  • "I had a wonderful solo pre-Christmas weekend away at Shepherd's View and thoroughly enjoyed every minute."

I arrived late at night, but easily found the parking spot and Hut through the gate. With such a clear night, it was fantastic being able to sit outside with something warm and just take in the stars above (thought it would be great to have a way to turn off the automatic light). The Hut is beautifully kitted out inside and incredibly comfortable to sleep in — heating is provided by a radiator and fire, but the bedding was warm too. Stepping out from the Hut there are some beautiful walks with incredible views, and driving to Stroud is really easy if you want to pop for some shopping. If you're a solo traveller and looking for somewhere to unwind, I really recommend Shepherd's View.

Thank you very much for your lovely feedback on Shepard's View. We are delighted that you had an enjoyable stay in the Cotswolds as a solo traveller. We hope you choose to visit again with us soon. Property Owner

Lots of places to walk to close by and Stroud for evening meals made the mini break lovely. Will be going back

  • "I just found the whole experience very pleasing - very clean hut, fantastic views across the valley in Laurie Lee's countryside and a beautiful place to wake up to."

  • "This Shepherds Hut is in an idyllic spot, very secluded (apart from the sheep) and well equipped for such a small space."

Lovely views and a pub nearby. If going in summer take a fan as it does get hot!

The property

Possibly the ultimate in terms of romantic, 'get away from it all' locations and we love it! Situated in the utterly gorgeous Slad Valley (famously known as Laurie Lee country) the owners have created a perfect hideaway on the edge of this quaint village.

Small, but perfectly formed, the accommodation contains a standard double bed, shower room and all the mod cons needed for a break.

They have even managed to incorporate a log-burner for those long, winter evenings. The kitchen area has your essential amenities, and the fold away table allows you the chance to make the most of the amazing views. Every effort has been made to combine creature comforts with this idyllic, rural setting. If you can drag yourself away from this incredible location - you have the quintessential Cotswold town of Painswick a few miles away, truly beautiful and definitely worth a visit.

Popular spots such as Burford, Stow on the Wold and Bourton on the Water are all nearby.

If you are looking to explore some of the larger Cotswold towns, then Stroud is just down the road.

A little further afield is the gorgeous town of Cheltenham, famous for its Regency buildings, and for its internationally renowned horse racing meetings - most notably the Gold Cup meeting every March, something that the owners take a particular interest in.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.

About the location

PAINSWICK

Stroud 4 miles; Gloucester 7 miles; Cheltenham 10 miles.

Painswick, located only 10 miles from Cheltenham, is a town and civil parish in Gloucestershire. The town originated from the wool trade, but is now best known for its parish church’s yew trees and the local Rococo Garden. The village is mainly constructed of locally quarried Cotswold Stone. It stands on a hill in the Stroud district which overlooks one of the Five Valleys and is halfway along the Cotswolds Way National Trail. It is home to a cricket and rugby team and has a popular golf course on the outskirts of the town. There is a local pub The Royal Oak which offer real ales, real fires and a courtyard. Opposite the pub is a well-stocked village shop. A twenty minute walk from the village is the Painswick Beacon which affords vast views across Gloucester to the River Severn and the Malvern Hills. The Painswick Centre hosts many events and exhibitions and is home to the ACP Gallery. Painswick is 4 miles north of Stroud and 2 miles northwest of Slad – home of Laurie Lee, author of “Cider with Rosie”.
