  • "Lovely place to stay."

Was made very welcome. A Delicious welcome pack left of fresh scones, homemade Jam and local wine. A well equipped cottage with very comfy beds. Beautiful garden even in the winter, plus got to see it in the snow. Very central to most places and not far from restaurants/pubs that served good food.

Thank you for your wonderful feedback. The welcome goodies sound delicious. We are so pleased you loved the location and were so well looked after. Best wishes Manor Cottages. Property Owner

Fantastic building and wonderful setting and we would recommend to anybody, with the Owners providing just the right amount of hands on care

The history of the house is amazing and pleased this was appreciated. In spite of the fact it was the site of a pretty grim civil war skirmish, there is such tranquillity in the setting. Thank you for booking with us. Pauline and James Property Owner

OS app really helpful for negotiating the byways and knowing where you are. To end our stay even managed to throw some pots with Georgie the local potter, a true delight. So a really enjoyable stay. ! The gardens were such a pleasure to roam and sit in. Pauline and James were wonderful hosts. We felt we were surrounded by history, sadly we didn’t see any ghosts! But we did see the Horseshoe bats. So much to see and do in the surrounding area. Forest of Dean sculpture trail, puzzle wood, Raglan Castle, Eastnor Castle, Little Dean jail and much more. And there’s a Tesco 2 minutes away!! Would definitely recommend this lovely apartment.

It was really good to observe from afar how you were enjoying the garden. What wonderful weather you had too. Thank you very much for your recommendation. Pauline and James Property Owner

What an amazing place to stay. The flat is very comfortable, being really old the rooms are amazing, you really feel like you have stepped back in time. The most comfortable large beds I have ever slept in. Ideal for two couples. Small but easy managed kitchen diner. Lovely comfy lounge, we did not need the log burner but there if needed. We loved watching the bats at dusk flying in and out of the barn opposite. The gardens are fabulous, so many place to sit and enjoy and just relax. We spent most evening sat quietly in the garden reading, drinking wine and listening to the wildlife. If you want a totally relaxing experience then this is the place for you. No good for anyone who has mobility issues or young children as the steps into the flat are very steep!! Pauline and James make you feel very welcome and what they have achieved with the property is a great legacy to them. Handy for the Forest of Dean. Gloucester or Hertfordshire. The fish and chip shop in littledean village is good as well. Enjoy we did.

We agree the wildlife is amazing. Current guests saw a hedgehog in the courtyard last evening and an owl on a branch near the house. Thank you for enjoying your stay with us Tina and sharing your experience for our future guests! Pauline and James Property Owner

  • "This apartment was part of a 500 year old house and it’s situation was in a cobbled yard, containing coachhouses, facing the front door."

The apartment was decorated to reflect the history of the house and the furniture was very comfy and sympathetic to it. The four-acre garden is a delight to explore, with garden seats and benches scattered throughout for rest or a snooze. The birds were nesting when we were there so it was a busy time in the bushes and trees. The day before we left there was a young stag in the garden, which is wilded in part and has some fantastic views. We had a lovely time.

Thank you for booking with us Lionel and Jenny. Your description captures very accurately the location of the house and its wildlife busy garden. Regrettably deer and roses don't work, as the deer love the young emerging leaves but we have given up worrying about that. Thankfully they appear to leave the cammasia and bluebells alone in the wild garden. So pleased you enjoyed your week. Pauline and James Property Owner

Peaceful, cosy and relaxing in beautiful surroundings. A warm welcome by the owners and a very much appreciated Welcome pack of homemade cake, bottle of wine and snacks. Rooms were tastefully decorated in line with age of property and everywhere was extremely clean. High quality bedding and furnishings made the whole holiday comfortable and a treat. Added bonus of a supply of logs for the wood burner….luxury for us as we normally have to chop our own at home! There were only two of us but there is more than enough space for two couples to enjoy. We will return!

