  • "06/02/2024 Re: Spring Cottage, Winson Near Bibury, Gloucestershire."

Date of stay: 02/02/2024 for 3 nights Unfortunately, whilst this cottage is without doubt a lovely cottage, very cosy and in such beautiful surroundings, there were a number of issues we had with it. I have listed below:- • Bin in sink cupboard was full of someone else’s rubbish, including a broken glass. We did not touch it and it was still there when we left • Dent in kitchen cupboard • This cupboard was also very dirty as obviously rubbish had over spilled onto the door and shelves • Only 5 tablemats ! • Dead flies in bedroom light – this has been mentioned in other comments • Broken light shade in bedroom which fell off every time we used it • Dead woodlice and black bits all over the carpet in the lounge behind the television and surrounding area. We fully understand that the area contributes to insects etc but we live in similar surroundings in Wales and these had been there for quite a while • We were a group of 6 women in mid 60s and early 70s and as another guest has pointed out there is no enough seating for 6. When I booked it we assumed one sofa was a 3 seater, it is not, so for our entire stay someone had to sit on the floor • This sofa had a large rip in the back and the frill was hanging off • Same sofa has absolutely no padding in the seats so very uncomfortable and had a few stains on it. The sofa being uncomfortable has been mentioned in review before so why has it not been rectified • DVD did not work, the batteries in the remote control have leaked and are covered in battery fluid, this obviously did not work so we tried to turn on using the player’s controls but it still would not work. This was extremely annoying as when we go away together we really enjoy ‘movie nights’ and we all buy a DVD to play over the 3 nights. Due to the broken DVD player we could not do this. Everything should be in working over and checked before the next guests arrive to ensure this. • The downstairs shower – the grouting in the bottom tiles were dirty, the radiator was very dusty and behind the toilet was dirty • A lot of dirt and dust was found beneath the pipes and on top of the skirting – am not sure why all these pipes have not been boxed in as it is right through the house • One of the spotlights in the lounge was hanging down from its socket • A lot of the curtains where not hung properly or had come off the rail • There was a lot of dirty marks up the walls and on the skirting boards • There were no instructions in the book left for recycling, we had to put everything in black bags and in to the dustbins outside. Firstly we thought that maybe that area do not recycle but when we spoke to the person living in house opposite he said that they did recycle around there. For us this was appalling as we feel very strongly about recycling This is a lovely cottage but sadly needs a deep clean, new furniture, new carpets and basic renovations and maintenance. I am sending in photos to back up all the issues we experienced. We go away as a group every year in the winter and have never experienced these issues especially when paying nearly £200 a night and therefore feel we should be compensated as comfort and working equipment is essential when paying to stay somewhere which is advertised as such. Many thanks

  • "The beautifull house was spacious enough for our family and we enjoyed the nice surroundings and well maintained garden!"

All kitchen supplies we needed were available. Cleanliness could be a bit better: lots of dust behind and under furniture (and even 1 lost child shoe). Unfortunately the central heating stopped working during our stay, but luckily the mobile electric heatings kept us warm. Some attention could be done for the bathroom: the showerhead produced brownish rusty water each time in the beginning when the water was running. And the temperature control of the shower is nearly working anymore.

The house is absolutely lovely, the garden and the surroundings are superb. The kitchen is very well equipped. Comfortable beds and beautiful bathroom with a great water pressure! The bedrooms and dining area are a bit tight and there was a little extra dust in hidden spots, but overall Spring Cottage exceeded our expectations!

Thank you for your lovely feedback! We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your time away and we appreciate your feedback regarding the cleanliness. It's very well appointed and blessed with a river at the bottom of (one of the) gardens. Had everything we needed for a very pleasant early summer stay. It is a very beautiful setting - a peaceful and perfect place to unwind. Region not blessed with outstanding attractions (imo) although Chidcote superb and much recommended. Surprisingly decent lunch at the Catherine Wheel in Arlington (Bibury). Easy to find not so easy to leave! Thoroughly recommended.

