We were welcomed by yummy homemade brownies and jam, and a lovely tea-set all ready for an afternoon treat. Later, Tom dropped in for a nice chat, recommendations on walks around the region, and a bottle of wine. The Old Dairy itself is very comfortable, with lovely little decorative details (from the vintage tins in the kitchen or the Agatha-Christiesque desk in the living room), and all the modern amenities you might need (an excellent shower included). We, especially, loved the fireplace and being able to stay in with a cosy fire on the evenings. We also especially liked Shilton. All the other villages we visited were very picturesque, but Shilton has the feel a real lived-in village, quiet and reserved. It was very much reminiscent of the villages we grew up in our countries, which made us feel happy and at home. The "Shilton Rose and Crown" down the road added to its charm. On the day of our departure, we left with big smiles and an excellent bottle of apple and pear juice that Nicola had just pressed in her kitchen! We highly recommend the Old Dairy, and will definitely be going back in the future for another great mini-break! We had a welcome tray, flowers from the garden, home made brownies, eggs and a wedding present which was a lovely gesture. If you are looking for a tranquil, relaxing accommodation amongst lovely surroundings then The Old Diary is perfect. The property Located in the quaint village of Shilton, The Old Dairy is a quintessential Cotswolds property, set back from the lane that runs through the heart of the village, very smart and very stylish. Step inside to find a joyful show of colour and homeliness, large light rooms and a well equipped retreat ideal for a relaxing break. Dating back to the 1680's, the building was originally the creamery and the place where butter was churned. Today it retains a classical charm with high ceilings and large windows that make the space really welcoming. The owners, who have completely renovated the building, have created a beautiful retreat. Outside is a typical English cottage garden, with a delightful village beyond this. Stroll to the pub (the owners can lend you wellies and coats if necessary!), jump in the car and be in Burford in about 3 mins or simply do nothing - this choice is your in this cracking holiday home. View on map About the location BURFORD Swinbrook 2.4 miles; Little Barrington 3.5 miles; Minster Lovell 5.6 miles. Burford is possibly one of, if not THE most famous of the Cotswolds' locations. With its medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages, Burford is justifiably one of the most picturesque towns in England. Often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Cotswolds', the town was originally a fortified Anglo-Saxon ford which later grew to be an important regional crossroads and wealthy wool town. Located mid way between Oxford and Cheltenham (25 mins each away) it is a little haven of history and beauty that many come to fall in love with when they visit. The 16th century Tolsey building, once the meeting place for medieval merchants, now houses The Tolsey Museum, a delightful local museum illustrating the town's social and industrial past. The church is stunning, a real gem architecturally with many interesting memorials charting some of Burford's great families. There is also the signature, on the baptisimal font, of Antony Sedley, one of the Levellers besieged in the church in 1649 - three of the ringleaders were executed by Oliver Cromwell's men in the churchyard. History awaits! With little changing over the centuries, Burford is now very popular with visitors, both for its beauty and history but also for its shopping and antiques, and for the wide variety of places to eat, with restaurants, pubs and teashops. It is an ideal base for visiting The Cotswolds area as it is within easy driving distance of popular attractions such as Blenheim Palace, Sudley Castle, Warwick Castle and several National Trust Houses and Gardens. Bourton on the Water, Bibury, Cirencester and Stow on the Wold are all with 25 minutes from the property.