The apartment was clean and spacious with very comfy beds. Nice touches were welcomed such as bathrobes, toiletries and kitchen cleaning products provided. The welcome patch was amazing - fresh milk, home made jam, home grown tomatoes and home made scones. Such a lovely touch. Jane and Pauline are very welcoming and really do encourage you to make use of the gardens, which are set in 4 acres, with thought gone into having multiple areas with garden furniture to sit and enjoy the gardens. Not forgetting the tennis court which was a great addition. At around 8pm we stood and watched the bats in the courtyard which was absolutely fascinating. This is a peaceful, private and tranquil place to stay. There is WiFi throughout with exception of the second bedroom where the signal doesn’t reach, there are about 6 small steep stairs to get into the apartment which anyone with mobile issues may have issue with. Beautiful setting and wonderful gardens. Excellent communication with owners prior to our stay and a lovely welcome pack of home-made goodies to enjoy on our arrival. Fresh flowers were a really super extra addition and made the accommodation seem personalised. Unfortunately, if you had wished to play tennis you would not be able to do so as the 'tennis court' was not there - it was a lawned, flat, but unmarked area and most certainly not 'play-ready' The Wi-fi is very intermittent and whilst we didn't wish to spend the holiday browsing the internet it is, unfortunately, vital today for making bookings (restaurants and cycling day bookings were lengthy procedures) We do, of course, appreciate the age of the property but we found the plumbing noises from other areas of the house very loud at 6 am during our stay. All in all we enjoyed our stay here and it was a very good location for exploring the Forest of Dean area of Gloucestershire.

Delighted you found the property comfortable and that you enjoyed the garden. Thank you for the feedback on the pre-visit communication. We set up the tennis court or croquet lawn depending on what our guests wish to play. As you declined my offer twice about setting up the court, I assumed you had not wanted to play. The court can be made play ready in under the hour with full white lines. I am sorry you had a problem with the internet. Our gigaclear connection is very strong normally. But glad you enjoyed the stay nonetheless. Property Owner

) and because of this you have to embrace its charm and be prepared to accept a few idiosyncrasies that come with a property of this age. In the main these are restricted height to a few of the interior doors (those over 5ft may need to duck or grouse!) and the short but steep flight of stairs that you need to negotiate to gain access the property (which could be a problem for people not too steady on their legs!). However once inside the property all rooms are on one level and you find a very clean comfortable well appointed spacious apartment. Pauline and James made us feel very welcome and provided us with fresh scones with homemade jam and cream (delicious!) and a bottle of locally produced fruity red wine from the nearby Newent vinery. • "We sought a peaceful and quiet holiday."

This accommodation easily met that. It was secluded with wonderful wildlife very close by including bats, owls, squirrels, pheasants and much more. It was warm, cosy and of course a very historic building. Pauline met us on arrival and had stocked the fridge with local eggs, milk and scones with jam and cream. After a tiring journey, that was very welcome and a nice touch. The owners were always available but ever discreet so we felt totally independent and in touch should we have any questions or issues. Furnishings were traditional and fascinating including interesting paintings and furniture - including a huge comfortable bed. Perfect after a long day. The local town was very near and the surrounding scenery was like going back to England as it used to be - lush fields replete with livestock and lots of birdlife overhead. If you crave seclusion from a bustling world, with nature and fresh air on your doorstep this is the place to stay. I have no hesitation in giving it full marks - a rare event for me as I have always been a tough marker! Well done Pauline, Dean Hall and Hideaways. We got great value for our money and will definitely return.

It is very warm and comfortable and the hosts Pauline and James make you feel genuinely welcome to share their home with absolutely nothing being too much trouble - we mentioned that there was no potato masher and hey presto, a new one appeared the following day, so now Dean Hall has everything that you need for a self catering holiday!! It was nice to be invited to enjoy the grounds and if it had been summer, we would have taken a lot more advantage of this. We enjoyed learning about the history of the property and it was interesting to also read about it and see photos in the local heritage centre. An ideal base to explore the Forest of Dean and exceptionally good value for money. Definitely the best self catering property we have had the pleasure to stay at. So thank you Pauline and James.

  • "A wonderful base for exploring The Forest of Dean and charming villages and towns."