It is very quaint and well appointed, however the beds were uncomfortable, none of us slept well. The back bedroom ceiling light was full of dead flies with one still alive and crawling around, really unpleasant. There is no mirror in the master bedroom, it would be helpful to have a full length in there. The grounds are lovely but in general the cottage needs redecorating, it could be something very special.

Many thanks for taking the time to share your feedback, which we will discuss with the owner and housekeepers. We're pleased to hear your enjoyed the peaceful location and surrounding area of the cottage. Best wishes, Manor Cottages. Property Owner

  • "I was very concerned about the cleanliness before I arrived due to past reviews."

Im pleased to say I needn't have worried. The beds were very comfortable and the cottage was cosy. The setee was a bit hard and uncomfortable and really could do with updating. The downstairs bathroom radiator wasn't working so we didnt use the downstairs shower as the room was too cold ( I have since contacted manor cottages and they are going to fix this). There are plenty of walks to do from the cottage and the real fire was lovely to come back to. I totally agree with a previous review that it is not for anyone with mobility problems due to the path to the cottage being pretty steep. But all in all we were pretty happy with our choice of cottage and really enjoyed our stay.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. We're glad that you found the cottage to be clean and cosy. Thank you also for bringing some issues to our attention and we hope these didn't impact your stay too much, and that we can welcome you again. Manor Cottages Property Owner

  • "We really loved our stay here."

The property has a large garden with a stream running through which more could have been made of in the property description. The apple tree, completely laden with fruit (we stayed at the end of October) was an unexpected bonus! The bedrooms and lounge were comfortable, and although the kitchen was a little tight, it was manageable. We have a few suggestions for things which would have made our stay even better: a washing-up bowl, extra teaspoons, an extra set of bowls, bins in the bedrooms, recycling information (we ended up taking a lot of our recycling home with us), a dinner service suitable for the microwave (metal-rimmed crockery is not microwave compatible). We did struggle with the heating, which seemed to go off at 7:30pm every evening (and at 6:30pm with the hour change!). However, the upstairs bathroom was often over-heated. We would definitely be happy to stay here again, despite these minor issues.

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay and made the most of the stream and the seasonal apples. Thank you for your suggestions, these have been passed onto our housekeeping team. We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

Thank you for your feedback with regards to your stay at Spring Cottage. I'm sorry to hear you found the cottage unsuitable without an outside handrail. If you had called before booking, we would of happily have advised you of alternative accommodation, to have better suited your needs. The path to the cottage doesn't have a handrail, but it's in the countryside which has a stream beside the house. If it had lots of steps going to he front door, then of course this would be a different matter. Did you call the Housekeeper to help you get the heating on?. We will arrange for Maintenance to have a look at the cooker, so thank you for letting us know. With regards to finding the cottage, unfortunately Satnav doesn't always get you outside the door, which is why we provide additional directions. If you are lost, please get in touch with us and we can direct you in. We hope you still managed to enjoy your stay. Kind regards Manor Cottages. Property Owner

After we booked we mearly wanted a nice quiet location in an nice setting following months of stress. Whilst the cottage and location was very good we could no longer tolerate the noise from three building sites nearby, constant swearing and angle grinding and banging. In addition chain sawing. We wish we had fair warning from the owners/cleaners in this regard. We thought it would let up at 16:00 but continued from 08:00 to 19:30 every days. The property next door on the stream decided to employ a company or bodgers! who demolished a shed on a Sunday who did not have a clue by constantly banging all day instead of using a crowbar/saw and swore like the others! It was disappointing, we wanted to enjoy the outside surroundings which were ideal with the stream and wildlife. We did attempt to do so to no avail as we could not even hear each other. We were forced to go out on the days in situe but this was never our intention and came home for some peace! Please escalate and seek advises? We would certainly not wish on any future visitors as it would be equally unfair. Thank you Ray Johnson

Thank you for providing us with your feedback. We can only apologise for the disruption you experienced during your stay. This was an unforeseeable situation and if we had known before, you would have been contacted prior to your stay. We have since learned that the shed demolition has now been completed, and the other work surrounding the property has quietened down. We can once again only apologise for this disruption and would like to welcome you back to the property again in the future, where you can relax as intended. Property Owner

  • "The organisation and marketing by Sykes was brilliant."

