  • "Great place."

Really appreciated the welcome parcel and the cleanliness of the property. Great facilities which really allowed us to prepare a meal on the first night. More to be made of the nearest pubs as they were outstanding and maybe a few guides on what else can be seen locally would be a good addition. Liked the short history of the cottage to understand a bit more about the local area. On a separate note, there might be a Wasp Nest in the drain above the kitchen window that needs checking out.

Thank you for your feedback with regards to your stay at Grange Cottage. It's lovely to hear how much you enjoyed your stay at the property and we would love to welcome you back again in the future. Thank you for your comments about the possibly of a wasp nest, we will advise the Owner so they can look into this. Kind regards Manor Cottages. Property Owner

  • "We are just back from one week at Grange Cottage (july 2023)."

We enjoyed the view and the cleanliness of the cottage. It is, however, a small cottage and we couldn’t figure out how we would have done if we had been more than 3 (to eat in the kitchen, for the bathroom). We didn’t expect the lane to be that steep but we made it. Make sure you have a good car (lane between 25-30% steep)! We would however not come along with babies, young children or elderly persons. Some nice details on the photos were not there upon arrival (cushions on a bed, flowers in some of the rooms, etc). The beds had been made very quickly and would have been uncomfortable to sleep in and we hade to make them again… Besides, 2 quilts are clearly too short for the bed sizes (in the blue room and in the secon-floor room). We had read that the beds were very comfortable. We don’t share that point of view as we all had it tough with hard mattresses and too big hard pillows (except for one in the second-floor room). The owner, Georgina, proved to be helpful and very friendly when we called her for some points that we had trouble with (heating and burners). So, basically, it is a nice little place with quiet neighbours and beautiful view and surroundings but it lacks the level of comfort we can expect.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback. We are surprised to have received these comments given the positive reviews we have previously received. Grange Cottage has hosted families and mixed groups of six people for nearly eight years now and we're confident that the majority of our guests have a lovely, high-quality stay. We spoke twice about the operating instructions during your stay and the instructions were also in the property. No comfort issues were flagged at this time either. We won't respond to every detail raised, just sorry to hear Grange Cottage wasn't for you. Property Owner

  • "Overall a nice place to stay beautiful views the hill to it was very steep though."

For the number of people you can accommodate I don’t think it’s right to expect people to sit up a table and use those small stools. Some of the bedrooms lacked mirrors or a chair which would have been useful.

So pleased that you appreciated the beautiful location of Grange Cottage. The amazing views towards rolling hills, vineyards and sunsets do mean you have to drive a steep Cotswold hill in first gear to access it. But it really is worth it. We've taken onboard your feedback about the 2 end seating stools in the kitchen - whilst the aim was to create more space in the area and provide stool seating for children part of family groups, we appreciate that all adult groups may find this slightly uncomfortable. We'll be adding 2 extra chairs to the 4 already in place next week. As for a mirror in every bedroom - there is only one bedroom out of four that doesn't have one, and this is set in the attic where there isn't a flat wall to position it on. The bathroom and landing have mirrors for people to use so we hope this is a reasonable compromise. Property Owner

  • "The property is based on a steep road, which is also mentioned in the booking."

My sons were able to park 2 middle sized and one big merc in the parking provided with no problem. Just getting in was a hassle, as the cras kept skidding coz of the gravel stones. The entrance from the conservatory is ideal for elderly people as there are no steep steps, like from the back entrance. All the beds are very comfy and linen was clean. One drawback, was the bathroom upstairs. There was only one, so we had to set our timings with the other members of the family. Also getting in the bathtub is difficult if you had problems with agility. There's a shower in the bathtub only. The downstairs toilet was an advantage though. Heating adjustment facilities were awesome, as you could boost the heating and water whenever the set timings ran out. It was very efficient and quick !! This was an added bonus to our stay here, as my parents feel cold all the time. The staircase was narrow with a spiral turn. Fortunately, there was a holding rope , which made it easier for my parents to hold onto. The conservatory serves as a beautiful viewpoint across the valley and mountains, and it was lovely to watch whilst having a cup of tea in the morning. overall, the cottage was extremely well kept and clean. the kitchen had all the necessary crockery, loads of it. Though we didn't cook we had our breakfast and tea. The space is huge and the gas cookers are a bonus. I enjoyed the best space in the garden, reading my book . The view is incredible in the well maintained garden. The cottage is very cozy and spacious. The extra games room helped my youngest son for his studying.

