  • "We only stayed for 2 nights and wish we could have stayed for longer."

Middle Gable is an absolutely stunning property! It's very well equipped, clean and comfortable. The location is perfect - a very quiet residential area about 2 minutes walk from the Motor Museum in the middle of Bourton-on-the-Water. The owner was very helpful. We'll hopefully stay here again, and can thoroughly recommend it as a self-catering holiday destination!

  • "Our stay at Middle Gable was wonderful, we were very impressed with the house which dates from 1650, and there was lots to do in the village and surrounding area."

We would love to come back.

  • "My family stayed at the cottage for the weekend and would happily return."

Bourton on the water is a lovely little village with nice cafes, shops and other amenities. The cottage itself is wonderfully situated in the centre of the village. On arrival, the keys are straightforward to collect and there is parking outside a garage. The cottage itself is spacious with lots of character and although we just stayed for a weekend would happily return for a longer stay. Despite it being very chilly outside and occasionally wet, the cottage is very warm and has plenty of space for kids to enjoy themselves. There are several walks to start from the cottage and driving to surrounding villages is simple. Very happy to have stayed there.

  • "Beautiful cottage with lots of character in an excellent location."

The village itself is also incredibly beautiful. Out host was easy to deal with and offered excellent communication.

  • "This is a beautiful old cottage packed full of period features and historic decor."

A real treat to experience. It boasts a massive four poster bed and the wood burning stove is a great feature too. The gardens are pretty and well kept and the neighbours friendly. The property is really well located very close to the high street and all the amenities and attractions.

Would go and stay there again.

Lots of character and beautiful shared garden with friendly neighbours.

  • "We loved it at Middle Gable!"

The location was fantastic, making the house a great base to explore the beautiful Bourton on the Water itself, but also elsewhere in the Cotswolds. The house worked perfectly for our group and had everything we needed, and we were constantly finding new charms throughout the house.

    EmmaJul 2020

  • "The house is lovely and is situated in one of the best locations within the village."

The neighbours and owner were both friendly and helpful. The four poster bed is huge and very comfortable. Ticks all the boxes and would love to come back to this lovely area again. Thank you

  • "Lovely old property - combo of townhouse and cottage, packed with original features."

Original floorboards in the bedrooms are lovely and more than a little uneven. Door heights are original as well, so watch your head if you're over 6ft like me. Huge and comfy four poster bed in the 1st floor master bedroom along with a large bathroom. Everything you'd need in the kitchen. A minute's stroll past a pub and an amazing bakery (highly recommended) and you're at Bourton's river and main drag. Ideal location in a lovely village and parking for 2-3 cards which is great as it's such a popular village that on-street parking is a struggle. The private shared garden in front of the property is lovely as well. Contact from Cate the owner was excellent and told us everything we needed to know to find the place, get the keys, get in, turn on the under floor heating and make ourselves at home. We had a lovely long weekend here. Five stars.

  • "Beautiful. Such a lovely stay."

We were very cosy with the fire and underfloor heating despite the storms and rain! Thank you

  • "Middle Gable is the perfect home in the perfect location in Bourton on the water, everything in the town within a short walking distance."

Bourton on the water itself is a great place as close to many other lovely villages in towns within the Cotswolds. We stayed here just as a couple but would also be perfect as a family, as its plenty big enough with large kitchen/ diner and living room space. Log burner is a very nice touch in the winter. The bathrooms were very clean, the bed was very comfortable. The host called before arriving with very clear arrival instructions on the location and how to get into the property, and gave a lot of information about the town and surrounding area. Highly recommend staying here, our only regret was that we only booked 2 nights.

  • "Middle Gable is a beautiful house and the location right in the middle of Bourton-On-The-Water is superb."

It is the most interesting old building which formed part of the old Manor House and dates back centuries. It was spotlessly clean and the beds were very comfortable. The directions from Cate got us there without issue and the parking for 3 cars was a great addition.

    JocelynDec 2019

  • "Fantastic place."

All that was advertised and more. The place was totally furnished with modern amenities, but keeping in the spirit. All was spotless and the atmosphere was wonderful. Brought us to the Cotswold of old. Hopefully we can come again.

  • "Exceptional character property, not cheap but worth every penny."

Perfectly located for shops, bars, restaurants and museums etc., The owner Cate has put a lot of time and effort in keeping the character of the house whilst we enjoyed some mod cons like a very well stocked modern kitchen.

    IngridOct 2019

  • "Middle Gable is a wonderfully appointed property whose location is excellent and within walking distance to all local amenities but yet is most private and quiet."

I would strongly recommend this property anyone wishing to explore the Cotswolds.

  • "If you like quaint and historical this home has it all."

Extremely clean, very peaceful and easy walk to centre of town (3 minute walk). Easy drives to other small towns. Walk out the gate and the beautiful Cotswold countryside is on your right and the town on your left. I can't say enough about this property. I will definitely stay here again.

  • "Very beautiful old house, said to have a history of 350 years, a beautiful large garden in front of the door, the location is also very good in the center of the town."

The neighbours next door are very warm and helped us carry luggage and pick up the keys, a very good stay and experience

  • "Enchanting to step back in time to this decorated and highly rare find."

Savoured the age of this place which has been so well kept. Very clean, adequate, and set in a fabulous garden environment in a charming Cotswold town.

  • "Beautiful village and home to stay in."