The cottage itself was ok but needed extra effort to be great. Cleanliness was very disappointing with furnishing and fixtures covered in dust and pet hairs and a graveyard of dead bugs behind the tv. Little things like the mantelpiece clock not working, door bell not working, lamp bulbs not working all add up to an average experience. The owners are clearly making a lot of money from this rental being booked out every day this month so better investment in their customer experience is expected (especially when these things have been mentioned on previously published feedbacks). Otherwise enjoyed the stay - location and outdoor areas were fab and would go back if reassured that this feedback was actioned.

  • "Beautiful cottage in idyllic location."

However access to the cottage itself is difficult, particularly with luggage and food bags, as you can’t park near enough and the lane itself is very steep. You can’t tell this from the photos. It didn’t spoil our holiday at all, but I imagine in bad weather and limited mobility it would be extremely hard. The gardens backing onto the river are so peaceful and very private. Just being able to sit and watch swans and ducks float by was lovely. Photos don’t do it justice. ( they need to be updated on the website) Bedrooms are quaint, and a little on the tight side for moving around, but very comfortable. The one double bedroom, we couldn’t access the fitted wardrobe properly as the door wouldn’t open past the edge of the bed. We did feel that carpets and furniture covers were a touch shabby and needed replacing or deep cleaning, and there were a few little niggles that needed seeing to, but all in all it certainly wouldn’t stop us going back there. Be very careful with the hot water taps, especially with children as the water was scalding.

Many thanks for your feedback on Spring Cottage. we agree it is situated in an idyllic location. Since your stay all the carpets have been professionally cleaned. We will look at other issues raised. Manor Cottages Property Owner

Very idyllic location. The cottage interiors however felt a lot like a second, not-so-loved home. The furniture, carpets etc felt a bit grubby. Beds very uncomfortable. The type you put on your holiday cottage - too good to throw away but you wouldn’t have them in your main home. The kitchen and its cupboards (with plenty of content) didn’t feel very clean. The coffee plunger is broken - perhaps small but an important detail. It was great for a summer stay when you spend a lot of time outdoors (on the lovely river deck). I would not stay here in the winter confined to the indoors. Having said that the cottage offered good value for money this time of the year in this part of the Cotswolds. I would stay again in the summer.

The cottage is very cozy and comfortable. We had a Winter break so It was lovely to get in from the cold into a lovely warm cottage as the central heating was very good. The garden and river at the end of the garden were wonderful, I spent hours every day just sitting and watching the wildlife go about their daily business... so many different birds it’s a Twitchers heaven! Our dog loved the big garden. Two minor issues were that there seemed to be several lightbulbs not working, some lights in the living room, one of the bedrooms, but particularly the porch and entrance lights. We’d brought a torch which was essential when dog walking in the evening as the village is unlit, although maybe having a torch in the cottage would be helpful? Secondly, the village recycling system had changed recently requiring different colour bins for different recycled material. Unfortunately, our cottage didn’t appear to have the appropriate bins. Overall we really enjoyed our stay in this gorgeous, cozy, tranquil cottage in a beautiful spot and would definitely recommend it.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback for Spring Cottage. Manor Cottages takes feedback very seriously and will take action to rectify the light bulbs and investigate the recycling bins. • "We greatly enjoyed our stay at Spring Cottage, located in a very quiet corner of this incredibly beautiful Cotswold village, with an unhindered view across the garden to the countryside beyond."