  • "Great cottage all as advertised."

The quality of the linens and white fluffy towels was exceptional. 2 minor points that would have made our stay better would have been a handrail for the 3 stairs leading to the kitchen/dining area. This cottage sleeps 6 but the dining table only had 4 chairs and 2 low milking stools. Not really appropriate for this quality/price and for adults to sit on for meals.

Thanks for your feedback and great to hear you had a good time. We pride ourselves on keeping the towels and linen to a high standard and have taken onboard your comments about the 2 stools in the kitchen and will replace with chairs shortly. Whilst fine for young families and for creating more space in the kitchen area, we appreciate they may not be great for long grown up lunches. Hope you come back soon to try out the new configuration! Property Owner

  • "Loved this place!"

! Absolutely everything we dreamed of....perfect for a long weekend away with my mum and sis. A short stroll through the wood to the local village and pub. Snuggly warm and comfortable as anything inside the house. All we needed, plus more in the kitchen. Magic views from the conservatory, an ideal spot for my morning cuppa watching the birds feast and spotting local wildlife peeping through the hedge! One thing I will mention is the gradient of the laneway coming up to the house, it's perfectly driveable if you dare, (and walkable if you're fit and mobile) but not for the faint hearted...

We agree the views are amazing - it's a truly special place! But of course to get a vista of Cotswold vineyards, valleys and stunning sunsets, you do need to climb the hill. Take it slow, in first gear, and there is level gated driveway parking at the top. As it's a no-through lane the peace and quiet adds to the rural charm - perfect if you're looking for a countryside getaway. We're delighted to hear you had a fab stay at Grange Cottage. • "We had a wonderful time at Grange Cottage!"

Perfect for our family of five. Beautiful home in a spectacular area. Be aware that the ceilings/doorways are low in several places in the house. It still feels very open and light, but for someone over six feet, there were a lot of bumped heads.

Thank you for the feedback. We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay and would love to welcome you back again. Best wishes, Character Cottages Property Owner

Beautifully furnished, comfortable beds, wonderful views, I was lucky to be there for the hot March weather, so unexpectedly got to enjoy the garden as well. It is a short 5 minute uphill walk through the woods to the common, so easy to leave the car at the cottage and walk your socks off.

  • "First of all it’s important to say how spotlessly clean the house was."

Given the current situation regarding COVID-19, it’s easy to be apprehensive about staying away from home. I can say that this property has gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure everything is perfect for your stay. The information pack in the property made living in the cottage a doddle, we didn’t need to contact the property manager at all. The property itself has been restored to a very high spec and every room was well designed and decorated. The location is ideal as it is up a private track so there is no through traffic, but you can easily reach anywhere in the western Cotswolds and beyond. I wouldn’t think twice about booking to stay here again. The only things you need to keep in mind are:- • the stairs and steep, anyone with significant mobility issues wouldn’t find it a suitable property • we had a toddler with us, a stair gate is fitted at the top of the stairs but care should be taken at the bottom of the stairs (in the living room) to stop toddlers scrambling upstairs • I’m 6’3 and after 3 nights my lower back did start to ache a bit - many ceilings are very low! It’s part of the character of the property though and didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the cottage. Would highly recommend for families, romantic breaks, couples with one young child. The kitchen was large and well equipped for home cooking. 10/10!

Comfortable beds, spotlessly clean and well equipped. At the end of a steep driveway, it's a very peaceful spot yet there are two pubs are just a few minutes walk away up through the wood. Lots of lovely walks in the area . We'd love to go back.

We had a lovely cosy weekend with fires (make sure you pick up enough kindling from the local supermarket) and walks through the woods (wellies necessary!) to the pub, finished off with brunch in the well set up kitchen. Be prepared to climb a very steep hill if your car can’t make it up.

It is a classic Cotswolds cottage with great views over the valley opposite. The location, while up a very steep hill, was excellent - - a short walk through the wood to the fantastic Amberley Inn - - and no issue with access with our car. The log burner was a welcome addition on the cold evenings we spent there.

It was a beautiful warm, cosy and very clean property with views to die for! I cannot thank you enough for sending back our Chromecast so quickly after we left it behind in the property, it arrived in the post today. That is what I call a first class service! Funny thing was that we didn’t even need it as Netflix was already provided. I would like to highly recommend Character Cottages for anyone looking for a quiet and peaceful getaway.