Staying at Middle Gable gives you the full experience of a small Cotswolds village. The location is perfect as everything is within a few minutes walk. The garden is beautiful and the neighbours, Ann and Steve, were so kind and helpful. The village people are so friendly and welcoming. We did suggest to the owners to provide a steamer as an iron was not available due to previous incidences at the home.

  • "If you are searching for a true Cotswolds weekend get away experience, this is your place."

Quite and beautiful surroundings and the cottage is in great shape for its age. Very reasonably priced! If my wife and I ever find ourselves going back to that area, we would definitely stay here if it not otherwise booked.

We had just the most fantastic time. The cottage was great and is full of character. Cate was excellent. You have high expectations when you book a place for the peak period and ours were exceeded. We have already recommended Middle Gable to our friends and hope to return some day. Thanks for a great stay.

  • "Was very impressed with quality of cottage, furnishings, and amenities."

Cate did a very nice job putting everything together. Wonderful location, both in terms of the village, and in terms of other sights in the Cotswolds. Was excellent value for money. After arrival, owner called me to check up and make sure everything was good. This was much appreciated and shows the attention to detail that made this such a nice stay.

  • "The place was great."

Ideal location to High Street. Loved the downstairs heated floor. Cate & Chris were great - they were quick to respond to any inquiry. The view from the living room and main bedroom was marvellous. The place was a perfect base for touring the Cotswolds and the countryside was beautiful. It was great coming back each evening after a busy day of sightseeing. Stay there once and you will want to go back...

  • "Excellent week-long visit with 8 month old baby."

Lovely property, which is very attractive and well equipped. The owners are very well organised and attentive (without being overbearing) and kindly went out of their way to bring over a high chair for our use. Village enjoys plenty of amenities for a very young family - lots to do within metres of the door, making for very easy & enjoyable trips between nap times!

  • "This was a fantastic cottage, homely comfortable and full of character, in a superb location just a few moments stroll from the high street with its many shops and tea rooms."

Even though it was so close to the high street it was so quiet and peaceful with a beautiful garden to relax in. Anne the lady who lived nearby was a great help with her recommendations of local restaurants. Would recommend this to friends and would love to go back.

  • "This cottage has the perfect location to explore the Cotswolds."

We took several day trips, even Port Isaac was within reach. Everything was clean and comfortable and the neighbours are very helpful in recommending restaurants etc. Make sure you take a walk to the Slaughters, it can be easily done in 2 hours.

  • "Bourton is a lovely place to stay, despite it being crowded during the day it felt very relaxed almost like going back to another era, when the pace of life was much slower."

I would recommend it to anyone and Middle Gable is the ideal place to stay, just a few hundred metres from the main high street, it oozes charm and personality. This was our first visit to the Costwolds and hopefully not our last as there was so much to do and see, a week was nowhere long enough to do it justice. In summary, would I go back to Bourton and would I stay at Middle Gable the answer is a massive 'YES' to both.

    Jul 2011

  • "We like to stay in older, individual properties and the Middle Gable built around 1650 was perfect."

It is appropriately furnished and has good kitchen and bathroom facilities. It is in the centre of Bourton-on-the-Water so the car could stay in the garage whilst we walked around the area and sampled local places to eat.

About the location

BOURTON-ON-THE-WATER

Stow-on-the-Wold 4 miles; Moreton-in-Marsh 8 miles; Chipping Norton 13 miles; Cheltenham 15.5 miles.

Located in the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the historic village of Bourton-on-the-Water dates back to Neolithic times with over 100 buildings being Grade II listed or higher. The picturesque high street nestles alongside the River Windrush over which several low stone bridges span, which is why Bourton-on-the-Water is known as the Venice in the Cotswolds. Tradition states that an annual football match is played in the summer, in the River Windrush with the banks lined with spectators, with the aim to score as many goals as possible and get as wet as possible! The village has an eclectic range of visitor attractions, including The Model Village, Cotswold Motor Museum, Birdland Park and Gardens as well as a Dragonfly Maze, monthly farmers’ market as well as many tea rooms, an artisan bakery, antiques and craft markets, traditional sweet shop, cycle hire and its very own perfumery. Nearby, Stow-on-the-Wold, originally an Iron Age Fort, epitomises traditional England. This ancient market town has played host to many fairs since the 12th century and today holds a biannual Gypsy Horse Fair, craft fairs and monthly farmers' market. The vast market square boasts an ancient cross at one end and the village stocks at the other, surrounded by an elegant array of Cotswold stone townhouses, antiques shops, tea rooms, traditional pubs, award-winning restaurants and its very own cricket museum. Also take a visit to the medieval town of Burford for a great day out where you can enjoy a trip to the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens. The Saxon market town of Moreton-in-Marsh and the quintessential English village of Broadway are both within easy reach and make a great day out. The spa town of Cheltenham is, architecturally, the most complete Regency town in England with an incredible range of shops, cinemas, theatres, restaurants and pubs, it is famous for its horse racing festival in March, culminating in the Gold Cup steeplechase. Oxford, the oldest university city in England and sometimes called The City of Dreaming Spires has an abundance of prestigious attractions, including the 38 colleges of the university (half of which date back before 1600), the oldest university teaching room, the Bodleian Library, Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums, and Botanic Gardens. Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Worcester and the waterfront city of Gloucester are also all within easy reach.