But this estate ranks above everything for its gardens history and comfort. The gardens and wildlife including cats, Billy and Sam, are enough to prevent you from straying from the front gate. Further afield, Sunday roast lunch at the Saracens Head pub, Symonds Yat East is a must do. A morning in beautiful Ledbury and lunch at the Talbot Inn is another must. Many thanks to our hosts and we can only admire you for your passion and for your gardens and historic manor.

  • "This is a charming apartment in a Wing of historic Dean Hall."

It sounds grand and it is grand! The grounds are tastefully planted with interesting flowers and shrubs, making them a haven for wildlife. The house is very historic and we were interested to read the material about its history in the folder. James and Pauline will be happy to enlarge on this if you ask. There are lots of interesting places to visit, either walking or by car. A must is Gloucester Cathedral and Bourton on the Water - the most celebrated Cotswold village - it is busy but worth a visit. We will return!

  • "The accommodation is charming, comfortable, well equipped and practical - once you get used to the low doorways!"

The eclectic art collection is interesting and the wildlike (especially the bats) is delightful. The lovely 'work in progess' garden has provided lots of ideas to take home. Littledean, on the edge of the forest, must have some of the most spectacular views in the country. We have had a wonderful relaxing stay. Thank you...

  • "It has been a lovely week at Dean Hall, with the spring sunshine streaming through the bedroom windows."

The house has fascinated me since the days of childhood - walks down to Newnham which always involved passing the gates and peering in. The accommodation created here is excellent - cosy, clean and warm. The garden is a delight, with the mix of garden and wild flowers and colourful displays of bluebells. The floral displays in the apartment were much appreciated, as were the home-made scones and jam and the freshly laid eggs. Thank you both, James and Pauline, for a lovely break in The Forest.

  • "As we wanted to revisit the Forest of Dean after spending many years caravaning there, we wanted to stay somewhere quiet and peaceful."

This fits the bill perfectly. The apartment is spacious and well stocked with everything we wanted. It is within walking distance of the village with its convenience store and two pubs. The gardens are lovely and guests are welcome to wander ,and even have a barbq! One thing to look out for is the daily emergence of bats from the barn outside the front door. A delight every evening at dusk. One drawback is the short steep stairs from the front door to the rest of the apartment, everything else is on one floor. The owners live in another part of the large mansion sized house and made us very welcome.

It is on the first floor of the South East wing and accessed up some steep stairs, with banisters on both sides.

Dean Hall Apartment provides very spacious and well presented luxury accommodation and has deservedly been awarded 4 stars Gold by Visit England. This wonderful property is steeped in history and was the site of Civil War skirmishes in the 1660s.

Within a few minutes’ walk from the Hall, you reach the breathtaking Forest of Dean which has enough paths for a lifetime of discovery.

The Hall itself is approached through beautiful cast iron gates, down a long drive that is flanked by millions of mauve crocuses in early spring and massive sweet chestnut trees along the drive that are over 350 years old.

South facing, light and extremely spacious, covering approx 1200 sq ft, the interior of the apartment has been refurbished to an exceptionally high standard.

The sitting room is bathed in sunlight in the summer.

In the autumn, winter and early spring months, it is very warm and cosy and has a log burner, with a starter pack of logs, kindling and firelighters provided.

Dean Hall provides a comfortable and relaxing base for a holiday in this unspoilt part of Gloucestershire.

With two separate bathrooms, this is an ideal property for two couples.

You will not be disappointed. Guests have the shared use of the beautiful and extensive grounds surrounding the house.

There are numerous places to sit and enjoy the grounds and relax with a drink or over a meal.

For the more energetic, there is a lawn tennis court that can also be used for a game of croquet.

The owners provide racquets and mallets, but keen tennis players may wish to bring their own racquets.

Guests are invited to help themselves to the fruit and vegetables that are in season from the orchard, soft fruit area and large vegetable patch.

The Welcome Pack that awaits guests includes homemade marmalade, jams, and scones or cake.

Basic essentials such as tea, coffee, sugar, butter, milk and cooking oil are provided as a starter pack.