High quality bedding and comfortable beds. Secluded location with far reaching views. Plenty of comfortable seating inside and out with very attractive patio area and garden. Although at the top of a very steep and hard to find lane plenty of parking once there. Easy access to get my disabled mother into the property. Plenty of hot water, very attractive, well equipped kitchen. Amazing views from 3 of the 4 bedrooms. Would definitely plan a return visit. Owner very helpful, with quick response to checking in query and very accommodating. Lovely property.

  • "We had a lovely time with our extended family."

Thanks for the high chair cot and baby gate. The house was very clean and welcoming and the nearby town of Nailsworth had everything we needed. Supermarkets, takeaways and restaurants and was a very pleasant walk. The cottage is in easy reach of the usual Cotswold sights and attractions. We managed the extremely steep lane and equally steep stairs inside the house. We could not enjoy the garden and patio to the full as it was too cold and wet however the views in between showers were lovely.

The property

Perched at the top of a hill in Amberley with far reaching views sits this beautiful semi-detached, traditional Cotswold stone cottage, Grange Cottage.

Presented in a modern country style, this stunning holiday home has everything you need to enjoy a relaxing break with your loved ones.

As you walk through the lane gate you will be greeted to a spectacular view beyond the traditional cottage garden to Woodchester Valley and its vineyards.

You can park directly outside to unload luggage through the front door which opens into the welcoming conservatory that is well placed to appreciate the all year round sunsets.

Parking for three cars on level gravel gated driveway is situated behind the house with steps down to the cottage back door.

A step leads into the characterful sitting room, a room perfect for relaxing with your group, sink into the sofas, watching the TV or reading a local book from the selection on offer whilst overlooking the valley from the window seat, all the while the warmth from the woodburning stove keeps you toasty.

For some peace and quiet, venture into the reading room that sits adjacent to the sitting room which has a small writing bureau, two chairs and a selection of games.

Proceed up the steps in the sitting room into the well-equipped kitchen/diner to cook up a delicious evening meal with help from the double electric range oven with gas hob, and gather with your guests at the wooden dining table to indulge in your feast and plan your itinerary for your wonderful trip.

Completing the ground floor is a useful utility, offering space for storage of coats and shoes as well as containing a washer/dryer and freezer, and a cloakroom with a basin and WC.

Upstairs, you will find three welcoming bedrooms; the master is a lovely eaves room with high ceilings and exposed oak beams, containing a king-size bed, the second bedroom enjoys a sunny aspect, with views across to the Woodchester Valley Vineyard, and contains a queen size bed and the third contains a day bed set up as a single bed with a window seat, perfect for watching the sun set, with the family bathroom resting on the same floor, containing a bath with shower over.

A further steep staircase leads you into the fourth bedroom in the eaves of the cottage with exposed beams and panoramic views over the Woodchester Valley Vineyard and beyond with a double bed, fitted wardrobes and a free-standing flatscreen TV.

The main garden area is at the front of the cottage, enclosed by Cotswold stone walls, and is mostly laid to lawn, with traditionally planted cottage garden borders and a variety of mature shrubs and trees and a patio area outside the conservatory, with an outdoor table set which provides spectacular views across the valley to Woodchester and benefits from glorious sunsets.

The cottage rests on the edge of the village of Amberley, which although small, has two well regarded pubs, Amberley Black Horse and The Amberley Inn as well as backing onto the National Trust common land of Minchinhampton Common, a unique 600-acre open space with far reaching views, which offers walking, kite flying and an 18-hole golf course.

The larger towns of Nailsworth and Stroud are close by, offering a vibrant selection of restaurants, shops and award-winning farmers' markets, as well as the beautiful Sladebank Woods in Stroud and Woodchester Mansion and Park in Nailsworth.

Close to the property, the spectacular Woodchester Valley Vineyard scales the slopes of the Cotswolds, creating Sauvignon Blanc, which has been awarded a master medal at the Global Sauvignon Blanc Masters Awards in London 2022, and, with the other tasteful varieties, is definitely a must for wine lovers. Grange Cottage is an ideal base for outdoor activities such as walking and cycling, as well as for exploring the wider Cotswolds region and further afield places, such as Bath, where you can take a tour of the famous Roman Baths which are well-preserved, a temple constructed on the site between 60-70AD in the first few decades of Roman Britain – a very educational and interesting day out for all, where you can finish your day with a delicious meal at one of the many restaurants Bath has to offer.

Stay at Grange Cottage for a wonderful holiday.
