  • "We had an excellent stay & the property really suited us as we were a large party."

The weather helped as we were able to use the bbq - & get out & about! The host was very friendly & helpful & gave advice on walks to my nephew who was the 1st to arrive & so collected the key. Having the Old Court right next door was very handy too. The comfort rating is only because apparently some of the mattresses weren't very comfortable, eg the top bunk. But that is a small issue; it was a great place to stay with plenty of places to sit so that we could spread out. The local area (which we already knew) is full of interesting things to do & walks to take. Good for dogs! The whole family loved it & it was fun to re-visit places. We all had a brilliant time after not having seen one another for over 3 years. Thank you.

  • "This is a lovely building, in a nice location, let down by a lack of homeliness and attention to user experience."

With a few cheap adjustments, this would be 5 star instead of the slightly disappointing 3 that we felt it was. My feedback to the owners is: provide enough glass wear and patio furniture cushions for all the guests, a much bigger kitchen bin is needed plus bins are needed in all of the bathrooms, check the bulbs and tvs/remotes are all working in between guests, raise the temperature of the hot tub, fix the sauna (didn’t heat up at all), provide a few kitchen basics like cooking oil and bin bags, and a little welcome pack of some sort goes a really long way. My feedback to guests about to visit (and these are mostly questions I asked before arrival but couldn’t get an answer to beforehand): there is a cafetière, washing machine, tea-towels, fire wood, tumble drier and hair drier. But you’ll need to bring kitchen roll, much more toilet roll, hand wash, washing up sponge, washing powder, bin bags, all basic food condiments except for salt. There’s also no radio and don’t count on being able to use the TVs. You’ll also need a torch on the driveway, road outside if you’re walking at night. It’s also being aware that of the 2 bedrooms downstairs, the double opens directly on to the kitchen and is therefore rather noisy. We haven’t seen or heard anything from the owners whilst we were here (or beforehand) but someone did park on the end of the drive to do the school run (school opposite), so perhaps that was them? The positive points are that most of the beds are comfy, there’s plenty of fire wood, it’s clean and there’s a constant supply of hot shower water and a hot water ‘urn’ in the kitchen which is handy. We didn't really rate The Old Crown for food (not awful but not special and we were put on two tables in the bar despite booking several weeks in advance), but the deli and The Olde Ferrie Inn are both walking distance and really good, friendly and accommodating.

  • "The property was very nice but does need some TLC."

The heating was difficult to control, some rooms very hot, some very cold as the thermostats didn’t work. The hot tub wasn’t hot enough and the sauna didn’t work and didn’t heat up. The welcome pack should have included hand soap for the bathrooms and kitchen scourers to wash the pans properly. Also the remote control of the TV didn’t work so it was very difficult to switch channels and control the sound. So with a little extra care the property could be amazing.

  • "Very enjoyable and successful stay."

Minor niggles only, with numbers of lights around the property not working, particularly in the corridor to the downstairs shower room. As the corridor has two small sets of steps there is a risk of falling as the steps are poorly illuminated. Unfortunately, that would mean testing the lights every time the place is cleaned, but flicking the lights on during cleaning would add little to the time taken.

  • "I have three suggestions which I hope the owners will find helpful: 1 A new waste bin is needed, the existing one tears a full bin liner open when it is being removed."

    2. The hoover does a very poor job and needs replacing. 3. It would create a better impression (at very little cost) if basic consumables, such as toilet rolls, bin liners, kitchen rolls, salt and pepper, etc were provided at the start. Regards Eric March

  • "The Old Farmhouse is a great place for family occasions, plenty of space and parking, also great for letting the dogs roam free in the back, very cosy with the log fires."

Only criticism would be that the house needs a bit of TLC, painting and possibly new appliances, the toaster didn't work properly and the cooker is very temperamental, some knobs missing and hard to read the temp gauges. Overall had a nice stay.

  • "We had a lovely time, great set up for a large group holiday, a couple of things let it down."

The toaster was old and lost its knobs, cooker was so well used you couldn't see temperature or which knob turned which oven on. Very slow cooking times, it really lets the place down. Constant urn boiling water was brilliant as was the Constant ice making built into the freezer, big bonus. Comfy beds, lovely linen, well kept and the place had a very homily feel.

The superb Old Court Hotel ( same owner as the house) with its great restaurant only 2 minute walk away. We had 2 excellent meals there. • "The booking was a mess up from the offset."

As the owner asked us directly to change the dates. Which we understood and agreed however it took numerous calls and emails to try to resolve with Sykes - clearly not easy to do business with. Email said key collection 1600 - owners said 1700 No bread, no milk no small hamper unlike other booking sites we have used. Overall disappointing experience - the internet is supposed to make life easy however on this occasion it was far from straight forward.

An amazing house in a beautiful location. Plenty of things to do within walking distance and a short drive away. Just on the border of Wales means you get the best of two worlds with Wales and Forest of Dean on your door step. The beds were so comfy! Jacuzzi was lovely and clean - we didn’t try out the sauna. The perfect end to the day was walking to the pub next door for dinner and then returning to the log burner and getting snug on the sofa. Our dog loved lying if don’t of the log burner.