The beautiful living room is the nicest feature of the house and the central heating quickly warms it when lit. We had glorious weather over the whole Easter weekend and were able to enjoy the sunny outdoor terrace in between spending most days visiting family in a nearby village. The cottage is small, though, especially for 6 adults. The bedrooms are smaller than one is led to believe in the property description; only the second twin room is advertised as being small, whereas the double bedroom barely affords space to move around and no space to unpack a case on the floor without blocking the door. The dining area in a corner is cramped, too small for 6 people round the table without everyone having to get up to allow others to leave. Fortunately, this was not too much of an issue for us since we ate all meals outside except breakfast. There didn't appear to any way to heat the kitchen which was chilly first thing in the morning. On the other hand, there was ample stock of quality crockery and cutlery. There was an unpleasant smell in the hall the whole time (drains?), but a previous tenant has already remarked on this, so hopefully that will be resolved soon.

Although Spring Cottage is a 3 bedroom property, it is priced lower than the average 3 bedroom cottage due to the smaller living / dining area which is more aimed at 4 people comfortably. Also it is described on the website that the second twin room is more suitable for children due to the smaller room size. The issue with the smell was not raised during the stay, but was investigated as soon as it was brought to our attention which was when the feeeback was received. All pipes, toilets, bathrooms were checked despite no smell detected and no issue was found. Property Owner

As with all our Cottages there is a welcome folder with useful information about the cottage including a phone number for our guests to use for any issues. This is manned 24/7. Unfortunately, no concerns were raised during the stay, however, our maintenance responded to the issue of smell as soon as we were made aware having had the feedback. Our maintenance responded to the issue of the shower urgently and found that parts were required in order to function properly. These could not be obtained in time but was repaired shortly after the guests departed. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely break at Spring Cottage."

Spring Cottage was in an idyllic location and had it been summertime it would have been an even more appreciated stay as the gardens were lovely and spacious. Although the accommodation is listed as 3 bedrooms and could accommodate 6 people, the bedrooms were small and the double bed was not big enough for a long stay. Also, the lounge/dining room which was the only reception room would have been too small for more than 4 people. However, regardless of the above, it was a beautiful cottage, impeccably clean and a real delight to enjoy. The downside is walking down all your luggage from the road to the property but I guess that is part of the charm of the setting in itself. A very quite location and very relaxing. We had a small dog with us, Hector, who enjoyed himself enormously and there were a number of quality hotels/pubs in the nearby villages that accommodated us taking Hector with us to dinner each evening where Hector was made very welcome on all occasions. Our favourite hotel/pub was called The Village Pub in Barnsley - absolutely fabulous cuisine and ambience. We would strongly recommend Spring Cottage taking into our comments above.

The property

Spring Cottage is very much, and every inch, the quintessential English and Cotswolds cottage.

An 18th Century cottage set in an adorable little village just Outside Bibury (near Burford), it offers guests a wonderful option to sample the Cotswolds at its most charming best.

Overlooking a beautiful garden and with a river gently meandering past its foot, you have the true picture-postcard location in just about every sense.

Inside each room throughout the cottage has a warm, welcoming feel, with delightful views across the open countryside or village.

We particularly adore the garden-to-river view from the cottage along with the seats perched on the rivers' edge from which to enjoy the world drift past, it is about as serene a location as you could possibly imagine.

The village of Winson is so typically Cotswolds that it is hard to imagine that anything has changed in the last 200 years, except for the odd car tootling through the local lanes...This is a family and friends' location, a chance to enjoy the fresh air, walking into Bibury (and the pubs of course) or to simply take in some breathtaking views on the many paths peppered across the landscape.

Heavenly!

BIBURY

Burford 9 miles; Bourton-on-the-Water 10 miles.

William Morris called Bibury ‘the most beautiful village in England” and today it is world famous as a village which best epitomises the English rural scene. At its centre is an outstanding Saxon church. So important is the village architecturally that the National Trust is closely involved in its preservation - Arlington Row, a row of weavers cottages was restored by the Trust in the 1970s and its distinctive roofline and gables are one of the most photographed scenes in the Cotswolds. The village has a selection of shops, pubs and tea rooms and a wider range of amenities are available in the nearby market town of Burford “Gateway to the Cotswolds”.
