauline and James could not have been more helpful during our stay. There is so much to see and do in the area and Dean Hall was an ideal location for day trips to both the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds. We particularly enjoyed discovering the fine English wines produced in the area.

Thank you Janet and Paul for your feedback. You have highlighted what is probably nor that well known which is that there are some fine wines that are grown locally! It oozes history, both inside and out. We were fascinated to read about the building’s heritage, awed by the ancient trees and delighted to get a glimpse of the rare bats! The apartment ticks all the boxes in terms of comfort and convenience but it is the ‘added extras’ that enhance this holiday experience. Home-made cakes and jams on arrival, local wine to sample and freshly picked flowers. This is the perfect stay for anyone with an interest in history or who loves a good garden or has an interest in wildlife … or ideally all three! Reading this, you’ll gather we had a good time!

..what a find! We were desperately looking for a last minute property as our New Year's Eve plans were scuppered by a friend getting Covid. We struck gold with Dean Hall. It is the most beautiful old house with a really cosy, yet huge, apartment which the delightful owners rent out. Pauline and James provide everything that you need to make your stay wonderful......delicious local wine, homemade jam and scones, flowers, lovely soaps and shower gels, the most comfortable beds ever, wonderful shower and bath and so many other little things that you need on holiday and don't realise until you haven't got them. They are very kind, interesting people and so,so welcoming. They clearly love their wonderful home and it shows through in everything that they do there. Our stay felt like a huge big hug and we have returned to the "real world" reinvigorated and ready to face whatever 2022 throws at us. Thank you Pauline and James...it was an honour to stay with you in Dean Hall.

  • "This is a really characterful old property (some of the internal walls are around 18 inches thick!"

) and because of this you have to embrace its charm and be prepared to accept a few idiosyncrasies that come with a property of this age. In the main these are restricted height to a few of the interior doors (those over 5ft may need to duck or grouse!) and the short but steep flight of stairs that you need to negotiate to gain access the property (which could be a problem for people not too steady on their legs!). However once inside the property all rooms are on one level and you find a very clean comfortable well appointed spacious apartment. Pauline and James made us feel very welcome and provided us with fresh scones with homemade jam and cream (delicious!) and a bottle of locally produced fruity red wine from the nearby Newent vinery. From the master bedroom a beautiful view over the extensive gardens and entertainment from the numerous birds and squirrels at the bird feeder just outside the window! The second bedroom also overlooks the gardens Overall a lovely well appointed characterful property and a great place to relax within its extensive gardens (about 4 acres!!). Would certainly be looking for a return visit!

The accommodation was excellent with everything that you could possibly need. The grounds are beautiful and Pauline and James are very good hosts. You arrive with a bottle of wine and milk in the fridge, home made cake, jams, marmalade which was great after a long journey. There are plenty of things to do in the area, local walks. You do need a car to go out and about. For us this was a great find.

  • "The accommodation is charming, comfortable, well equipped and practical - once you get used to the low doorways!"

The eclectic art collection is interesting and the wildlike (especially the bats) is delightful. The lovely 'work in progess' garden has provided lots of ideas to take home. Littledean, on the edge of the forest, must have some of the most spectacular views in the country. We have had a wonderful relaxing stay. Thank you...

  • "This is a charming apartment in a Wing of historic Dean Hall."

It sounds grand and it is grand! The grounds are tastefully planted with interesting flowers and shrubs, making them a haven for wildlife. The house is very historic and we were interested to read the material about its history in the folder. James and Pauline will be happy to enlarge on this if you ask. There are lots of interesting places to visit, either walking or by car. A must is Gloucester Cathedral and Bourton on the Water - the most celebrated Cotswold village - it is busy but worth a visit. We will return!

  • "A wonderful base for exploring The Forest of Dean and charming villages and towns."

But this estate ranks above everything for its gardens history and comfort. The gardens and wildlife including cats, Billy and Sam, are enough to prevent you from straying from the front gate. Further afield, Sunday roast lunch at the Saracens Head pub, Symonds Yat East is a must do. A morning in beautiful Ledbury and lunch at the Talbot Inn is another must. Many thanks to our hosts and we can only admire you for your passion and for your gardens and historic manor.

Tucked away from the main house, but with lovely views.

  • "What can I say?"

The welcome, quality of the accommodation, spotlessly clean, stunning garden, the welcome pack, information provided, fantastic hosts, I can't praise it enough.

  • "Very spcious and comfortable apartment."

A great base for exploring the forest and also the Wye Valley. We can recommend Monmouth and Bistro Prego for food, Ross-on-Wye and Wilton court, Gloucester Cathedral and Docks and of course, the amazing Symonds Yat for unrivaled views. So much to see and do - we shall have to come back! Thank you.

  • "As we wanted to revisit the Forest of Dean after spending many years caravaning there, we wanted to stay somewhere quiet and peaceful."

This fits the bill perfectly. The apartment is spacious and well stocked with everything we wanted. It is within walking distance of the village with its convenience store and two pubs. The gardens are lovely and guests are welcome to wander ,and even have a barbq! One thing to look out for is the daily emergence of bats from the barn outside the front door. A delight every evening at dusk. One drawback is the short steep stairs from the front door to the rest of the apartment, everything else is on one floor. The owners live in another part of the large mansion sized house and made us very welcome.

  • "What a wonderful place to stay!"

...We enjoyed the rooms, the amenities, the views throughout the windows and from the garden places, the quietness - and owls - at night... and last but not least, it's a very good place to start day-trips! We enjoyed cycling and rambling in The Forest of Dean and The Feast of St Mary's in Gloucester Catheral.

Dean Hall Apartment has its own separate entrance.

It is on the first floor of the South East wing and accessed up some steep stairs, with banisters on both sides.

Dean Hall Apartment provides very spacious and well presented luxury accommodation and has deservedly been awarded 4 stars Gold by Visit England. This wonderful property is steeped in history and was the site of Civil War skirmishes in the 1660s.

Within a few minutes’ walk from the Hall, you reach the breathtaking Forest of Dean which has enough paths for a lifetime of discovery.

The Hall itself is approached through beautiful cast iron gates, down a long drive that is flanked by millions of mauve crocuses in early spring and massive sweet chestnut trees along the drive that are over 350 years old.

South facing, light and extremely spacious, covering approx. 1200 sq.

ft, the interior of the apartment has been refurbished to an exceptionally high standard.

The sitting room is bathed in sunlight in the summer.

In the autumn, winter and early spring months, it is very warm and cosy and has a log burner, with a starter pack of logs, kindling and firelighters provided.

Dean Hall provides a comfortable and relaxing base for a holiday in this unspoilt part of Gloucestershire.

With two separate bathrooms, this is an ideal property for two couples.

You will not be disappointed. Guests have the shared use of the beautiful and extensive grounds surrounding the house.

There are numerous places to sit and enjoy the grounds and relax with a drink or over a meal.

A BBQ is provided and for the more energetic, there is a lawn tennis court that can also be used for a game of croquet.

The owners provide racquets and mallets, but keen tennis players may wish to bring their own racquets.

Guests are invited to help themselves to the fruit and vegetables that are in season from the orchard, soft fruit area and large vegetable patch.

The Welcome Pack that awaits guests includes homemade marmalade, jams, and scones or cake.

Basic essentials such as tea, coffee, sugar, butter, milk and cooking oil are provided as a starter pack.

Dean Hall is central to many outdoor activities and has a barn for bike, canoe and kayak storage.

A bonus is the heated boot room in which guests can hang any wet clothing and walking boots to dry.