  • "Overall, a lovely house which provided me with a very nice 60th birthday holiday."

However, there are a few small negative points which I should like to make. 1. There were no dish washing liquids or tablets, or hand soap or toilet paper provided, despite my having paid over £1800 to rent the house for a week. We had to go out and buy these. Most holiday rental houses provide these items; if an owner does not wish to do so, one has to accept it, but it should at least be mentioned clearly in the property description. 2. It would be nice to have tea and coffee provided. 3. The top floor bedroom suite is constructed in an old attic. The consequence is that the ceiling is very low, and the bed is effectively a mattress placed on the floor (a proper bed simply wouldn't fit under the ceiling!). The cupboards are all very low, and one risks backache reaching into them. 4. The lighting in the dining room is so dim as to make the room almost unusable in the evening. It is the land of the 20 watt bulb! Despite these small moans, I must reiterate that this is a lovely house, with the facilities of the hotel conveniently available next door. The owner was welcoming and helpful. Overall 8/10.

The Old Farmhouse lived up to our expections and beyond. It was lovely relaxing in the hot tub at the end of a busy day spent on one of the lovely walks nearby. • "The house was more relaxed than the photos suggested."

It is clearly well used and was not so pristine that we couldn’t relax. The facilities were excellent although we were quite unable to find a welcome pack, visitors’ book or any material on the area’s charms. This absence of detail was important as we took a while to discover that the nearest convenience store was just up the road. There were no firelighters or matches although there was an abundance of beautifully chopped firewood. Although we didn’t see anyone the whole time we were there we knew we could call in on the friendly hotel staff if needed. The garden was excellent for the children and dog and there are a number of excellent walks nearby. There is also a great piano. The house is extremely well placed (immediately off the A40) and it is easy to move around the Wye Valley and on into Wales. Whitchurch itself is sundered by this ferocious road splitting it in two but if you cross the bridge there is a really friendly and beautiful pub with an excellent Indian restaurant and takeaway. We would also recommend the cafe at the top of Symonds Yat Rock, the cycling at PedalAway and Stuart of Wye Canoes, who really went out of his way to help us. All in all we had a lovely time and will return to the area soon. Thank you.

The electrics obviously need upgrading. The numbers were confusing. When I booked it said sleeps 16. After that it went down to 12 adults and 2 children which was of some concern. In the event it slept 16 adults comfortably. We would have appreciated basic consumables being provided to start the week. A CD player would have been welcome. Taken overall we were very satisfied. The beds were very comfortable and the bedrooms suited our needs perfectly. We love the wood burning stoves which were a boon as the weather was quite chilly. The main living area was comfortable but not too smart that we needed to worry too much about the kids and animal messing it up! The sitting room was lovely and we were all able to sit down to eat at the two large tables. The kitchen was super well equipped, perhaps the only extra thing which would have been useful was a pan scrubber! The location was good for us and we enjoyed the butterfly zoo and maze. We had a very acceptable lunch and one evening meal at the hotel next door. We have used Sykes cottages on many occasions and always find the description and star ratings to be accurate. The location was good although going out in the evening was a bit tricky cos of the lack of taxi service and the walking distance was 2 hours but could have just stayed in and would have had just a good night. Everything you could possibly want was catered for. The owners are lovely people and have gone to great lenghths to ensure that the accommodation was equipped for every need. The house itself is clean, modern, well laid out and in a quiet area. The beds are extremely comfortable and the bedrooms are a generous size. There are 2 lounges so you can read, listen to music or just talk in one whilst others can watch TV. The dining room is large and we'll laid out. The kitchen has a dual fuel cooker as well as a range cooker, a large American size fridge freezer, large Dishwasher washer, this was wonderful, no washing up to do. There is also boiling water on tap for tea and coffee. The three bathrooms are clean, large and modern, towels are provided. Outside there is a children's play area, my great-grandchildren children loved this area. There is also a sauna and a hot tub, wonderful after a long day out. The owners lit the hot tub daily so it was ready for us to use after dinner. I cannot speak too highly about this property other than to say it is the best place I have stayed in and would recommend it to anyone.

The hot tub was amazing and used every evening, the only downside was that it should be emptied each week when new tenants arrive. It was old water and we had to refill it ourselves, which wasn't a problem but would have preferred the owners to do so. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything that you need for cooking, we decided to have 'couples come dine with me' from the Monday to Thursday and it had everything that you needed so no complaints there! The owners have a lovely pub which is situated next door to the property we went for Sunday lunch and would highly recommend, as we stayed in the cottage we pre-booked and they gave us a whole room which was fab! We would re-book this holiday cottage for next year as we loved the location, there are many activities that the location offers and the River Wye is stunning but the price for next year has almost doubled which puts us off extremely. Which is a shame!
